STORY At the end of 2014 the 3 architectural firms MASSarchitects (Massimo Pignanelli, Hasselt), DAR architects (Joris Diliën, Houthalen) and SAQ architects (Frederik Vaes, Brussels) decided to unite their complementary creativity and experiences and to work together as one firm. Today this association is a fact. Michel Janssens was attracted to shape the association and will join us as CFO to set the lines of ‘UAU’collectiv.

The new offices are located at the Blauwe Boulevard in Hasselt. In total 15 architects will be working there. The three architectural associations have a long experience in different domains, and join forces in order to be able to respond to clients’ demands more quickly and in a customised manner, as well as to be able to cope with larger projects and to raise the general quality to an even higher level.

Massimo Pignanelli is strongly anchored in Hasselt. Various projects by his hand are known in the city centre of Hasselt. Massimo has always focused on wide-ranging design disciplines, where various levels are addressed and internal-external feedback is indispensable. In this way he has already created numerous villas, catering, loft and retail projects and interiors with an iconic serene look, inside and outside Limburg. The intention is to further explore this diversity within the new collective.

The merger of both these dynamics, combined with Joris Diliën’s years of expertise and knowledge, makes the ‘UAU’collectiv a new and adept partner in Limburg’s architectural world. Joris shaped numerous large-scale residential and retail projects in an urban context in a cooperation with leading partners in terms of project development. One of his most recent projects are the buildings on the outer ring road of Hasselt, where Krëfel is located.

Frederik Vaes is an internationally oriented architect, who has proven himself through the Bikini Berlin project. The last couple of years Frederik has been able to focus on various leisure and retail projects in capital cities such as London, New York and Brussels. His strategic vision and specialised experience provide the new collective with an extra dimension.

The fourth ‘leg’ in the association is Michel Janssens, trained in marketing and accountancy. For 15 years he has worked for renowned multinationals in sales positions. In 2010 he focussed on the guidance of liberal professions, on a financial as well as a corporate level. Michel forms the backbone of the new collective and will provide the necessary peace and quiet within the continuous stream of creative processes.

ABOUT “Because of the expansion we can work with more corporate discipline, complement and strengthen each other, so that the end result, of any project, be it big or small, will only get better.”

ABOUT Romance, transl. ENG: ‘wow’ Etymology: Hebrew, ‘vav’ ‘world of wonders’, exclamation of surprise

“A building has to be strong and radiate power.” (building design by Lens°Ass architecten)

‘UAU’-WORLD OF WONDERS The name of the new association is ‘UAU’collectiv, pronounced as ‘WOW’. It has a Romance origin, and is an exclamation of surprise. UAU is a palindrome that radiates power; it indicates the power & passion that the different disciplines bring together in 1 collective. The three architectural associations have a long experience in different domains, and join forces in order to be able to respond to clients’ demands more quickly and in a customised manner, as well as to be able to cope with larger projects and to raise the general quality to an even higher level. EXPANSION AND DEVELOPMENT “For us the new collective has to become a creative platform and thinktank. We want to make flexible buildings for government, companies as well as private individuals. Commercial projects deserve an upgrade as well. A building has to be strong and radiate power. The collective allows us to work in a solid organisation, where everyone receives recognition, freedom and respect, and can fully develop. The purpose is complementarity: each architect will have the same approach and contact with his clients as before. For them, little will change. But because of the expansion we can work with more corporate discipline, complement and strengthen each other, so that the end result, of any project, be it big or small, will only get better.”

The new offices are located at the Blauwe Boulevard in Hasselt. In total 15 architects will be working there.

Master Planning

BELAIR

Location Status

Brussels, Belgium Phase 1 realised

The RAC site, the former National Administrative Centre looking over downtown Brussels, has been left vacant since 2003. For this Modernistic complex from the 50’s situated in the heart of the city, UAU collectiv, previous called SAQ, is asked to develop a master plan that restores the site’s identity and in so doing regains a significant role in Brussels. By an important multifunctional program, the reactivation of existing buildings, plazas and a composition of newly built volumes. The new proposal is a total concept that has the ambition to anchor the complex back in the surrounding urban tissue. This masterplan has been turned in to architectiral planning, but when the financial crisis hit the European market, the project stopped. Fase 1, the renovation of the existing modernist building has been realised. UAU collectiv, previous called SAQ, designed the “cinematographic facade”. The old facade has been replaced by the same typologie of frames, but the windows are a new composition of all different types of standard sunprotected glasing. This facade is in total more then 500m long, and will be visible from different angles in the city and becomes the new horizon in the city. The composition of different glasstypes is inspired by DNA chains, where every single proteïne has it’s own colorcode. From the inside you can say that every single office space has it’s unique colorcode. Over the total length of the facade it starts with the blue color of the financial tower turning in to green and ends it total transparency.

