2014 UAlbany Women’s Soccer 2014 OUTLOOK In 2013, injuries and youth led the UAlbany women’s soccer team to have a tough season. Returning five of the top six scorers, the Great Danes will look to infuse a large returning corps with a strong recruiting class to make a charge in the America East. FORWARDS The front row for UAlbany will be young but strong for the team. Junior Leanne Miller is the main veteran of the group, starting in 13 games last year with six shots on goal. Two freshmen will compete at forward this year. From the Golden State is Vivian Vega, a former member of the U17 Mexican National Team that scored 105 goals at Segerstrom. Also joining is one of the top players in the Capital District, Morgan Loder, who scored a CRCS-school record 137 goals, including a state-record 10 goals in one game. FORWARD/MIDFIELD The Great Danes will have some players shift between the front line and the midfield. 2013 America East All-Rookie Team member Alexa Schneider was the team’s top threat last season, scoring three goals and two assists for eight points. Finishing third on the team in shots last year with 21, junior Allison Carhart, one of the team’s primary reserves last year, scored a goal and assist each in 2013. Kiana Rugar redshirted last season and will play for the first time this year. A couple of new faces will help the unit. Returning to the Capital District is former Guilderland High-star Angela Luizzi, who scored six goals and a team-best five assists as a freshman at Hartwick College last year. Also incoming is freshman Kelsey Luke, a former player for U17 and U18 Real Colorado who led Mountain Vista to a #1-ranking in Colorado and three conference titles. MIDFIELD Three veteran players will focus their efforts on the midfield lines. One of the team’s primary shooters, sophomore midfielder Caitlyn Paltsios scored two goals off 23 shots for UAlbany in her first campaign. Also earning a pair of scores last year was junior Krista Fitzpatrick, who finished 2013 with a goal and an assist with just four shots. The third member is junior Kelly Kempf, who will serve as an assistant team captain after playing in 10 games last year and 24 in her career. DEFENSE A number of starters in the back row return to anchor the line. The only player to start all 17 games last year, senior Stephanie Nelle scored a goal and two assists from the center back position and has played as a starter the past three years. Redshirt sophomore Shelby Belak started eight games on the back row while sophomore Bianca Webb also started eight games. Bolstering the line among the returners redshirt sophomore Celia Balf, who is back after missing 2013 with an injury and will serve as the team captain this year, and Juliana Martins, who enters her sophomore year after playing five games last year as a reserve. Two newcomers will battle for playing time on defense. Katie Carnell, a JUCO transfer from Edmonds, led her team to an NWAACC title game appearance and 12-1-3 record. Also new is freshman Alex Dencker, a Section 9 Class AA All-Star at Newburgh Free Academy, leading the school to eight victories last year. GOALKEEPERS The two Alanas will stand as the last line of defense for UAlbany this season. The primary starter the last two seasons, junior Alana Brennan ranked ninth in all of Division I with 7.27 saves per game last year. She ranks tied for second all-time in UAlbany DI history in victories, having a 2.90 GAA in 11 starts in 2013. Competing with Brennan is Alana Olivieri, who comes from fellow SUNY school the University at Buffalo. Olivieri transfers after a redshirt season and has four years of eligibility. She has a two-year all-league player at Our Lady of Mercy, leading the school to the 2011 state semifinals.

Women’s golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and football, a Division I FCS program, enters its second year as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2014 after competing in the Northeast Conference for the past 14 seasons. UAlbany has won 74 conference championships and produced 31 NCAA Tournament teams since moving to Division I in 1999. In the 2013-14 season, UAlbany continued its strong athletic performance with its third-consecutive America East Commissioner’s Cup, winning eight America East championships and competing in four NCAA Tournaments. The lacrosse program, among the top 10 in both national polls, won its first-ever league crown and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Volleyball, field hockey and softball also made the NCAA field. In 2006-07, the Great Danes had a breakout year as a Division I program with conference championships in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s indoor track, women’s volleyball and baseball. UAlbany won the first of two consecutive league titles. The program’s storied turnaround resulted in a strong NCAA showing against No. 2 Connecticut. UAlbany was awarded the 2004-05 Stuart P. The quality of UAlbany’s athletic program is evidenced by some of the finest facilities in the nation. The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. In the spring of 1992, the University opened SEFCU Arena (formerly Recreation & Convocation Center), an $11 million state-of-the-art facility. SEFCU Arena is the home for UAlbany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has a .11 mile indoor track. The 4,538-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and pop concerts, sporting events and University activities. The playing surface on the arena’s three basketball courts and the surrounding track were completely renovated in December 2004. Adjacent to SEFCU Arena is the Physical Education Building which houses University Gymnasium; three full-size playing surfaces which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; four racquetball/handball courts; four squash courts; a swimming pool; a weight training and fitness center with Olympic weights; an aerobic exercise room and a dance studio. SEFCU Arena and Physical Education Building were air-conditioned in March 1996, as the state appropriated funds for renovations and permanent improvements to the University’s facilities. The $2.3 million in funding was prompted by the New York Giants’ decision to hold its football training camp on campus. The project brought together the region’s community in what proved to be a successful partnership. Additionally, UAlbany’s air-supported structure, fitted with a brandnew covering with minor interior renovations in the spring of 2003, is located to the east of the Physical Education Building, and may be utilized for tennis, basketball, and indoor football practice. The indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, highlighted by 2012-13’s substantial additions. The University constructed a synthetic turf field designed for year-round recreational, intramural and club sport activities; a state-of-the-art 8,500 seat multi-sport complex for football and soccer; and a brand new track and field venue.

