METHOD Preheat the oven to 190*C and grease a large baking try. Mash the pumpkin up finely along with the mixed spice, add the egg and yoghurt and stir to combine. Place the scone mix into a mixing bowl, cut the butter into cubes and then rub the butter into the scone mix by hand. Add the pumpkin mixture to the scone mix and cut the mixture together using a knife until combined. (Do not over mix.). Gently press the dough flat (2cm in height) on a lightly floured surface. Cut into rounds with a cookie cutter/cup and place the scones, 5cm apart, on the greased baking tray. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with butter, jam, cheese and whipped cream N.B. Baking instructions are a guideline only. Baking times and quantity may vary depending on appliance temperatures and size/shape of scone.

The Madikwe Reserve is saturated in history and maintains the feeling of new discovery around every rock outcrop, grassy hill, and Acacia tree. The majestic Madikwe reserve is nestled between the southern border of Botswana and the Molatedi Dam in South Africa. It is named for the Marico River Basin that makes up the area. Local people had called this area home for thousands of years. Later, hunters, farmer, explorers, and adventure seekers traversed this region in the early 1800’s. With other options available, it was decided by the government that the most practical use of the land that is now the Madikwe Reserve, be utilized for eco-tourism and conservation. Allowing the natural flora and fauna to take over again, the reserve became a positive upliftment of communities in the area. In 1991 it became an established reserve. Slowly, professional field researchers began reintroducing small herds of animals such as Cape Buffalo, Elephants, and Rhino. The reintroduction of predatorial animals was underway shortly after. Madikwe is a prime wildlife reserve safari destination with a choice of excellent accommodation venues. It is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa; besides many other wildlife species, the Big 5 can also be found in the reserve. Accommodation in Madikwe is mainly in luxury private game lodges rated 5 and 4 stars and is of the highest standard.
Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are situated on their own private game reserve which covers 12500 acres of pristine Waterberg bushveld. The reserve is made out of 12 different ecological zones from open grassy plains to thick montane bush to savannah bushveld. Since the Waterberg lies on an intercontinental divergence zone we have a wider variety of flora and fauna than elsewhere in Africa. The diverse topography of the reserve also enables us to naturally sustain over 40 species of game including giraffe, white rhino, sable antelope, Roan antelope, buffalo, nyala, gemsbok (Oryx), kudu, Livingstone eland, blue wildebeest (gnu), red hartebeest, zebra, impala, bushbuck, duiker, steenbuck, mountain reedbuck, waterbuck, warthog, blesbuck, baboons, bushpig, klipspringer, leopard, jackal, brown hyena, caracal, civet and genet to name but a few. For those of you who are passionate about birds, there are well over 300 species of resident and migrant birds. Guests are always welcome to join in on any management activities on the reserves such as game capture and relocation, treating injured animals, burning firebreaks, game census on horseback etc. Sable antelope are today one of the most conservation dependant specie in South Africa and rarely seen in any National park. We started with a small core herd in 2001 and today have a successful, well established and viable breeding herd.
Gauteng - South Africa
Stretching all the way from Pretoria in the north to Vereeniging in the south, Gauteng (Sotho for place of gold, although the ‘gaut’ is also thought to originate from the Dutch ‘goud’ for gold) was created by the ANC in 1994 after the country’s first all-race elections, uniting six regions, including part of the old Transvaal province, into what might be the smallest South African province, but serves as the gateway into Africa. Whilst Gautengs history lies embedded in the discovery of gold, today Gauteng not only has one of the best infrastructures, but its population of over 9 million people form part of a vibrant mix of energy and diversity that make it one of the wealthiest provinces in Africa, and the entertainment epicentre of South Africa. The energy of the Highveld, with its intense summers broken only by intermittent electric storms, is echoed in the sheer buzz of the place. In Johannesburg people walk and talk fast, they drive at high speed too, and the ever increasing skyline as glass and chrome structures rise like mushrooms seemingly overnight - reflects the rapid development that has taken place in the city in the last 10 years. There is more to Gauteng than the art of business and money-making. The Johannesburg Metro and the City of Pretoria - the two major cities in Gauteng - are diametrically opposed, and Pretoria provides a more laidback, gentrified alternative - its jacaranda lined, wide streets and lovely old buildings a more sedate choice for many who readily make the daily commute to Johannesburg. The Vaal River, which separates Gauteng from the Free State, provides a number of avenues of escape; the Magaliesberg Mountains, virtually on Johannesburg’s doorstep, another effortless flight into days of heady blue quiet spaces; and Limpopo - just to the north of Gauteng, with its allure of game reserves, waterfalls, forests and streams - one more escape of note. Whilst the region around the city of Johannesburg is incredibly ancient and includes the discovery of a 3½ million-year-old Australopithecus africanus in a cave near Sterkfontein, just outside Jozi, the city’s exciting history began only in 1886 with the discovery of gold and the Witwatersrand reef. It didn’t take long for the population of the city to explode from a few shanties into what became, and has remained, the largest city in South Africa. Today Johannesburg is one of the world’s youngest major cities and the powerhouse of the African continent.

