about the cover.

It’s been years since the world stopped due to the COVID-19 and even the universities had no escape from the threat of this virus. Since the world is little-by-little getting back to normal, the University of Caloocan City is currently reviving its golden pre-pandemic days as it opens faceto-face activities as well as reclaiming glories around the country— a resurgence. Despite the long-lasting effects brought by the pandemic, UCCians still retrieve its honor as we are now transitioning to the new normal world.

In this first-ever magazine of The New Crossroads since the pandemic entitled “Revival”, it provides different stories on how UCCians reclaim their glory by engaging in activities and competitions within, and outside the university.

THE NEW CROSSROADS & ITS NEW LOOK...

The fundamental idea of the logo is represented by the fist. It includes a monogram that explains both the abbreviation for TNC and UCC. On the left side, the two fingers that are visible conceal the meanings of the North and South campuses, Mission and Vision, Voice and Truth. As for the color, brown mirrors stability, firmness, and reliability that comprises the value of the publication.

The story behind the logo depicts the mission of campus journalism. As campus journalists, we need to fight for human rights and freedom with integrity. We should hold truth and justice as we serve the mass.

UCC LAUNCHES FRESHMEN ADMISSION ONLINE APPOINTMENT SYSTEM

For the first time in the history of University of Caloocan City, the 2023 UCC Freshmen Admission Test will be facilitated online as the university launches the Freshmen Admission Appointment System (FAAS) initiated by the UCC MIS and UCC VP for Administration Dr. Wenald H. Lopez.

In adherence to the City Government of Caloocan’s thrust headed by Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and to limit the number of applicants on campus per day, aspiring UCCians must fill out the online application first and wait for an Appointment Confirmation Booking via email before proceeding to the campus for submission of requirements.

The FAAS was first introduced in 2020 to give incoming first-year students a chance to still submit and have their appointments amidst the ongoing threat of the pandemic, but it was temporarily put on hold.

This was also the same system that the university used from 2021 to 2022 for scheduling and admitting new applicants.

However, there are various reports that this system also has its downsides; most of the applicants are saying that they cannot access the website, the link is not accessible for them, or frequently, the system is down. “Bakit after masagutan yung appointment date, ang tagal mag

loading? Naka ilang ulit tuloy ako…” a Facebook anonymous user commented on one of the UCC - The New Crossroads FB post.

The new feature functions in the same manner in 2020, but it became more organized and more inclusive. The website also offers Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to clarify confusion and concerns. Graduates from Batch 2022-2023 may fill out the application form through the official website of the university.

UCCIANS PARTICIPATE IN 2022 DOST-RSTW

The Department of Science and Technology – NCR brought the amusement of science to UCC Congressional Campus as they conducted Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) 2022 on December 1 to 3, last year.

DOST-RSTW, a yearly regional celebration that highlights the significant contributions of science and technology, offered different discussions, booths, and activities in which UCCians participated. The Payaman team of Dexty MN, MGamer Corp., and other mobile game developers provided insights into the development of games as a profession and discussed their distinct perspectives on mobile gaming, highlighting the value of science and technology in the creative industry.

Entertaining and interactive science and technology exhibits and food & local products booths were also carried out during the 3-day event.

On the final day of DOSTRSTW, students from Caloocan National Science and Technology High School, Malabon National High School, and Navotas National Science High School participated in a City Modeling Competition to highlight how young people envision sustainable communities in the next 50 years.

Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos, Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST-PHL), Dr. Raul Fabella, and Dr. Lourdes Cruz, National Scientists, also attended the event and imparted their knowledge in STEM Fair

Symposium for the Youth.

In great collaboration with the administration of the University of Caloocan City, DOST-NCR has successfully launched the week-long science and technology celebration.

UCC-SSC CONDUCTS MUSIC FESTIVAL FOR A CAUSE

To give relaxation after a tough first half of the Academic Year 2022-2023, the UCC Supreme Student Council successfully conducted the first-ever grand music festival for a cause dubbed as “Music Festival 2022: Dec-Serve Ko ‘To” in Kalayaan National High School on December 21, 2022.

The event accommodated over 2,500 attendees, including UCCians and Caloocan residents resulting in a joyous and relaxing gathering that every student deserved following the tightness of academic workloads during the semester.

The UCC-SSC managed to invite bands and artists within and outside the city to serenade and make the audience sing from the top of their lungs, such as FIKA, The Happy Pill, AUGUSTUS, Beyond the Sign, Calle Onse, AVI, syd hartha, Bita and the Botflies, NOBITA, and some DJs.

Also present at the event were Glena and Vosso Fanna, both UCCians and university Battle of the

Band champions for the last few years, who have shared their artistry and proved how talented the UCCians are in the field of music. To maintain a peaceful yet fun and safe music festival, the event was assisted by the UCC College of Criminology, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and a Medical Team standing by around the area.

Despite the successful first leg of the fest, the supposed Day 2 of the said event on December 23 has been canceled due to some aspects related to safety, security, and the ticketing system. “Factors concerning safety, security, and ticket sales of the December 23 leg helped us come up with the Decision to CANCEL THE EVENT,” the UCC-SSC explained on the event’s official Facebook page.

