MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR

As noted inventor, scientist, and author, Benjamin Franklin once stated, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” This is true for the 144 year history of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). We truly believe that higher education’s impact on communities truly knows no bounds. Since I have arrived at the university four years ago, Homecoming still remains one of the most important events I look forward to as it gives me the opportunity to see a multitude of individuals like you who strongly and continuously make a significant and positive impact on students attending UAPB. This university was established to provide its students with a challenging yet nurturing educational experience. That tradition continues today as a result of the respectful partnership between the university and its constituents, the steadfast focus on our mission, and the consistent philanthropic support of all who cherish and love “Dear Mother.” It is because of your generosity that we can continue to meet the educational needs of our students through scholarship. Whether you have given year after year, have only contributed a few years, or even if you are a first time donor, you are a part of the tremendous story that happens day after day, year after year, and decades upon decades at this great institution. These gifts not only significantly impact our classrooms and our programs, they represent an investment in our students and a vote of confidence for our faculty and staff. UAPB students consistently excel in the classroom, on the field and court, in the community, and in the workforce. This high standard is sustained, in part, because of your continued support. Thank you for your unwavering support and assisting in making a difference in the lives of our students. Standing together—united by a deep sense of commitment—we are expanding the boundaries of what is possible at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. We are forever grateful for the trust you have placed in the university’s hands—to lead, to discover, and to unite. Your confidence confirms that a bright future for UAPB means a bright future for all.

Laurence B. Alexander, J.D., Ph.D. Chancellor

Marla Mayberry, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, joined the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and Development. “Today, I celebrate new beginnings!” said Mayberry. “I am honored to serve among the dynamic team at UAPB. A promising beginning that I am certain will yield incredible opportunities for the students, university, and the state!” After a national search conducted by Gonser Gerber, a firm that specializes in advancement and development, Mayberry was hired to replace James Tyson, who left the position last year. Mayberry has more than 20 years of progressively responsible experience leading nonprofit and higher education development teams. She has led organizations through start-up, survival, turnaround and growth modes. Her understanding of distribution channels encompasses major fundraising, community advocacy and involvement, strategic planning, process improvement, financial management, leadership, and government. Before she arrived at UA, she had major fundraising roles for four years as Executive Director of the YMCA of Greater Tulsa and four years as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Metropolitan Tulsa Urban League.

Annual Donors Report June 2016 - July 2017

The Prado Museum was more than impressive! The students had an art history lesson with regard to subjects of paintings, styles, techniques, religious history and the influence of religion on the visual arts from the 14th to the 21st centuries. Our first concert was Wednesday night (March 22nd) at the church of San Manual y San Benito. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century in neo-Byzantine style (check it out on Google). The sanctuary is stunningly beautiful and ornate. We performed for a large (100+) and appreciative audience. They rewarded the Choir with an extended and enthusiastic standing ovation at the end of the concert. Thursday morning we sang at El Escorial, the royal palace. We entertained and were entertained by the students (their boy choir--elementary through high school) at the monastery school. From what I understand, this was a prestigious venue. At the end the students wanted to take pictures with us...they were so excited, as were our students. The students then went on a tour of the castle, including the crypt where all the kings and queens and members or the royal family (over the centuries) are interred. The Pantheon of kings includes all the kings on one side and the queens on the other. The exception to the kings being on one side is Queen Isabella II (of Chris Columbus fame) who is buried with the kings and her husband who is buried with the queens. So much to talk about.

UAPB Vesper Choir: Trip to Spain Contributed by Michael Bates, PhD Director, UAPB Vesper Choir Professor of Music

