STORY At the end of 2014 the 3 architectural firms MASSarchitects (Massimo Pignanelli, Hasselt), DAR architects (Joris Diliën, Houthalen) and SAQ architects (Frederik Vaes, Brussels) decided to unite their complementary creativity and experiences and to work together as one firm. Today this association is a fact. Michel Janssens was attracted to shape the association and will join us as CFO to set the lines of ‘UAU’collectiv.

The new offices are located at the Blauwe Boulevard in Hasselt. In total 15 architects will be working there. The three architectural associations have a long experience in different domains, and join forces in order to be able to respond to clients’ demands more quickly and in a customised manner, as well as to be able to cope with larger projects and to raise the general quality to an even higher level.

Massimo Pignanelli is strongly anchored in Hasselt. Various projects by his hand are known in the city centre of Hasselt. Massimo has always focused on wide-ranging design disciplines, where various levels are addressed and internal-external feedback is indispensable. In this way he has already created numerous villas, catering, loft and retail projects and interiors with an iconic serene look, inside and outside Limburg. The intention is to further explore this diversity within the new collective.

The merger of both these dynamics, combined with Joris Diliën’s years of expertise and knowledge, makes the ‘UAU’collectiv a new and adept partner in Limburg’s architectural world. Joris shaped numerous large-scale residential and retail projects in an urban context in a cooperation with leading partners in terms of project development. One of his most recent projects are the buildings on the outer ring road of Hasselt, where Krëfel is located.

Frederik Vaes is an internationally oriented architect, who has proven himself through the Bikini Berlin project. The last couple of years Frederik has been able to focus on various leisure and retail projects in capital cities such as London, New York and Brussels. His strategic vision and specialised experience provide the new collective with an extra dimension.

The fourth ‘leg’ in the association is Michel Janssens, trained in marketing and accountancy. For 15 years he has worked for renowned multinationals in sales positions. In 2010 he focussed on the guidance of liberal professions, on a financial as well as a corporate level. Michel forms the backbone of the new collective and will provide the necessary peace and quiet within the continuous stream of creative processes.

ABOUT ABOUT Romance, transl. ENG: ‘wow’ Etymology: Hebrew, ‘vav’ ‘world of wonders’, exclamation of surprise ‘UAU’-WORLD OF WONDERS The name of the new association is ‘UAU’collectiv, pronounced as ‘WOW’. It has a Romance origin, and is an exclamation of surprise. UAU is a palindrome that radiates power; it indicates the power & passion that the different disciplines bring together in 1 collective. The three architectural associations have a long experience in different domains, and join forces in order to be able to respond to clients’ demands more quickly and in a customised manner, as well as to be able to cope with larger projects and to raise the general quality to an even higher level. EXPANSION AND DEVELOPMENT “For us the new collective has to become a creative platform and thinktank. We want to make flexible buildings for government, companies as well as private individuals. Commercial projects deserve an upgrade as well. A building has to be strong and radiate power. The collective allows us to work in a solid organisation, where everyone receives recognition, freedom and respect, and can fully develop. The purpose is complementarity: each architect will have the same approach and contact with his clients as before. For them, little will change. But because of the expansion we can work with more corporate discipline, complement and strengthen each other, so that the end result, of any project, be it big or small, will only get better.”

The new office is located on the Kempische Kaai, number 7, on the top two floors; an inspiring environment, with views over the channel up to the Nijverheidskaai. The reception of clients and contacts will happen in an original manner, where everyone will immediately feel ‘at home’. (building design by Lens°Ass architecten)

Seventies revival Architecture isn’t just about the architect, it’s also about the client. When architect and client come together in one person, renowned architect Albert Vanleysen, a fascinating story arises to which after 40 years of residence a sequel is being written. The house is located in a residential area near Hasselt and has charmed its new occupants with its specific seventies style. It contained the challenge to realise the wishes of the new owners without harming the house in the process. With a minimum of procedures a major change was brought about.

The project area is located in the centre of Lummen and is part of an inner area that can be reached from various angles. When drawing up the plan for this core-strengthening project of 39 residential units, an optimal way was sought to interweave the new developments with the existing urban fabric, starting from the various points of departure that the site provided. An open space is introduced on the terrain and by the implantation of various building blocks following the natural slope of the terrain not only a playful variation in the heights of the cornices is created, but additionally the privacy of the various inhabitants is respected and a pleasant living environment is created. Within this concept of integration a light colour setting is chosen in which the green emerges.