The new facade will incorporate it’s surroundings. When you stand close to the facade the sky will be reflected, depending on the weather conditions. But what makes this facade really interesting is that looking from a distance the surrounded buildings will be reflected, where the colordiffirentiation articulates some details from the reflected building. Walking trew an alley at the backside of the building the colorscheme will also be projected on the pedestrian road by the sun.

HOUSE G

Location Status

Hasselt,Belgium Completed 2015

This L-shaped ground floor house is from the inside maximally oriented to the garden area and the landscape behind it. The L-shape emerged out of a desire for a broad view on and close contact with the garden, without affecting the privacy of the residents and the adjacent plots. Because of its implantation the house creates a buffer to the neighbour at the right-hand side, but preserves the feeling of openness for the residents. The inside of the L-shape is fully glassed and provided with an awning in such a way that the house seamlessly continues in the garden area that is embraced by the two legs of the L-shape. In this area a swimming pool can be found as well, which through a partly enclosed patio connects to the living and sports areas of the house. The night area is located in the zone parallel with the street. By working with glass walls this part of the house has a view on the garden as well. Photo

In order to preserve the privacy on the street side, the faรงade is provided with a second skin. Between the faรงade and this second skin a small green patio is laid that provides the necessary seclusion for a more intimate atmosphere in the night area. The second skin, however, also contains the perforations necessary to exercises sufficient social control on the street side. The ground floor nature of the house is an important durable aspect, but this can additionally be found in the chosen construction method as well. The openness of areas and structure allows for a functional adaptability in time.

Retail / Leisure

Location Status

Beringen, Belgium Completed

BE-Mine is a formal coalmine site in the city of Beringen. The large scale of industrial heritage sets the mood of the area and is a well-known icon for Beringen. The master plan had some immense challenges to integrate a contemporary leisure and retail park with a historical industrial site in which one intensifies the other like symbiosis. Together with our specialised team of retail and leisure experts we were able to create a challenging design where an architecturally formed space gives an extra dimension to the inside function. At the same time the outside retail park is a humble but at the same time present building with a great deal of detailing.

HASSALINK

Hasselt, Belgium Under construction

The design for the new city hall in Hasselt aims to bring together the current administrative services in one location and in this way to organise the service smoothly and in an approachable manner for the citizen. This new city hall will be erected on the site of the old Gendarme barracks on the Guffenslaan. The building plans see to a renovation of the old Gendarme barracks with an energy-efficient new building. The accessibility of the central square is emphasised as the heart of HASSalink, which is also reflected in the mirrored wall of the new building. The new city hall has a link to the commercial centre as well as to the Groene Boulevard, the hospital and the surrounding school communities. At the same time the new city hall has to be a real ‘house’ for its visitors. We aspire a warm and attractive building where everyone will really feel at home. Model of the new city hall design

Waiting room

Adegem, Belgium Completed 2014

For the expansion of the veterinary centre Vets & Co the architectural goal was to respect the design philosophy and modernist look of the existing building and continue them in the new section. The outdoor patio provides daylight for both the practice and the waiting area and strengthens the connection with the existing building. The whole is carried by seemingly floating columns at the front. The new segment is constructed in bricks and painted in the same colour as the existing volume (white), combined with structural glass panes as showcase and horizontal (floorceiling) bands in black steel.

LOFT S

Location

Knokke, Belgium

Status Completed 2015

The existing apartment with sea view was internally fully opened for a maximum spatial experience and see-through effect. Starting point for this compact design was creating an open loft feeling by smoothing away the secondary functions. This way the kitchen is hidden behind a folding door and a second sleeping area is integrated in a wall closet. In the continuous area, zones are identified by working with contrasting colours and materials on floor, wall and ceiling. The consecutive living areas can also be divided by means of folding doors. A light line was integrated to intensify the visual connection between living room and bedroom. In this way the loft has become a strong interplay of creating openness and security in a framework of warm colours and materials, inspired by the sea and the beach.

