• How to Prep for a Session

• Ask tutee for materials in advance (i.e., course PPT slides)

• Review the course syllabus

• Reach out to Amy for resources

• Review your notes/homework from when you took the course

• Create a tutoring session agenda in advance with your tutee

• Gauge timing of session and how much material to prep

• Find helpful online practice videos

• Identify practice problems in the course textbook you can work on (as long as they are not assigned as homework for credit)

• Create your own practice problems and/or get ideas from the Peer Tutoring Blackboard site

• Send practice problems to your tutees ahead of time

• Create practice problems for you tutee to work on after the session (if requested)

• How to Teach a Concept in Multiple Ways

• Use different techniques

• i.e. visual v. auditory (For example, using a whiteboard versus talking through a concept)

• Ask tutee what has been helpful for them in the past when learning new material

• Have conceptual discussion of a topic to build a foundational understanding

• How to Approach not Knowing an Answer

• It is okay to not know everything. Tutors are not expected to have all the answers all the time!

• In first tutoring session, normalize the idea that you will not always know the answer.

• Quick Google Search to try to trigger your memory

• Work through it with your tutee using available resources (Professor’s PPT slides, textbook or other class resources) – opportunity to model for your

• It’s ok to say, “I don’t know the answer but I will research it and get back to you.” Tell your tutee you will look into it after the session and circle back to them (helpful to give a timeframe to manage their expectations).

• You can encourage your tutee to research the solution by visiting professor’s office hours or the appropriate Learning Center.

• How to Check for Comprehension

• Ask open-ended questions (how/why) rather than yes/no questions

• Have your tutee walk you through some problems

• Ask your tutee to “teach” the content back to you

• Create a practice quiz or do a Kahoot

• Directly ask what specific areas they are still struggling with

• Revisit previously shaky content in the following session
