ABOUT

YAYASAN

SWARI SARASWATI Founded in 2004, Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati is an independent, not-for-profit foundation committed to enriching the lives and livelihoods of Indonesians through a range of community-building arts, cultural, and culinary programs. It was founded by Janet DeNeefe and Ketut Suardana as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing to boost the economy and reflower the community after the devastating effects of the bombings.

The goal of the Foundation is to help fulfill the creative needs of Indonesia, its individuals and communities, while showcasing its cultural diversity – both traditional and contemporary – to the world. Creating a space for crosscultural exchange and open-minded dialogue and discussions is at the heart of the Foundation.

It achieves this through its core initiatives, Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, Ubud Food Festival, and KEMBALI 2020: A Rebuild Bali Festival. Through these major international events, the Foundation promotes Ubud and Bali as a center for arts and culture, while showcasing the artists, writers, chefs, and producers of Indonesia on an international stage. Our events provide enormous networking opportunities, both locally and internationally, and help Indonesians reach their full potential through educational and capacity-building programs.

This year has truly been a roller coaster ride for everyone. When we established Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati in 2004, and presented the first Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, it was designed as a healing project to boost the economy and the faded spirit of our community in response to the devastation of the first Bali bombiwngs. And here we are, 16 years later, revisiting this same mission of rebuilding Bali.

In a year of almighty change, we have reimagined Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and Ubud Food Festival to create a powerful online event. KEMBALI 2020: A Rebuild Bali Festival is aimed at boosting Indonesia’s creative industries and to give a voice to Bali’s young entrepreneurs and to embrace extraordinary international talent.

Once again, we would like to thank our Festival family, our dedicated network of partners, donors, supporters, and volunteers who help bring the event to life. Many have supported us from the beginning and we are honored that they believe in what we are trying to achieve.

This year’s Festival unites over 120 brave voices, creative minds, and bold thinkers in digital format.

There will be in conversations, panel discussions, music, films, performances, cooking demos, workshops, and documentaries, all online.

I am proud to share with you our first digital Festival with our most diverse program yet. It has been an incredible learning journey, and we are thrilled we could make it happen. Makna kembali adalah untuk mengembalikan kekuatan sosial, aspek kehidupan manusia secara fisik dan spirit yang telah diporakporandakan pandemi, melalui berbagai kegiatan daring bersama para penulis, chef, jurnalis, pegiat ekonomi kreatif, spiritual practicioner dan lainnya.

Pandemi telah merenggut jutaan nyawa, memunculkan penyakit baru, mengakibatkan hancurnya perekonomian masyarakat, dan menambah angka kemiskinan. Ini adalah pukulan berat, terlebih untuk Bali yang mengandalkan sektor pariwisata.

Melalui KEMBALI20, semoga kita mendapat inspirasi dari para pembicara Festival melalui karya-karya mereka.

Sejatinya manusia secara lahiriah telah memiliki tiga unsur kekuatan yang tak terpisahkan, yang disebut Tri Pramana. Secara makrokosmos, ini berarti menganalisa kebenaran secara langsung, memahami kebenaran dari fenomena yang terjadi, dan meyakini kebenaran dari agama. Pandemi telah berdampak serius pada sendi-sendi kehidupan manusia. Festival tahunan Ubud Writers & Readers Festival pun akhirnya perlu penyesuaian, yaitu dengan hadirnya KEMBALI 2020: A Rebuild Bali Festival.

Suasana seperti ini menyadarkan kita pada perjalanan sebuah kehidupan; Rwa Bhineda atau dua sisi kehidupan, positif-negatif, baik-buruk, yang diselimuti oleh ruang dan waktu. Hubungan bumi dan manusia, makrokosmos dan mikrokosmos, tidak terlepas dengan Rwa Bhineda ini. Hal ini dapat dilihat dalam sistem kalender Bali, warisan para leluhur, yang dikenal dengan istilah wariga, sasih, dan wuku.

Filosofi Tri Hita Karana yang menjelaskan hubungan antara Tuhan, manusia, dan alam juga tertuang dalam kalender Bali. Ini mencerminkan bagaimana keharmonisan, keselarasan, dan keserasian dapat dijaga.

Bagi saya, sangatlah tepat langkah Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati dalam menyelenggarakan KEMBALI20. Kembali sendiri bermakna sangat luas, di mana kita dapat melihat refleksi diri sendiri (Paraning Dumadi). Ini waktunya kita melihat kembali hubungan kita dengan Yang Maha Kuasa dan alam.

WELCOME TO A Rebuild Bali Festival KEMBALI 2020 is a digital program designed to inspire, excite, reconnect, and revitalize the Balinese and Indonesian community from 29 October—8 November 2020.

