Spring is the time of plans and projects.”
— Leo Tolstoy

THE WORLD IS WAITING

Spring is often described as a time for new beginnings, growth, change, and hope. In higher education, spring also signifies metamorphosis and transition, taking theory learned and applying that knowledge in real-world and practical ways.

In a few short months, UCLA Extension students will become graduates— joining the ranks of Bruin alumni spread throughout the world. Though their current time with us has come to an end, it is only the beginning of a new journey and the beginning of the pursuit of lifelong learning. As counselors, teachers, accountants, data scientists, and music producers, they will each touch the world in their own way. We can’t wait to see how their education and experiences impact their professions.

In the last several months, as travel has become easier and events more commonplace, I have had the honor of meeting many of our alumni and former students. I have enjoyed hearing their success stories, driving home the impact of UCLA Extension. Though we may have some credit in helping them succeed, the truth is that our alumni are the type of people who do great things. True Bruins in every way!

So, as you register for classes, whether it be your first, your last, or your only quarter with us, we are cheering you on, waiting to see what you will become. We already know how much of an impact you can make. You will do great things.

The world is waiting for people like YOU. The world is waiting for UCLA Extension alumni.

Best Wishes,

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Building Equity for All

At UCLA Extension, one of our key strategic priorities is to provide access, equity, and inclusion in all of our offerings. Our academic programs empower people to build better futures for themselves and their communities. This is a mission we do not take lightly, knowing that the impact will positively transform the demographic makeup of the fields and industries in which our students work.

For this reason, we established the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee, a body that consists of representatives from UCLA Extension students, instructors, and staff. The committee’s charge is to foster and guide the development of a more inclusive and equity-based culture at UCLA Extension that continues to support and strengthen diverse backgrounds, identities, and points of view.

Career Spotlight

What does a Human Resources Manager do?

The Human Resource Manager will lead and direct the routine functions of the Human Resources (HR) department including hiring and interviewing staff; administering pay, benefits, and leave; and enforcing company policies and practices.

A successful HR Manager should possess these top essential skills:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflictresolution skills

• Organizational and time-management skills

• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality

• Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations

• Analytical thinking, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills

• Leadership skills

Where does a Human Resources Manager work?

Human Resource Managers can hold permanent inhouse positions with businesses of all sizes and are employed in nearly every industry. Depending on the size of the company, some travel may also be required to visit other branch offices, attend professional meetings, or to recruit new employees.

According to bls.gov, the median pay for human resources managers is $126,230/year.

Instructor Spotlight

Kathy Gilroy, MA

Human Resources Manager, Safety Insurance

“I’ve worked in most of the aspects of HR in a variety of places and I’ve developed a point of view: The only HR policies and programs that qualify as ‘best practices’ are the ones that work where you are.

In my class discussions you’re likely to hear about highly publicized HR practices that are very effective in some organizations and others that, despite their good press, fall flat. That’s often because those practices don’t support the organization’s mission and/or culture. HR life in the real organizational world sometimes doesn’t look very much like HR as its described in the business press.”

38th Annual Tax Controversy Conference

Thursday, October 27, 2022

The Beverly Hills Hotel

For the last thirty-eight years, the UCLA Extension Annual Tax Controversy Institute Conference has been one of the premier tax controversy programs in the United States, bringing together tax professionals and government officials to share their expertise and learn from each other in a collegial setting.

Join program staff from our Business, Management, and Legal Programs Department and conference co-chairs, Steven Toscher, Esq. and Sandra R. Brown, Esq. of Hochman Salkin Toscher Perez, P.C., to experience an informative and provocative one-day event. We were thrilled to have Charles P. Rettig, 49th Commissioner of the IRS, as our keynote speaker. Commissioner Rettig recently ended his term but made a tremendous impact over the nation’s tax system.

This year’s conference continues the tradition of providing high-quality practical presentations by distinguished government and private practitioners from throughout the United States. Look forward to enjoying an open discussion with panelists and the audience about current tax controversy trends and sometimes sensitive practice issues.

The conference is held at the prestigious Beverly Hills Hotel, and includes continental breakfast, the Annual Bruce I. Hochman Award Luncheon, and evening reception. Network with your fellow tax industry colleagues, and learn what the future of tax controversy holds.

Hear from past participants on what they think of our conference:

“This is the best educational experience for tax controversy lawyers anywhere.”

“ This is my favorite tax conference. I so look forward to it every year. How nice to be back to an in-person event. I’m a retired IRS Appeals employee who enjoys keeping her hand in the game.”

“ This is one of the most productive and informative events of the year. Yet, it has a casual, friendly feeling— like chatting with friends, instead of just being lectured at/or to. Thank you. Well done—again.”

For more information or to get updates about the 2023 Conference visit uclaextension.edu/taxcon.
