This weekend is designed to celebrate the role you have played in your student's journey at UC Irvine. We’ve curated an exciting lineup of programs to help you connect with our vibrant campus community From our resource fair featuring over 30 partners to engaging keynote speakers from our accomplished deans and university leaders, we hope you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the many resources and opportunities available to support your student’s success

Howard Gillman was appointed by the University of California Board of Regents as the sixth chancellor of the University of California, Irvine on Sept. 18, 2014. He is an award-winning scholar and teacher with an expertise in the American Constitution and the Supreme Court He holds faculty appointments in the School of Law, the Department of Political Science (within the School of Social Sciences), and the Department of History (within the School of Social Sciences). He also provides administrative oversight to, and serves as co-chair of the
advisory board of, the University of California’s National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement
Under Chancellor Gillman’s leadership, UC Irvine has accelerated its ascendency among globally preeminent research universities It has been consistently ranked in the top 10 of all public universities in the nation by US News & World Report; increased its annual research support by more than $200 million, setting a new record; established the Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing and the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health; furthered its national leadership in sustainable practices; demonstrated its status as a “first choice” college for undergraduates by receiving more than 144,000 freshman and transfer applications for fall 2024; fostered regional economic development by establishing the premier local entrepreneurial incubator; and developed the Brilliant Future fundraising campaign that sets out a bold and ambitious road map for growth, expanding the university’s capacity to improve lives in our region and around the world.
Chancellor Gillman came to UC Irvine in June 2013 as provost and executive vice chancellor after spending more than two decades at the University of Southern California From 2005 to 2012, he served as dean of the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the largest academic unit at USC. Prior to his service as dean, Chancellor Gillman also served as associate vice provost for research advancement, chair of the Department of Political Science, and director of graduate studies within the Department of Political Science
A native of Southern California, Chancellor Gillman grew up in North Hollywood and was a firstgeneration college student. He earned bachelor’s (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa), masters, and doctoral degrees in political science at UCLA.
L. BANKS JR., PH.D. Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs
Willie L Banks Jr, PhD, has served as the vice chancellor of Student Affairs at the University of California, Irvine since July 2019 In his position, Banks leads the Division of Student Affairs, which includes clusters addressing the holistic development of UC Irvine students. The division is dedicated to transforming the lives of more than 38,000 students and employs over 800 full-time and 1,200 student staff members
Prior to his role at UC Irvine, Banks served as the vice president for Student Affairs at Indiana State University, with a simultaneous appointment as an assistant professor within the Bayh College of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership in the Student Affairs and Higher Education program. Under his leadership, the Division of Student Affairs at Indiana State provided programs and services that supported the co-curricular involvement of over 13,500 students. As part of his responsibilities, Banks was charged with providing oversight for the Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Student Counseling Center, Student Activities and Organizations, Hulman Memorial Student Union, Campus Recreation, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Conduct and Integrity, Residential Life, Dining Services, and Multicultural Services and Programs.
Banks previously served in a variety of positions at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio, including associate dean of students, interim assistant vice president for Student Affairs, and interim vice president for Student Affairs He also spent over 18 years at the University of Georgia in a variety of positions within the Division of Student Affairs, including director of the Tate Student Center and Campus Life, and associate dean of students for Intercultural Affairs.
During his time at the University of Georgia, Banks maintained graduate faculty status with the College of Education and served as an instructor for several courses within the College Student Affairs Administration (CSAA) program, including College Student Ecology, Issues in Student Affairs Administration, and College Student Affairs Interventions.
Banks is passionate about teaching, learning and mentorship and is active in several professional organizations related to higher education and student success He has dedicated his professional career to the field of student affairs, with experience in various capacities overseeing multicultural programs, resource centers and services, student unions, and housing and dining programs.
Professionally, Banks is involved with the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), Association of College Unions International (ACUI), Association of Public Land Grant Institutions (APLU), Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), and Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) National Honor Society.
Banks earned his undergraduate degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and his master’s and PhD in college student affairs administration from the University of Georgia
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering
Magnus Egerstedt is the Stacey Nicholas Dean of Engineering in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine Prior to joining UC Irvine, Egerstedt was on the faculty at the Georgia Institute of Technology, serving as the chair in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the director of Georgia Tech's Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines
He received an M.S. in engineering physics and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden; a B.A. in philosophy from Stockholm University; and was a postdoctoral scholar at Harvard University Egerstedt conducts research in the areas of control theory and robotics, with particular focus on control and coordination of multi-robot systems
Egerstedt is a fellow of IEEE and IFAC and a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science. He has received a number of teaching and research awards, including the Ragazzini Award, the O Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award, the Outstanding Doctoral Advisor Award and the HKN Outstanding Teacher Award from Georgia Tech, and the Alumni of the Year Award from the Royal Institute of Technology
UC Irvine School of Physical Sciences
James S Bullock is dean of the UC Irvine School of Physical Sciences and a professor of physics and astronomy Outside of his work as an academic leader, Bullock leads a research group in cosmology and galaxy formation to understand how galaxies and dark matter have evolved over billions of years of cosmic time. He regularly appears on the Science Channel series, How the Universe Works Bullock is a member and former chair of the James Webb Space Telescope User Committee, and currently serves on the Space Telescope Institute Council, which provides oversight to the operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope, and James Webb Space Telescope He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Aided by super-computer simulations and analytic models, Bullock studies how galaxies and their constituent dark matter halos have formed and evolved over billions of years of cosmic time. By analyzing data that astronomers have collected using the Hubble Space Telescope, the Keck Observatory, and other ground and space telescopes, he works to understand how galaxies, including the Milky Way and its Local Group of galaxies, emerged from the primordial universe One of his long-standing interests has been the use of astrophysical observations to constrain the microphysical nature of dark matter
UC Irvine School of Social Sciences
Bill Maurer is dean of the School of Social Sciences, professor of anthropology and law, and director of the Institute for Money, Technology & Financial Inclusion at UC Irvine He is an internationally recognized expert on the anthropology of law, money and finance. His research, ranging from the study of offshore financial services to the future of money, has been consistently supported by the National Science Foundation as well as multiple public and private foundations, associations and corporations He's founded two major research centers on campus – IMTFI and the Intel-supported Intel Science & Technology Center for Social Computing. In 2016, he was named a fellow of the Filene Research Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Science He currently serves on the board of the UC Irvine Foundation and Orange County United Way
Leigh Poirier serves as the director of strategic services for the Division of Career Pathways at UC Irvine, where she is dedicated to fostering innovative career initiatives that support students, alumni and professionals In her role, she manages data and marketing efforts, explores emerging technologies, and builds connections with campus and community partners to scale services that benefit the UC Irvine community
With over two decades of experience at UC Irvine, Poirier has held leadership positions in several programs, including the Graduate Resource Center and the Health Education Center. She developed and implemented key initiatives that have expanded student success and engagement Passionate about empowering individuals, Poirier also dedicates time to mentoring first-generation college students through her volunteer work with BRDG, a nonprofit organization aimed at supporting underrepresented students in STEM fields.