The theme Kembali highlights our beloved island, Bali, one of the world’s leading tourist destinations. Amidst a global pandemic, KEMBALI20 will be this year’s most important celebration of Indonesia’s creative arts and culinary richness, a pillar of human resilience and survival.

Kembali—the Indonesian word for return—represents revitalisation in the face of global challenges. The Festival will unite people in Bali and other regions in Indonesia, together with an international audience, at a time when travel is largely impossible and creating connections is more important than ever before.

Bringing together the most successful elements of Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and Ubud Food Festival, the program includes panel discussions, workshops, book launches, poetry readings, film screenings, cooking demos, and performances. KEMBALI20 was made possible with the support of the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati Patron Program. Over 50 sessions as part of KEMBALI20 will be free for all users, continuing the Foundation’s longstanding commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.

HOW TO ACCESS ABOUT THE MAIN PROGRAM

From intimate conversations between leading authors, artists, activists, chefs, farmers, thinkers, and performers, to fiery debates on some of the region’s most pressing issues, KEMBALI20 Main Program sessioins take place from 29 October–8 November. Spanning 60+ sessions over 11 days, it’s available to view on ubudwritersfestival.com with a user account.

To access KEMBALI20 Workshops, we ask you to make a minimum donation of IDR200,000 or IDR250,000 per session.

When you donate to join a Workshop, you will also automatically receive access to 60+ KEMBALI20 Main Program sessions.

After donating, you will receive an email from our team with information on how to join the Workshop and access the Main Program sessions.

You can view the sessions directly on their event page. Please note that the time listed on the Festival schedule follows Central Indonesian Time (WITA/ UTC+8).

The future of Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati depends on your support and generosity. All donations contribute to the production costs of KEMBALI20 and to support the Foundation that presents Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and Ubud Food Festival. We also work with other foundations across Bali to support various artistic, cultural, and culinary initiatives.

Once you’ve signed up for a session, you will receive an email with a registration link and Unique Code. You can find the Unique Code at the bottom of the email, below the QR Code. Please complete the information required for registration.

Once you have successfully registered, use your username and password each time you log in to your account.

Supported by Megatix, we provide several donation options. To donate, please follow the instructions provided

by Megatix. You can donate with the following methods: credit card, bank transfer (Indonesian account only), at an Indonesian convenience store (Alfamart, Alfamidi, Alfaexpress, LAWSON, or DAN+DAN stores), or with DOKU Wallet.

To access KEMBALI20 Main Program sessions, we ask you to make a minimum donation of IDR150,000. You can also make nominal donations of IDR200,000, IDR500,000, IDR1,000,000 or more. By donating, you will receive access to all 60+ KEMBALI20 Main Program sessions, which you can rewatch for a month after the Festival. To stream the sessions, you must first create a user account via the registration link that you will receive after donating.

ACCESS OTHER PROGRAMS

A service fee of 3% is applied for every donation.

Book Launches, Film Screenings, Music & Arts, and Teater Kuliner are available for free, so you don’t need to create a user account. You can stream these free programs on our website or YouTube channel.

If you have a user account, you can rewatch the Main Program sessions for one month after the Festival. The free programs will also be available to rewatch on our YouTube channel.

A transaction fee is applied depending on the chosen method.

1. When you make a donation to the Yayasan Patron Program using Megatix, you will receive a Unique Code. You can find the Unique Code at the bottom of your Megatix ticket email, below the QR Code.

4. After you fill out all the information, click Register.

7. If you’ve inputted the correct information (name, email and Unique Code), you will receive the confirmation email within 1x24 hours. If you don’t receive any email within that time frame, please contact our team via info@ubudwritersfestival.com.

2. Once you’ve made your donation and received your Unique Code, go to www.ubudwritersfestival.com/ register/ to register an account.

3. Please complete the information required to register an account. To fill out this form, use the same name and email as your Megatix account and the Unique Code that was given at the bottom of your Megatix ticket.

5. You will receive a notification on screen “Success! Thank you for your submission. Confirmation email will be sent to your inbox in 1x24 hours”.

Kadek Purnami • Indonesia Kadek Purnami is a writer and event planner based in Bali. Kadek Suardika • Indonesia Kadek Suardika has been growing food for his family and community since 2004. He collaborated with various Indonesian NGOs before founding Emas Hitam Indonesia in 2015. His inspiring work, Ancut Garden, made him the leader of his Subak and won him a scholarship to Vandana Shiva’s Earth University. Since then he has been travelling around Indonesia delivering training on Permaculture Design, Agroecology, and Agroforestry.

