Whether you are enrolled in the University of British Columbia’s Master of Science or PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences program, or are working towards a combined Master of Physical Therapy/PhD, you’ll be equipped with the tools and knowledge you need to help advance the rapidly-changing field of rehabilitation sciences.

PhD in Rehab Sciences The PhD program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing advanced independent research study and original investigation in Rehabilitation Sciences at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level. Students will conduct significant and original research that will contribute to the body of evidencebased rehabilitation practice.

MSc in Rehab Sciences The MSc program will equip students with the skills and knowledge to conduct research independently and in collaboration with other scientists. Students will investigate an area of research relevant to rehabilitation through critical analysis of problems related to basic sciences, clinical practice, or to development of theory.

run by the University of British Columbia’s Department of Occupational Sciences and Occupational Therapy (OSOT) and the Department of Physical Therapy (PT), the program offers students a unique opportunity to work with a wide range of world-class researchers, many with international connections who pursue discovery that aims to impact positively on people living with chronic health conditions.

60 graduate students from a broad range of backgrounds, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, recreation therapy, social sciences, human kinetics, and engineering, have graduated from our program.

members have been honored with Faculty of Medicine awards for excellence in mentoring, teaching and research, and have an excellent record of scholarly productivity, receiving funding from provincial and national research granting agencies.

The Rehabilitation Sciences program also offers a combined dual degree MPT/PhD program for students with an interest in integrated clinical and research training relevant to physical therapy. Many of our students have authored numerous peer-reviewed journal publications and won various scholarships and awards, including the UBC Killam Research Prize, and the prestigious Vanier Scholarship, the premier health sciences PhD scholarship in Canada. Our students have also been very successful in obtaining support for their training from external funding agencies, such as CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, Heart and Stroke Foundation Canada, the Child and Family Research Institute, the Arthritis Society, and many more.
