WHAT REALLY MATTERS
Summer Quarter represents both an end to a seasonal cycle and an opportunity to engage in new activities as we enter the fall. At UCLA Extension we do not wind down or close during summer; rather, we seize the opportunity to focus on new initiatives and take advantage of the warm summer sun and extended periods of daylight.
Like our team, I invite you to seize the opportunity this summer to rise up for others and yourself by continuing your educational journey.
As we navigate the possibilities of the changing reality of work and life, we have been focused on taking the best of what we learned during the pandemic into the future. Many classes and events have returned to in-person, but we have also continued to grow our online and hybrid course options to provide maximum flexibility for our learners. We have and will continue to spend more time creating opportunities for meaningful in-person engagement built around networking, events, and activities. We believe in the power of connection and understand the role that UCLA Extension must serve to connect resources and people in a city as vast and expansive as Los Angeles.
What really matters is YOU.
Providing our students with the best possible education, to help them achieve their professional and personal goals, is the purpose of our work. For our team, it feels rewarding to work in a profession knowing that we make a difference in our students’ lives. And the best part is that we know you will go on to make a difference here locally and around the world.
We are here to support you and cheer you on as you take the next step in your career. We are here to ensure that the world no longer needs to wait for people like you—you’ve arrived. We are here to help make your dreams and goals a reality.
Welcome to Summer Quarter!
Best Wishes,
Eric A. Bullard, PhD Dean, Continuing Education and UCLA Extension

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
Building Equity for All
At UCLA Extension, one of our key strategic priorities is to provide access, equity, and inclusion in all of our offerings. Our academic programs empower people to build better futures for themselves and their communities. This is a mission we do not take lightly, knowing that the impact will positively transform the demographic makeup of the fields and industries in which our students work.
For this reason, we established the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee, a body that consists of representatives from UCLA Extension students, instructors, and staff. The committee’s charge is to foster and guide the development of a more inclusive and equity-based culture at UCLA Extension that continues to support and strengthen diverse backgrounds, identities, and points of view.

Vicci Sperry Reception & Celebration
Friday, March 3, 2023
UCLA Extension Gayley Center
Vicci Sperry (1900–1995) was born in New York City and began her career as an avant-garde abstract expressionist artist in Chicago in the 1930s.
After studying with Hans Hofmann, she became one of, if not the only student he entrusted to critique his work. She was deeply involved in the Greenwich Village ferment of the forties and fifties as a close associate of such noted artists as Franz Kline, Willem De Kooning, Jackson Pollack, and many others.
Over the decades, she has exhibited in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and numerous other cities in the United States.
UCLA Extension is delighted to honor the life’s work of one of America’s great artists and remains dedicated to promoting and advancing creativity and ingenuity in all that we do.
“Nature does not hold back. With sublime opulence, she gives us blue skies, azure waters, brilliantly colored flowers, birds, and other creations, with infinite variations.”
—Vicci Sperry

Horticulture Certificate
“I’ve been a gardener for over 15 years in California and have worked with the best in the industry. My tight schedule prevented me from formalizing my education. The horticulture certificate’s remote format turned my commuting hours into learning hours.
The program taught me how to thoroughly investigate plants and gardening methods before applying them in the garden. I also really appreciated the guided path in each course, which helped me learn more than I expected.”

UCLA Extension On the Road
March 13–17, 2023
Bangkok, Thailand
This spring, we participated in the 2023 Asia-Pacific Association for International Education Conference (APAIE) in Bangkok, Thailand. Dean Eric Bullard, Assistant Dean Susie Morris, and Emily Kirsch, Director of International Relations and Partnerships, attended.
During the conference, we met with over 75 current and existing partners to develop pathways into UCLA Extension Certificate, Study Abroad, and Online programs. As a result, over 20 new Letters of Agreement (LOAs) are in progress. The UCLA Extension team was also invited to attend the Thai-U.S. University Partnership Reception at the U.S. ambassador’s residence, furthering our diplomatic and cultural ties with Thai partners.
Prior to the conference, we met with potential partner universities in Thailand, including Thammasat University, where Assistant Dean Morris used to teach and where she was able to reconnect with old colleagues and friends. The team also had the opportunity to meet with current agency partners, including participating in the AAE student fair in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and the Oh! Study student fair in three cities in Taiwan, and held meetings with new and existing agency partners in South Korea and Japan. All events were successful in building stronger relationships and generating new prospective student leads.

Certificate at a Glance
College Counseling Certificate
Each quarter, we offer a glimpse into one of our popular certificate programs.
This summer, we focus on the College Counseling Certificate.
Do you want a career with a greater purpose? UCLA Extension’s College Counseling Certificate prepares college and career counselors for high school students, as well as career changers to make an impact in the lives of teenagers.
Taught by academic and educational counselors, the College Counseling Certificate offers practical and comprehensive training for guiding high school
students through the college admission process. The curriculum covers topics such as the overview of the college admission, financial aid fundamentals, career assessment, counseling students with learning disabilities, and advising community college students for transfer.
The program is fully online and you can complete it at your own pace from wherever you are in the world. You will benefit from networking opportunities with your instructors and classroom peers, many of whom work in the field.
This program is perfect for…
• Secondary school counselors, teachers, career counselors, and admissions personnel interested in developing their professional competencies.
• Career changers who are interested in becoming a college counselor.
• College admissions professionals interested in establishing an independent educational consulting practice.
• Individuals working in an educational nonprofit or community-based organization, guiding underresourced students to college.
“The curriculum of the certificate program took me by the hand and allowed me to explore in depth each of the concepts. The Financial Aid class gave me the skills and concepts to feel confident helping people explore colleges with a financial fit in mind. The practicum experience made me feel empowered and allowed me to pull all the resources and skills I learned through the required courses.”
Debbie Keown, College Counseling Certificate graduate
