Founded in 1826, UCL was built to open up-higher education in England to those who had been excluded from it, and to change the way we create and share knowledge.

This spirit of openness still thrives today. Each year, UCL welcomes students and staff from across the world and now boasts a community made up of 50% international students and 34% international staff.

India has long formed an integral part of this global community. Today there are nearly 1,000 Indian students studying at UCL, as well as many collaborations, across all disciplines, between UCL and partners in India.

It’s thanks to this diverse community that UCL consistently contributes to some of the world’s most pioneering research; tackles some of the world’s most pressing challenges, and regularly places among the world’s top-ranked universities.

To support and promote partnership activity, UCL has a South Asia network, a Centre for the Study of South Asia and the Indian Ocean World and a dedicated Global Strategic Academic Advisor (India), who plays a strategic role as a catalyst for UCL’s engagement in the country.

The current GSAA is Professor (Dr) Monica Lakhanpaul, expert in Integrated Community Child Health. Consistently ranked within the top ten of the QS World University Rankings, UCL is a truly world-leading university, and in areas from health to engineering, the university’s collaborations with India are helping to speed up the process of discovery.

UCL and India: A historic relationship

UCL has a rich history of collaboration with India, one that stretches back as far as the 1800s.

Indian languages were taught at UCL from a very early stage in its history. Dadabhai Naoroji – popularly known as the ‘Grand Old Man of India’ – was a lecturer of Gujarati at UCL between 1856-65. He was the first Indian UK Member of Parliament, elected to London’s Finsbury seat in 1892.

Sir William Ramsay, UCL Professor of Inorganic Chemistry between 1887-1913, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904. In 1900, he visited India on a trip sponsored by Jamsetji Tata to consult on the formation of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. Ramsay conducted extensive research and the resulting report was instrumental to the choice of location for the IISc.

His co-worker, Professor Morris William Travers FRS, and then Sir Alfred Gibbs Bourne, both UCL alumni, went on to become the institute’s first and second directors.

Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose earned a BSc from UCL in 1883, contributing significantly to his pioneering research in radio waves and plant physiology. He established the Bose Institute in Kolkata, one of India’s oldest public research institutes.

Augustus De Morgan was born in Madurai, India. At just 22, he became UCL’s first Professor of Mathematics, shortly after the university’s formation. Today, the headquarters of the London Mathematical Society is called De Morgan House and the student society of UCL’s Mathematics Department is called the Augustus De Morgan Society.

Professor Otto Koenigsberger, UCL’s first Professor of Planning, was Director for the Indian Ministry of Housing from 1948-1951 in the Nehru Government.

He was instrumental in designing settlements for refugees displaced by partition and migrating from Pakistan. He also designed the town plan for Bhubaneswar in Odisha and - with the vision of J.R.D. Tata - Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.

UCL counts a number of notable Indian figures among its alumni, including the acclaimed Bengali poet and musician Rabindranath Tagore, who studied law at UCL in 1880. Romesh Chunder Dutt was another UCL student and later lecturer of Indian History who completed a seminal piece of work on economic nationalism. He also translated the Ramayana and Mahabharata. He served as President of the Indian National Congress in 1899.

Baroness Shreela Flather studied Law at UCL in 1955 and was elevated to the peerage as Baroness Flather, of Windsor and Maidenhead in the Royal County of Berkshire, in June 1990. This made her the first Asian woman to receive this honour in Britain.

S. R. Ranganathan, considered the father of library science, documentation and information science in India, came to UCL in 1925. It was here that he found inspiration for some of his notable contributions to the field, including the first major faceted classification system, the colon classification, which is still widely used in libraries today.

UCL is a multidisciplinary university that consistently excels in research: it was rated second in the UK for research power in the latest Research Excellence Framework and it has accumulated no fewer than 32 Nobel Prize winners since the first prize was awarded in 1901.

At UCL, we believe that bringing together diverse perspectives, through combining different disciplines and experiences, accelerates the process of discovery.

Our staff collaborate with peers and partners across the world – including in India, where UCL has many collaborations stretching across all disciplines. These collaborations are partnerships of equivalence, with a focus on two-way learning. Our joint seed funding programmes with academic partners including IIT Delhi, AIIMS and IISc have supported more than 50 projects to date.

Health and medicine

Dr Wolfgang Stöhr (MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL) has collaborated with Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research as part of a global study showing many newborns are dying because the antibiotics used to treat sepsis are losing their effectiveness.