However, the Student Council assured that UCCians have something great to look forward to as they provide a sneak peek of the next big event in 2023.

WE ARE READY, BUT WE CAN BE MORE PREPARED

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic devastated the whole world that even academes couldn’t evade. A lot of schools are forced to resume classes through online modality— including the University of Caloocan City.

Almost 3 years have passed and even though the threat of pandemic still exists, schools have started to bring back the traditional way of classes gradually. In UCC, different programs are now transitioning from online class to face-to-face, specially on sessions that involve the student’s major courses.

The University of Caloocan City carefully prepared the transitions of the modality of classes. They established a plan that will benefit not only the students but the faculty as well. The administration made a system where students will only go to the campus if their class requires them to do so— usually major courses.

Students are required to bring their vaccination cards to prove that they’re somehow safe from the virus. UCCians are also encouraged to download the Stay Safe Application showing their health status. Before entering the university premises, a temperature check is required as well. Lastly, students and faculty need to fill-up the log book first for tracing purposes.

The aforementioned are proof that the University of Caloocan City did prepare for traditional classes. However, are those things enough so we can finally go back to full face-to-face? Aside from health related protocols, there are a lot of problems inside and outside the institution that we need to settle first before going back to a full face-to-face set up.

First, the rooms and facilities of the university. Observing the situations within the buildings, some programs do not have their own rooms to have their class. This is very evident in Congressional Campus during the examinations where almost all of the programs are present to take their test. Having no other choices, classes are conducted in the Social Hall where there is no proper ventilation. Schools are the second of a student, but can you still call it a “home” if there’s no comfort at all? Aside from facilities of the university, another concern is the current situation of our transportation system. Any mode of transportation will lessen the time consumed of a student when going to school or on their

consumed of a student when going to school or on their home. However, that’s not the case nowadays. Another big problem for face-to-face classes is the financial stability of the student. Due to the pandemic, a lot of Filipino people lost their jobs and they are currently in the state of recovery in their financial status. We all know that UCC promotes a quality education that is not expensive, but we cannot deny that a student needs money to survive college days as they need to afford uniforms, school supplies, transportation fares, meals, and other things. Privilege is something that not everyone has.

Lastly, even though we have low cases of COVID-19; we are still in the middle of a pandemic. In fact, last April 25 to May 1, the Department of Health reported a total of 1,399 cases of the virus. A small number if we think but we do not know whether that number would increase or not if we take it not so seriously. Therefore, strong health protocols must be observed as always.

These are just some of the problems that we need to address, before going to a full face-to-face class. The University admins together with the Local Government Unit have already done what they can and we appreciate that. However, they can offer more for the sake of UCCians and even students within Caloocan.

Through giving attention and solutions to aforementioned problems and concerns, it will definitely help the lives of every scholar, student, teacher, and anyone within the schools.

University of Caloocan City is indeed ready for the full face-to-face class, however, we can be more prepared for it.

Meanwhile, Cong. Oca Malapitan also shared and assured the public in the project overview that the building will feature a minimalist and modern architecture that will have clean lines, shapes and basic textures in which it is considered as a good strategy of learning as the atmosphere surrounding the facility is critical when it comes to the increase of students’ attention. Having a relaxed and calm mind is essential in order for the students to focus in their lectures in addition to their motivation to learn.

The UCC College of Engineering will offer Industrial Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering programs. Lopez will serve as the Dean of the College of Engineering. It is set to open in academic year 2024-2025.

On the other hand, this incredible accomplishment would not have been possible without the efforts of the Caloocan Local Government Unit and the significant contribution of the project’s main asset, Puregold Inc., which will finance and cater all of the project’s expenses. Congressman Oca Malapitan shared and acknowledged his gratitude toward Puregold as the City Government’s partner in bringing this project to existence as a further sign of appreciation.

The groundbreaking ceremony for this campus happened on June 14, 2021 at Bagong Silang Phase 8A, Barangay 176, North Caloocan. The presence of the former Mayor Oscar Malapitan, now Congressman, as well as former Rep. Along Malapitan, now Mayor, UCC OIC Marilyn De Jesus, DPA, and other university officials had been recognized during the ceremony.

With the help of this new accomplishment, there is no doubt that Caloocan students who want to pursue engineering will definitely be prepared to be leaders in their fields and communities. Indeed, this project aims to promote a free and quality education to all of the future scholars of Caloocan City.

Padayon and see you soon, future Engineers!

CAFÉ MINUTE: A WORTH OF YOUR TIME!

Part of the school curriculum is to execute a work immersion that allows individuals to stimulate their skills and talents in order to use them professionally outside of the school premises. This will help them to sharpen their work ethics, attitude, competencies, and specialization which will guide them to their future workplace.

The Technology and Livelihood Education- Home Economics 3A from the University of Caloocan City-North Congressional Campus executed their work immersion at the Campus premises which gives them a challenge on how to properly set up their business whereas it can be noticeable and attractive to the customer to try their service.

