Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (PMH-APRNs) offer primary care services to the psychiatric-mental health population.

Continuing education is required in most states for standard and master aestheticians to renew their licenses. Aestheticians have the ability to continue their education through advanced courses that cover topics like chemical peels and laser treatments.

Workshops and conferences may also satisfy continuing education standards. In addition to fulfilling licensure renewal requirements, continuing education can help an aesthetician advance his or her career by learning new techniques and skills.

Michelle is a Fellow with the American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS). She has presented research on laser application in aesthetic surgery in Scotland, Texas, and Orlando.

Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox and Juvederm, has selected her to train other medical professionals. Today, Michelle does Botox injections in Orlando among several other services.

What is it that lead you to further your education and become a nurse practitioner (NP)?

I had two friends that were women’s health care NP’s and they convinced me to go through the same graduate program at Emory, though I had no obstetrics (OB) or gynecology (GYN) experience.

Are there certain things about being an NP that has been difficult that you think students should be prepared for when entering this field of aesthetic nursing?

Getting a job in the field of cosmetics is difficult. Most practices want an experienced nurse because having to train you takes a lot of time.

NP programs do not provide education in laser technology, injectables or other procedures done in a cosmetic practice. There are serious adverse events that can occur, leaving patients scarred or at a minimum, very unhappy. So a thorough understanding of each device or product you use is paramount.

How did you get into Aesthetic nursing care? Why did you choose that area of nursing?

I loved GYN but I worked far from my home and hated the commute.

I was actually looking for a similar practice, closer to home when I came across a small ad for an NP in a surgery office. I was extremely lucky. I answered the ad and one thing led to the next, and here we are some 17 years later. I worked for a renown plastic

surgeon. Laser technology was just unfolding. Injectable products were just being introduced. I was on the cutting edge of all of this and learned as the whole industry grew. Because the doctor was so well-known, every manufacturer wanted him to purchase their device so they could include this in their marketing. I was able to try out numerous devices and learn a great deal about aesthetics. I then became somewhat of an expert as well.

care I have ever had. The cosmetic industry is quite a bit different from a medical one. My skills are much more technical. A patient comes to the office and entrusts their face (other body parts as well) to me. They trust me to make a plan that will help them feel better about the aging process. Then, it is my job to decide how to achieve the results they are seeking, at an affordable price, that leaves them looking refreshed and natural. Our practice offers a full array of procedures.

I employ an aesthetician who does a variety of chemical peels, facials and uses radio frequency devices for body contouring and skin tightening for skin laxity. I perform ablative and nonablative laser procedures for wrinkle reduction as well as for textural and tone improvement, sclerotherapy for spider veins, and numerous products that are injected for wrinkle reduction, replacement of lost volume and facial contouring.

What made you have the courage to become a nurse entrepreneur?

I never planned on opening up my own practice. Things just unfolded that way. I wanted more say in what I did and more control over the hours I was working. Independence and schedule flexibility are great benefits to becoming a nurse entrepreneur.

What were some of your challenges in having your own practice?

If a student was in a situation where they were deciding on becoming either an MD or an NP, what in your experience would you tell them is the greatest differences between the two professions to help them make their decision?

Owning a practice is significantly different from being an employee. I had no idea about all of the state and federal regulations along with the numerous yearly forms that have to filled out and filed. There will always be some bumps along the way as you follow your dreams and goals.

Other than treating patients, the professions of physician and NP are vastly different. Nurses are caregivers, we educate and guide. We have the opportunity as NP’s to prescribe and manage patient care but ultimately, most NP’s have a physician that they can consult with for difficult situations.

Becoming a NP is less school and less expensive with a similar scope of practice when it’s all said and done.

What are some of the FL state requirements you had to deal with to have your own practice as an NP? Florida has its own set of unique requirements pertaining to NP practice, especially in cosmetics. We have a collaborating physician. He does not have to be on site but must be able to be reached by phone for any concerns.

He must be 25 miles or less away and in the same county. In cosmetics, he/ she must also be a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist. In other NP fields, a variety of pedigrees is allowed.

Do you have any final words of wisdom for nurses looking to go down the same NP career path? Any final thoughts for the aspiring student?

The most wonderful part of an NP career is the diversity of options available to you. There are so many avenues and choices in a vast variety of settings. The autonomy and control provided by this profession far outweigh the stress associated with achieving it.

Can you tell us a bit about what it is you do as an Aesthetics NP? Your duties along with your average work day experience?

