New Student & Family Programs Welcome Weeks 2012
Welcome from the Division of Student Affairs Welcome to the You of A! On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs, I am excited to welcome you to the University of Arkansas community and share with you the 2012 Hog W.I.L.D. Welcome Weeks Guide. Now is a great time to begin your college experience at Arkansas and we are honored that you chose to join the Razorback family. The Division of Student Affairs provides you with essential programs and services that will strengthen your academic success and personal growth. I hope you take advantage of the premiere programs and events highlighted in this guide as they have been designed especially for you. We hope that you get the chance to meet new people, learn your way around campus and take part in some of the unique traditions that make our campus great. Congratulations! You will be joining classmates who, like yourself, are the brightest and best! Once again, welcome to the University of Arkansas. Our staff members stand ready to assist you in achieving your educational goals and strengthening you for success! I wish you a safe and joyful journey. StrengthsQuest Talent Themes: Achiever, Relator, Input, Intellection, Strategic Favorite Tradition: The Hurricane Hog cheer at Razorback Football games, as well as tailgating before the games. Woo Pig! Advice to Students: I would advise a first year student to just simply get involved with something that interests them around the University of Arkansas campus. The more you get involved or engaged in activities, then the more comfortable you will feel while transitioning from high school to college. Getting involved also opens numerous opportunities for you as well as breaking down barriers.

GETTING AROUND
Campus
WELCOME WEEKS Tips Read over the entire schedule of events and make a list of the activities you want to attend. Bring your questions to a Help-A-Hog table (see page 9). We all had a first day at the University of Arkansas too and know that questions will arise! Challenge yourself to meet at least 3 new people at each event you attend. Take a walk around campus and find your classrooms the day before class begins. Be a True Razorback and join in all campus traditions. Have a ton of fun!!
Razorback Transit provides fare-free fixed route bus and paratransit service to all University of Arkansas students, faculty, staff and the general public during all hours of operation. Razorback Transit buses have wheelchair lifts, bicycle racks and are air-conditioned.

HISTORY & Traditions
Strengthening Students for Success
THE FOUNDING of the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS The University of Arkansas, the flagship campus of the University of Arkansas System, resides on a former hilltop farm overlooking the Ozark Mountains to the south. At the University’s founding in 1871, the site in Fayetteville was described as “second to none in the state of Arkansas.”

Located in Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas is both the major land-grant university for Arkansas and the state university. The University was created under the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862, whereby federal land sales provided funds for new colleges devoted to “agriculture and the mechanic arts,” “scientific and classical studies,” and “military tactics” for the “liberal and practical education of the industrial classes.” The University’s founding satisfied the provision in the Arkansas Constitution of 1868 that the General Assembly “establish and maintain a State University.” Citizens in Fayetteville and surrounding Washington County raised $130,000 to secure the University in a statewide competition sparked by the General Assembly’s Organic Act of 1871, providing for the “location, organization and maintenance of the Arkansas Industrial University with a normal department [i.e., teacher education] therein.” The University of Arkansas campus encompasses more than 130 buildings on 345 acres and provides nearly 200 academic programs, more than some universities twice its size. Yet it maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio (currently 17:1) that makes personal attention possible. The University promotes undergraduate research in virtually every discipline and makes higher education affordable with competitively priced tuition and generous financial aid.

HISTORY & Traditions SENIOR Walk
Alma MATER Pure as the dawn on the brow of thy beauty Watches thy soul from the mountains of God Over the fates of thy children departed Far from the land where their footsteps have trod. Beacon of hope in the ways dreary lighted; Pride our hearts that are loyal and true; From those who adore unto one who adores us Mother of Mothers, we sing unto you.
Senior Walk is one of our most revered traditions. It is unique among American universities and is one of the most widely known University of Arkansas traditions. There have been different accounts as to how Senior Walk began; the most common is that it was begun by the Class of 1905. A few years later, the class of 1904 added their names on the sidewalk. Each graduating class since then has had their names engraved in the walk. In 1930, slabs were placed for all of the graduating classes prior to 1904. Originally, the names were stamped by hand, but that changed in 1986 when University Physical Plant employees invented the Sand Hog, a machine designed specifically for the purpose of etching the names in Senior Walk. Senior Walk now stretches over 5 miles and contains the names of more than 120,000 University of Arkansas graduates.
Fight SONG Hit that line! Hit that line! Keep on going, Take that ball right down the field! Giver a cheer. Rah! Rah! Never fear. Rah! Rah! Arkansas will never yield! On your toes, Razorbacks, to the finish Carry on with all your might! For it’s A-A-A-R-K-A-N-S-A-S for Arkansas! Fight! Fight! Fight!

CALLING the HOGS
RUNNING THROUGH
Razorback fans have been “Calling the Hogs” since the 1920s. It is said to have begun when a group of farmers attending a game began issuing hog calls to encourage a lagging Razorback football team. The encouragement worked and the attending crowd took notice of the farmers’ calling. By the next game, a group of men had organized to cry “Wooo, Pig, Sooie.” Since then this rallying cry has grown to become the school yell that unites Arkansas fans everywhere. As with many traditions, the Hog Call has been altered and refined over the years into the rousing chorus that is so well known today.
Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie! Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie! Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie! Razorbacks!!
The University of Arkansas has a special way of welcoming its football players onto the field of every home game they play. It is called RUNNING THROUGH THE “A.” The Razorback Marching Band concludes their home pre-game performances by forming a giant “A.” Then, holding formation, they march the length of the football field until the top of the “A” reaches the end zone nearest the Arkansas locker room. While the band plays on and the crowd cheers, head coach Bobby Petrino leads his players through the “A” out onto the field upholding and participating in this long-standing tradition.
SPOOFER’S Stone The Spoofer’s Stone is another longstanding tradition at the University of Arkansas. It dates back to the construction of Old Main (University Hall). As the limestone for the building was being transported to the construction site, one of the oxcarts broke depositing a large and now broken block of limestone in the lawn. Once construction was completed and the debris was cleared, the broken stone was left at the lawn. It immediately became a popular resting spot for students on the campus. In the early days of the University, male and female students were not allowed to

the BIG “A”

fraternize in any way while on campus. This put a great strain on the social life of the “Campsters.” And thus a great tradition was born. A female student would take a seat on the stone and slip a note for her sweetheart in the crack of the stone; she would then rise and walk away. A short time later the male student would stroll over to the stone, take a seat, and retrieve his mail. This continued to be a popular custom with the students for many years. Spoofer’s Stone also became a popular place for marriage proposals, and couples who became engaged would often remove small portions of the stone for mementos.