SHARK HOUSE

This terraced house in the centre of Hasselt appeals to passers-by because of its appearance. The glass façade reflects its environment without being overwhelmingly present in the street scene. A silver pattern is placed over the entire surface of the glass façade that ensures that the entering light is filtered. Internally an oasis of tranquillity is created, yet with a very large interaction with the city as well. The traditional residential programme for a family with two children has been interpreted anything but classically. A void with a specific shape connects all levels and attracts added attention by an impressive light fitting. In addition, overhead light seeps to all areas in the house. Hidden behind the glass façade a garage and practice area are located on the ground floor with next to them a swimming pool that appeals to the imagination. The replica of the shark’s mouth enhances the artistic atmosphere that is emphasised by the materialisation of green mosaic and warm walnut. We can speak of an overall concept that is continued on all levels. On the first floor the see-through property of the building becomes fully apparent.

16

One lives between the bustle of the city on the one hand and the green of the roof terrace on the other hand. The asymmetrical shape of the space returns in the island that also functions as a bar. The floor was executed in basalt and the kitchen is characterised by the application of the distinctive natural stone forest brown.

The master bedroom with dressing is located on the third floor. Here the oasis of tranquillity reaches a peak in the bathroom unit. Bathing among a wilderness of bamboo with city views. Finally the roof level encourages exclusive parties on sultry summer evenings.

Geel, Belgium Completed 2015

The growing demand for and interest in new forms of living together inspired a Belgian entrepreneurial duo to develop the product Skilpod. A Skilpod is a mobile and modular housing construction that attaches great importance to its energetic properties but that is also always searching for progressive and diverse designs. By means of modular architecture Skilpod searches for a combination of flexibility and energy efficiency. The module is completely built and finished in the Skilpod-studio and subsequently transported and placed on the site. As a result the Skilpod is also moveable to a new location at a later time. The housing constructions are built out of a timber frame structure of CLT, Cross Laminated Timber, and fully isolated with a layer of rock wool insulation. In a Skilpod all techniques can be integrated that are used in a traditional house or office. Application of solar panels, heat pumps, ventilation systems, home automation systems etc. is possible, tailored to the user requirements.

The modules can be viewed as an additional space and therefore their interpretation is very broad. Apart from an office or garden room the living or accommodation systems offer interesting possibilities within a particular demand for care. Following this philosophy of care the model #48 Energy PLUS was developed. The goal of this module of 48m² is being leased to single, young starters and elderly persons for whom traditional houses are too big. Alternatively there is also the possibility to place these modules as an extension of an existing house in the garden in order to provide a semi-autonomous unit for non-selfsufficient elderly, disabled young adults,... . In addition to the standard modules, finally, the possibility also exists to opt for custom work.

NELISSEN

In cooperation with Architectengroep PSK Location Status

Lanaken, Belgium Ongoing

Steenfabrieken Nelissen comprise a stone factory with adjacent quarry in operation since 1921. In order to remain competitive the products not only have to be able to be displayed professionally, there also has to be the possibility to give demonstrations on the processing of these products. Therefore additional space for presentation is indispensable. A new complex will have to be developed that wants to be an example of innovation of the new technologies that bricks offer, where the own products will already be able to be admired from the outside. The complex has to be a business card of the company with international allure. To this end it was opted to place three U-shaped instalments slanted on top of each other, with the outdoor and indoor area melting together, as it were. Open and closed areas will alternate in the building, taking into account the functionalities that have to be provided: offices, showroom, storage (partly underground), meeting infrastructure, demo areas, ...

PEPPE’S

Genk, Belgium Completed 2015

In the centre of Genk a new culinary concept was launched in the autumn of 2015. Peppe Giacomazza, chef of the Italian top restaurant La Botte and familiar face of TV channel Njam!, has given his name to Peppe’s, a business that is a shop, caterer and bistro all at the same time. It’s the place where everything happens. Where the entire family gets together, talks to each other and where joys and sorrows are shared. On the one hand the business consists of a food store, where ingredients of the Sicilian kitchen can be found. In addition it is possible to taste a large assortment of Italian delicacies on site. Behind the transparent kitchen, where you can see the cooks behind glass with undulating relief, the dining area is located as the endpoint of the business. It is by centralising the kitchen that every area, but consequently also every guest, is always in touch with what is happening in the business. They are part of the whole. It is a connecting element.