Professor Usha Menon (MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL) worked with the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) in the Government of India, to develop a ‘Clinical Trials Toolkit for India’. It provides practical advice on navigating the many regulations that govern clinical research and the design and conduct of clinical trials.

Dr Maria Secrier (Biosciences) used UCL-IISc Strategic Partner Funds to improve the modelling of cancer cells through investigating cancer cell plasticity.

Dr Sara Hillman (EGA Institute for Women’s Health) has worked with the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) to reduce the burden of low birth weights related to high altitude.

During the pandemic, Indian multinational SecureMeters downloaded and obtained regulatory approval for the Ventura-CPAP breathing aid design created by UCL engineers and clinicians including Professor Becky Shipley (Institute of Healthcare Engineering), helping to save thousands of lives locally.

Science

Professor Serge Guillas (Statistical Science) is working with the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru to use big data to try and predict tsunami movements and protect Indian coastal towns.

Dr Debarshi Das (Physics & Astronomy) has been working with the Bose Institute, Kolkata on an experiment that could test the quantum nature of large masses for the first time.

Professor Giovanna Tinetti (Physics & Astronomy) has been collaborating with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru, looking for exoplanets.

Dr Mojtaba Abdi-Jalebi (Institute for Materials Discovery) used UCL-IIT Delhi Strategic Partner Funds to develop a new, economically viable process for decarbonising industry.

Professor Jonathan Holmes (Geography) and IIT Delhi colleagues used joint seed funding to design, build and install devices to collect rainfall across the Indo-Gangetic Plain, to better understand the Indian summer monsoon and how climate change may impact its behaviour in future.

Arts and social sciences

Professor Christopher Pinney (Anthropology) was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 by the then President of India under the category of Literature and Education. His research has ranged over the cosmology of

industrialism and modernity, colonialism and photography, popular Indian visual culture, Indian studio photography, and the more general field of visual anthropology.

In Gujarat, Professor Liz Rideal (Slade School of Fine Art) created an image bank of women wearing saris in different contexts, exploring the insights this offered into gender and independence.

Tackling the Grand Challenges

The UCL Grand Challenges is a groundbreaking grassroots initiative to stimulate and support cross-disciplinary research to the most urgent problems facing humanity, such as climate change, inequality, and mental health. Since 2008, the programme has supported a number of

collaborations with partners in India, to develop responses to issues as diverse as the exploitation of migrant workers, ending child homelessness, tackling health stigma, and using architecture to create healthier communities.

Designed to develop holistic solutions to complex problems, the UCL Grand Challenges seeks to spark new collaborations and build new partnerships, and enable researchers to connect with industry and policymakers.

Tell us more about your background and connections to India

I was born in rural Uganda to parents from Gujarat, India. We moved to the UK as refugees when I was 12. I studied medicine in Aberdeen, developing a strong interest in therapeutics. Despite living abroad for all my life, I maintain close ties to India, supporting the Indian cricket team, visiting family annually, and building professional connections with institutions like AIIMS.

How did you become interested in haematology?

As a junior doctor, I was drawn to haematology after a pivotal experience with a patient. I took a blood sample, brought it to the lab, and with the consultant’s help, examined the blood film, made the diagnosis, and returned to the ward to start treatment—all within a few hours. The ready accessibility to blood made diagnosis and the study of the disease process for haematological conditions easier and this solidified my passion for haematology.

Professor Amit Nathwani (UCL Cancer Institute) founded biotechnology company Spur Therapeutics to develop groundbreaking gene therapy treatments for a wide range of inherited diseases, vastly improving patients’ quality of life.

We spoke to Amit about his journey so far…

Tell us about your journey into gene therapy

During my PhD, I was studying the regulation of tissue factor (TF), a key initiator of blood coagulation. To investigate how TF is regulated, we electroporated human umbilical endothelial cells with foreign DNA containing TF regulatory elements upstream of a bacterial reporter gene to measure expression. Successfully introducing functional DNA into cells made me think about applying this approach to correct monogenic disorders, which could potentially be curative.

Having grown up in East Africa, I witnessed the devastating impact of infectious diseases and the life-saving power of vaccines. This inspired me to explore therapies that offer a ‘one-and-done’ treatment option for a range of medical conditions, which could be transformative for patients globally.

Can you tell us more about your work with gene therapy for haemophilia?