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains" (a reference from the musical "My Fair Lady". However, [Wednesday, March 22, 2017] it was not rain, it was snow!! After flying from Little Rock to Dallas on Monday, March 20th, we departed Dallas in the mid-afternoon for the 9 hour flight to Madrid, Spain. We had 5 or 6 students who had never flown before, so it was interesting to watch their reactions. The flight out of Little Rock was a bit bumpy because we were on the smaller commuter jet, but the trans-Atlantic flight was on a Boeing 787...9 seats across; so, it was smooth sailing. We arrived in Madrid to temperatures around 70 degrees. The students are aware of the significance of this cultural/educational/ performance trip. Madrid is the capital and the largest city in Spain. Our main tour guide has presented the history of Spain as we have traveled throughout the city, both the historical context of the Spanish monarchy and the contemporary 20th and 21st century contexts. History has come alive because I had forgotten how dominant and strong the Spanish were as they sought to dominate the world (discoveries, conquests, riches, politics, the visual arts, etc.). Spain is a monarchy and it is a strongly Catholic country. Our tour guide has explained about the growth of the city of Madrid over the past thousand plus years, about the Moorish conquest and cultural influence, about the politics of Franco and his fascism and the changes in the country since his death with regard to the country's modernization and integration into the European community. There are palaces large and small all over Madrid, and new construction abounds. The students are being challenged culturally and educationally, by the food, by the money (the Euro), by television (it is so different with regard to programming), by language, by transportation and traffic within the city (cars, crazy/daring drivers and motor scooters), by the architectural history, by the artwork, by the bothersome and ever present gypsies, and the old juxtaposed against the new, to name a few challenges.

Friday, we travel south to the summer palace at Aranjuez. The land north of Madrid (which is at the center of Spain) is quite arid; however, the land to the south is extremely fertile. Lots of agriculture...vegetables, melons, olives (Spain has over 3.5 million olive trees). Though the Italians have the greatest commerce in olive oil, they get their olives from Spain. The royal families built one of their summer residences in Aranjuez and the town (where the workers lived) grew up around the palace. It is huge! On one side was built the expansive quarters where the soldiers lived who protected the king when he was in residence. We toured through many rooms in the palace...the concert hall, the music room , formal dance room, the smoking room, the queen's bedroom, her make-up room and "office ", the king's Throne Room, etc. There were striking contrasts between the more austere palace of the royal family in the north (El Escorial) and the more opulent, luxurious palace in the south (Aranjuez). I had forgotten my history lessons and

prolonged standing ovation at the end. We even did an encore when they didn't stop applauding. Our videographer, alumnus Mr. Willie Everett has captured all of this on video and it will be shared. The only concluding drama occurred when we attempted to leave Spain on Sunday and they would not let one of our students leave the country because she had lost her passport. So, I had to stay an extra day with her until the Embassy, American Airlines and the Spanish Police worked out the details to allow her to go...Thanks be to God. Through it all, American Airlines was great!! We made it back to PB today, Monday!!! I can't say enough about how blessed we are to have had Ms. Joyce Bracy Vaughan, our Official Chaperone, with us. She helps keep me firmly grounded with sage advice, clarity of thinking and a genuine love for our students and for what is in the best interests of "Dear Mother". Thanks also go to our Assistant Director, Mr. Andee Book, and to our Musical Assistant, Mr. Jerron Liddell. The students have been great, as has been the staff...Ms. Vaughan, Mr. Book and Mr. Liddell. Our videographer, Mr. Everett, will have a great video presentation of our trip. Peace and thanks to all who made this possible.

had forgotten how rich and powerful the Spanish kings and (Queen Isabella I and II) were. At one point they ruled most of Europe and the New World (the Americas, Central America, Mexico, The Philippines, Hispaniola, Cuba, Puerto Rico, California and much of southwest US. The Spanish language, culture and architectural history remain. It was the Catholic kings who united Spain. Just think, the UAPB was privileged to have the opportunity to present a recital in the Chapel of The Royal Seat of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Royal Castle and Monastery of El Escorial) and a full concert (March 25th) at the huge Gothic cathedral (built over the former Grand Mosque) whose construction was begun in 1227. Enough history. Spain. Spain. Spain; hills, hills, hills; walking, walking, walking; stairs, stairs, stairs; narrow streets, cold and damp; bathrooms, bathrooms, We Need a Bathroom! Problems...English, English, we need a translator who speaks any kind (broken, fractured, Pigeon or The Kings) we need someone to translate this menu, or we can't eat. Oh, I can't forget the bidet...what, how, why? Where's the manual? These were some of the challenges we faced in Spain and that will be confronted in international travel. Our students got a great dose. Saturday, March 25th, our concert at the Cathedral in Toledo was a tremendous success. I was told that at least 225 people were in attendance. There was sustained applause after almost each selection, and a University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff

ANNUAL GIVING DRIVE Annual contributions for the period July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017, totaled $1,663,406.88. Our donors designated their gifts consistent with their interests and chose a variety of ways to make an investment in our students. Many donors gave unrestricted gifts so that unanticipated student needs could be met. As a result, the Annual Giving Drive consisted of several successful initiatives. Though all specific initiatives that gave a positive impetus to our fundraising efforts are too numerous to mention herein, special note is made of a few that have a far-reaching and long term impact:

The Lifeline Endowed Fund was established in 2009 to address the emergency and dire need situations that often arise with our students. All donations to the fund from October 1, 2007 – September 30, 2012, were matched dollar-for-dollar by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education/HBCU (Title III) Initiatives. Similarly, donations made October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2017, will also be matched. (Please note that, donors do not qualify for higher giving level because of the match made by the Title III grant). As of June 30, 2017, the Lifeline Endowed Fund had reached $1,082,188 (including pending matching funds).

Dorothy Magett Fiddmont New Millennium Leaders (DMF-NML) The Fiddmont Leaders initiative remains a strong impetus for scholarship support of our students.

The approach of the year 2000 was a time of excitement, fear, and anticipation. There was much ado, much preparation, and much trepidation as to how technology would make the transition. Would mass transit systems in large cities be immobilized? Would Wall Street and major financial institutions collapse? Was UAPB positioned for the 21st century and all that it entailed? Indeed, the new millennium was upon us, and just as pundits the world-over readied for international and national technological challenges, one individual came forth with an idea that would keep UAPB in the forefront of educational excellence.

The following individuals made gifts July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017: Bailey-Jefferson, Dr. Marilyn Crumbly, J. B. & Johnetta W. Fiddmont, Dr. Dorothy Magett Hall, Arthur L. & Dr. Margaret J. McGehee, JD McIntosh, Jean H. Okiror, Dr. Shadrach O. & Dr. Linda L.

Dr. Dorothy Magett Fiddmont set forth the idea of identifying a group of individuals who would agree to be ambassadors for the university and as evidence of their commitment donate $2,000 to provide much needed scholarship funds for deserving students at UAPB. The institution, from its earliest days as Branch Normal, had always had the good fortune to have persons who were deeply committed to its mission, goals, and objectives. The group now being formed would comprise some of the individuals from the earlier years of Arkansas AM&N College and many more from more recent years of the institution. They would be the New Millennium Leaders. As ambassadors, they would be the individuals who could be counted on to share the many positive things happening at the university. They would be kept abreast of happenings at the university by remaining connected, involved and wellinformed. The Millennium Leaders have met the challenge. They have stayed the course. Through good times and not so good times, the Millennium Leaders have been strong advocates for the university. They have focused on all the good and positive things UAPB has forever encompassed in the midst of no publicity, poor publicity and negative publicity. The Millennium Leaders have been a positive force and remain a strong impetus for scholarship support for our students. (Please note that, donors do not qualify for higher giving level because of the match made by the Title III funds).

YOUR GENEROSITY IN ACTION In 2016 – 2017, your financial investment in our students assisted with the cost of attending college and the quality of education they received: • Over $650,000.00 was made available to students in the form of awards, and scholarships for tuition, fees and books; • Hundreds of students were able to participate in extracurricular activities and attend career development activities on and off campus; • Classroom supplies and instructional material were purchased; and • Overall, UAPB’s academic programs, extracurricular offerings and physical plant continue to improve. YOU helped to make dreams come true!

Here is what our students said:

“I made UAPB my school of choice because I wanted a home away from home. The size and environment was a perfect fit for me and I felt welcomed as soon as I stepped on campus grounds. After school, I plan on doing business in the fashion industry by working as a visual merchandiser, and eventually running my own fashion business.” -LaKeitria, ‘20

“By receiving this scholarship, I am able to concentrate on what is important for me, education. Your financial generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal and has inspired me to help others by giving back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help other students achieve their goal just as you have helped me. Thank you” -Terrell, ‘18