31

The culinary concept was translated in a casual and playful interior architecture. The crude basic look of concrete and industrial techniques was upgraded with elements of copper, fresh colours and elements in wood. The long wall painted with black chalk paint operates as an eye catcher by means of the fresh chalk drawings and the recesses in colourful tiles. The long bar in Bianco Carrera marble leads the visitors from the food store to the cosy bistro at the back of the property. Colour accents were added there with the wooden chairs with red, yellow, green, blue, white and black metal frames.

Clear lines were drawn by using different materials in the floors and the walls for each area and by shifting the format - at the front and central area concrete floors and tiled walls and at the back tiled floors and concrete walls. This way the transition between bar, kitchen and dining area is realised fluently. It creates different atmospheres that stimulate the client to investigate and to experience every part differently.

Restaurant La Botte in Genk got an increasingly larger attendance, especially after its award of best Italian restaurant in Belgium (GaulMilau, 2008), and there was an urgent need for a new renovation. For this refurbishment a unique collaboration was formed between architect, carpenter and stonemason. The kitchen is interpreted as one clear line from the cold to the warm kitchen. The sleek counter was fully executed in Emperador and ensures that from now on meals can be cooked in the dining hall in front of the public. Wood and natural stone are the base of the masterly design and were executed by craftsmen. Passion, creativity and innovation meet in a design where both tradition and innovation play a central role.

ELDERLY HOME In cooperation with Architectengroep PSK Location Status

Riemst, Belgium Ongoing

The requested program in the expansion of the project area residential care facility Eyckendael in Riemst is diverse. Each function group has its own needs concerning surface, outdoor space, internal relations and so on. The aim was one cohesive spatial and functional whole which could be approached from all sides. The new functions of the expansion of the rest home are concentrated around a square courtyard. The building is folded around it, like a sort of buffer between the public environment and the private outdoor space, so that a familiar environment is created for the residents. From the inside a double orientation is created: towards the heart, the enclosed courtyard, and towards the green environment of the existing context. A continuous circulation around the courtyard ensures an optimal connection with the existing rest home.

B-sure managed to secure a prime location at the Blauwe Boulevard in Hasselt for its new home base. The inspiration for the design of their new office was aptly sought in the boat theme. The rounded shapes ensure that the customers can be received in a friendly atmosphere. Contact with water is tangible in all areas and stimulates the high-quality services. The colour scheme black/white refers to the harbour atmosphere and creates various welcoming atmospheres. The design was continued into the publicity of the financial service providers. At the square Merit Capital gets a face by means of three-dimensional letters on a pedestal and the reference B-sure is also elegantly lit on the wall.

EXPO MILANO Location Status

Milan, Italy Expo 2015

The graduation project of two colleagues was worked out into an agricultural concept that was presented at the World Expo in Milan in the autumn of 2015. The expo’s theme was ‘feeding the planet, energy for life’, and at UAU collectiv this was translated into an exploration of the high population growth in cities and the way supplying food is dealt with. The research resulted in a concept where churches are deployed for the cultivation of vegetables such as lettuce, chicory, radishes and mushrooms, but the cultivation of insects is feasible here as well. In this way the monumental buildings, that are dealing with overcapacity and that are sometimes even completely empty, get a new, socially relevant function. In other words, horticulture is being practised in a contemporary fashion and this in combination with an additional, reinforcing function. Thus hybridisation or mixing 2 functions leads to a better result for all parties concerned. The church in service of the community - ORA ET GUSTA: pray and taste, originating from ORA ET LABORA: pray and work.

SWINDON

International/Masterplan

Location Swindon, Great Britain Status Ongoing

In the 1970s, Swindon was the leading town in the South West for sports and leisure thanks to the opening of the Oasis Leisure Centre. However, nowadays the existing buildings and installation of the open space around it are not what people might expect for a destination area to spend their free time after a long day of working. In order to improve the quality of that open space, ´UAU´ collectiv integrates a diversified program in a compact building with a minimal amount of floors. A curving façade embracing the surroundings gives character and brings atmosphere to the site. Outdoor space becomes a chamber of green oasis or a chamber for outdoor sports. By reducing the size of the building, more space can be used for quality outdoor green. According to the functional program of the site, the brief is to provide an indoor ski facility with adjacent leisure, retail, food and beverage units, a music/exhibition arena with the minimum of 5000 seats, a hotel, outdoor community sport facilities, and an associated parking. All of that accompanied by refurbishment and extension of the existing Oasis Leisure Centre.
