Welcome
to another issue of focused, Upper Bucks County. Unity, Growth and Collaboration is the focus this year.
At no time in recent events has this simple purpose been more apparent to me than on Christmas Day, 2021, when a horrific fire took the lives of a father, two children, and two beloved family pets.
A family is suddenly torn and plunged into mourning. A school district, neighborhood, and community left speechless.
4
In the wake of the fire, Upper Bucks County came together. We embraced the family’s survivors as well as a neighbor whose home and property was also impacted by the firefighting and rescue efforts. We were united by grief and determination to come together and offer support.
As a mother, wife and resident I was overwhelmed by both the King family’s tragic loss – and just as quickly – by the outpouring of support.
After the fire, I received regular phone calls from our business owners and members asking, ‘What can we do? How can we help?’
And help we did. Money was raised, items were donated and help was offered in the 24 short hours immediately following the fire, and beyond.
But it doesn’t, or it shouldn’t, take a seismic shift – like the pandemic, a cancer diagnosis or a devastating fire – to challenge our perceptions of what life is all about.
Where needs are great so is the opportunity to respond, and to grow.
When we’re paying attention we see children, gardens, communities and our businesses grow. And when we grow together we forge collaborative relationships.
We come together for “stuff the bus” campaigns for youngsters who need school supplies. We stock food pantries – again and again – so those with much can share with those who have less. We welcome newcomers into our communities – and our businesses – as employees, customers and vendors.
We begin to understand how precious everyday life is, alongside the routine tasks that go into living it.
Maybe you shop more now for daily staples in our local retail districts to support small family businesses. Your patronage helps businesses grow. Maybe you’re a business owner who needs to hire fresh talent. You begin by working with our area educators – in the Palisades, Pennridge and Quakertown Community School Districts – to recruit young people. Through internships, jobs and shadowing opportunities, you help the next generation discover where their talents and passions can lead.
As economic shifts and trends trickle down from the federal, state and county levels our business owners, manufacturing companies, school districts and health care services continue to need capable, conscientious employees to fill open positions and move us all forward. And there’s no doubt much of that new and raw talent is in plain sight, here in our own backyards. From strengthening connections and forging partnerships to facilitating those newfound relationships, we’re here to help you. Please know our door is always open.
Together we’re finding our way.

Our watchwords:
Unity, Growth & Collaboration
Being mindful has a lot to do with living our best lives locally. It’s where we shop, how we tend to our families, and where we invest our energy.
Despite being more “socially connected” than any previous generations, the past few years have ironically taught us it’s still easy to feel alone. That makes living local even more imperative. We do this by forging connections in our daily lives with those around us.
Being invested in – and connected to – our communities and one another can take many forms. From making a point to shop and dine to support our friends and neighbors in business to attending school plays and concerts. We’re blessed in Upper Bucks County with an abundance of natural spaces: From our many municipal parks, trails, and biking areas to high-quality water sources like Lake Nockamixon, Lake Galena, and the Delaware River.
Supporting our local farmers – from beef to beekeepers – as well as growers and farmers markets builds unity through community.
We’re at our best when we’re comfortably in unity. We do this by supporting one another –through our triumphs and heartbreaking tragedies.
We accomplish this by living regular, ordinary lives and by making those moments extraordinary.
When we attend youth or high school football games, musicals, plays and art shows we’re part of the larger picture. When we buy from school booster clubs and support events like “Shop with a Cop” organized by Pennsylvania State Police and carried out by our local police departments, we show unity. Other ways to support booster clubs – and to help them grow and flourish is by supporting flower and plant sale drives. Consider buying some of your spring plants and flowering bulbs – or holiday plants and poinsettias – from local clubs and organizations.
We want to come together and collaborate. New collaborations between our restaurants, local brewers, wine makers, florists, farmers, and others support and help refine our buying habits. More than only meeting consumer needs, collaborative purchasing – whether from a tasting menu or supporting brew pubs or farm-to-table dining events – they expand and grow our connections.
Collaborations between educators, businesses, industr y and trade organizations help grow our future managers, machinists, technicians, trades folk, and service professionals while strengthening our communities for future generations.

