-Program NotesHeitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) is considered the most important Latin-American composer of the first half of the 20th Century; in relation to the classical guitar both Villa-Lobos and the Mexican Manuel M. Ponce dominate in both quantity and quality of their compositions during that period. The compositions performed in this concert cover the period between 1908 and 1940. Of these the most significant are the Twelve Études that should be considered as one of the most important masterworks composed for the guitar. Villa-Lobos’ use of innovative techniques as well as the manipulation of texture and his rhythmic and melodic drive are consistent with his other major compositions such as the series of Bachianas and Chôros for a diversity of instrumental ensembles. Eladio Scharrón has taught Classical Guitar at the University of Central Florida in Orlando since 1998. He was a classical guitar professor at the Paris Municipal Conservatories (1980s) and, from 1992 to 1997, at the University of Puerto Rico. His degrees include a BA in music from the University of Puerto Rico, the Diplôme Superieur de Concertiste at the École Normale de Musique de Paris (with studies in guitar with Alberto Ponce), and, from Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), the Performer's Certificate and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree (completed with full scholarships from both the University of Puerto Rico and Eastman School of Music). Eladio Scharrón has won numerous awards including Concurso de Guitarra de la Casa de España in Puerto Rico, International Guitar Competition of Sable Sur Sarthe in France, Research Incentive Award of the University of Central Florida, UCF In-house Research Award, and more recently (2012) the UCF-College of Arts and Humanities Research Incentive and Development Program Award. As a soloist he has participated in many guitar festivals in France, Italy, Peru, USA, etc. Most recently, in November 2012, invited by CONACULTA (the Mexican government cultural branch) and the University of Guanajuato, Eladio Scharrón gave several performances (solo recitals, Master classes and performances as a soloist with the Cervantino Festival-Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra) in Mexico City, Guanajuato and León. He is also the musical director and founder of the "Festival Internacional de Guitarra de San Sebastián" in Puerto Rico. The first issue of this Festival happened in August 2013, the third will happen in May 2015. Currently, he is working on the recording of Manuel M. Ponce’s complete works for guitar, with two compact discs already available under the label Centaur. In August 2014 Dr. Scharrón won a grant from the “Fundación Carvajal” in Puerto Rico for the recording of a CD with a retrospective of works composed for the guitar and premiered or dedicated to him; the recording was completed in November 2014 and is ready for release. He has also collaborated with articles for Soundboard, the Guitar Foundation of America magazine.