The practice fields on the Western Avenue side of campus were renovated in 2012 with 263,000 square feet of two-inch-thick athletic sod and the irrigation system was refurbished. UAlbany broke ground on the site of what has become two allweather athletic fields in May 2005. “John Fallon Field” is the home UAlbany has an athletic history that dates back to the late 1890s to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a sand and rubber infill when the first known intercollegiate teams arrived on campus. turf field that stretches 99,450 square feet. An adjacent surface UAlbany competed at the college division level prior to the NCAA’s known as “Alumni Turf Field” is used for women’s field hockey in restructuring in 1972. The athletic program moved from Division III addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. The second phase of the complex’s construction, which to Division II in 1995-96. includes seating for nearly 2,500 spectators, was completed in the fall of 2008.

2014 UAlbany Women’s Soccer A Quick Reference for NCAA Rules and Regulations Concerning Representatives of Athletics Interests (Boosters), Fans and Alumni Relative to Recruiting Q: My son is a current student at UAlbany. I own a suite at the football stadium and often give my son five tickets to invite his friends to watch the game with us. He is friends with one of the UAlbany student-athletes. Is it okay for the UAlbany student-athlete to join us in the suite during the games? A: No. Allowing the student-athlete to attend the suite at anytime during a competition is considered an extra benefit as this constitutes preferential seating to an athletic contest. Since suite seating is not available to the general student body this would be a special arrangement provided by a booster and would result in the student-athlete being declared ineligible. As a result, the student-athlete would be required to pay back the cost of the benefit received (e.g. if the cost of the ticket is $500 the student-athlete would have to pay that amount to a charity of choice). Dependent upon the value of the benefit received, the student-athlete would be required to sit out of the prescribed number of competition(s). The student-athlete’s eligibility would not be reinstated until repayment was made and the game suspension fulfilled. Even though the student-athlete may be friends with your son or daughter, the NCAA student-athlete status supersedes friendship in regard to the NCAA legislation. UAlbany may provide its student athletes with admission to all regular season home contests in sports other than which the student-athlete participates however the following criteria must be met: • Admission is provided via a pass list • Proof of identity is provided. • Seating is only located in the general seating area of the facility. Q: Can a booster contact high school coaches or guidance counselors directly regarding a prospective student-athlete? A: No. This contact would constitute recruiting. Q: If only UAlbany coaches, athletic department, and/or institutional staff members may recruit a prospect how may a booster help? A: A booster may: • Attend as many athletic contests as you desire to evaluate talent, provided you are not making contact with the prospect or any individual associated with the prospective student-athlete to encourage the prospect’s attendance at UAlbany • Call, write, or send newspaper articles to the UAlbany coaching staff regarding outstanding student-athletes in his/her area • Feel free to offer assistance such as lodging or meals to members of the coaching staff who are recruiting in his/her community Q: As a booster, if I attend a prospect’s athletic event, may I talk to the prospect’s coach after the event? A: No. A booster may not contact the coach, the prospect or family members, the principal or counselor in an attempt to evaluate a prospect. Q: What if a booster attends an athletic event and finds himself/herself sitting next to the parents of the prospect? A: Do not initiate conversation with the relatives. If conversation is initiated with the booster, respond in a civil manner but do not discuss the UAlbany Athletics Program with them. If they ask questions about the program, remind them that the NCAA prohibits a booster from discussing the program with them. Encourage the family to contact the UAlbany Athletic Department directly. Q: As a booster may I visit the prospect’s school to pick up transcripts or videotape/film to send to a college coach? A: No. A booster may not visit the prospect’s school to pick up transcripts or

videotapes/film pertaining to the evaluation of the prospect’s academic or athletic ability. Q: May a prospect call a booster? A: Yes. A booster may have a telephone conversation with a prospect only if the prospect initiates the call. The telephone call may not be prearranged by an institutional staff member, and the booster is not permitted to have a recruiting conversation with the prospect but may exhibit normal civility. The booster must refer any questions about the institution’s athletics program to the athletics department staff. Q: May boosters entertain relatives and friends of a prospective student-athlete at any site off- campus? A: No. Q: May a booster make a contact with a prospect and/or his or her guardian during an official or unofficial visit to campus? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to pay costs incurred by an athletics talent scout in studying or recruiting a prospect? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to provide free admission to UAlbany’s away contests to prospects, their relatives, or friends? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to pay in whole or in part the registration fees for summer sports camps? A: No. Q: Is it permissible for a booster to be involved in the on-campus entertainment of a prospect and/or his or her guardian during an official or unofficial visit? A: No. Q: During the recruitment of a prospect or prior to a prospect’s enrollment, may a booster be involved directly or indirectly in making arrangements for a prospect, the prospect’s relatives or friends to receive money, financial aid or equivalent inducements regardless if similar financial aid, benefits or arrangements are available to prospective students in general, their relatives or friends? A: No. Other types of inducements that are prohibited include, but are not limited to: • The use of an automobile; • Signing or cosigning a note for a loan; • Special discounts or payment arrangements on loan; • Cash or tangible items (e.g., clothes, cars, jewelry, stereo equipment , even a soft drink); • The promise of employment after college; • An employment arrangement for a prospect’s relatives or friend; • Purchase of items or services from a prospect or the prospect’s family at inflated prices; • Free or reduced -cost housing arrangements; • Free or reduced-cost services or rentals of any type; • The promise of financial aid for post graduate education; • The promise to pay or arrange payment of transportation costs incurred by relatives or friends of prospective student-athletes; • The use of UAlbany’s athletic equipment (e.g., for a high school all-star game); or • Sponsorship of or arrangement for an awards banquet for high school , prep school or two year college athletes by an institution, boosters, or its alumni groups or booster clubs.
