B ri ti sh C o n te mpo rary Ar tist Je ssi ca Z oo b The dreamy appeal of artist Jessica Zoob is now available in fabrics and wall coverings inspired by a storm, a mountain, or a love affair – or possibly all three.

It was a marriage made in design heaven when Emily Mould of interior designers Romo approached the contemporary impressionist Jessica Zoob.

This followed an exhibition of Zoob’s work in London, which fate had located on the doorstep of Romo’s showroom. Design Director Mould says it was a challenging task to accurately capture and translate six of Zoob’s paintings in repeat patterns, whilst remaining true to the original.

Mould was determined that new technology, together with a human eye for aesthetics and detail, could translate Zoob’s work into a breathtaking new range. The result: arresting fabrics for curtains and cushions, and wallpapers, for the Romo Black Edition range entitled ‘Desires’.

Zoob was delighted with the result. She said at the recent London Design Week launch: “I’m so excited to be working with Romo as they hold the same values as I do. I’m a complete perfectionist. They surpassed my expectations - they look so beautiful they have the colours just right. I’m so proud to be part of this whole venture.”

It’s easy to see why the contemporary impressionist’s work has captivated so many followers. Her paintings are heavily textured through the use of oil paints over underlying structures of gel mixed with glass, sand, cement and gesso.

Prices for her art work start at £70 for an A4 print (available through UBER-Interiors.com) whilst her originals sell for many thousands. She said: “I want anyone who likes my work to be able to have it in their homes, and even the postcards look really pretty in frames.”

In terms of design, there are few rules so let your imagination run riot. However, when it comes to choosing the actual type of flooring, remember that hallways and stairs see the heaviest traffic.

So with an eye on practicality, think about something beautiful that is also durable; this does not necessarily limit you to a flat weave 100% wool. Silver: the theme gleams Naturally, the spirit of Bulgari is a constant and inspiring design thread that runs throughout the hotel. The firmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s founder, Sotirio Bulgari, began his business as a Roman silversmith, and it is only natural that silver should run in the DNA and spirit of the hotel.

As a guest, you are greeted with contemporary Bulgari silver pieces in reception. Head for an aperitif and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll discover the bar echoes the technique of hammered silver. Your bedside table lamps are inspired by Bulgari candlesticks, and the magnificent chandeliers in the ballroom are made in, yes, solid silver.

Even the custom made silk curtains are adorned with a pattern inspired by a Bulgari brooch from the 1800s.

Bulgariâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention to detail is evident in the use of exquisite marbles, fine woods and unique detailing such as the polished Sapele Mahogany wood panels; emerald and gold mosaic design of the pool.

Quality over quantity By major city centre standards, the Bulgari Hotel is suitably small and select. It offers just 85 rooms and suites, each pervading an air of contemporary design chic.

Their ambience extends to Il Ristorante, which you enter by descending a show-stopping staircase. Its walls are graced with enchanting Bulgari jewellery sketches dating back to 1920s and 30s.

Be sure also to visit the Bulgari Spa which is perhaps one of the most spacious in London.

Arranged over two levels, it boasts a 25m swimming pool lined with shimmering green and gold mosaic tiles.

It is hard to imagine that the bustling heart of London SW1 lies just outside. The hotel is an enclave to savour; a visual feast which, like Bulgari jewellery itself, is infinitely special.

HOW WYNYARD HALL GAINED THE SPA RETREAT IT DESERVED THE VERY ESSENCE OF A TRANQUIL SPA, IN A BREATHTAKING AND SERENE LOCATION.

Wynward Hall in the Durham Tees Valley had two major attributes that cried out for a fabulous new spa retreat.

The first was the breathtaking grounds of the Hall itself. And the second: a fabulous Grade II listed building which, although a bare shell, was rich in potential for a new lease of life.

