Other qualifications: see online Prospectus entry. Studying History at UCL gives you opportunities to explore the subject which are probably unrivalled anywhere else in the UK or Europe. This degree focuses on the ancient history of the Near East, Egypt and the Mediterranean world from the third millennium BC to late antiquity. The programme comprises compulsory elements (courses or written work) plus optional courses in all years. Students must take at least one course in an ancient language to prepare them for working with documents; this is taught from scratch. We encourage all students to take advantage of the breadth of provision in Medieval, Early Modern and Modern, as well as Ancient History; optional courses may be taken from another discipline. Teaching is delivered via lectures and seminars, and one-to-one tutorials provide personal feedback on essays.

This three-year specialist degree enables you to study the history, culture and language of ancient Egypt in the wider framework of the history of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern world from the early third millennium to the end of the first millennium BC. Years one and two comprise both core and optional courses. In year three you will undertake a final-year dissertation. All students learn the Egyptian language and hieroglyphic script, and the history of the peoples living on the banks of the Nile, the Euphrates and the Tigris, as well as their neighbours in Nubia, Anatolia and Iran. Optional courses in years two and three can focus on languages (Ancient Hebrew, Akkadian, Sumerian and Hittite are taught at UCL and elsewhere within the University of London), ancient history and/or archaeology.
