Marataba Safari Lodge’s addition to the award-winning MORE portfolio launches a major new attraction in experiential game viewing and trail walking in South Africa. Located in the centre of Marakele Game Reserve in Limpopo’s historic Waterberg range, Marataba offers Big Five game viewing amidst a wealth of crystal-clear rivers, pools, waterfalls and verdant mountain terrain. The property links MORE’s circuit of 5-star game lodges east and west of the country. In the Lowveld, Lion Sands Game Reserve is unique in operating in both the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Wildtuin. In the North West’s Kalahari thornveld, MORE manages the upgraded Madikwe Safari Lodge in what is becoming a world renowned safari experience. Marataba Safari Lodge was recently acquired by a consortium of Dutch families in a deal worth R200m, an initiative aimed at supporting safari tourism. MORE was invited to manage this project on the basis of its leading role in experiential safari tourism in tandem with conservation and community development. MORE CEO Robert More calls the investment far-sighted, in an area of South Africa which has largely been overlooked. Marataba is perfectly placed for the tourism market in Gauteng, 250km driving distance from Johannesburg on the N1 through Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) to Thabazimbi. Hollywood’s vision of the ultimate big-game experience was defined by the Oscar-winning Out Of Africa, in which Robert Redford romanced Meryl Streep around the campfire in front of large, elegant safari tents. That setting anticipated Marataba’s unique advantages in today’s tourism market. Says Robert More: “Marataba is a great opportunity to meet the growing demand for experiential tourism. It is malaria free, breathtakingly scenic and ideally suited for today’s photographic safaris. The Lodge comprises 15 luxury tents in an exclusive 23,000 hectare reserve. It will pair well with Madikwe Safari Lodge to the west, creating the ultimate family safari circuit. . MORE’s reputation as a pace-setter for the increasing concern about wildlife conservation is shown on its www.morehotels.co.za website. Its photo galleries are packed with high-quality visuals of wildlife taken by guests and rangers on its properties, on game drives and walking trails, and from its lodges and signature treehouses. These images feature in top travel publications and in blogs and websites online, emphasising how tourism must now be geared to conservation and community development to ensure its sustainability. The demand for more trained field rangers means that MORE will relocate its training school from Lion Sands to Marataba, where there greater scope for expansion to meet the increasing demand in the safari business. Says Robert More: “It’s important to be proactive in our tourism industry. MORE does continuous research with its visitors domestically and internationally to find out what they want from their safari stays. Lion Sands and Madikwe have their own unique, world class resources which we are constantly developing. The reason we have invested in Marataba is that is in one of the country’s most spectacular game reserves, and it offers us a wealth of fabulous game tourism advantages that we will develop.”

Exec Chef John Carelse I started my culinary career in 1987, I started my apprenticeship with renowned Chef Ryner Poewe at The Paradys Kloof Restaurant in Stellenbosch. I soon developed a keen skill and worked my way up the ranks. I got my first Head Chef position in 1994 at a small family style restaurant on the Welmoed Wine Estate in Stellenbosch where I also did a short wine paring course. I spent most of my early years of in the Western Cape working for some wellknown establishments such as De Ouwe Werf Country Inn in Stellenbosch and La Masson De Chamonix in Franchhoek, From there I relocated to the Eastern Cape and most recently to the North West Provence at Tau Game Lodge a 5 star lodge situated on Madikwe Game Reserve.

