FOR GIVING

The UCLA ED&IS Scholarship Campaign

The UCLA School of Education and Information Studies

Scholarship giving for Education and Information Studies students is one of the most meaningful ways to give at UCLA. Gifts toward scholarship support are messages of hope for the future, especially for those who have chosen to pursue meaningful careers in the education and information sectors.

Our world started off this first decade of UCLA’s Second Century with an unimaginable pandemic and so many lives lost. Our hope is to rise up from this historic challenge, to become a community of inspiration by creating a Decade for Giving. In that spirit of hope, resilience, and gratitude, we are launching The UCLA Ed&IS Scholarship Campaign. Thank you to all who have and who will create these all-important scholarships for UCLA’s Education and Information Studies students.

TINA CHRISTIE

UCLA Wasserman Dean of Education and Information Studies

A DECADE

I am truly inspired and motivated to live up to the expectations that follow with receiving this scholarship. I have become an individual who encompasses the founding principles of UCLA of integrity, excellence, accountability, respect, and service.

A Tradition of Generous Giving

Our alumni and friends have created an inspirational tradition of giving to our School during UCLA’s First Century. UCLA Ed&IS is honored to have more than 56 Named Endowed Scholarships and 16 Named Annual Scholarships. Private philanthropy is essential to UCLA’s mission of education, research, and service. And for many of our generous donors, UCLA—the nation’s #1 public university—is the change agent that enables their philanthropy to make a difference for the public good.

The UCLA Ed&IS Scholarship Campaign is a wonderful opportunity for you—our alumni and friends—to join together in making a difference for our students who are pursuing their future careers as educators, education researchers, community leaders, librarians, archivists, and information professionals.

Receiving a scholarship award has given me the faith that ... I am a valuable addition to the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies community, which... has imbued my mind with the strength and persistence to overcome.

Creating Opportunities for the Next Generation of Education and Information Professionals

The need for scholarships has never been greater as our school and programs evolve. Enrollment continues to grow; we launched our new undergraduate major in Education and Social Transformation; we are expanding our programs in Archival Studies and Special Collections; and we bring focus to our programs aimed at increasing educational equity.

Your support will give students the opportunity to earn a UCLA degree regardless of financial circumstances. Equitable access to education and information is one of the most critical issues of this era and UCLA is at the very forefront of shaping the future of these fields.

UCLA Ed&IS is dedicated to giving these promising scholars access to a UCLA educational experience that will transform their lives—and they in turn will transform our communities for the better. Supporting this mission through scholarship support guarantees this commitment into the future.

Many of our students today are the beneficiaries of those who have been so generous in the past. Our goal over the coming decade is to double the number of scholarships awarded each year to Education and Information Studies students.

The UCLA Ed&IS Scholarship Campaign will directly affect the lives of our students now and in the future, leaving a legacy of support of which we can all be proud.

We invite you to be a part of this UCLA Ed&IS tradition of giving back to the next generation—by making a gift to The UCLA Ed&IS Scholarship Campaign.

Impact and Inspire

So many of our UCLA Ed&IS students are in great need of financial support. A majority of our students have chosen future careers as teachers, researchers, librarians and information professionals—where often their salaries will be low but their impact will be immeasurable.

Here are some current areas of scholarship need:

Undergraduate Education Scholarships Effecting Positive Change in Education

In Fall 2021, UCLA Ed&IS returned to its roots by launching a new Bachelor’s degree in Education and Social Transformation. This new UCLA major lights the way toward a broader understanding of the study of education and recognizes our nation’s schools as the engine of equity and economic opportunity, especially for our most underserved and marginalized communities.

These are our first undergraduate students since 1964. It is exciting to have these students bring new energy to the School along with a commitment to challenging traditional thinking in education.

Undergraduate scholarships are crucial to keeping Ed&IS accessible and affordable for the broadest spectrum of the brightest students. Scholarships also free up recipients to concentrate on coursework, research, or internships and graduate on time with less debt.

I believe that education is the biggest treasure in life. With this fellowship, I not only have the ability to continue my studies, but also work toward becoming a teacher and motivating my future students toward their own academic success.

Scholarships Aimed at Recruiting and Retaining Black, Latinx, Asian or Pacific Islander and Indigenous Students

Increasing our School’s Diversity

Diversity in our community is critical for fulfilling our equity mission and enriching our community’s diverse educational and work experiences.

Our libraries and schools are in great need of professionals who represent the communities they serve. One of the School’s highest priorities in the coming years will be to recruit the best and brightest Black, Latinx, Asian or Pacific Islander, and Indigenous students for our undergraduate and graduate programs.

In alignment with the School’s commitment to advancing access and building a student body diverse in background and perspective, Ed&IS seeks an influx of scholarships for Black, Latinx, Asian or Pacific Islander, and Indigenous students.

Graduate Student Scholarships

Expanding the Boundaries of our Research

Increasing our capacity to offer substantial graduate scholarships will enable us to recruit the most promising graduate students. Ed&IS often cannot match the financial packages provided by some universities without the help of generous scholarship support.

Graduate scholarships are essential for graduate students’ careers and empower them to do their most innovative work alongside our expert faculty. For our graduate students in both Information Studies and Education, we are enhancing and expanding our research work and our programs to reflect the growing need for educators and information specialists in our global community.

My studies at UCLA are providing me with an education and experiences that I know will guide me in my future career. Receiving this fellowship is an honor and has given me the confidence that my efforts and interests are of value.

Scholarships for Students Pursuing Professional Degrees Preparing Social Justice Teachers, Librarians and Leaders

UCLA Ed&IS aims to contribute to the creation of a more just, equitable, and humane society through enlightened and socially conscious professional degree programs. These are informed by an ethic of social justice, where teaching and leadership development are analyzed through the lens of equity, access, diversity and human dignity. The Masters in Library and Information Science, Educational Leadership Program, and Student Affairs and Transformative Coaching and Leadership programs prepare our students to be exceptional educators and leaders in urban settings.

UCLA Community School Student Scholarships Supporting Our Young People at UCLA’s K-12 Partner Schools

The UCLA School of Education and Information Studies invites you to join us in supporting the college access and success of the youngest members of our Bruin community: the high school seniors and recent graduates from our K-12 partner schools: UCLA Community School and Mann UCLA Community School.

Too many of our Community School students work hard to be admitted to universities and colleges and then end up being financially challenged to attend. UCLA Community School Scholarships will provide college scholarships for high school seniors at Mann UCLA Community School in South Los Angeles and UCLA Community School in Pico-Union to attend a two or four-year college.

You have not only impacted me and my ability to believe in myself as I continue this challenging but meaningful journey as the first in my family to attend graduate school, but you have done so much more. You’ve provided hope.

1. Establish a NAMED Annual Scholarship—for a gift or pledge of $10,000 or more, a named scholarship will be awarded each year until the gift is fully expended.

2. Establish a NAMED Endowed Scholarship—a gift or pledge of $100,000 or more, will establish your named endowed scholarship fund.
