Spring is here! Though it might be difficult to see through the snow here in Cincy... Regardless, we at the UCBAA are looking ahead to a summer of fun with the UC Community Band!

Our Board Community Band Manager, Kristen Price, has been hard at work creating another summer of musical fun. This year we are thrilled to welcome two new directors to the UCCB: Heather Fencik and Chris Nichter! We can’t wait to see their vision for the group.

Do you play a baritone, clarinet or percussion? We always need you to join our ranks! Don’t play one of those? No worries! We still want you to join us.

Echoing Jodi’s letter from the last Bugle, we have heard your feedback on what we can do to make Alumni Band even more fun and meaningful for everyone. We are excited to see our progress, as we have already implemented some of the suggested changes! We hope to see the biggest Alumni Band at Homecoming yet... and since we know the date, you have no excuse.

Please mark your calendars for Friday, October 5 {Reunion} and Saturday, October 6 {Gameday} and join us back at UC! As always, keep checking your email and follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/groups/UCBAA) for communications about upcoming events, photos from recent events, and even some band humor. It’s great to see so many new faces interacting with us online.

Community

BAND

The star of our summer season, community band brings together alumni, current band members, and folks from the community to keep the music alive all year round. ...And it’s not too late to join, if you’re interested!

New Directors Join Community Band This year, we’re proud to have new leadership for the Community Band. Chris Nichter, Bearcat Bands Director, and Heather Fencik, former bassoonist in the Community Band, have stepped up to direct. The two have been working to put together an awesome show for the summer.

Practice Times

Rehearsals begin on May 2, and continue on Wednesday evenings until the last concert in late July. Just a two-hour commitment from 7 - 9 pm once per week is all it takes to put together this damn good band. Dues are low, at just $20. Join us for this fun experience!

Hear the Band Concerts All Over the Tri-State

Even if you can’t commit to the community band this summer, we hope you’ll join us for one of the four FREE concerts throughout the summer. We perform in a variety of locations across Cincinnati, so hopefully you’ll be able to join us for a tune (or two!).

We’re looking forward to putting on four awesome concerts this summer! We hope you’ll share in our enthusiasm and support us as we bring a wide variety of music to the Tri-State area.

CONCERT SEASON

RECAP

It’s hard not to be impressed by a Bearcat Bands concert - and when there are multiple concert bands, jazz bands, small ensembles, and more, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Bravo to the Bearcat Bands on this year’s spring concerts!

Welcome Dr. Mulcahy!

This year saw the addition of a Beginning Band program under the direction of new Associate Director Dr. Krista Mulcahy. Now, college students interested in picking up an instrument, or Bearcat Bands members who wanted to learn a new one had their chance.

Mr. Bearcat Ben Trubach

Clarinet and Future Alumnus, ‘18 Only three men from the Bearcat Bands have ever won the prestigious “Mr. Bearcat” award, a symbol of campus spirit and dedication to one’s alma mater. Graduating senior and Bearcat Bands President Ben Trubach can now name himself as one of them.

Given every year by Sigma Sigma fraternity, the title of Mr. Bearcat is given “to recognize and honor the outstanding graduating senior man who has achieved academic succes, demonstrated leadership in diverse settings, and made a significant contribution to the University of Cincinnati, all while displaying ‘Bearcat spirit.’”

When UCBAA secretary and UC staff member Natalie Ochmann received the nomination notification in her inbox, she could think of no one more deserving than Ben. Having marched with him in undergrad, and seen him grow into a three-time president of the band, she knew that “Bearcat spirit” was in Ben’s blood. Of course, being an outstanding student, as well as a member of Sigma Sigma and Men of METRO didn’t hurt, either.

Despite some stiff competition for the award, Ben prevailed as the winner. We at the UCBAA could not be more proud to have helped with Ben’s nomination, and to welcome him to our alumni ranks in just a short time. Congratulations, Mr. Bearcat!

BEARCATS AT THE

BALLPARK

Thanks to everyone who made it out for this year’s Bearcats at the Ballpark! The UC Alumni Association puts on a special annual celebration of all things Bearcat during a Cincinnati Reds game.

We had a great time watching the game (even if the Reds ultimately disappointed us with a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals). The event was a fun way to welcome in Spring with fellow alumni. If you missed out this year, make sure to look out for information on next year’s event! We’ll be putting together a group again for the old ball game.