I love what I do. But honestly, I have loved every job in direct patient 8

with the facility. An internship is a great avenue when fresh out of school.

high incidence rate of suicide in my parish. Eventually, I also want to provide mental health services in my immediate community. I plan to stay current and participate in the legislative process, to ensure the betterment of public health, particularly in our state. Alone, I cannot “save the world” but I want to contribute to making the world a better place.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I want to have my practice up and running by then, seeing patients in and out of the hospital. I also want to get into Telepsych (web therapy), really building a virtual office and having the flexibility to work from wherever I desire. There are a lot of rural areas that don’t have access to mental health care, so it will be nice to tap into that market of people through my virtual system. I have to research the licensing process and state by state authority for telehealth, but I’m starting the research process now - 5 years from now, it will hopefully be up and running.

Describe your educational journey and if you ever faced any challenges within the pursuit of your degree?

I started out as a Associates Degree in Nursing RN so after surviving that program, I thought I would never go back to school. I obtained my BSN online and that was about one year then the NP took a total of 3 years to complete.

What made you interested in starting your own business?

What was your first job as a registered nurse?

The lack of access to healthcare in my surrounding community. I am in a rural area of Louisiana and people have to drive almost 45 miles or more to obtain care. I have a mentor who has several clinics that he has opened up to help rectify the problem. He is a family medicine nurse practitioner, he saw a problem and became the answer so that’s been my motivation and inspiration with eventually becoming a nurse entrepreneur.

After graduating in December 2007, I committed to employment at a local hospital on a medicalsurgical unit. My niche was still with psychiatric nursing and I eventually knew that I would find the path to working with the mental health population.

I thought that it would be a good idea to first get more experience in a medical hospital. I also was hired for a PRN position at a long term acute care unit during my first year. After a year, I sought out a position at a local home health as the behavioral health nurse. I worked full-time for a year in this position and I saw mental health patients who required periodic visits and who were usually stable.

During my early years and my last three years of nursing, I also worked PRN at two different geriatric psychiatric units.

What are your final words of wisdom?

If you care about people and love helping others, and really want to see them get better, then nursing is perfect for you. If you’re just looking at the pay, you may want to look into something else. You won’t get any true fulfillment out of life until you know that you have helped someone else. Mental health nursing is full of opportunities, it’s an area that is very short staff and highly underrated. If you find what you love doing, you will never feel like you are working a day of your life. You have to tap into what you are passionate about and if you work in that area of nursing, you will never feel the burn.

What are your plans now that you have graduated from NP school?

I will start working for a group medical practice, building my own client list within the group setting. I will have my own office and patient care load. They have a relationship with the outpatient mental health unit, so I will see the new referrals and really build my foundation. They gave me the opportunity after graduation because I interned 9

Nursing burnout by definition is when nurses are emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted. Nursing is a stressful and demanding profession. Many nurses and nursing students can experience this feeling of burnout because of the rigor and intensity of their work or program. While nursing burnout may be a reality for some, it doesn’t have to define your career. Learning the warning signs of nursing burnout is the cure to preventing it and letting it destroy your nursing career.

Learning how to spot nurse burnout early is one of the best ways to prevent the problem from spreading. There are several warning signs to look out for that really helps you before the burn takes you out.

• Headaches, muscle tension, neck or back pain • Upset stomach • Chest pains, rapid heartbeat • Fatigue • Memory problems or forgetfulness So when things aren’t going your way, or you feel like you are losing control and overwhelmed, pay attention to the severe warning signs listed below as well. They are just some of the ways that your body is telling you it needs maintenance and extra care.

• Physical fatigue • Diminished focus

How to help avoid nurse burnout • Take regular breaks - Nurses are often their own worst enemy, working tirelessly throughout the day.

Some causes of Nurse Burnout Shift work - Not an issue exclusively faced by nurses but a significant one nevertheless.

Being Selfless - Nurses tend to place others before themselves, and many feel like it’s a calling.

Workloads - It is a very busy, high-stress environment where patients are becoming more complex.

Coping with constant sickness and death - A nurses occupational hazard? Much of the emotional aspect of nursing burnout can result from daily exposure to ill and dying patients.

• Accept your limitations and others - Control the controllable and learn to let go what you cannot control.

• It’s ok to be selfish sometimes - Learn to place yourself first, patients and families need you but you have to give to yourself first.

• Perhaps a change in specialty might help!

There is not an industry nursing has not created a lane. Nurses are everywhere - literally!
