It is very important that you cure the calabash MATE gourd before any use. If you are wondering how to do it, just follow these simple steps:
Then, with the help of a spoon, carefully scrape the surface to remove the woody stem.
Once it is completely removed, clean the inner walls with a napkin to absorb the moisture and let it rest again for a few hours in a ventilated area under the sun.
Now it’s ready to use! Relax and enjoy your Balibetov Mate!
the gourd will also help to complete the curing process. The more you use it, the faster the Calabash fully cures
panic if the Calabash interior changes from dark green to black! That’s also part of the curing process.
Heat up the water and bring it to a simmer (around 170-180 degrees Fahrenheit).
Meanwhile, fill ¾ of the gourd with YERBA MATE.
Use your hand to cover the top of the MATE gourd, turn it over and give it a light shake.
This helps to blend and combine all the properties of the YERBA MATE.
Slide gently the YERBA MATE to one side of the gourd to create a 45° little slope.
Add a little bit of cold water into the center of the YERBA to hydrate it.
Place the bombilla into the MATE until the filter touches the bottom and the bombilla itself rests on the border of the gourd.
At this point, the water should be heated.
Transfer it into the thermos.
▶ For a sweeter, less bitter taste, add a sweetener of your choice, either to the YERBA within the gourd or to the water in the thermos.
Pour hot (not boiling) water, aiming near the bombilla that is placed in the center of the YERBA.

Now you can enjoy the tons of benefits of your MATE during the whole day!

tip: moistening your YERBA MATE with cool water before infusing with hot water will protect both flavor and nutrients.
Never put the Mate under the tap while water is running over it. Washing it this way may affect its durability, since the leather can be ruined and the ring loosened.
An excess of water may be harmful, always be very CAREFUL.
Remove the main part of the YERBA with a spoon and the rest with a napkin. The napkin will also absorb much of the moisture that remains in the gourd after using it.
Be extra CAREFUL with your Calabash gourd. If abused or dropped, small cracks may form and increase over time, leading to leaks and compromising your gourd.
Make sure to correctly dry the gourd, placing it face up in a ventilated area at an angle allowing air to freely flow to the gourd's interior.
A common mistake is to put it upside down, which may lead to the appearance of fungi.
The “Bombilla” or straw is perhaps the most sensitive part, because it is shared with others. We recommend that you clean it the regular way after each use and do a deep clean once a month: immerse the straw in boiling water with baking soda and lemon for about 30 minutes. Then scrub it with a brush.
This can be risky in winter, when flu and viruses are more common. If the MATE has not been properly cleaned, harmful agents, such as fungi and bacteria are likely to proliferate.
Furthermore, it is difficult to feel the real taste of a good MATE if the conditions are not good.
It is better to take some time to cure it and properly wash it.