Tom Coan and Richard Gowland of Rigo Spa were invited to make a site visit by the owner and CEO of Wynyard Hall, Paul Mackings and Allison Antonopolous (daughter of Sir John Hall).

Inspired by the visit, the Rigo Spa team then got to work, space planning the area. Their plan duly created a viable scheme which included a generous reception and meeting space, four treatment rooms, changing facilities, relaxation areas and a substantial thermal suite.

At the heart of any wellness facility project is the need for a free-flowing yet functional path.

It is a challenge which Rigo Spa relishes: bathers should be able to slowly raise the temperature

of the body, then relax and cool down. The temperatures ranges should then be widened and the body taken consecutively warmer and cooler over gradual steps.

The design solution led to the thermal suite being located around a central table feature, leading off to the luxury feature cabins. A large aroma steam room which is infused with salt vapour has been placed adjacent to an ice fountain. Two showers with various automated features (including a cold drench shower) are enveloped in a snail shape, creating a further intriguing feature for the bathers. Alternatively bathers can relax in the 4 seater Rhassoul automatic steam and shower room, exploring how a range of different muds can exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. You can relax on the large curved heated bench, overlooking the lake, before entering the rustic stone and cedarclad herbal sauna, and then on to the outdoor heated vitality spa.

UBER seeks out the best in design - Settlers Barbados

SETTLERS WANTED FOR NEW HABITATION

Each beachfront property will boast direct access to the beach and incomparable ocean vistas.

You have to say one thing about those bearded settlers who first slumped on a Barbados beach and decided to stay: they had exquisite taste.

Now they are working their magic once again.

They picked a spot which to this day remains one of the most gorgeous on the whole of the island, on the legendary platinum coast.

The intention is to demolish the existing structures on the plot and create a haven of 12 magnificent private villas, each with their own pools, within the 3 acres of lush mature gardens.

Today, their foresight is being marked by an enticing new development, appropriately named ‘Settlers’.

It’s the latest development from the family behind the irresistible Coral Reef Club and the Sandpiper, both of which have deservedly taken their place in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

At Sensory we have transformed spaces in some of the most demanding environments. A project on a super yacht or an exquisite home is not just a technical challenge; it must be carried out with the utmost regard for appearance, form and function.

This project in London (see photo right) began life as a request to turn a bedroom into a home cinema. Accordingly we designed a stand-alone projection cinema, with two-tiered cinema seating and the mighty all-round acoustics of a 7.1 surround sound system.

Inspired by the possibilities, the owners extended the brief to include distributed audio and video around the apartment. They also wanted to keep things simple, so we answered this need with a system controlled by iPad Minis. This gives the whole family easy and practical access to different music, SKY HD, movies and more.

We installed a Sonos system to take audio all around the property, and a Kaleidescape system in the cinema, loaded with all the family DVDs, for distributed viewing on all TVs (see photo above). The owners also chose Apple TVs in key rooms, enabling them to stream content from their phones or tablets.

The result: a fabulously versatile entertainment system serving different places, choices and people. The engineering behind glazing systems has come of age, with exciting possibilities.

Now, the traditional boundaries between interior and exterior are becoming delightfully blurred. This results in being able to take the house out to the garden, and vice versa. Areas where you can relax and sit down to dine as a family of four - or a party of 30 - are becoming increasingly common. With level thresholds throughout, and glazed walls that can retract, the internal spaces can be enjoyed outside, simply and easily.

A house should also shift its focus throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a place for morning coffee and quite another for an evening drink as light, time, atmosphere and use vary though the day. Spaces should reflect this, with careful consideration to orientation and outlook. Cars and parking areas, although essential, do not provide the best outlook and if possible they should be tucked away (in this instance to the north-eastern corner of the plot). Garaging is useful not only for cars: it also provides a single storey buffer, both acoustically and visually, to the neighbours.

In this home, each main ground floor room has a direct link to the landscape by making sure that the main circulation is embedded deep within the plan. A curved glass roof provides natural light and the curve encourages the eye back out to the garden beyond.