Initially, I focused on developing gene therapy for thalassaemia and sickle cell disease, as these conditions were poorly served. However, my original strategy did

not work. This led me back to my roots in haemostasis, and I changed my focus to gene therapy for haemophilia.

Haemophilia B is rare, affecting around 1 in 30,000–50,000 males, while Haemophilia

A is more common, affecting 1 in 10,000. Sixty years ago, there were no effective treatments for haemophilia; patients either died young or were hospitalised for long periods due to painful joint bleeds. I believed gene therapy could be transformative, as even achieving 5% of normal clotting factor levels could make a significant difference. Today, some patients treated with gene therapy can play sports, like football, without needing to take an injection beforehand, demonstrating the real-world impact of these advancements.

What support did you get at UCL to develop your research into a spinout?

We developed three programmes that we licensed to a spin out company called Freeline Therapeutics (now Spur Therapeutics). We worked with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the USA on haemophilia B and next moved on to haemophilia A and developed an approach that was licensed by BioMarin Pharmaceuticals Inc, with UCL playing an important role through UCL Business (UCL’s commercialisation company) and UCL Translational Research Office. Roctavian (valoctocogene roxaparvovec) became the first ever gene therapy for adults with severe haemophilia A to be approved by the United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA), following a similar approval in 2022 by the European Commission. It means adults with the disease can now access a one-off treatment, doing away with the regular

injections previously needed to manage the disorder. When I joined UCL it was slowly but surely becoming a powerhouse in gene therapy. It has been a lovely place to work, with some phenomenal colleagues to collaborate and socialise with.

What does the future hold for your work?

We are now working to bring gene therapy to Uganda and India, where the majority of haemophilia patients live with little to no access to factor replacement therapy, let alone gene therapy. Delivering gene therapy through a not-for-profit initiative in developing countries would be a transformative achievement. It’s a significant challenge, but we hope to make it a reality one day.

What advice would you give to young scientists hoping to follow in your footsteps?

My advice is to keep striving to do better. If you get the chance to pursue your goals, ideas, and dreams, take it. Never stop dreaming, because it’s through daring to dream that breakthroughs like new drugs are made.

One drug we’re taking into the clinic for cancer is something I’m particularly proud of—it has a built-in ‘off’ switch. The data is promising, and we hope to treat the first patient with these self-regulating drugs next year. We’re excited about the possibilities ahead.

Tell us more about what you are studying at UCL.

I’m currently studying for a PhD in Bio-Integrated Design at UCL. My focus is on sustainable construction materials that merge architecture with biochemical engineering. During my time here, I’ve been working on a living-biomaterial that could revolutionise how we think about building sustainably, using processes like photosynthesis to create eco-friendly materials.

What led you to apply for this course?

I’ve always been passionate about sustainable construction, but I wanted to explore it in a more scientific and interdisciplinary way. While running my own architecture practice in Assam, I realised there were limited opportunities to push the boundaries of what was possible, and this is when I started looking for a course that could merge architecture with

biochemical engineering. I found the Bio-Integrated Design MSc at UCL, which offered exactly the combination I was looking for – something I struggled to see anywhere else in the world.

What are some of your favourite things about living in London and life at UCL?

Living in London has been an incredible experience. It’s such a vibrant and diverse city, and being at UCL places you right in the heart of it. The student community and my supervisors at UCL are very supportive, and I’ve had the chance to meet people from all over the world. UCL has a fantastic research environment, and I love the freedom it gives me to propose and test radical ideas.

How do you find the work/life balance at UCL?

UCL has been transformative for me, both personally and professionally. The workload

has been intense, but the sense of support you get has made it manageable. It’s been the best five years of my life so far. One of the most unique things about UCL is its bottom-up research approach - you’re encouraged to create something first and then think about its applications, which has led me to explore uses for my living-biomaterial ranging from construction bricks to space infrastructure.

You mentioned the discovery of this living-biomaterial, can you tell us a bit more about it?

Of course, during the COVID-19 pandemic when stricter lab rules were in place, and I started conducting unconventional experiments. That’s when I came upon a new method of growing photosynthetic cells in solid state that later developed into this living-biomaterial - not so much an invention, but more of a discovery of a novel process. This material is an excellent insulator, is incredibly lightweight,

and has potential applications not only in traditional construction but also in cars and possibly in extreme environments like space. The material harnesses photosynthesis with living cells that remain dormant, making it self-sustaining and eco-friendly.

What stage is your research at the moment?