Recreation and Unity – Finding Common Ground
Walk, take a bike ride or hike along any of the Upper Bucks Rail Trails links in Quakertown and Richland Township, part of the Highlands Trail system. These links unify our area and extend a handshake to near neighbors in Coopersburg and Upper Saucon Township in Lehigh County. Here you’ll find cordial likeminded folk enjoying the trails, the landscapes changing seasons, the company of nature and one another.
At Lake Nockamixon, kayak and paddle board enthusiasts offer friendly greetings as they launch into the water or navigate along the banks searching for darting fish, snapping or box turtles, and even “jelly balls”. These primitive colonies of aquatic “moss animals” indicate a waterways high quality and are anchored to submerged tree limbs and twigs.
Folks on water ways are united in the pursuit of active recreation in a place they love to visit and explore.
At Lake Galena in Peace Valley Reservoir, New Britain Township, you’ll find access to small craft boating for kayakers, those with canoes and a boat rental. Several nature trails make biking, walking and jogging a pleasurable visit, and there’s a nature center to explore, too. Ample parking makes a visit easy to navigate.
Among Upper Bucks County’s small parks and water sources, visit Lake Towhee in Haycock Township for
hiking, paddling, fishing, and camping. The Giving Pond in Upper Black Eddy is another of our beauty spots, easily explored from a canoe.
For those interested in the Victorian era in Bucks County, the privately owned Historic Perkasie Park Camp Meeting is a National Historic District site, while Menlo Park and other areas offer children’s swimming, recreation, and paths for walking.
Along the Delaware River, enjoy gorgeous views from the Delaware Canal State Park. Brush up on some history, too. This roughly 58-mile distance, completed in 1832, stretches from Easton to Bristol. It is part of a broader network of waterways once essential to the region’s building, transportation, and “river towns” economy. Today this historic thoroughfare offers gorgeous seasonal views and a tranquil setting for walking and biking.
Strike up a conversation with other passers-by. And consider this – we’ve got something significant in common. We’re folks enjoying outdoor recreation. We’re searching for connections. We’re pulled to the landscape, scenery, beauty spots, and overall health and wellness. We’re drawn to the same places.
A smile, passing hello, or friendly greeting takes only a moment – and it’s a tonic to brighten our shared experience of the day.

Active recreation and spaces bring people together.
Public boat launches at Lake Nockamixon and Lake Galena, which are free of charge, make enjoying water craft pursuit easy. LL Bean, an outdoor gear and equipment outfitter, offers kayak, paddleboard classes, and group outing opportunities at Lake Nockamixon.

Collaboration, Growth & Dining
We don’t think often enough about the relationships needed to set a piping hot plate before us at dinnertime.
From growers and harvesters, producers and transportation – all before the chef’s raw ingredients are gathered together – restaurant essentials like ingredients and tools are part of an important, collaborative strand.
Fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry and fish, as well as the herbs and spices sought to transform them, are part of a larger indispensable chain. Chefs rely on dependable partners to source ingredients needed to prepare and serve up signature plates – from simple to sumptuous.
Farm-to-table initiatives – growing in popularity over the past decade, make us more aware of this necessary relationship. Chef gardens grow their own to supply some of the kitchen’s freshest, just-picked ingredients. Growing from seed or seedlings adds another entry point for growth and sustainability.
We’ve learned a lot over the past few years about what it means to dine out. The definition of eating out for many of us has also changed. Al fresco dining saw a massive jump in popularity and has become a respite for many of us.
Takeout – a staple offering for many restaurants even before the pandemic – shifted as more people opted to support their local eateries by ordering and picking up lunch or dinner. As a result, curbside entered our vocabulary as a new “drive-thru” form.
For many of our Upper Bucks County chef-owners and small operators, the response to eating outdoors was strong enough to make some version of the outdoor dining experience continue and expand.
Collaborations between local restaurateurs and brewers, wine and spirit makers, continue to bring
innovative fare, tasting events and learning opportunities to patrons and visitors. These efforts expand what we know as consumers and create new revenue outlets for restaurants and local spirits and beverage makers.
Cocktails to-go – an important revenue lifeline for bars and restaurants and a way for patrons to support them – were temporarily made legal by the Pennsylvania legislature during the pandemic. State legislators are working to craft a version of this stop-gap legislation to make to-go cocktails permanent. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org
Bucks County is known for farming. The county’s landscape, climate and rich soils consistently birth an abundance of fruit from its many working orchards. From spring strawberries to summer’s blueberries and cherries, peaches in July and new and heirloom varieties of crisp apples in September through October.