On the other side of this curve, another buffer - in this case, the swimming pool - also puts space between the owners and neighbours.

With delightful decadence the pool also acts like a natural extension of the Master Suite.

The design also shows how an ultra contemporary living space can still respect and work with the local vernacular. Much of the architectural language is eloquently Victorian. A steeply pitched roof maximises the useable accommodation within, providing a self-contained flat for staff, or a bedroom suite for an independent teenager, or a flat for Granny. Bay windows provide solar shading and protection from the rain, and high chimneys give variety to the roof line.

This imposing and airy residence has set many of the standards now synonymous with a superhome, designed by Calderpeel fgp. It has been followed by others, each with the same hallmarks of pushing boundaries of design, structural performance and tight constraints.

Architectural garden sculptures and water features add another layer of interest to the initial garden design as does the contrast of hard landscaping and soft planting.

The journey from design plans on paper through to the fruition of the project is one of exploration. Barnes Walker always considers the wealth of options that come with natural stone, sculpture, water, furniture, statuary and other ornaments.

In several projects, Barnes Walker have commissioned David Harber to design and fabricate dramatic sculptural elements.

Heaven and Earth Sculptures: Portal Right: A garden can be the perfect environment for sculpture. This large contemporary Portal sculpture was produced from an amalgam of oxidised steel and mirror-polished stainless steel.

The two metals have been interwoven, creating a random and organic series of petals, designed to mimic and reflect the patterns found in nature.

It can also serve as a dramatic frame for a focal point.

Armillary Spheres Far right: Ingenuity meets art. As well as being a fully functioning sundial, these hand-made pieces are crafted and calculated to a specific location to make them highly accurate time pieces. They can also be personalised with mottoes or poems, and since they are designed to last longer than a lifetime, a nice touch is to engrave them with the people or families who first commissioned them.

It may come as some surprise, then, to discover that the car you’re looking at below is in fact a BMW. But then, even BMW’s more sober cars such as the 3 Series have always come with the chance to opt for teeth-jangling performance.

There are many surprises in the new BMW i8.

The first is simply that it’s a BMW at all. A world apart from the BMW heartland we all know, this is a car styled to thrill and built to amaze.

The long wheelbase; the short overhangs; the purposeful stance that suggests a car just waiting to be unleashed. In every respect the BMW i8 exudes the muscular aura of a mighty sports car.

But it’s the show-stopping dihedral doors that leave the most powerful visual impression. In a dramatic flourish, they swing up, transforming the car into a piece of automotive sculpture. Yet when closed, they’re absorbed into the sleekest aerodynamic frame, disappearing into a form whose ultimate aim is clear: to surge forwards with the least possible resistance through the air.

In this, it succeeds with alacrity, harnessing the environmental benefits of electromobility working alongside BMW’s mastery of conventional petrol power. The electric drive, a powerful 131 hp (96 kW), is located on the front axle.

The rear axle is driven by a purposeful BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with 231 hp (170 kW) of peak performance and up to 320 Nm of torque.

Combined with the electrical boost of the hybrid system, these power sources accelerate the BMW i8 from 0 to 62mph in under 4.4 seconds*.

This is achieved with a significant saving in fuel and CO2 emissions, with emissions of a minuscule 59 g/km*.

Charging the car is quick as well as simple: you plug it into the BMW i Wallbox which optimises the process to give you a charged car (0-80%) in under two hours. The battery won’t run flat, either, since additional energy is obtained via Brake Energy Regeneration.

As you drive your new Maserati Quattroporte, you could argue you know what it’s like to drive a Ferrari.

Cleverly, the Quattroporte blends the seemingly opposite qualities of luxury and comfort with fire and brimstone. All three models of the Quattroporte come with full leather upholstery (which includes the dashboard), a leading edge touchscreen interface, a rear view camera and Maserati’s Skyhook adaptive dampers.