There is a first time for everything. With this festival taking place for the first time, we are planning on making it a great success and an annual event.
Barry Hilton`s one-man show, Evolver, on Monday 18 & Tuesday 19 September 2017, 8.30pm at the historical landmark, The Pumphouse at the V&A Waterfront.
The Brandewyn and Boerewors Festival will be held on the 23rd of September 2017 at Hillcrest Quarry (Durbanville).
Dinner from 6pm, when doors open, and last meal orders 7.30pm. The show is 75 minutes and there is no interval or service during show.
We will be having brandy tastings stalls, a brandy bar, as well as food stalls and a designated area where guests can buy and braai their own meats. We will also be having live performances throughout the day by Sunset Sweatshop and Nicholis Louw.

The islands of Maldives appear in-between the trading route of the Indian Ocean. Thus settlers, and visitors from neighbouring regions and around the world have come in contact with the islands for as long as history has been recorded. Such is the to-and-fro flow of people and their cultures, that a marked effect has been left in the Maldivian people, the language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes. The looks of the Maldivian people may differ from one atoll to the other, attributing to the genes passed on by South and Southeast Asians, Africans, and Arabians. The language, Dhivehi, differs in dialect in some regions in the south of Maldives, possibly due to the secluded nature and subsistent ways of island life. Maldivian beliefs have been very much based around religion and superstition, often used together in matters of significance but given separate positions in society. In matters of faith, Islam dominates, but influence of the supernatural still continues to play a major role in most island communities, possibly giving credit to the folklores and Buddhist traditions of the islands’ first settlers before conversion to Islam in 1153 AD. The mixing of cultures is very much seen in Maldivian arts. The music played with the local bodu-beru (bigdrum) resemble that of African drumming. The dhoni (a unique Maldivian sailboat) is an art form itself built with skilled craftsmanship, with significant similarities to the Arabian dows. The fine artistry of Maldivians, seen in the intricate details on wooden beams in antique mosques, represents what we have gained from Southeast Asian architecture. Then there is the undefined: the distinct geometric designs used in mats woven from local materials, the embroidered neckline of women’s traditional dresses and their ornaments too, expose another story brought in from an unknown culture that has seeped in to Maldivian society. Maldivians are quite open to adaptation and are generally welcoming to outside inspiration. The culture has always continued to evolve with the times. Locals still eat fish and fishermen still spend days out at sea, but tourism now takes a standing prominence. Most Maldivians still want to believe in upholding unity and oneness in faith, but recent waves of reform in the country have created a whole new culture of new ideas and attitudes. The effects of the modern world are now embraced, while still striving to uphold the people’s identity, traditions and beliefs.