Collaborative Arts & Entertainment
By nature, many of the arts we enjoy – from music and dance to plays and performances – are collaborative. We may not consider being an audience member a collaboration, but it is. The conversation between performers and the audience is as much collaboration as any shared relationship.
Think about what’s involved in nurturing a young singer or instrumentalist. From private lessons or tutoring to being part of a small group, ensemble, choir, band or orchestra, musicians must collaborate to create –the sum of individual parts making up the glorious whole.
Those kinds of collaborations are natural and a given, but what about unconventional collaborations? The municipal officials who create spaces for performances to flourish – like the Univest Performance Center at Quakertown’s Park at 4th? Or Perkasie’s Summer Concert amphitheater venue at Lenape Park? When we appreciate and attend arts events, shows and galleries or live entertainment we collaborate with creators.
Making events available as a showcase in public spaces requires collaboration.
From car and art shows in Quakertown, Perkasie
and Tinicum to seasonal outdoor festivals and Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, we collaborate and unite our communities when we gather together.
Upper Bucks County is home to private art gallery events and local live music hosted by our wineries and restaurants. It’s hard not to find art and entertainment opportunities right in our own backyards. Make a point to be a supporter and collaborator by getting out to events close by and encouraging others to enjoy and support them, too.
En Plein Air events, French for painting out of doors, are held throughout Bucks County in various locations. Even if you’re not a painter, you can collaborate by buying local and supporting those artists who make their paintings of landscapes and scenic vistas available for sale.
Bucks County’s scenic landscapes, grand old stone buildings, covered bridges, and natural spaces have a centuries-long legacy of attracting artists, poets, writers and musicians. Search them out. Take a moment to talk to local creators about why – and where – they find their inspiration. Challenge yourself to find inspiration, too. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org

When was the last time you stopped at a roadside stand, a farmers market, or a truck patch, which is a small garden area from which the grower sells? It might be a little harder to find someone selling fat cabbages from a Ford tailgate but, when you do, rest assured this “just picked” offering for sale is about as fresh as if you’d pulled it from the ground.
Farmers’ markets, by nature, are places to gather, browse and buy, and enjoy the fruits of other’s hands. They unify us in more than sourcing food and goods: They bind us in a communal exercise to shop for our needs and support local growers, crafters, and makers.
Our Upper Bucks County markets range from those operating outdoors – and with the seasons – to yearround indoor public and farmers markets. All are popular with locals and visitors alike in Upper Bucks County.
Pop-up grower stands on country roads assure patrons of the same fresh-from-the-field quality. Look for just-picked and gathered flower bunches filled with oldfashioned favorites like vibrant purple or pristine white statice, lobelia, and dahlias, to corn, lettuce, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, turnips, and pumpkins.
Beyond provisions and comestibles, local crafters and makers provide much for the home. Seek highquality, hand-crafted furniture, home accessories, and décor. Savor knitted socks, hats, gloves, or woven fiber art pieces like scarves, table runners, or blankets. Here you’ll find rich thread to weave into the fabric of daily life, along with just about anything needed to dress and outfit the family.
Vintage shops offer a broad range of gently used clothing and accessories. Antique shops provide a window into the past through a wide assortment of furnishings, accessories, and decorative pieces. Look for pale green or pink Depression glass, vintage vinyl records, lace and textiles, kiddie toy peddle cars, holiday decorations, glass ornaments, and so much more. These new-to-you items can become conversation starters for visiting friends and memory catalysts to spark the telling –and retelling – of your own family stories. History
Growing Our History
It’s no accident that Bucks County’s rich, arable soils provide an able foundation for those who settle here – from agriculture to anchoring family roots.
Whether you’ve lived in Upper Bucks County your entire life or are a relative newcomer, there’s no denying this corner of southeastern Pennsylvania, with its deep sense of place, is special indeed.
Maybe it’s our rich history – and the way local historical groups and societies continue to tell our stories and preserve our artifacts. These touchstones remind us of past generations.
Through our contributions – in work, rest and refreshment, we’re helping to grow new stories and provide a starting place for the history we create for future generations.
Maybe it’s part of recent nationwide initiatives to reclaim and repurpose older buildings – using their architecture, building materials, and lines to craft new spaces from former factories, mills, and manufacturing plants, converting them to 21stcentury living spaces.
Just about every borough and many townships throughout Upper Bucks have and maintain a historical society. These buildings, their contents, and the guides who curate them are resources to take a trip back in time and learn about those who lived, worked, and raised families in the communities we now call home.
The Shelly School, also known as The Little Red School House, is a one-room, brick building set between Richlandtown and Quakertown boroughs. For decades The Shelly School has been a showcase for 19th and early 20th-century learning and education and a time capsule to a bygone era.
One-room schoolhouses have profound stories to share. When used as museums, they have much to teach us about the daily lives of those who’ve gone before us – and a way for us to contribute to our local legacies.