Being a chef means that even a visit to a restaurant on holiday has an element of work to it.

At least, that’s what I like to argue, although when that restaurant is as special as this one, that really is no hardship.

So there we were on a special break to Barbados, and although you don’t want to make too many fixed plans in such a laid back place, Cin Cin was definitely one. It’s a fabulous yet unpretentious restaurant situated on the west coast in the St. James district. It also boasts an unforgettable al fresco setting.

The welcome was warm and little details like our table not being ready really didn’t matter – not when you can relax in their fashionable, air conditioned lounge with its commanding views of the ocean. We chose from their endlessly tempting list of cocktails, settling for a sublime passion fruit concoction, while nibbling at a beautiful plate of fritto misto. A perfect start.

Kevin Snook is a chef, entrepreneur and author. He trained in two renowned threeMichelin starred restaurants: Le Moulin de Mougins, under the guidance of Roger Verge, and the Bonne Auberge in Antibes. His passion for travel then took him to Canada, where he owned two restaurants. He won many awards and accolades through his love of organic produce.

Kevin continued his travels, this time to the Caribbean, St. Lucia and then on to the magical island of Mustique. His passion for food has evolved but his philosophy is still the same. He prepares simple, fresh, seasonal dishes, often seasoned with his own spices, drawn from different ethnic cuisines. He then adds his own culinary twist to give each dish his signature.

After 35 years Kevin still has his own catering company, and has written and published four cookery books. He also runs Bray Cottages in the culinary village of Bray on Thames, taking care of food lovers from all parts of the globe.

And so to our table which, as I’d requested, was out on the open-air terrace. With its gentle lighting, and the lap of the waves below, Cin Cin writes the book on romantic settings. All we needed now was the perfect accompaniment of a dinner that did true justice to the vista and the vibe.

That’s just what happened after we’d agonised over Cin Cin’s menu of mainly Mediterranean dishes energised with the frisson and verve of Caribbean spices. First came spinach, mushroom and ricotta ravioli with toasted pine nuts and a creamy tomato sauce with fresh basil. This competed with asparagus and Parma ham salad with a perfectly cooked poached egg and crunchy croutons. The result: a score draw, with both being fresh, creative and beautifully presented. Perhaps my only note here was that the portions were a little on the small side, but in truth were perfectly adequate.

Then came seared yellowfin tuna with a lovely spiced seasoning, so fresh it tasted like it had only just left the ocean below us. Full marks to the waiter for noting my request that I like the pan just to scare it, and keep it rare. My partner opted for the roasted rack of lamb which came in a honey mustard crust, presented with a creamy polenta and a delicious ragu. Again, beautifully executed.

I am really excited to tell you about our new project; UnFOLDing! It’s a collaborative dinner to unfold new ideas and exchange inspiration.

For years we’ve been talking a lot about working properly with our Chef de Cuisine Chris King from Roux at The Landau, but when our suppliers got involved, the idea snowballed. The concept was simple: invite some of our very special guests and serve them an epic dinner paired with totally creative cocktails, with all proceeds going to charity.

The purpose was to get some new ideas and, for once, let the artistes of both cocktails and food work together side by side in one kitchen.

After spending a number of days discussing and drafting the menu (and almost missing the deadline) the adrenaline levels rose as we realised how difficult it is to come up with amazing cocktail pairings. In most cases it is either Chef or a bartender who comes up with a dish or cocktail, and the other creates something to complement it. We decided to do it differently and work on the menu together.

The aperitif is the curtain raiser for the night; it sets the tone of the entire evening, and we left

our guests in no doubt this was going to be a special experience. We served them an aperitif consisting of Becherovka, Gin, fresh citrus and tonic water in beautiful ceramic cups with incorporated straw, which allowed us to dress the entire glass with baby vegetables. Chris wanted to serve smoked salmon with caviar, so to go with that we created a savoury twist on classic Bellini with parsnip, honey & champagne.