Made Taro • Indonesia Born in Sengkidu, East Bali, Made Taro was educated as an archeologist, but found his calling in writing poetry and folklore for children. He has written 15 books on traditional folklore, in addition to songs and games inspired by oral storytelling. He has received numerous accolades for his work in literature, including Ubud Writers & Readers Festival Lifetime Achievement Award 2019.

Mangku Muriati • Indonesia Mangku Muriati is a Balinese painter known for her Kamasan-style, a form of painting often associated with the East Javanese kingdom of Majapahit.

At age 32, she became a priestess and considers painting and priestly duties as complementary.

Both need extensive knowledge of characters and stories, ultimately derived from the sacred scripture. Her artworks have been exhibited in Bali and internationally.

Mas Ruscitadewi • Indonesia Named Best Participant in the 2020 Virtual Actor Track by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, Anak Agung Sagung Mas Ruscitadewi has been writing since elementary school. She enjoys writing song lyrics, poems, short stories, monologues, and scripts. She often teaches writing and theatre to children, university students, HIV/AIDS patients, and prisoners in Kerobokan Prison.

Maya Soetoro-Ng • USA Maya Soetoro-Ng is a Consultant for the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance and Leaders: Asia Pacific Program. She is a former Director of the Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. She is also the author of a children’s book, Ladder to the Moon, and is currently writing a Young Adult novel entitled Yellowwood.

Award-winning former producer, Meri Fatin, started her podcast, Rare Air in 2015. She has chaired conversations at Perth Festival for over a decade and was presenter of Writing WA’s monthly Cover to Cover series for Westlink TV. More recently, she has worked with the Disrupted Festival of Ideas and Quantum Words Perth.

Monez • Indonesia Monez is a professional illustrator from Bali. He was also commissioned by well-known illustration applications Affinity Designer and Procreate.

Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai • Vietnam Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai has a PhD in Creative Writing from Lancaster University, United Kingdom and is an award-winning author whose work includes poetry, fiction and nonfiction in Vietnamese.

Her debut novel and first book in English, The Mountains Sing, is a New York Times Editors’ Choice and voted as the best new historical fiction novel by Goodreads readers.

Ni Ketut Sudiani • Indonesia Ni Ketut Sudiani is an editor for IDN Times. She was a journalist for arts and culture at the Tribun Bali, Kompas Gramedia Group. She was listed as 200 Best Author of World Bank International Essay Writing Competition and selected as the Indonesian delegation for the second East Asian Seas Youth Forum in 2009. Her works have been published in multiple anthologies.

Ni Wayan Idayati • Indonesia Ni Wayan Idayati writes poetries, essays, and articles. Her works have been published in multiple media and anthologies, including Sauk Seloko (2012), Kavaleri Malam Hari (2017), and Senyum Lembah Ijen (2018). Her first solo poetry collection Doa Ikan Kecil was published in 2019. Now, she manages the programs at Bentara Budaya Bali, Kompas Gramedia cultural space.

Michael Vatikiotis • Singapore/UK Singapore-based writer and journalist Michael Vatikiotis is the Asia Regional Director of Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Geneva-based private foundation that facilitates dialogue to resolve armed conflict. He has written novels set in Indonesia that examine Southeast Asian politics.

Currently, he is finishing a family memoir set in the Middle East, which will be published in 2021.

Morganics • Australia Award-winning hip hop artist, poet and community worker based in Cairns, Australia, Morganics has performed internationally from New York to Tanzania. He also works around Australia on community educational hip hop projects. He has released an album For My Friends And My Enemies and a feature film Survival Tactics. His book, Hip Hop Is My Passport, arrives soon.

Ni Ketut Putri Minangsari • Indonesia Classical Balinese dancer, Ni Ketut Minangsari (also known as Putri) performs and teaches dancing out of Bali. She is passionate about preserving the art of Legong, one of Bali’s oldest and most beloved performance arts. She also writes and performs poetry and is one of the founders of Unmasked Poetry Open Mic, the first spoken word poetry community in Indonesia.

Ni Made Frischa Aswarini • Indonesia Balinese poet, Ni Made Frischa Aswarini, has had work translated into French and English. Her first poetry book, Tanda bagi Tanya, was longlisted for Khatulistiwa Literary Award 2018. She has been invited to several literary festivals in Indonesia and Malaysia and in 2020, she was awarded a Fulbright Master’s degree scholarship to study in USA.

