DIRE C TOR'S N OTE Welcome back to the Claire Trevor Theatre and the Department of Drama's annual spring musical. We are thrilled to be presenting Stephen Sondheim’s classic, INTO THE WOODS. Exploring the show’s themes of uncertainty, loss, and community at a time when we are still recovering from a pandemic, is both poignant and timely. With the passing of Stephen Sondheim last fall, this production is dedicated to all the people we have lost in the last two years due to Covid, racial injustice, war and intolerance.

D RA MAT URGS 'S N OT E Your Path Into the Woods in 2022 Fairytales and Open Interpretations Into the Woods premiered in 1986 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego before it moved to Broadway the following year and became Sondheim’s most performed musical. It started as a staged reading Off-Broadway at a small theatre in New York (Playwrights Horizons), where the cast wore baseball caps with the characters’ names attached to them. They simply switched the cap when playing the double, and the piano bench they sat around became the horse, tree stump, and many other objects as needed.

Such an unrealistic approach to stage representations befits the musical that combines different fairytales in one. Into the Woods employs the Grimm Brothers’ tales and weaves them together, where significant thematic and structural overlaps rise to the surface. The short and straightforward fairytales are full of symbols that explode in their full ambivalences and hidden connotations when they begin building relationships with each other. For instance, the tales in Into the Woods – Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk – all start in a domestic setting, and the protagonists go through a radical transformation when they break the boundaries of their familiar surroundings. As they confront the bigger world, the characters face life-threatening dangers that return with a reward when successfully overcome – whatever reward may mean.

Cycle of Stories The new mesh of stories seems to bring the “dark” contents back to the story. For example, act II is full of deaths, fights, confrontations, and moral ambiguities, and yet, it ends with another “I wish…” that opens the show, creating a cycle of continued wishes, fulfillment, disappointment, and destruction.

But, is this really dark? And is dark always bad?

D RA MATU RGS 'S N OT E , con t i n u e d If we consider these tales as a growing-up story from childhood to adolescence, many of the “dangers” and newfound/ transformed identities may signal maturity, physical and mental.

If Little Red’s Cape and Rapunzel’s Tower symbolize childhood innocence or virginity, the Wolf and Prince signify the encounter with the potentially dangerous desires found in oneself, represented as the attraction to the outside world. Indeed, Sondheim and Lapine took hints from Bruno Bettelheim’s Uses of Enchantment (1976), the classic text that decodes fairytale symbols by applying psychoanalysis, which delves into the materialization of suppressed desires, usually that of the sexual. The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s Into the Woods in 2010 actually cast a seductive female character in the role of the harp that Jack steals from the giant.

In a broader view, the tales may be about life in general, where individuals continue to struggle with challenging situations, making questionable decisions when survival is at stake.

The Creators As we stage Into the Woods in June 2022, it has only been six months since Sondheim’s passing in late 2021. Into the Woods is one of Sondheim’s masterpieces developed in collaboration with James Lapine, the book writer and director for the musical. Sondheim and Lapine were leading figures of the “concept musical” that moved musical theatre beyond the traditional book musical of the so-called Golden Age. The concept (or fragmented) musical form, popular during the 1980s, was a form that focused on the theme over plot, nonlinear structure, and self-commentary, deviating from a more naïve and straightforward quality of the book musical. Into the Woods basks in the constant surprises the audience is doomed to have throughout the show, as it brings out the profound social, political, and existential questions buried in what has been perceived as children’s pastimes.