Right now, the living-biomaterial is at Technology Readiness Level 5, which is based on NASA’s nine-point scale. We aim to reach Level 6 by 2025, at which point we’ll begin testing it in construction materials, like walls. The ultimate goal is to reach Level 9, which would mean full-scale industry application. We have set up a new company called Tattva, which will play a key role in bringing this material to the market. We’ve already established partnerships in the UK, including setting up a pilot production plant in Devon, which is very exciting.

You’ve also received recognition for your work. Can you tell us about some of the awards you’ve won?

Yes, two years into my studies, I received the BPS Irène Manton Prize at the 69th annual conference of the British Phycological Society for my research on this livingbiomaterial. Following that, I received a PhD Scholarship from EPSRC to continue the research and I was accepted into Cohort V at Conception X, one of the UK’s leading deep-tech venture programmes for PhD students. Conception X helped me explore how to transform my technology into a viable product, identify potential customers, and gain valuable insights from industry experts.

What are your plans for when you finish your PhD?

Once I complete my PhD, I’d like to focus on bringing my innovation to the world. The construction industry is at a crucial point as the global push towards sustainable, green solutions intensifies. I believe my living-biomaterial could play a major role in replacing traditional, flammable, petrochemical-based construction materials with a carbon-sequestering alternative. It’s an exciting time for sustainable technologies, and I’m looking forward to contributing to this transformation.

Alumni spotlight

Bidisha Pandey is a former Lieutenant Commander in the Indian Navy from West Bengal. She studied an MSc in Prosperity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Institute for Global Prosperity and has gone on to do incredibly impressive things. Here, she explains how her time at UCL has set her up for a very bright future…

What led you to applying for a course at UCL?

Coming from an army background and having moved around a lot as a child, I’ve always been fascinated by new environments and different perspectives. After serving in the Navy for ten years, I developed a strong interest in social entrepreneurship. I wanted to study something that combined social science with business, and UCL’s MSc in Prosperity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship was the perfect blend. The course was new, and I found the mix of people with diverse backgrounds really attractive. The idea of learning in such a vibrant, multicultural setting was very exciting to me.

How was it when you first arrived at the university?

I joined UCL during the Covid-19 pandemic, so my arrival in the UK had its challenges. I had to quarantine in a hotel, but UCL’s staff were incredibly supportive. They made sure I had everything I needed and were always proactive in helping me settle in. Once things got going, I found that London is a very student-friendly city, with so many activities and opportunities that I didn’t even have time to do all the ones I was interested in! The university adapted well with a hybrid learning model, where we were split into smaller groups for in-person discussions, which was great for connecting with others.

How did your career in the Indian Navy help you prepare for life at UCL and in London?

My time in the Navy, especially having moved so much during my childhood and then experiencing a wide range of roles over my ten years of service, prepared me well for life at UCL. For example, during my career in the Navy, I took part in an international sailing expedition, travelling from Cape Town to Goa as part of the Cape to Rio International Ocean Sailing expedition with just five others. Experiences like these taught me resilience, adaptability, and discipline. In contrast,

UCL encouraged a much more questioning and tolerant environment, which helped me grow as an individual. The combination of my structured, disciplined background and UCL’s more open approach to learning has created a perfect balance.

What kind of support did you get from UCL during your time here?

UCL was hugely supportive throughout my time there. From the moment I arrived and had to quarantine, the university staff were always available to answer questions and offer help. Academically, I felt really supported by my professors, especially during the hybrid learning setup caused by Covid. There was a strong sense of community amongst staff and students, and UCL put on so many activities to make sure we all felt connected.

What extracurricular activities did you get involved in whilst at UCL?

I volunteered for a six-month internship with ‘Milisa Imbo’ - a green construction start-up in South Africa as a business development consultant through the H-Accelerator programme run by Humans to Humans, an initiative aiming to help early-stage impact and social entrepreneurs from developing countries by connecting them with top-university talents. It was very helpful to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained during this course on field. Furthermore, after I completed my degree, I began volunteering with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. This role gave me an incredible insight into advisory work and policy-making, which was invaluable for my personal and professional growth.

You’ve gone on to do some really impressive things – how are you finding working at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission?

I’m currently leading on bilateral trade between Australia and India at the Australian Trade and

Investment Commission, and I really enjoy it. My role allows me to combine my passion for social sciences and business development, which are two areas my degree really focused on. The brand value of a UCL master’s degree was something my employer really recognised. I am also the Co-Lead on Diversity and Inclusion at Austrade South Asia, meaning I get to work on projects that promote diversity - something I’m deeply passionate about.

