THE SHC
The mission of the Southern Heritage Classic is to provide an annual cultural celebration as the premier sports and entertainment event in Memphis that creates a strong economic impact and promotes higher education.
The Southern Heritage Classic, founded in 1990 by Fred Jones Jr., brings fans from across the U.S. to watch HBCU football every September at the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, TN. In 2024, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions will face off against the Tennessee State University Tigers. The greatness of the Classic rests on how it connects kindred spirits - young and old - in celebration of the beauty of cultural diversity and the richness of the city's heritage. The National Civil Rights Museum will present a special exhibition in honor of the Black collegiate football experience and long tradition entitled, The Southern Heritage Classic: Celebrating 35 Years of an HBCU Memphis Tradition. The exhibition features 120 artifacts, including UAPB, that tell the story of Fred Jones Jr., the founder of the Southern Heritage Classic, and the participating schools.

2024 Southern Heritage Classic College & Career
High school educators are encouraged to bring their students to the Classic College & Career Fair at the Memphis Sports and Events Center (995 Early Maxwell Rd) on September 13 from 8:30am-2pm. This event is presented by the Memphis Office of Youth Services and partners.