“I am a freshman and I am currently an active member of the Texas Club on campus. My major is chemistry and I chose this major because I aspire to become a cosmetic chemist. I love doing hair and I want to make hair products for women and girls with natural hair. I chose the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff because my parents met and graduated from UAPB. They’ve told me many stories of their time on campus and how much they enjoyed it, so I wanted to follow in their footsteps and become part of the pride.” -Ma’at, ‘20

“I decided to attend UAPB because I wanted to attend a school that offered diversity, empowerment, and a supportive atmosphere. I decided to major in theatre because I was told to study what you love not what you think will get you a job. My major has taught me presentation skills, hard work, and project management. I will use what I learned at this university to further my education and career.” -Justice, ‘17

“I am a 35 year old African American female. My academic success is very important to me. I work very hard to maintain honor status. My cumulative grade point average currently is a 3.3. For the majority of my time in school I have worked full time to support myself and my children. Your scholarship allowed me to continue nursing school, because all my other sources have been depleted.” -Vineta, ‘17

Annual Donors Report June 2016 - July 2017

“One day, I will follow your footsteps and help other students achieve their goals at the UAPB by giving back. Growing up in an underserved community offered many financial and academic challenges which made me quickly learn the value of a college education. Thank you for supporting the deserving students at UAPB. Your generosity truly makes a difference!” -LaShanna, ‘17

“For the past two years, I’ve worked in the Office of Development during the annual phonathon season to help raise money for future students. And to top it all off, I have been the best cheerleader this campus has seen in years. All of this was accomplished while maintaining a 3.6 grade point average. Thank you for your donation and again for investing in my education.” -Mark, ‘18

“Moving from Chicago to Pine Bluff was really hard for me. I thought I would never adjust to the southern way of life, but I have. Now the university is helping me become the person I want to be. After I graduate, I plan on attending law school. I have always wanted to be a lawyer. I feel that if I become a lawyer, I can help correct so much wrong in the world.” -Jalisa, ‘19

“I have enjoyed my time at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff studying Industrial Technology Management & Applied Engineering (B.S.) with emphasis in Construction Management and am eager in becoming a part of the workforce. With the knowledge I gain at UAPB, I plan to begin my true life’s work by bringing quality infrastructure to low income areas across the U.S. I cannot thank you enough for contributing to my dream.” -Zenora, ‘17

“I thank you for this scholarship. With competition and performances coming up, this has truly helped me not worry about finances and let me focus on my passion and studies. I have worked hard to maintain my 3.9 grade point average and continued to appear on the Chancellor’s List. It has been a pleasure representing this university. ” -Ebonee, ‘17

“I graduated high school with a 4.5 GPA and was number nine in my class. I came to UAPB because of the family atmosphere, adequate campus size, and excellent studentteacher ratio. I liked the idea of becoming more that just a face to everyone but actually being known.” -Kayla, ‘20

Upon further inquiry, they will find the museum also has an impressive collection of photographs, yearbooks, catalogs, university documents, sports memorabilia, artifacts and other ephemera from Branch Normal College to UAPB. Established in 2004 with the financial support of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education, Institutional Service–HBCU, Title III Program and private gifts and donations, the museum today serves as a living memorial to the many persons who helped shape the history of this institution and the Arkansas Delta. As the university grows and evolves, so does our history. The museum staff recently updated the exhibits highlighting the contributions of former Chancellor Lawrence A. Davis, Jr. and Dr. Calvin Johnson, past interim Chancellor, and created a new exhibit featuring our current chief administrator, Dr. Laurence B. Alexander. The staff is currently researching and designing an exhibition that will detail the history of sports at the university from 1915 to 2017. These are the realities that evolve from your investment in the University Museum and Cultural Center. Each semester students from various classes are required to visit the museum to complete class assignments and other research projects, but many students often return with friends and family because the museum has served as a unique and positive learning experience for them. Students are able to visualize how their university has evolved from a small teacher’s college, with seven students, to a multi-purpose university, attracting students from throughout the United States and other countries. They can see themselves as a part of this evolving history. We are deeply appreciative of your gifts and donations to the University Museum and Cultural Center. As we continue to preserve our legacy, your continuous support is vital to our effort to provide our students a unique and rewarding learning experience.

FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP GOAL REACHED! UAPB ALUMNI HAVE HELPED TO MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE “Being on a scholarship is a blessing to me,” says Brandon Duncan, a senior quarterback at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. “If I wasn’t on a scholarship, I probably wouldn’t be in college.” For decades upon decades, the football program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff wasn’t able to have many Brandon Duncans on its roster, student-athletes fortunate to be on a football scholarship. That was because the program’s level of funding limited the number of scholarships that could be dispensed to the players on the team. Through the years, that limitation was the key obstacle that limited the Golden Lions to capturing just one outright Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in the history of football at the university. Championships were hard to come by for the Golden Lions -- not because of a lack of will, but rather because of a lack of scholarships. Even in the team’s run to the 2012 SWAC championship over Jackson State University in Birmingham, Ala., UAPB was relegated to awarding the equivalent of just 33 full scholarships, the second lowest total in the 10-team conference. UAPB’s 2012 SWAC championship season was followed by seasons that saw the Golden Lions go 2-9 in 2013 and 4-7 in 2014. It was at that point, says Director of Athletics Lonza Hardy Jr., that the decision was made to launch a campaign aimed at generating the necessary funds to increase scholarship funding for the football program. — continued on page 37

“At the National Alumni Convention in Atlanta in 2015, we officially launched the UAPB Football Investment and Scholarship Fund and we had as our goal raising nearly $650,000 in order to level the playing field for the program. Doing so would not only enable the program to increase the number of scholarship players on the field, but it would also make the program eligible to play the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams, games that would yield high financial rewards for the football program.” At the National Alumni Convention in Pine Bluff last July, that campaign successfully concluded when the final $320,000 goal announced during the previous year’s Alumni Homecoming Convocation was not only met, but it was surpassed. With more scholarships now available, positive changes are already being seen. “The increase in football scholarships gives life to our program,” says head football coach Monte Coleman. “Recruiting is the lifeline of any football program. Now, our program will have the ability to be equal to our sister schools and it gives us opportunities to play ‘money games.’ Increasing the number of scholarships gives us a chance.” Whether an alumnus of the University donated $5,000 to the Football Investment and Scholarship Fund or just $5, it has all combined to make dreams come true for the members of the Golden Lion football team. Tashad R. Charity, a senior defensive end, is one of those players who has benefitted from the contributions of the alumni. “I thank the UAPB alumni for their efforts in giving me the opportunity to obtain a full scholarship to play football and receive my education from this institution,” says Charity. “It means so much to me because I value education and as an African-American student attending an HBCU institution, it’s an outstanding experience. I thank our alumni for their kindness and for making this experience possible for me.” What the contributions of the alumni have also done, besides placing more student-athletes on scholarship, is open doors for the largest game contracts ever secured by the UAPB athletics program. That, in turn, was instrumental in the athletics program securing a $900,000 grant from the NCAA in July earmarked for academic support. That, too, is the largest grant ever secured by the UAPB athletics program. “All of these great things have happened because of the generosity of our alumni and corporate partners,” says Hardy. “The stage is now set for great things to happen for our entire athletics program and on a more frequent basis. The sky will be the limit to what we can achieve in the upcoming years.”

PRIORITY GIVING The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) relies heavily on unrestricted gifts that provide flexibility in use. Student needs, classroom and laboratory enhancements, extracurricular activities, and expanded learning experiences all require funds to keep pace with the job market and new and innovative career options. The demand for revenue in such areas fluctuate and only unrestricted dollars provide the resources commensurate with the need. Unrestricted giving is among our top three priority areas for fundraising. Your investment in scholarships help us to recruit some of the brightest minds our nation has to offer. We are able to keep pace with other institutions in recruiting academically advanced students. Creating a revenue stream for athletics from private dollars has the snowball effect of not only helping student athletes. It releases monies once used for athletics to be used to fund other critical areas. Gifts were received July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017.

CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM The University continues to be grateful for the support of its corporate partners. The companies and corporate foundations listed on this page are those that have provided contributions to the University and its Foundation through their matching gift program. The University urges its alumni and friends to investigate the matching gift program that may be offered through their companies. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. The impact of your gift to UAPB may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies even match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. To learn more about your employers matching gift program, please contact your Human resources department or check your company's website.
