The first project is a combination of a collaborative project and also individual design outcomes for the portfolio. You will, as a team, and with other students, fabricate and assemble a large spatial event as a collaborative meal on the quad on the Canterbury campus of the university using the basis of the Forest Table that the previous MA students constructed. You will be split into ten groups, each group will have a section of the Forest Table. You will be making a collaborative event which will centre around a seated meal. You will choose a theme or way of approaching the meal. You might make props/ costumes, automated machines, projections, lighting, interventions and food!! We will allocate you the part of the table once you have a sense of what sort of work you are progressing. You can change the table, you can add or take away from the table, you can use all sorts of materials and activities for inspiration. You might consider a craft, behaviour or material to direct the drama. You might think about the atmosphere, props and change over time. You are required to build into the experience, to make devices or body architecture, lighting or animation, maybe even sound to create and curate the experience you have imagined. You might consider a theme, possibly a type of meal, type of food, time period or part of culture, for example a festival to respond to. It is the centenary of the Bahaus, a famous school of design which forms the model for a lot of the teaching methods in European art and design schools. The central idea of the teaching and design outcomes from the tutors and students was the total work of art where all aspects of design from the cutlery to the architecture. They also had fantastic parties with amazing costumes! UCA is celebrating this milestone with a week of celebrations. The general form of the installation is a performance and event on Friday the 1st of November at the end of the Bahaus week at UCA with a review on Thursday the 7th of November. One of the most important skills of design is documenting and exploring time based media. The major deliverable for this project is a film documenting the installation and ‘performance’ of the meal. This needs to be of a professional standard using film editing software. Think about how you could curate your film, record the event in the moment and how you manage the data and quality of the imagery. Think about the atmosphere and space of the film, the position of the camera and the way you might light the space. Think about how you might draw the time and space of the event you create. How can you show the change of the experience over time. How can you manage the details, the inhabitation, the food?! Impossibly T hin Table by Junya Ishigami (2006)