Following that came plump and delicious scallops, and because there was so much amazing rhubarb that week we thought we must celebrate this British classic. We squeezed the juice from the rhubarb and shook it with fino sherry, orange liqueur, lemon juice and agave nectar. Since this was meant to challenge not only us, but also the diners, the roasted quail was served with probably the most unusual pairing of the evening: vermouth cocktail infused with cepes. Delicious!

Baby lamb from the Pyrenees deserves an ultra special red, but instead I came up with ‘Manhattan’ style drink. Because red will always have that pleasant acidity, which Manhattan lacks, I also opted for verjus to go with it.

Just before dessert we served cheese with Pear eau de vie, Gewürztraminer and vinegar garnished

with fresh jasmine flowers and bergamot peel. The dessert is the grand finale and this was the time to challenge our guests once again. So instead of simply presenting them with dessert we placed a bowl with golden nuggets in front of each guest.

The very same moment Chef, my colleague Simone and I entered the room with massive clay jars full of hot chocolate blended with mezcal, chipotle and vermouth. Using molinos (traditional Mexican swizzle sticks) we quickly whisked the chocolate and poured it over golden nuggets made of yet more Mexican chocolate.

All of this has certainly made you thirsty, so here is an easy recipe to make at home.

RHUBARB • 40ml Tio Pepe fino sherry • 30ml Orange liqueur (Cointreau, Merlet, or another triple sec) • 40ml Rhubarb juice • 15ml Lemon juice • 15ml Agave syrup • 1pcs Grapefruit peel Method: Shake all ingredients in shaker and strain into chilled wine glass, and spray the glass with grapefruit peel.

Great news for savers, good news for pensions and a shock to the system for company owners of residential property. The Gent’s 5 minute guide to how the Budget may have affected you...

Savers have taken a beating in recent years. Miserable rates of interest have mostly failed to keep up even with inflation. And just to twist the knife, if you have to complete a tax return you must take the trouble to record each of the meagre ‘gains’ you’ve made.

Savers

The Budget was a reminder that spare cash should put it into an ISA. From July of this year you’ll be able to stash away even more, and enjoy the growth tax free.

At the moment, you have an allowance each year to use in a cash ISA, and another for a stocks and shares ISA. From July, the two will be merged into a single limit of £15,000 a year - so you can put the lot into cash, or split it as you choose.

So it was a surprise to see a thoroughly generous Budget for savers announced in March.

Or was it? With an election next year, George Osborne knows there are millions of disgruntled savers and pensioners - each of whom has a vote to make.

Limits on Premium Bonds also rise to £40,000 in June, and to £50,000 in 2015.

Pensions High value residential properties Then came a bit of a shock - if you own a residential property through a company. The Chancellor announced that there will be new bands for the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED). He is bringing certain ‘enveloped’ properties worth over £1 million and up to £2 million into the charge with effect from 1 April 2015. Properties worth over £500,000 and up to £1 million don’t escape either, but will only be affected from 1 April 2016.

With immediate effect the Government has extended the 15% Stamp Duty Land Tax rate applied to enveloped residential properties, to those worth over £500,000.

Changes are also afoot for non-residents selling UK residential property. Watch this space.

The Chancellor has announced big changes to the current rules.

In short, if you have a Defined Contribution Pension Scheme (DC), from 2015 you will no longer have to buy an annuity with the proceeds. In fact you will have complete freedom to do as you wish, which inevitably gave rise to “Buy a Ferrari with your pension” headlines. One thing you might want to do is take advantage of a ‘Pensioner Bond’ for over 65s. Interest rates are to be announced but a one-year bond may pay 2.8% and a four-year bond 4%.

Personal taxes Everyone got a little more from their tax allowances. The personal allowance on income rises from £10,000 to £10,500.

The higher rate threshold also rises from £41,450 to £41,865, and then by a further 1 per cent to £42,285 next year.
