n the fall of 2003, UChicago Athletics entered a new era with the opening of the $51 million Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. Designed by famed architect Cesar Pelli, and named for Gerald Ratner (an outfielder at UChicago), the 150,000square-foot facility includes a 1,658-seat competition gymnasium which is home to the UChicago basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.

In addition to the competition gymnasium, the facility features the 50-meter Myers-McLoraine Pool, the Bernard J. DelGiorno Fitness Center, a dance room, classrooms, the Athletics Hall of Fame, locker rooms and offices. In 15 years under Head Coach Mike McGrath, the Maroons have posted a 130-58 overall record and a 76-30 UAA mark at Ratner.

Maroons Foreign Travel Traveling to exciting destinations, both international and domestic, has been a significant feature of the UChicago basketball program. Most recently, the Maroons headed to Spain, in September 2018. The trip to Spain was the fifth international trip the Maroons have made. They visited Italy in 2006, Argentina and Chile in 2009, Ireland in 2012, and Australia and New Zealand in 2015. “From a team standpoint, these trips accomplish two goals,” explained Coach McGrath. “The players and coaches develop a stronger connection to one another while traveling in a foreign country and stepping outside of their comfort zones. On the court, the chance to compete in international play and the additional 10 days of practice prior to leaving, really has an impact on our development as a team.

Additionally, an opportunity like this is an amazing cultural experience. It isn’t a vacation. And we don’t only play basketball. Of course, there is always a lot of fun and basketball is a focus, but much of what we do is centered around learning about a different culture, which is a huge part of the University of Chicago experience. The guys also get to be a part of something that many players before them did too; this helps to further build the connection between past and present Maroons, and contribute to what it means to be a basketball player at UChicago.” The team split their time in Spain be-

In Barcelona, they took in the Picasso Museum, a La Liga soccer match, a private cooking lesson, the beach town of Sitges, and the Sagrada Familia, before heading to Seville where they spent time at the Alcazar of Seville, the Seville Cathedral, Restaurante Zarabanda for a five-course meal, and the riverwalk, where they got to paddleboard. They ended their time abroad by exploring what Madrid had to offer, like Buen Retiro Park, a day trip in Toledo, Sobrino de Botin (the oldest restaurant in the world) and the Museo del Prado, while also hosting a children’s basketball clinic and playing a game against the Estudiantes B team.

current team to have the greatest opportunities possible while playing here. Most importantly, our alumni made great friends here and they want to help these guys develop the same connections.” Senior Max Jacobs recently summed up what the trip to Spain meant to the team. “As the trip came to a close, it was clear to all of us that we would remember every moment from the 10 days, for the rest of our lives; we grew so much as individuals and as a team. The players would like to thank all alumni who helped make this trip a reality – none of this would have been possible without your help.”

It is the generosity of UChicago’s basketball alumni that make these trips possible for the current players and staff. “Opportunities like these are possible because of the generosity of our alumni,” said McGrath. “Our former players are very proud of the experience that they had at UChicago and want the

Maroons Season Travel

The team at the original “Hoosiers” gym.

Travel during the season is a fun and unique opportunity for basketball players at the University of Chicago. During league play, the team travels annually to Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, New York, Pittsburgh, Rochester (N.Y.) and St. Louis. Every year, the Maroons have the chance to stay in hotels in the heart of these cities, letting them explore each place. There are also additional perks, such as alumni dinners with former Maroons in Atlanta, Boston and New York; this is a great way to not only embrace the culture of the place they have traveled to, but also connect with past players in a new type of environment. Eric Nelson (’00) looks forward to these dinners every year. “I love spending time with the current players – hearing the stories, challenges, and struggles of trying to be a student athlete in 2018. It’s funny to me how similar things are, even if it’s 15 years later. I’ve had the chance to meet some great kids over the past few years, and look forward to seeing Mike and the gang each winter.” Scott Green (’04) also shared the sentiment. “Sitting down over dinner with the team is the perfect opportunity to relive the glory days. I have an absolute blast trading stories, with only modest exaggeration, about Coach McGrath and the program. It really reinforces the University of Chicago basketball family.”

