ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to New Slate 2021, we are excited to be back. With all the creativity, energy, time that we could muster, allied with the zest of the undergraduate dance majors, M.F.A. candidates of ‘22 and ‘23 have created an evening of dance performance that investigates a breadth of human experience.

The design teams, supported by their faculty mentors, have realized, to our delight, a momentous return to live performance.

Many new decisions have been enacted to make this production safe, secure and accessible. The addition of the livestream opportunity means that family and friends that would not ordinarily get an opportunity to see a performance at UC Irvine can do so. We are positive that you will see the marked way in which the choreographers have taken this reemergence back to the stage to its fullest potential. The eight choreographers’ themes of loss, renewal, community and determination overlap and resound, and indeed our facemasked ensemble portrays a distinctive type of unity, making their mark upon living history.

Tonight you are witnessing the work of a group of people that are dedicating their lives to enriching the world through the performing arts, and to produce a show like this takes hundreds and hundreds of hours of rehearsals, consultation, conversation, assessment, modification, critical reflection and much repetition. You’re seeing the result of true-life grit, shaped by a dedication to bringing new ideas to fruition. The labor and the toil are real.

We hope you will enjoy the wellspring of this community’s commitment to excellence.