Unifying, Cultural Collaboration
When we find ways to collaborate, our culture expands. We intertwine new stories – our stories – into the collective.
Hard work and perseverance have been longstanding hallmarks of the culture we enjoy in Upper Bucks County. From our region’s early settlers to those who took up the baton from generation to generation to ensure our towns and rural areas continued to survive and thrive.
Tradition matters. So does the flexibility to embrace fresh ideas and people to grow communities, create unity and bind them together. From the early German, Dutch and Swedish settlers who came and called Upper Bucks home in the early 1600s to newer newcomers who find their way here – we all have something to contribute and share.
Our communal culture is marked by compassion. By taking care of one another, from food pantries and shelter services to creating safe spaces like Free Fall Action Park in Quakertown and Got Strings? Youth Orchestra in Perkasie, we nurture new cultural experiences for our young people.
Preserving the rural character, wildlife, and ecosystems in our Upper Bucks home is among The Tinicum Conservancy’s mission. The Erwinna-
based organization is dedicated to land and water protection to preserve natural resources in Upper Bucks communities. These initiatives don’t continue without cultural efforts, a unified purpose, and active collaboration.
Collaboration extends to our towns’ fierce mission of preserving and sharing our cultural sites and heritage. They’re worth preserving and visiting often.
Take a self-guided driving tour and discover Upper Bucks County’s covered bridges. Then, check out Liberty Hall in Quakertown Borough, where the Liberty Hall rested en route from Philadelphia to Allentown for safekeeping during the American Revolution.
Visit Hilltown Township and tour Pearl S. Buck’s home and property. Learn about this Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and adoption advocate of Amerasian children from the Vietnam War.
We bring different experiences to the table because of – not despite – being different. Finding common ground paves the way for us to collaborate and forge the next chapters in our region’s cultural story. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org

Wellness
H ealthy Growth
Assessing the health and wellbeing needs of those who live and work in Upper Bucks County and responding to them will bring renewed focus and new services to the region. This awareness will change how we’re served.
Over the past few years, health care systems and networks in Upper Buck County have been focused on growth. They recognize the region is changing in a variety of ways. From aging residents to incoming new families to the needs of each stage in our lives shift and change as we move through them – from birth, youth, young adulthood, marriage, family, middle age, and beyond.
Assessing those needs and responding to them will bring new services this year and choices of where and how we’re served.
Upper Bucks County has three major health networks with easy access to residents, with specialty services added.
Grand View Health in Sellersville, Lehigh Valley Health Network in Richland Township, and St. Luke’s University Health Network Upper Bucks Campus in Milford Township offer choices for everything from routine care to emergency services and everything in between.
Recognizing the needs of the communities they ser ve – and responding to those needs – has spurred capital investment and campus expansions at both Grand View and St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus. Both health networks will open expanded ser vices and facilities this year.
Grand View, which recently signed a fiveyear cooperation extension agreement with Penn Medicine, is expanding. Grand View will offer Intensive Care and Progressive Care Unit services, state-of-the-art patient room technology, and hightech air circulation systems in its new wing.
Aligned with Temple University, St. Luke’s is the only medical school located in the Greater Lehigh Valley. The roughly $72 million investment by St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus in Milford Township doubles the facility’s size. The expansion adds cancer care and radiation treatment services to the area, along with palliative care, expanded obstetric services, birthing, and a neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) unit.
Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Health Center in Richland Township continues to offer walk-in services as well as primary, specialty, express care, blood testing, and diagnostic testing, including X-ray and ultrasound services at its Route 309 and Pumping Station Road location. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org
The focus of health care hasn’t changed all that much since Grand View Health opened in 1913 in a Sellersville farmhouse. Then as now, orthopedics, women’s and children’s care, and cancer care treatment were foundational to the opening of the first hospital in Upper Bucks.

Business and Industry Collaboration
G rowing Local
Homegrown talent is hard to beat. That could mean fourth- or fifthgeneration family farms developing new markets, selling directly to consumers at farmers’ markets, or building relationships with local restaurateurs.
Growing local can mean crafted continuity by training the next generation of skilled employees for key positions, management, and, ultimately, business ownership.
Our proximity to major highway arteries –for transportation access and distribution, highquality school districts attractive to young and growing families, as well as area colleges, universities, and technical school training, positions us as an economic powerhouse.
As a stubbornly persistent workforce shortage continues to plague our business and industry leaders, it’s vital to grow collaborations for prospective talent. Make your workforce homegrown.
One of the ways we collaborate – with teams, other businesses, vendors, and our communities – is by listening. For retail business owners, that could mean shifting how a product is sold because of post-pandemic consumer buying behaviors and new habits. For service companies – like professional, skilled trades and health and wellness practices, it could mean taking a look at subtle shifts and
emerging trends. For example, what changes are in demand in the B2C (business to consumer) and B2B (business to business) market spaces? As these needs evolve and change, how can business owners better meet them?
By listening, planning, and taking action, businesses can meet customer demand by recognizing the need for insightful – and meaningful – change. Sometimes those insights are best discovered through collaborative partnerships outside the organization. Collaborative workforce initiatives can bridge the divide between what we think the industry and workplace need – and what they truly want and need from the next generation.
Often a great place to start is by going to the source. Educators, business owners, managers, and community leaders can collaborate. At UBCC, Career Pathways is one such initiative. Career Pathways is building meaningful connections and creative workforce conduits. Internships, shadowing opportunities, and speaker events help everyone grow.
“Check with the Chamber” is another initiative built on supporting members’ products and services by connecting buyers and sellers of goods and services. So the next time you need anything: from a florist to financial advice, professional services like doctors, attorneys, and accountants to travel, photography, and catering, make a Check with the Chamber partner your first contact.