Sensitive to ocean mammals www.whitepearlresorts.com White Pearl Resorts offers small-group experiences ,If you have ever had the privilege of witnessing that lazy fin lifting out of the water and then flopping down again; and a few minutes later seeing a huge tail flapping above the level of the ocean, then you‟ll appreciate the thrill of whale watching. It‟s so close to a spiritual experience that it can bring a tear to the most hardened eye. To ensure a truly memorable close-up and personal encounter with this giant mammal of the seas, White Pearl Resorts, Ponta Mamoli, on the coast of Mozambique, has introduced whale watching from a private boat that launches a few steps away from this five-star luxury hotel that has a sophisticated yet laidback philosophy. There is neither the need to drive to a popular tourist venue nor to be squashed in with many other travellers – White Pearl Resorts‟ guests can enjoy the ultimate authentic adventure with a knowledgeable guide who will fill enquiring minds with interesting facts about the physical aspects and behavioural patterns of the whales of this region. They include the Southern Right and the Humpback whales; the latter being more prolific. If you spot a stream of spray rising three to four metres into the air it is sure to be a Humpback. This whale breathes through two blow holes located on the top of its head. They weigh up to 45 tons, can remain submerged for up to 30 minutes and are able to dive to depths of 200 metres. However, remember it‟s not only the whales that offer an invigorating activity. Swimming with the dolphins at Ponto D‟Ouro is another fulfilling experience – and again, at White Pearl Resorts, guests are assured a personalised encounter, riding in a boat that transports only the hotel‟s guests. White Pearl Resorts‟ management team is on a quest to offer guests the most authentic, unusual and inspirational experiences that will live in their memories for a lifetime.

Our interest in the wild dog is two-fold. Firstly: the wild dog is South Africa’s most endangered carnivore and the second most endangered in Africa after the Ethiopian wolf. The current population of wild dogs in South Africa is estimated at less than 400. Often seen as a pest and threat to be eliminated, the plight of the wild dog has received scant public attention. We recognise that there is urgent need to support efforts to safeguard the future of this unique animal and we are pleased to be part of it.

Wild Dog

Secondly: the wild dog embodies characteristics that Investec espouses - it is a distinctive, tenacious and collegial animal. Due to unique patterns on their coats, every wild dog is an individual. Yet together they form formidable packs of expert hunters with a legendary teamwork ethic. It is said that close to every wild dog hunt is successful. The EWT launched the research project to obtain long term information on the population, habitat and prey selections and also to identify the threats facing the wild dogs in the Kruger National Park. The first phase of the project involved a survey of the western boundary of the park to assess how far wild dogs occur outside the Kruger, and the second phase involves intensive surveying and monitoring of the dogs inside the park. The park has been divided into three study zones, north, central and south. Some of the field work includes collaring of wild dogs with hightech GPS collars, investigating feeding ecology and conducting genetic studies.

Physical Characteristics The African wild dog is long-legged, with massive jaws and very large, erect batlike ears. Although it resembles some domestic dogs, it differs in that it has four toes on each foot instead of five. The Latin name for the African wild dog means “painted wolf, which aptly describes the colorful coat of dark brown, black and yellow patches. Wild dogs have bushy tails with white tips that may serve as a flag to keep the pack in contact while hunting Habitat Wild dogs live mostly in arid zones and in the savanna. They also are found in woodland and montane habitats where their prey lives. Behavior Wild dogs live in packs of six to 20. If the pack numbers fall below six, hunting efficiency is eroded. The dogs have a peculiar rather playful ceremony that bonds them for a common purpose and initiates each hunt. They start circulating among the other pack members, vocalizing and touching until they get excited and are ready to hunt. They start the hunt in an organized, cooperative manner. When prey is targeted, some of the dogs run close to the animal, while others follow behind, taking over when the leader tired. They can run long distances, at speeds up to about 35 miles per hour. Of the large carnivores, wild dogs are the most efficient hunters – targeted prey rarely escapes. They tear the flesh until the animal falls, consuming even if it is still alive. This behavior may prejudice people against them, although in reality it may be no worse than the prolonged kills of other carnivores. Apart from its undeniable bloodiness, the remarkable aspect of the their hunting is the complete lack of aggression toward each other. Wild dogs have a social hierarchy but unlike many other social animals, there is little obvious intimidation. They have elaborate greeting rituals, accompanied by twittering and whining. Their large range of vocalizations includes a short bark of alarm, a rallying howl and a bell-like contact call that can be heard over long distances.