Of course, the current players love it too. In fact, for senior Ryan Jacobsen, it was one of the reasons he chose UChicago. “Traveling was definitely a factor in my decision to commit. Being able to fly to places like New York and Atlanta for games, and getting a chance to explore those cities, is a great experience. I especially love the opportunity to get dinner with various alumni, and exchange stories.” Additionally, the program has been fortunate enough to travel to various other cities for non-conference games and tournaments over the years. In 2016-17 for example, the team took its third trip to Memphis, during Coach McGrath’s tenure. It is an adventure the Maroons love to embark on, as it includes stops such as the Civil Rights Museum, enjoying the music on Beale Street and indulging in some southern barbecue. Senior Noah Karras knows that he for one, will forever look back on these team trips. “When I’m graduated from UChicago, I think looking back on traveling with my best friends will be among the most

memorable experiences for me. I had such a great time in Memphis, and am so grateful that I was able to partake in the history and culture with my teammates.” The team has also traveled to Seattle, where they got to experience the sights and sounds of Pikes Market, the beauty of Mount Rainier, and some delicious seafood. The Maroons have visited Baltimore as well, which included a captivating tour of the White House, monuments and Congress, and some tremendous soft-shelled crab. Alex Gustafson (’17) marveled at some of the season travel he had the opportunity to be a part of. “Some of my favorite parts about traveling during the season have been the trips we’ve taken in November (Washington D.C. in 2014, Seattle in 2015). Visiting the White House was an incredible experience and one that all of us are extremely grateful for. Seattle provided some beautiful scenery and unique exploration that brought us even closer as a team.” Over the years, the program has also provided trips to Cleveland, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and San Antonio.

Maroons in the Community Team Mentorship with Disney Elementary Service work and engagement in the community have been important aspects of the basketball program at the University of Chicago, over the last 20 years. The team has participated in a number of outreach activities, including participating in the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life”, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) “Ticket to Reading Rewards” program, and youth basketball clinics in Argentina, Ireland, New Zealand and Spain, while on foreign trips.

UChicago Men’s Basketball with Disney Elementary students

Two years ago, the Maroons started a new service initiative that has already been tremendously successful. The team is serving as mentors to middle school students around the Chicago-land area, using the topic of what being a student-athlete really means, to jump-start discussions about the importance of literacy, balancing sports and academics, and how to be successful in achieving goals both in the classroom and on the court. Initially spearheaded by Coach McGrath and former Maroon Paul Riskus ‘11 (who recently became an assistant principal at one of the participating schools, Disney Elementary, while completing his PhD in education), the outreach project is now a total collaborative effort between both the men’s and women’s programs, the University’s Neighborhood Schools Program (within the Office of Civic Engagement), and College Admissions. “The mentorship partnership provides our kids the opportunity to see the importance of balancing academics and education,” explained Riskus. “After just the first day of spending time with their UChicago mentors at the university, they began to see themselves as college

“Data shows that students of this age who visit a college campus were exponentially more likely to attend college,” McGrath said. “Our basketball program participated in the effort and I thought it was outstanding and have wanted to recreate it ever since.”

students. The impact this has had on our middle school participants is unquestionable; the advice, exposure, and confidence that the Maroons provide our students, is creating a lasting effect on their lives.” While both teams spent most of their time visiting the participating schools, more than 600 students from Ariel Academy, Beethoven Elementary, Bret Harte, Burke Elementary, Carnegie Elementary, Disney Elementary, Ray School, UC Charter School Woodlawn Campus, and UC Charter School Carter G Woodson, also came out to UChicago’s Midway Classic Tournament last year. Additionally, the Maroons made sure that admissions tours of campus and lunches in the dining halls were provided, to really simulate a full college experience.