You might think warehouse apartment lofts are only found in big city downtowns. Think again. Quakertown and Perkasie repurposed vintage mills and have a refurbished lease on life as luxury apartment dwelling places. These progressive conversions flipped what were formerly eyesores into vibrant living spaces.

Education and Workforce Collaboration
C ollaborative Education
To “pull focus” is a film industry term. It means changing the focus from one distinct image – or “focal plane” – and shift to another.
Expanding educational focus is a way to serve students. Through strong collaborations, we prepare our young people to become – in specific and specialized ways – our next visionaries, business leaders, and innovators.
One of the ways we can “pull focus” is to recognize and work to accommodate the changing environment in which we learn and live.
Our young people are living in an unprecedented era. As a result, a staggering amount of information is available – and accessible – at their fingertips, more than any previous generation.
The need to collaborate is more vital than at any other time in our shared history. We do that by recognizing and becoming active and authentically engaged in partnerships between educators, business leaders, trade organizations, colleges and universities.
Harnessing the potential of our educational systems through collaborations meant to benefit our students offers exciting opportunities.
Collaboration grows us – and our young people – in exponential ways.
Upper Bucks County schools offer a variety of career and post-graduation exploration programs. Quakertown Community School District offers several Career Pathways: an exploration of five academic pathway tracks, a student in the workplace study, field study placement, or UBCTS Pathways Alignment. Pennridge School District’s Pathways college and career exploration gives students a taste of college life, workforce experiences through job shadowing and exploring military service. Palisades School District’s Career Pathway Programs offer over eight different approaches to content areas meant to best meet student interests and choices.
The Upper Bucks County Technical School Career Internship Program gives students reallife work experiences to guide their choices and future success.
From becoming a small business owner or working in the trades as a skilled employee to becoming an entrepreneur or pursuing a college or university degree – it takes our different and diverse talents, aptitudes, and skills to create thriving, selfsustaining communities. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org
Scientific American reported the human brain can hold 2.5 million gigabytes of data or information. To put that staggering amount into perspective, a single byte represents a single unit of measure used by a computer system. For example, a typed letter L represents one byte of computer data.

U nified, Collaborative an d Growing UBCC
At Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce, our unified forward purpose – to support the entrepreneurial spirit – is fueled by you. That’s the beating heart of our mission.
We support entrepreneurs by engaging with educators and businesses to keep our communities healthy, thriving, inventive, and moving forward. In addition, we develop and execute ribbon cuttings and networking events throughout the year to bring people together – to introduce newcomers to longstanding members of our business communities.
We collaborate with agencies, education, and businesses to keep a pipeline of workforce talent flowing. In addition, we provide meaningful opportunities for engagement as a conduit for legislators, business members, educators, and communities.
Our annual Golf Classic Outing, Clay Shoot, and Foodie are regular events aimed at fostering community through occasions to come together.
After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, Foodie is back.
With strong attendance in 2022 and more than 300 patrons, Foodie visitors had a chance to support
this premiere event, sample restaurants new to the area, and enjoy long-standing favorites for food and drink.
This muchanticipated highlight event checks all the boxes for our mission. Foodie is a place to meet people and make business introductions. It’s a place to gather together to celebrate what makes our region unique – and tasty – and to promote the entrepreneurial spirit.
As much as $5,000 annually is donated to support students attending Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW).
Each year proceeds from Foodie go toward funding PFEW camp scholarships for high school juniors and seniors during an intensive week experience grounded by entrepreneurship. For more go to our website @ www.ubcc.org
Did you know our publication’s title focused is Latin for hearth?
Outdoor fire tables at Trolley Barn Public Market provide a chance for patrons to gather with old friends around locally crafted spirits and great food – and to make new friends, too.
