It’s tougher than you think. Turns out I’m tougher than I thought. Graduate Area Manager Programme 7 €61,000 starting salary (rising to €95,750 after four years) 7 5 weeks holidays 7 Healthcare 7 Audi A4 7 All-year recruitment but spaces go quickly Not many employers would ask you to run a multi million euro business after 14 weeks. But that’s the beauty of Aldi. They trust you. They listen to you. You feel like the ‘newbie’ at the start but you just roll your sleeves up and get stuck in. It’s tough. Tougher than I thought it would be. You’re often managing people who have been there for years. You’re organising store openings at breathtaking speed. You’re taken out of your comfort zone on a daily basis and given a million things to juggle. But helping to drive one of Ireland’s fastest growing retailers? It feels utterly amazing. aldirecruitment.ie

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Women in Leadership Organising Committee I am delighted to welcome you all here today to the second Women in Leadership Conference in University College Dublin (UCD). The concept for the Women in Leadership conference came from a group of students and alumni, in an effort to promote female empowerment on campus and encourage confidence and courage in both women’s personal and professional lives. Now in its second year the conference has grown from strength to strength with over 550 delegates here today. Today’s conference is designed to inspire our delegates but also to address the obstacles that women face in their careers. Many employers “talk the talk” on gender equality, yet women are far less likely to advance to management positions. Social and cultural stereotypes are still in play. Too often, women’s ideas and ambitions are not voiced or not heard. I hope that our speakers can empower each and every delegate here today to strive for success. The Women in Leadership Conference brings women and men of all ages and backgrounds together to share stories, advice, and experiences. We strive to provide each attendee with an inspirational experience through an esteemed set of keynote speakers, panel discussions and networking sessions. The committee has worked hard to offer a wealth of speakers and networking opportunities. You are the legacy of the future and the moves you make in the present will shape those in the future. With that idea in mind, we hope that this conference will provide a supportive platform for you to become a pioneer of your own and achieve your goals and beyond. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Richard Butler and Eoghan Murphy of UCD Societies Council, UCD Estate Services, UCD Alumni Relations in particular Niamh Smollen and Sheila Morris, Michael Foley my co-event organiser for today, the student committee – Alice Shanahan, Ciara O’Reilly and Roisin O’Brien, as well as my friends and family. I would like to thank our sponsors today Aldi, Boston Scientific, Citi and especially our title sponsor Arthur Cox. Finally, I would like to thank my employers Abbott Laboratories for supporting me in organising this conference. I hope that you enjoy the day and leave the conference inspired to push your boundaries forward. I would like to extend my appreciation to you for joining us and hope that you enjoy the Arthur Cox UCD Women in Leadership Conference.

The world’s city isn’t New York or London or Beijing. It’s not Lagos or Sao Paulo or Dubai. Today, the world’s city is wherever you are. Wherever you bring your ideas, drive, passion, and a hope that someone will believe in you. What if a bank made that its job? Wherever people come together to create or build something, we’re there to help make it real. For over 200 years. All around the world.

Equality and Business. Equality and Successful Business. Making the Case for Gender Equality Equality is an enabler for competitiveness. Companies and societies depend on the best talent to succeed – regardless of gender, nationality or religion. And business in particular has a key role to play in fostering gender equality. By implementing and scaling positive initiatives that directly benefit women at work, companies can become an important vehicle for fostering the leadership of women. At Arthur Cox, we have moved with purpose beyond declarations of intent to substantive engagement. We are committed to creating and developing an equal and inclusive workplace where women are valued and supported. In our workplace women are encouraged and inspired to reach their full potential while at the same time making our firm stronger and better able to meet the challenges of the future. Under the leadership of two Diversity Partners, we champion a wide range of ‘Gender in the Firm’ initiatives. We believe Arthur Cox is the only Irish law firm with a formal initiative around gender. According to Grainne, Diversity Partner at Arthur Cox: “By committing to gender equality, the firm is enhancing the excellence and potential of all of our business activities. Gender equality produces a more rounded and successful business. We are making steady progress and hope to see that women are equally empowered not only at Arthur Cox but also at the highest leadership levels in business throughout Ireland.” With the full support of the leadership team at Arthur Cox, the success of our ‘Gender in the Firm’ initiative is attributable to a range of award-winning programmes including: Mentoring and Training Bespoke mentoring, training and development for women lawyers at the firm has been put in place to assist in the retention of women in the firm and has created a culture of support in the firm in general. We are a member and founding sponsor of WXN, a women’s executive network that creates and delivers innovative mentoring, professional and personal development to women and their organisations in the pursuit of excellence. Supporting Parents The firm has a ‘Helping Parents’ policy which includes supports provided throughout pregnancy, maternity, adoptive, surrogacy and parental leave. We were the first Irish law firm to provide maternity coaching to our lawyers, facilitated by an external coach. We also provide an outstanding level of support for expectant mothers as they combine this life change with balancing their career. We encourage all returning solicitors to finish each day at 1 pm for the first two weeks of work to give them sufficient space to arrange their competing duties. Full maternity assistance is provided for surrogacy situations also. Shared Parenting Leave In July 2015, we launched our Shared Parenting Leave Policy which allows an Arthur Cox employee who is a father, adopting parent, foster parent or same sex parent the opportunity to apply for fully paid leave after the birth of a child, if their partner wishes to return early. This was the first time such an inclusive, family-focused policy had been introduced in the Irish workplace. The firm also provides two weeks’ paid Paternity leave to all new fathers. 30% Club Ireland One of our partners, Rachel Hussey is a member of the Steering Committee of the 30% Club in Ireland, which was launched in January 2015. The 30% Club is a group of Chairs and CEOs committed to achieving a better gender balance at all levels of organisations. Clodagh became CEO of IMAGE Publications in January 2015. Formerly, she was Commercial Director of the company, a position she had held since August 2011. Clodagh’s responsibilities included overseeing revenues for all titles including IMAGE, IMAGE Interiors & Living, IMAGE Brides, Garden Heaven and Cara along with IMAGE.ie and IMAGE Events. In addition, Clodagh oversaw all print and digital, corporate sales and product brand development initiatives for IMAGE Publications. Before joining IMAGE as advertising manager, Clodagh was at Montrose Media, in both editorial and ad senior positions. Clodagh embraces an industry that is constantly in flux. She is never afraid of change nor is she slow to embrace it. She loves the challenge this dynamic industry presents and is determined to play her part in defining the future shape of it. To this end, Clodagh has attended major publishing conferences abroad including FIPP, Toronto 2015 and Guardian 2016. power by the State in 1982. Keena and Kennedy v the Mahon Trinunal established the right to protect journalistic sources. Margaret Gilsenan