The benefits of such an initiative go beyond for just the middle schoolers too; the players have found extreme value in taking on mentor roles. “Over the past three years, I have had the wonderful opportunity to mentor kids from Disney Elementary,” said senior Justin Jackson. “Each year, we go up to the school a couple times to read, engage, and encourage them, and then they come down to campus too, for games and one-on-one mentoring. Developing relationships with these kids over the last couple of seasons has been great, in that we can pass the torch to the next generation of studentleaders. This has also been a generative process for me as well, as it has reminded me of the value of the opportunity I have to be a studentathlete at UChicago, and the necessity to make sure future students are given the same eye-opening experiences that I was.”

MIDWAY CLASSIC The UChicago Maroons will be hosting the Midway Classic again this season, a tournament that returns for the second-straight year, due to the generosity of former UChicago men’s and women’s basketball players. It is a great way to start off each season for the program, and is an exciting athletic event for the campus and surrounding Hyde Park communities. The team members and coaches spent the months leading up to the tournament visiting Chicago Public School middle and high school students. There, they spoke to them about being collegiate student-athletes and their paths to success, as well as answered any questions the students had. They also took time to read to the students, as a way to promote reading outside the classroom. These students have been invited to campus for the Midway Classic. They will attend the games, while also taking campus tours and having lunch in the UChicago dining halls. This year’s tournament boasts a field of outstanding schools from diverse geographic regions: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CA), Springfield College (MA) and Ohio Wesleyan University (OH).

Athletics at UChicago Overview The University of Chicago Department of Athletics and Recreation aims to enrich the life of the whole person. We are invested in competitive excellence as we challenge our student-athletes to develop into their best selves as athletes, teammates, students and ultimately, citizens of the world. As athletes they embody physical strength and learn the value of movement to incorporate healthy activity and habits into their lives. Through sport we are committed to teaching how to work collaboratively to reach performance goals, how to embrace diversity of thought and culture, how to persevere through failure with resiliency, how to compete with integrity. We strive to engage our community through fitness and recreation to encourage holistic and healthy living, to build confidence, and to confront challenges physically and mentally.

The UAA UChicago, which sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, is a charter member of the University Athletic Association, an NCAA Division III conference formed in 1986 as a bold statement of what college athletics can and should be — that it is highly desirable and possible for a group of committed institutions to seek excellence in athletics while holding the student-athlete and the institution’s academic mission as the center of focus. The eight members of the UAA include Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, the University of Chicago, the University of Rochester, and Washington University in St. Louis. With its membership in the UAA, UChicago offers its student-athletes the opportunity to compete against athletes and teams from among the top research institutions in the country, as well as travel opportunities comparable to those offered by members of major Division I conferences. UChicago has played a major role in helping the UAA attain its goal of achieving the proper balance between athletics and academics. In Reclaiming the Game: College Sports and Education Values, author William Bowen –– president of the Mellon Foundation –– posed the question, “How has the UAA managed to mount what is, by all signs, a successful intercollegiate program without paying the academic price that is so evident in other similar college athletics conferences?” Bowen continued, “The active involvement of the University of Chicago, with its emphasis on core academic values, has without question been a help in achieving and maintaining this policy.”

Success on the Playing Field In 2017-18, UChicago finished 12th in the nation among 329 NCAA Division III institutions in the final standings for the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which recognizes the top overall athletic programs in the country. UChicago teams notched national top-15 finishes in women’s soccer (NCAA runner-up), men’s soccer (NCAA semifinals), men’s tennis (NCAA semifinals), women’s tennis (NCAA quarterfinals), men’s swimming and diving (12th), women’s swimming and diving (14th) and women’s cross country (14th). That same year, the Maroons also featured 35 All-Americans, 34 national qualifiers, 36 all-region selections, 3 UAA MVPs, 6 UAA/MWC Rookies of the Year and 117 All-UAA performers.