Nicholas Saputra • Indonesia Nicholas Saputra is an award-winning actor and film producer. In 2005, he won the Best Actor award at the Indonesian Movie Awards and the Citra Award for Best Leading Actor at the Indonesian Film Festival. He is also the executive producer and producer for three acclaimed environmental films under his production company, Tanakhir Films.

Putu Juli Sastrawan • Indonesia Born in Klungkung, Bali, Putu Juli Sastrawan has won the 2017 Anti-Corruption Festival essay competition. His work is part of several anthologies, such as Kota Para Ibu (2014) and Yang Kemudian Dipecahbelahkan dari Puisi (2019). His zine was exhibited at the 2019 Singapore Art Book Fair. He is also the co-writer of short film Lasagna (Eve Without Adam) in 2018.

Reyza Ramadhan • Indonesia An enthusiastic agricultural geek, Reyza Ramadhan joined the Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations (FAO) as national personnel.

His regular work deeply concerned about eliminating hunger and creating decent work in agriculture sector. Lately, Parti Gastronomi also becomes his platform for celebrating Indonesia’s culinary scene and its glorious agriculture heritage.

Roman Krznaric • Australia/UK Australian philosopher, Roman Krznaric, writes about the power of ideas to change society.

His work has been published in more than 20 languages and is widely influential among political and ecological campaigners, education reformers, social entrepreneurs, and designers. An acclaimed public speaker, his talks and workshops have taken him from a London prison to Google’s headquarters in California.

She has received the Vaclav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent in 2015 and was recognised as one of BBC’s 100 Women in 2018 and BBC Cultural Frontline’s 12 Artists that Changed the World in 2019.

Sazha Busha is a food lover who captures her culinary journey through eye-catching images, which has now become her professional career. Her attention to detail and perseverance has led her to become a part of the Fujifilm X Team. She also works as a food stylist and F&B concept developer.

Sekar Langit • Indonesia Sekar Langit published her debut novel 3.67 in 2019. Silvina Miguel • Argentina After more than two decades working for Argentinian media as a producer, writer and director, Silvina Miguel moved to Bali in 2015 and discovered permaculture. She has been involved in the NGO Emas Hitam Indonesia, based on Ancut Garden. Since 2020, she works as a Sustainability Consultant, developing a waste management program at Alila Villas Uluwatu and Alila Ubud.

Sophie McNeill • Australia Award-winning Sophie McNeill is the Australian researcher for Human Rights Watch, based in Western Australia. She was formerly an investigative reporter with ABC’s Four Corners program and has been a foreign correspondent for the ABC and SBS in the Middle East. She is also the author of We Can’t Say We Didn’t Know: Dispatches from an Age of Impunity.

Susi Pudjiastuti • Indonesia Susi Pudjiastuti is a well-known entrepreneur, who owns a fishery export company, PT ASI Pudjiastuti, and aviation company, PT ASI Pudjiastuti Aviation.

Her persistence in eradicating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) in Indonesia has garnered national and international recognition. She was Indonesia’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries from 2014–2019.

Tan Lioe Ie • Indonesia Tan Lioe Ie is the first Indonesian poet that uses Chinese symbolic images in his poetry. His works have been published in national media outlets and more than 30 anthologies. His first poetry book Kita Bersaudara has been translated to English, his second book Malam Cahaya Lampion was translated to Dutch and lastly Ciam Si: Puisi-puisi Ramalan was translated to French.

Tyson Yunkaporta is an academic, arts critic, and a researcher who belongs to the Apalech Clan in North Queensland. He is also the author of Sand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World.

Valiant Budi (also known as Vabyo) is an awardwinning author, songwriter, and scriptwriter.

In his latest book Tukar Takdir, he explores the inevitability of fate and unexpected events. Over the past five years, his works have been heavily influenced by his experience as a stroke survivor.

Vanesa Martida • Indonesia Born in Denpasar, Vanesa Martida is a member of the creative writing community in Bali, Sahaja.

Since 2011, she has been actively involved in various cultural arts program at Bentara Budaya Bali. In 2019, she directed a short film Andaka Janu, which was selected as top ten finalist for the Anti-Corruption Film Festival by Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission.

Warih Wisatsana • Indonesia Warih Wisatsana’s multi-award winning poetry has been translated into Dutch, English, Italian, German, Portuguese, and French. His poetry collections Ikan Terbang Tak Berkawan, May Fire and Other Poems, and Batu Ibu were among the Five Best Poetry Books at the 2018 Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa Award, and Buku Puisi Rekomendasi Tempo 2018.

Wayan Arca • Indonesia I Wayan Arca Bertayasa’s family had been growing coffee since 1980, but Arca wanted to become a mixologist. He successfully helped bolster Sarong, Mama San, and Hujan Locale with his cocktail creativity. In 2013, he decided to pursue coffee farming. Using his mixology experience, he experimented with different processing methods. His specialty coffee is now known island-wide as Arca Ulian Coffee.