In compliance with School Food Service Management and Entrepreneurship as well as through the guidance of their professor Decina M. Francisco, the BTLE-HE Coordinator, the BTLED-HE work immersion occurred and began on the 14th of April and will last until June since the student’s work immersion has 150 rendered hours for them to complete the compliance.

Are you an aspiring entrepreneur who wants to start a business but doesn’t know how to begin? Don’t worry as Henry Ford stated that, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right.” It is not always easy to start everything, especially when you have doubts about yourself, unless you change the way you think. You will never know unless you try.

Let’s now take a glimpse and be inspired by these young entrepreneurs in their successful business food stalls, which will give us hope and goals on how to begin our business and obtain a progressive future.

The University of Caloocan City (UCC) South Campus Young Entrepreneur Food Stall started on the 4th day of October 2022 and ended on the 20th day of April 2023. Professor Charrie Maniquis, the professor of Business Implementation, was the one who conducted this project for all 4th year Entrepreneur students as part of their requirement on their subject Business Implementation 1 and 2.

For this year’s batch, there are two sections that include six groups which feature a variety of food businesses. However, just like any other business they also encountered hindrances upon starting their food stall These are the three biggest

He also stated that every bit of their cafe construction was made from scratch while most of the equipment that they used was borrowed only thus their creativity helps them to avoid being short with their budget since only the needed ingredients for their product are the only thing that they buy. A legacy — that is how the BTLED-HE 3A describes Cafe Minute because this is the first time that there is an affordable cafe inside the campus premises

dilemmas that they faced: (1) Lack. of training. We all know that training is important in any organization you are in. It helps a business earn more profit and improve its overall productivity. (2) Conflict in terms of ingredient’s availability. Ingredients are important to make the food delectable. If a stream of customers obtain their products at the same time, there’s a tendency that their operation will be temporarily postponed or they’ll rush to the nearest supermarket for restocking. (3) Lastly, the target market. Most of their customers are students since their stall is closest to the university but for other people it’s not really accessible as it is easy to be overlooked.

However, despite experiencing those struggles, all the 4th-year entrepreneurship students stand their ground. They continue to believe in their strengths, talents, and abilities in order for them to achieve their desired goals and finally succeed.

John Llyod E. Agas, a 4thyear student in BS Entrepreneurship 4B, is one of the students behind the food stalls. Agas shared in his interview that undergoing the challenge in their food stall helps them to be trained on how to implement businesses and how to be a risk taker.

He also advised the next students who will do the Young Entrepreneur Food Stall that willingness

in which students can hang out and relax while enjoying a cup of coffee/tea. Cafe Minute also projects how to withstand hardship despite limited resources and restrictions.

Indeed, Cafe Minute is worth your time to visit the place and be fascinated by the joy that their product brings to your stomach. Satisfy your cravings and thirst with the mouth-watering taste of Cafe Minute!

and dedication are the formulas to grow as a good entrepreneur student. Through their determination and willingness, their food stall business is a success!

Just like the young entrepreneurs from UCC, there might be some challenges that will hinder you from making a successful business, but through determination and willingness you will definitely ace your goal!

UCC HEROES SILVER SQUAD RETURNS WITH A BANG AFTER WINNING SEVERAL

COMPETITIONS

Loud and blaring with cheers and congratulations, UCC Heroes Silver Squad made their victorious comeback after winning several competitions they participated in this year.

After almost three years of hiatus from competing due to the pandemic, the team made their memorable comeback after they won Third Place at the Milo Marathon Cheerdance Competition 2023, held at Mall of Asia Open Grounds, Pasay City, on March 26.

They also dominated the Eat Bulaga stage and won against the City University of Pasay at Sayaw Bulaga segment of the noontime show on April 26. After winning the daily round, they competed in the weekly finals last April 29, and their feat continued winning the title of weekly finals champion.

Despite the team’s triumphant comeback, they also faced struggles bringing back the squad’s shape. Head Coach Hans Christian Horne revealed that it has been difficult to regain the squad’s passion and physicality following a two-year break because of the pandemic.

But the Heroes Silver Squad’s determination to compete again made them unstoppable. They exhibited their exquisite moves and impressive routine in various competitions, proving they still have the prowess to claim numerous triumphs.

Head Coach Horne expressed his joy for the team, saying he is more proud than anybody else and delighted with how far the UCC Heroes Silver Squad has progressed. He also stated that he feels happy that all of the team’s efforts have paid off and that the squad has earned a name for itself in the world of cheerleading.

Coach Horne added that the UCC Heroes Silver Squad is open, and the team is happy to welcome new members, any UCCIANS who are interested to join are free to audition for the team.

“We’re currently opening the team sa lahat ng Yusisista na gustong mag-cheerleading, may experience man o wala,– lahat ay pwede namang sumali, basta i-message lang nila yung page ng UCC (Hero Silver Squad) or lapit lang sila sa kahit na sinong player na makikita nila sa school.”

He also hoped that if the university completely allowed sports activities, they would soon post auditions for aspiring squad members on their Facebook page.