Athletes & Academic Excellence The intercollegiate program at the University of Chicago directly supports the College’s commitment to excellence, and helps to produce scholar-athletes whose primary focus is on their academic achievements. The University of Chicago has a long history of outstanding student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom. During the University of Chicago’s early years as a member of the Big Ten Conference, the athletics program counted numerous distinguished scholar-athletes among its ranks, including 1910 Rhodes Scholar Edwin Hubble, a basketball player who later became a distinguished scientist for whom the Hubble Space Telescope is named. UChicago has furthered that tradition in recent years as its student-athletes have continued to compile an extraordinary record of academic and athletic accomplishment, highlighted by four Rhodes Scholars since 1996, and 297 UAA All-Academic Recognition Award recipients in 2017-18.

Award-Winning Facility In the fall of 2003, Chicago Athletics entered a new era with the opening of the $51 million Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. Designed by famed architect Cesar Pelli, the 150,000-squarefoot facility includes a 1,658-seat competition gymnasium which is home to the Chicago basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams. In addition to the competition gymnasium, the facility features the 50-meter Myers-McLoraine Pool, the Bernard J. DelGiorno Fitness Center, a dance room, classrooms, the Athletics Hall of Fame, locker rooms and offices. In short, the University of Chicago provides student-athletes with what might be the best balance in higher education: an extraordinary commitment to academic excellence recognized all over the world, a high-quality intercollegiate athletics program consistent with its academic mission, unique conference travel and competition, and outstanding athletics and recreational facilities.

The University of Chicago

R

anked in 2018 as the nation’s thirdleading university by U.S. News & World Report for the second year in-a-row, the University of Chicago is one of the world’s great intellectual communities and centers of learning. It has achieved particular distinction in faculty scholarship, the training of graduate students, and for its renowned undergraduate education that emphasizes critical thinking, intellectual depth, and cultural breadth. Founded in 1890 by John D. Rockefeller, the University opened its doors for classes on October 1, 1892, with an enrollment of 594 students. President William Rainey Harper presided over a faculty of 103, which included eight former college presidents. Today, the University features a total enrollment of approximately 16,445 students — including 6,286 undergraduates — and a 2,377-member faculty. The University is private, nondenominational, and coeducational, and it includes the undergraduate College, four graduate divisions, six graduate professional schools, the library, the Graham Center of General Studies, and the University of Chicago Press. The University also features several cultural resources, including the Oriental Institute Museum, Court Theatre, Renaissance Society, and the Smart Museum of Art. Extending along both sides of the Midway Plaisance, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and used for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, the University occupies a 190-acre campus. The English collegiate Gothic style set the general tone for the design and development of the campus. Around a series of tree-shaded quadrangles, imposing buildings of gray limestone with red-tile roofs, and deep-set rectangular windows show off elaborate ornamentation, gargoyles and chimeras, and decorated towers. These quadrangles are dominated by Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, with its 207-foot tower, and by the Joseph Regenstein Library, one of the largest academic libraries in the United States. Many campus structures have been designated national historic landmarks, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House and the site of the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear reaction marked by the Henry Moore sculpture Nuclear Energy. UChicago has had a major impact on American higher education — inventing the four-quarter system, developing extension courses and programs in the liberal arts for adults, establishing a coherent program of general education for undergraduates, and initiating a full-time medical school teaching faculty. UChicago also pioneered orientation week and gives the nation’s oldest teaching awards. Since the University’s founding, more than 80 recipients of the Nobel Prize have been students, researchers, or faculty. The University is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, one of the world’s most exciting and vibrant cities. About 65 percent of the University’s faculty and their families and nearly all of its students live in the Hyde Park neighborhood. One of Chicago’s biggest tourist attractions, the Museum of Science and Industry, is located here, as well as the DuSable Museum of African-American History and the Weiss Museum of Judaica. Just 15 minutes north of Hyde Park is the Chicago Loop, where students and faculty regularly attend an array of theater, movies, art exhibits, museums, and restaurants. Some of Chicago’s main cultural attractions are the Art Institute, the Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony, the Goodman Theatre, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Scores of other professional and community theater, dance, and visual arts organizations are active in the city. Architecturally, Chicago is the home of many major developments in 20thcentury architecture and urban design. One of the nation’s greatest sports cities, Chicago is the home of two Major League Baseball teams – the White Sox and the Cubs – as well as the National Basketball Association Bulls, the National Football League Bears, the National Hockey League Blackhawks, the Major League Soccer Fire, and the Women’s National Basketball Association Sky.

