UAW Local 3520 Celebrate Labor Day
The rain didn’t stop UAW Local 3520 workers from celebrating their rights gained from the labor movement.
On September 5th , UAW/Freightliner & Western Star Union Members and their families marched behind our Union Made Ride of Pride trucks along with 19 other local labor Unions and organizations. It’s the first time they’ve had a parade since 2019.
Labor Day is a known holiday across the United States. Taking place on the first Monday every September, it is considered an annual celebration of American workers’ economic and social achievements. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union and is deeply rooted in the fabric of American workers today.
UAW Local 3520 Family Day
It takes a lot of people behind the scenes to make an event like this happen. Says Corey Hill UAW Local 3520 President, “I want to give a big thank you to Sally Miller Rogers and the group from The Horse Protection Society, Robert Osborne, Ron Rippy and the UAW Veterans Committee for the great barbecue and all the Rolling Thunder volunteers that came to serve the food. To Tony and Stacy Groll, and Jamie Fullen for running the check in process. To Annette and Marvin Bey at the Italian Ice Stand, Joe Bello with Mr. Cone Ice Cream and our Vice President, Jon Greene, for helping facilitate the needs that came up throughout the day. Thanks for the bands Divided by Four and Carol’s Posse. A shout out to Wideman’s Family Catering for the great chicken. Thanks to David McDaniel for being the DJ at the event during changeovers and during breaks
Here’s to Union Families
The day was packed full of things to do and eat. The Walking Tacos, Needle in a Haystack, taking pictures with rescued horses from The Horse Protection Society of North Carolina and the decorating of the burlap sacks was a sure hit. The overwhelming response of the event let us know we are on the right track to making family day bigger and better creating lasting memories with our Union Family and reuniting with our retirees like Terry Guffey. “We had our two sons and four of six grandkids with us. We all had a great time. Everything was perfect, the food, especially the chicken, games and entertainment. It was a good time for fellowship with my brothers and sisters, some I haven’t seen since I retired. Thanks to all who helped put this on.”
We look forward to seeing you again net year. Here’s to Union Families getting together.

UAW Local 3520 Veterans Committee has spearheaded a project at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. “The burial cart at the cemetery was in rough shape,” states Robert Osborne. The roughly painted black box is used to transport the Veterans’ casket to their final resting place. The group decided that they wanted the Veterans to be laid to rest with honor for the country they served. They have put in countless hours making this project a reality from prepping the cart to getting the wrap designed to give this black box a look of American Pride. On September 21st, there was a small ceremony at the cemetery for the unveiling of this true work of art.
Phase one is complete and phase two is under way. More money is needed to replace the seats in the cart and to give the front some “American Pride”. UAW Local 3520 Veterans Committee is doing a change drive to help finish this heartfelt project that will mean so much to so many families.
The UAW Local 3520 Veterans Committee will be holding a “Change for Change” Fundraiser every Friday for the month of October in the cafeteria. They will also be visiting different areas during lunch breaks. Beverly Cross will be assisting on second shift .The spare change collected will be used to complete phase two of the VA Cemetery’s burial cart to give our Veterans the send off they deserve.
UAW Local 3520 Community Service Committee School Supply Drive Packed a Punch
It started out as a regular school supply drive with boxes distributed throughout the plant and flyers posted on Facebook and in the plant.
With the help of Beverly Cross and the 2nd shift team members at Freightliner, before they knew it hundreds of school supplies would fill the conference table at the local Union Hall.
While researching what organizations were in need of school supplies, the committee was shocked by the need of so many organizations that were not getting the donations that they normally receive. It was brought to the attention of Stacey Groll, Community Service Chair, that she could obtain pallets of school supplies at a cost from a local wholesale store in Salisbury, Crazy David’s Discount and Variety Store. The Committee exhausted their funds and asked the membership to also purchase one, and with the efforts of Beverly, they were able to purchase four pallets of school supplies that were distributed to United Way, Esther House and Community in Schools.
Stacey Groll and Beverly Cross Delivered thousands of items to Communities in schools. United Way and the Esther House meet with Stacey Groll to pick up their pallets at Crazy David’s Discount Variety containing thousands back to school supplies.

UAW LOCAL 3520 VETERANS COMMITTEE GIVES HONOR & RESPECT FOR OUR VETERANS ON THEIR LAST RIDE BEFORE THEY ARE LAID TO REST
From The President’s Desk:
Brothers and Sisters
I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who helped in making this year’s Family Day a success. After changing the date due to weather, we was blessed with an amazing day. We hope you and your family enjoyed your day here. As we move forward, I want to remind members that couldn’t attend that day that we still have membership shirts here at the local for you to pick up. Coming up this month in October we will be gathering with our families once again on October the 29th for an old fashioned trunk or treat. More details of this event and all that will be taking place will be posted on all Union boards and UAW Local 3520 Facebook site. We need Volunteers. There are several ways you can help; one is just by bringing in a bag of candy or volunteering to decorate a trunk. If you're interested in helping you can give me a call or text (704) 340 8032. These events are ways to give back and bring together our members and their families. Please take advantage of what our Union membership has to offer. Coming together outside of the workplace is an important part of our future. As we enter 2023, we will start setting the stage for our 2024 contact negotiations. We must become more aware of what this means to our families and our future. Events at the local Union Hall is where we build our strongest Solidarity. Where we ask questions and build relationships. As this year start to come to an end in the next few months, we need to pay more attention to each other, events, and meetings. We need to plan to attend training classes that will be offered and be prepared to fight for what we and our families deserve. Together we win Divided we beg.
From The Vice President’s Desk:
The Local 3520 is always looking for more members who want to get involved. It starts by helping with standing committees or simply attending a monthly membership meeting. Those things are done on the volunteer basis . However you can be written out of work excused to do so.
And that's where the spark is fired . Simply volunteering your time gains you know knowledge which will open up more doors. We need more people to do this so they will be in position when it comes time for election and they can run for the key roles such as President, Vice President, Shop Chair, District Rep, District Alternates just to name of few. We got a lot of people that are running for these positions at election times that have no idea what they're running for and then they usually lose and disappear when they should have been involved before and after the fact .
On another note , members voice negative impressions about their leaders and representatives. The way to change that is to challenge them. Complacency is easy when there's no competition. With a membership of nearly 2,000 no one should win by acclamation . There's nothing wrong with a little healthy competition

Page 9 Unity News
To ensure the trunks do not run out of candy, the standing committees are doing a candy drive inside the plant until October 24th. In order to make it easy for you to donate, we have distributed black barrels in break rooms and in the cafeteria.
**** Please Do Not Put Trash in These Barrels****
We value feedback from our members, we take the information and see if we can improve the issue.
Feedback of previous fundraisers were that a lot of people don’t go to the cafeteria or they don’t have time to get to the in plant office and back from break on time. So, this is a solution that we would like to do a trial run on. If the barrels are successful, we will continue to use them for future fundraising donations to make it convenient for you to donate.