How did studying at UCL prepare you for your current job?

UCL equipped me with both the academic knowledge and practical skills needed for my current role. The course was very hands-on, with a lot of focus on practical application and project management. For example, the Urban Futures module involved field trips that taught me to think critically about how local communities shape cities, which is useful in trade relations when you have to understand different market dynamics. My time at UCL also strengthened my business development skills, which have been invaluable in my role at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission.

What are your plans for the future?

Our goal at Austrade South Asia is to leverage Australia’s global leadership in areas such as education, agrifood, renewable energy and emerging technology to meet India’s ambitions. Looking ahead, I see myself playing a role in India’s development as the world’s manufacturing hub. Thanks to my time at UCL, I now have a network of social entrepreneurs and industry experts, and I plan to leverage these connections in the future for women empowerment projects.

Q: Why did you want to take part in the internship?

Drashti: I was drawn to the internship because it offered a chance to apply my academic knowledge in a practical setting, particularly in the areas of social impact and financial analysis. The opportunity to work with a prestigious organisation like Reliance Foundation, known for its transformative initiatives, was particularly appealing, as it aligned with my passion for creating measurable value in both economic and social terms.

We talked to UCL students Drashti Davda (MSc Management), from Mumbai, India, and Izaskun Culebras Porras (MSc Global Governance and Ethics), from Madrid, Spain, who gained work experience at an NGO in India through an internship supported by the UK Turing Scheme...

Izaskun: Reliance Foundation does very relevant work related to my field of study and personal interest. The opportunity to work in the development sector directly in a country which is developing, was something that I thought would be very meaningful. I had already been to India, so it was a great opportunity to reconnect with the culture and the country but with a more adult perspective.

Q: Tell us more about the Reliance Foundation.

Drashti: The Reliance Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Reliance Industries, committed to driving sustainable development across India. The foundation works on key areas such as rural development, healthcare, education, and sports. What sets Reliance Foundation apart is its focus on scalable impact, using innovative solutions to address critical social issues, and ensuring that its interventions are both effective and sustainable.

Izaskun: Through their foundation they collaborate with NGOs, government entities and international organisations to support the social development of India. The nature of the organisation allows its activity to be very agile and flexible and therefore accommodate the unique social context that exists in India.

Q: What did you do during the internship and what did you learn from it?

Drashti: I was primarily involved in developing a Social Return on Investment (SROI) framework to measure the effectiveness of the foundation’s various initiatives. I conducted research on social and environmental impact metrics, devised questionnaires to capture stakeholder feedback, and analysed the financial and social outcomes of several development programs. This experience taught me how to quantify intangible benefits, like social development and environmental sustainability, in financial terms. I also gained a deeper understanding of the challenges involved in implementing large-scale social interventions and the importance of data-driven decision-making.

Izaskun: My work focused on the Foundation’s Women Empowerment initiatives, in particular their communication efforts. I worked on a collaboration with the Gates Foundation which aimed to empower over one million rural women entrepreneurs to gain financial independency. Something valuable I learnt is the fact that women’s empowerment is a spectrum. This means that every place has its unique context and therefore what is considered women empowerment in one place, may not be considered so in a different place.

It made me understand how important it is to focus on bottom-up development efforts.

Q: How do you think this experience will benefit your future career?

Drashti: This experience has equipped me with a unique blend of financial acumen and social impact analysis, which I believe will be invaluable as I move forward in my career. I now have a strong foundation in evaluating both the financial and social outcomes of business decisions, which will be critical in roles that involve strategy, sustainability, and venture capital. Additionally, working at the intersection of finance and social responsibility has reinforced my desire to pursue roles that drive not only profit but also positive societal change.

Izaskun: This internship has given me the opportunity to work in an international environment, having to adapt and learn at a high pace. A common discourse in academia is the dichotomy between the ‘West’ and the ‘Global South’. There are very important factors and aspects of life, both in the personal and professional context, that the ‘West’ would tremendously benefit from learning from the ‘Global South’.

As well as reflecting on our past, we will use the bicentenary year to frame the future, to position ourselves as a forward-facing university, and to convey the type of organisation we will become during our third century.

The UCL200 programme will illustrate how we are addressing current global concerns and seizing opportunities to improve our future through imagination, innovation, and expertise. We are engaging our internal staff and student communities, alumni, partners, and other stakeholders in the development and the delivery of the programme.