UAA & NCAA Division III The UAA

NCAA Division III

I

n 1987, Chicago became a charter member of a new and unique NCAA Division III conference, the University Athletic Association. Comprised of some of the nation’s leading research institutions, UAA members include Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, the University of Rochester, and Washington University in St. Louis. Since its founding, the UAA has continued to serve as a bold statement of the vision of its founders — that the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence are complementary goals and can be achieved without the compromise of one by the other. Implicit in this vision are three assumptions: • The academic enterprise is the primary element. Studentathletes are just that — students first and athletes second. • Athletic excellence is not to be confused with a win-atall-costs attitude. It properly relates to the caliber of experience offered to students who participate in intercollegiate athletics. • Athletics should not only complement the academic experience, but should also reflect the quality of the academic environment within which they exist. Division III is an approach to athletics — not a synonym for third-rate. Since joining the UAA, Chicago teams have captured 63 conference championships, made 97 NCAA tournament appearances, and posted 16 national top-four finishes. In addition, the Maroons have claimed 19 NCAA individual titles and three have been selected as the national player of the year.

The University of Chicago has competed at the NCAA Division

III level since it was established in 1973.

The largest of the three NCAA Divisions, Division III counted as

members 450 institutions (19 percent public, 81 percent private) in 2017-18.

What is the NCAA Division III?

• Division III features student-athletes who are subject to the

same admission standards, academic standards, housing, and support services as the general student body. Division III studentathletes are not permitted to receive athletically-related financial aid.

• Division III offers an intense and competitive athletics envi-

ronment for student-athletes who play for the love of the game, without the obligation of an athletics scholarship.

• Division III athletics departments place special importance on

the impact of athletics on the participants rather than on the spectators. The student-athlete’s experience is of paramount concern.

The UAA in Theory

• Academic excellence and athletic excellence are not mutually exclusive. • The academic enterprise is the primary element. • Athletic excellence properly relates to the caliber of experience offered to students. • Athletic programs should reflect the quality of the academic environment within which they exist. • A consistent and challenging level of athletic competition should be provided for both women and men.

athletics, and the opportunity to pursue the multitude of other co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities.

• Division III places primary emphasis on regional in-season and

conference competition, while also offering 36 national championships annually.

• Division III playing season and eligibility standards minimize

conflicts between athletics and academics, allowing studentathletes to focus on their academic programs and the achievement of a degree.

The UAA in Practice

• In 2017-18, 31 student-athletes from UAA institutions were recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, four of whom earned the prestigious NCAA Elite 90 award. and 13 were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. • 153 UAA student-athletes received All-American honors in team or individual sports, 11 garnered individual national championship event titles or national Player of the Year honors, and 15 won national titles in relays or doubles. • In 2017-18 NCAA championship competition, 31 UAA teams posted top-10 finishes in their national championships, including 15 among the top-five, while 11 others finished in the top 20.

32

• Division III athletics provides a well-rounded collegiate experi-

ence that involves a balance of rigorous academics, competitive

• Division III athletics departments are dedicated to offering

broad-based programs with a high number and wide range of athletics participation opportunities for both men and women.

• Division III affords student-athletes the opportunity to dis-

cover valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership, which in turn make student-athletes better students and responsible citizens.

• Division III encourages student-athletes to take advantage of

the many opportunities available to them, both within and beyond athletics, so that they may develop their full potential as students, athletes, and citizens.