Vita Datau • Indonesia Vita Datau is the Founder and Chair at the Indonesia Gastronomy Network and Chair of the Acceleration Team for Development of Culinary and Shopping Tourism at Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism. She was the former President of the Academy Gastronomy of Indonesia and has been involved in the gastronomy industry in Indonesia, especially with cultural diversity, sustainability, and community development.

Warwick Purser • Australia He came to Bali in 1968 and decided to stay in Indonesia, accepted as a consultant to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

He then founded Out of Asia in 1990, one of Southeast Asia’s largest exporters of hand crafted products, and wrote Made in Indonesia: A Tribute to the Country’s Craftspeople to introduce Indonesia’s creative workers to the world.

Wayan Jengki Sunarta • Indonesia Wayan Jengki Sunarta is an author and poet from Bali. His work includes poems such as Solilokui (2020) and Amor Fati (2019), novel Magening (2015), short story Cakra Punarbhawa (2005), and more. His works have been published by numerous national publications, such as Kompas, Tempo, The Jakarta Post, Jawa Pos, and Media Indonesia.

Wicaksono Sarosa has been working on urban issues for more than 35 years. He was involved in the planning and designing several new towns in Indonesia. He has also been training and advising cities as well as urban communities not only in Indonesia but also in various other countries in Asia. He assists national and international agencies on urban matters.

William Dalrymple • UK/India Award-winning author William Dalrymple found success from his first book, In Xanadu, shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize. His second book, City of Djinns, won the 1994 Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. He has also written television series, Stones of the Raj and Indian Journeys, which won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Series at BAFTA in 2002.

Will Harris • UK Will Harris is a writer and editor. His poem SAY was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem 2019. In 2019, he received a poetry fellowship from the Arts Foundation.

His debut pamphlet of poems All This Is Implied (HappenStance, 2017) was joint winner of the London Review Bookshop Pamphlet of the Year.

What types of digital programs are available?

The program categories are Main Program, Workshops, Book Launches, Music & Arts, Film Screenings, and Teater Kuliner (cooking demos).

Digital programs are divided into two categories, pre-recorded and livestreamed.

The pre-recorded sessions were recorded ahead of the Festival to cater to the speakers’ different time zones, but you can ask your questions beforehand on the individual session pages.

Do I still need to create a user account to view the Book Launches, Music & Arts, Film Screenings, and Teater Kuliner?

No, these sessions are free and can be watched on the website without creating a user account, or the Festival’s YouTube channel.

Can I watch the sessions with a friend or family member?

You can watch the sessions with a friend or family member if you are watching from the same screen. If not, then you will need a separate user account.

What time zone are you using when streaming the sessions?

Please note that the time listed on the Festival schedule follows Central Indonesian Time (WITA/UTC+8).

What is YSEALI?

Who is YSEALI?

Launched in 2013, the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is the U.S. government’s signature program to strengthen partnerships with emerging leaders in Southeast Asia; to expand their skills as effective civic, economic and non-governmental leaders in the region; and to encourage them to work together across borders to solve regional challenges.

YSEALI includes members from these countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Thailand and Vietnam and is open to young people ages 18-35.

Responding to priorities from youth in the ASEAN region, YSEALI programs focus on four themes:

Why YSEALI? Approximately 65% of people in the ASEAN region are under the age of 35. These 400 million youth will define the Asia Pacific region for decades to come, so their full participation in solving global challenges is critical to the development and prosperity of the region. YSEALI brings young people together in support of a people-centered ASEAN Community.

How Can You Participate?

YSEALI Academic Fellow The program brings undergraduates or recently graduated students between the ages of 18 and 25 to the United States for a five-week institute held on the campus of a U.S. college or university. Each cohort of fellows studies one of three themes: Civic Engagement, Environmental Issues, or Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development.

YSEALI Professional Fellows This program gives participants ages 25-35 the opportunity to spend five weeks in the United States, including four weeks working directly with American counterparts in individually tailored work placements with non-profit organizations, state and government and private-sector offices across Kembali20 Program Book 60 local the country.

Regional Workshops YSEALI Generation Regional Workshops bring together youth from all ASEAN countries to develop practical skills, learn about regional problems, and collaborate on solving common challenges.

YSEALI Seeds for the Future Grant YSEALI Seeds for the Future is a small grants competition in Southeast Asia. It provides funding for the region’s most promising young leaders to carry out projects that improve their communities, countries and the region.