Instalations

Botox cloud Location Berlin, Germany Status Workshop 2011 M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes’ song would definitely love to dance its way through the “BotoxCloud”, the interactive installation made by design agency UAU collectiv. German creative company Zirkumflex, on the occasion of the first edition of DAS weekend and Transmediale 2011, presented “BotoxCloud”, a reactive modular lighting system which hovers over your head like a cloud. The exhibition was organized in partnership with Chromolux and Zumtobel. “BotoxCloud’s”design and physical orientation has a futuristic touch, which explores the idea of pluralistic or probabilistic architecture. In other words, the installation yields various possible structural manifestations. For example, when the light comes through the paper models, its physicality changes. Its light reflective nature and its polygonic configuration give an impression of an ever-changing design object. Similarly, the title “BotoxCloud” comes as no surprise. Like a cloud, the interactive installation constantly transforms and progresses creating news images for the viewers. The paper models are cut and folded in a certain way. They create interesting patterns and representations and in this way engage the audience both visually and mentally. The installation uses design as a medium through which the complexities of the surrounding world could be comprehended. In this project, the complexities of the weather are demonstrated through the abstracted composition of the paper models, which consist the “BotoxCloud”. In collaboration with Zirkumflex, UAU collectiv published a limited edition cut and fold print of the paper models used in the installation. This limited edition was made of two abstract paper models, which can be constructed individually or combined in various connections, both large and small, capturing the light like clouds on a sunny day.

34 Location Politecnico Milano Status Workshop 2011 Botox Utopia: UAU collectiv & Drew Seskunas An interactive light installation constructed and designed using student participation from September 26th – 30th, 2011. Inspired by the sparkling patterns which emerge from crystal growth in geodes, BotoxUtopia is a student generated light-sculpture. Voluteers will participate in a weeklong workshop where they will learn the construction of basic, reflective volumes and their potential accumulations. The basic volumes will be “grown” during the workshop into sculptural zones; each wired with a unique light quality. The final installation will consist of 3 zones which interact visually through the movement of visitors in the sensored enviroment below the sculpture.BotoxUtopia will be mounted along a stretch of the suspended corridor ceiling. Through the creation of an interactive environment generated from student input, BotoxUtopia adds a new dimension to traditional social utopian projects. A dimension where critical mass and movement both directly and indirectly influence the spatial qualities of the surroundings. The installation will, in effect, give the community of visitors the opportunity to collectively “play” the space like an instrument. The resulting songs will be written in light and as ephemeral as the passing moments, producing a level of interaction rarely explored in architectural design or social utopian projects.

BIKINI BERLIN Location Berlin, Germany Status Completed 2014 In the Summer 2008 UAU collectiv was approached by Design Hotels to aid in the creation of a proposal for an 80,000 sm site comprised of 4 existing buildings and the addition of a 5th unifying building that could run throughout the complex composed of retail, hotel, cinema and office space. The project could not be a cut and paste of existing programmatic standards but instead had to integrate new concepts for retail, hotel and office space. This called for a heavily integrated team of experts for hotel (Design hotels), retail (Axel Weber and Partners), and architecture (UAU collectiv).

The new project could also not overpower the existing iconic Modernist buildings which the city had lovingly named ‘The Bikini’ and had given landmark protection. The project therefore needed approval by the Monument Board of Berlin.

The new project could also not overpower the existing iconic Modernist buildings which the city had lovingly named ‘The Bikini’ and had given landmark protection. The project therefore needed approval by the Monument Board of Berlin. Working closely with historic expert Dr. Peter Limburgh, UAU collectiv created designs to bring the heavily altered buildings back to their original splendor and then proposed a new architecture that acts as a silk scarf that easily morphs between the existing buildings, opening to create new spaces and those that commingle with the existing buildings. The project client, Munich based property developers BBIKG, of the Schörghuber Group, quickly approved the concept and put the project on a fast-track timeline to open in Fall 2012. Because of this, a tight relationship between UAU collectiv as design architects developed with the Berlin-based executive architects KEC, (structural engineers) and P2B (MEP Engineers) to negotiate the demands of making large scale editions and restoration to landmarked Modernist buildings.

Lecture

Isn’t Limburg represented at the Milan Expo? Is there a solution to empty churches? How can architecture and agriculture become one? The architectural firm UAUcollectiv of Limburg launches a unique concept at the Milan Expo. They will give a challenging lecture on innovative and contemporary urban agriculture according to a cradle-tocradle principle and some of their own projects. ORA ET GUSTA is based on a study that resulted from graduation projects of 2 employees, Elisah Willen and Robbert Errico. These projects belong to the theme of the Milan Expo: ‘Feeding the world, energy for life’. The synergy between the 2 projects, that arose at the University of Hasselt - faculty of Architecture and Art, have led to an optimised concept that fits with the philosophy of UAUcollectiv. ORA ET GUSTA goes a step further than only providing an answer to the needs of today.