Co-Founder and Head of Strategy, Boys and Girls It was while studying for her Social Science degree in UCD that Margaret developed a huge interest in consumer behaviour & psychology, an interest which lead to her subsequent career in marketing communications. Margaret spent many years in McConnells Advertising starting as a Research Executive before becoming a Planner, then Head of Planning and Board Member. In 2009 in the midst of the recession (and cries of Don’t Do It!), Margaret and her co-founders set up Boys and Girls with the ambition of being the most creative agency in Ireland. This was not a vanity ambition; creatively awarded campaigns have been proven to be 11 times more effective and Boys and Girls wanted to validate the agency claim that “Great Work Works”. Seven years on, that ambition has been realised and Boys and Girls is the most creatively awarded agency in Ireland - winning creative and business effectiveness awards both in Ireland and internationally. The Agency has grown to a business of 45 employees with a turnover of over €8m, and accounts as diverse in geography, focus and size as Three Mobile, Digicel, Danone, McDonnells Curry Sauce, Aldi, Brown Thomas, RaboDirect, Dulux, Škoda and Elave. The challenging aspect of being an Agency Owner is that you have to juggle your own company’s ambitions with those of your Clients, working on growth strategies for a range of brands at different stages in their life cycle, different consumers, different business challenges, different growth trajectories and different levels of digital adoption. All of which creates a unique perspective and approach to business success.

Sinéad McSweeney Managing Director, Twitter Ireland Prior to joining Twitter’s Public Policy team in July 2012, Sinéad was Director of Communications for An Garda Síochána (Ireland’s national police service) for almost five years, having been Director of Media and Public Relations for the Police Service of Northern Ireland between 2004 and 2007. From 1996 to 2004 she held a range of political advisory positions in the Irish government including roles at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Attorney General’s Office. She studied law and qualified as a barrister in 1993.

Retiring from the game in the same year, Sharon took time out to have a family and as the children have grown up she has found her way back to the sidelines of a hockey pitch in the guise of coach and manager. An accomplished musician, Sharon plays the piano and clarinet and is doing her best to stay fit! With very little coverage of women’s sport in the national media Sharon came up with the idea of the website sportswomen.ie, solely dedicated to the coverage of Irish women’s sport. It has gone from strength to strength since it’s inception in January 2015 and Sharon would like to think that sportswomen.ie has played a part in the movement that has brought Irish women’s sport more to the fore in the last two years “Now that I can no longer do the business on the pitch, the challenge now is to bring the achievements of the women that can.”

Having been privileged enough to have been involved with a variety of sports from an early age Sarah’s passion for sport stems not just from sport itself but the power of sport to transform people’s lives. Sarah is also a Director of Boardmatch Ireland, a charity which looks to improve the governance of not for profit organisations. Whilst Sarah’s original connection with UCD was competitive and centred on hockey matches against the University it has developed more positively in recent years with Sarah enthusiastically contributing to the MSc in Sport & Exercise Management.

Rob Hartnett Founder, Sport for Business, Advocate for Parity of Esteem for Women in Sport Rob Hartnett is the founder and CEO of Sport for Business, Ireland’s leading network for sporting and business leaders. He is a strong advocate of the need for parity of esteem in sport for women, sport for men and sport for all. Sport for Business has hosted a number of major events focused on the opportunities available to businesses backing women’s sport. Teaming Up for Women in Sport in November 2016 provided an opportunity for Minister of State for Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, to first outline his ambitious plans to place leadership of sport under an equality spotlight. Sport for Business’ Daily News Digest regularly highlights the challenges faced by Women in Sport but just as often focuses on the great work being done by companies like Liberty Insurance, Lidl, Continental Tyres, Aon, AIB and others who have stepped into the world of Women’s Sport in recent years. Hartnett chose to get involved as an advocate for equality when seeing the difference in opportunity within sport afforded beyond primary school education to his two daughters as opposed to his two sons. Sport for Business was voted the Best Emerging Sports Business of the Year at the 2016 Sport Industry Awards. Web address: www.sportforbusiness.com Twitter: @SportForBusines
