Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Women in Leadership Organising Committee I am delighted to welcome you all here today to the first Women in Leadership Conference in University College Dublin (UCD). The concept for the Women in Leadership conference came from the UCD Musical Society’s decision to produce Legally Blonde the Musical, in an effort to promote female empowerment on campus. Since then the conference has grown from strength the strength. Today’s conference, the first of its kind to be organised by an Irish university, is designed to inspire our delegates but also to address the obstacles that women face in their careers. Many employers “talk the talk” on gender equality, yet women are far less likely to advance to management positions. Social and cultural stereotypes are still in play. Too often, women’s ideas and ambitions are not voiced or not heard. I hope that our speakers can empower each and every delegate here today to strive for success. The UCD Women in Leadership Conference brings women of all ages and backgrounds together to share stories, advice, and experiences. We strive to provide each attendee an inspirational experience through an esteemed set of speakers and Q&A sessions.

A career to be proud of

The committee has worked hard to offer a wealth of speakers and networking opportunities. You are the legacy of the future and the moves you make in the present will shape those in the future. With that idea in mind, we hope that this conference will provide a supportive platform for you to become a pioneer of your own and achieve your goals and beyond. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard Butler and Eoghan Murphy of UCD Societies Council, UCD Alumni in particular Jennie Blake, Michael Foley my co-event organiser for today, UCD Musical Society, Miriam King and Katie Stevens as well as my friends and family. I would like to thank our sponsors today, Arup, Citi, McKinsey & Company, UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School and the RCSI Institute of Leadership. Finally, I would like to thank my employers Abbott Laboratories for supporting me in organising this conference and facilitating my returning home for today from my current placement in a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Baddi, India.

Our employees tell us that they are proud to work at Arup. We give graduates from diverse backgrounds and disciplines the iconic projects, the questioning culture, access to top talent and a programme as carefully designed as our projects.

I hope that you enjoy the day and leave the conference inspired to push your boundaries forward. I would like to extend my appreciation to you for joining us and hope that you enjoy the UCD Women in Leadership Conference.

You choose the direction..

The world’s city isn’t New York or London or Beijing. It’s not Lagos or Sao Paulo or Dubai. Today, the world’s city is wherever you are. Wherever you bring your ideas, drive, passion, and a hope that someone will believe in you. What if a bank made that its job? Wherever people come together to create or build something, we’re there to help make it real. For over 200 years. All around the world.

Elaine Lavery & Hannah O’Reilly Founders, Improper Butter Since leaving UCD in 2012, best friends Elaine Lavery (BBL 12) and Hannah O’Reilly (BComm 12) have converted their shared love of food into Improper Butter, a start-up business that now supplies products to Tesco and SuperValu stores in Ireland, as well as to the UK and the Middle East. Lavery and O’Reilly met in 2009 when they were both part of the UCD Choral Scholars chamber choir. By the time they graduated, Lavery had interned with Goldman Sachs in London and Deloitte in Dublin while O’Reilly had gained experience working in her accountant father’s office. They saw a lot of their classmates coming out of Quinn going down the accountancy and finance routes but that didn’t appeal to either of them. Separately, they each took a year out. Lavery pursued her love of cooking and went to work as a chalet chef in the French Alps. O’Reilly studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, training to be a soprano. At the end of the year, Lavery knew she wanted to continue working in the food area. O’Reilly was at a crossroads. When Lavery told O’Reilly about her business idea, O’Reilly jumped at the chance to come on board. Lavery’s idea for the business was flavoured butters to be used in cooking and in June 2013, the pair started experimenting with different variations, making them up in the kitchen at home, and selling them at farmers’ markets. Based on customer feedback at the markets the pair settled on a range of flavours for retail. Manufacturing is now outsourced to a 90,000 square foot state-of-the art premises in the heart of Ireland. Improper Butter stands out because of its quality and the fact that it uses real Irish butter together with a high concentration of fresh herbs.

Speakers Jacquie Marsh Managing Director, The Butler’s Pantry Born in County Meath, Jacquie Marsh had a strong sense of entrepreneurship from both parents. Her mother moved from Dublin and ran a farm and her father grew the small family clothing manufacturing business to a successful export business until his untimely death at the age of 45. Following a BA in History and Politics from UCD, Jacquie’s first exposure to the food business was as a management graduate with McDonalds during their growth phase in the early 80’s. She then focused on companies in a growth/diversification phase such as Next and PJ Carrolls plc. Jacquie occupied a very diverse range of positions but business growth and development and pursuit of excellence were always the central theme. Jacquie then spent 10 years consulting high potential start-up businesses until in 2000 the opportunity arose to acquire a share in a company which she believed had huge potential and to which she could apply her expertise in business development, marketing and operational excellence. As Managing Director of The Butler’s Pantry, Jacquie has developed The Butler’s Pantry into a leading premium fresh food brand.