Diet They usually hunt in the early morning and again in late evening, prettying on gazelles and other antelopes, warthogs, wildebeests calves and rat and birds. They may raid domestic stock, but as wild dogs seldom stay in one place for long, this damage is not extensive Caring for the Young A nuclear pack of about six dogs usually consists of one dominant breeding pair and several nonbreeding adult male helpers. Occasionally another female in the pack forms a subordinate breeding pair with one of the other males. A breeding female gives birth about once a year, with litters averaging about 10 pups, thought as many as 19 have been recorded. They pups are born in a shelter of thick bush or grass, or in a hole. Usually twice as many males are born. Unlike many other species, the female offspring leave the natal group when they reach maturity, not the males. The hunting members of the pack return to the den where they regurgitate meat for the nursing female and pups. Although litters are very large, very few pups survive. Sometimes the dens are flooded, or the pups die from exposure or disease. When pack numbers are reduced, hunting is not as efficient and adults may not bring back sufficient food for the pups. The entire pack is involved in the welfare of the pups; both males and females babysit the young and provide food for them.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve, one of South Africa‟s foremost Big 5 malaria-free reserves, was envisaged not by conservationists, but by economists. They found conservation would create more income and jobs than the existing land-use, which was cattlefarming. This successful reserve is now a model that has inspired South African conservation. Madikwe Game Reserve, right up against the Botswana border in the North West province, is a strange anomaly in the world of conservation. It was transformed from a number of low-yield cattle farms to a high yield conservation area. This was not land chosen by ecologists for its rare vegetation or animals. It was chosen by economists because they found a game reserve here would generate more jobs and money than any other land use option, and is now a model of what the benefits of conservation can be. Another remarkable factor is that this was pioneered in 1991, within one of South Africa‟s apartheid-era Bantustans – Bophuthatswana – which was reintegrated into the country in 1994. Bop Parks, as it was then called, created an initiative where the state would manage the land and wildlife, the private sector would profit through game lodges, and the surrounding community would benefit through sustainable jobs and income. On paper it seemed idealistic. Yet in practice it worked. Bop Parks launched Operation Phoenix in 1991. By 1997, it had brought in more than 8 000 individual animals, the largest translocation of its kind in the world. Several private companies set up very successful bush lodges within the 75 000 hectare park. And the 3 villages around Madikwe – Supingstad, Lekgophung and Molatedi – are doing very well. Women are particularly empowered – a high proportion of them are employed in the park. Social and financial upliftment aside, Madikwe is now better known as one of the best places to see the Big 5, and it also has the advantage of being malaria free. Madikwe is seen as a model of the benefits conservation can bring. You may not be in an exclusive private game reserve (it's actually a provincial game reserve), but you‟ll feel as if you are – the experience is almost indistinguishable. The only difference is that you might catch a special sense of pride from some of the people you encounter in and around the park.

The super-regional 76,000sqm Cradlestone Mall is set to open its doors in Mogale City on 20 November 2013, with more than 200 stores offering unparalleled choice to shoppers, both local and from further afield. Developed by Sasol Pension Fund, Pivotal Property Fund and Retail Africa, the mall is located at the intersection of the N14/R28 highways and busy Hendrik Potgieter Road, west of Johannesburg. Signed-up anchor tenants include Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Game, Dion Wired and the Edcon Group. “Major retailers were quick to seize the opportunity,” says Andries Schaap, General Manager Investment from Sasol Pension Fund. “The mall is positioned to attract middle- to high-income shoppers from neighbouring Krugersdorp, Roodepoort and Randpark Ridge – but also from North-West Province and even cross-border shoppers from Botswana.” In addition to national retailers, Cradlestone Mall offers specialty retailers like MBW Art West Rand and Apadana Rugs; and a diverse restaurant and fast food component, including Menchies, The Raj Express and Doppio Zero. A Food Lover‟s Market and Dischem are scheduled to open in early 2014. Access and parking have been priorities for the developers, with a focus on „pop-in‟ shopping for food and services, as well as longer shopping trips. “With easy commute times from the north and north-west suburbs, Cradlestone Mall has been designed to offer a range of shopping options for our consumers,” he adds. To ensure maximum accessibility, the developers invested R60 million widening Hendrik Potgieter leading to the intersection, as well as upgrading the interchange at the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and the R28. “Cradlestone Mall not only enjoys exceptional visibility from these major roads and highways, but we have also worked hard to ensure the mall is easily accessible to shoppers,” says Schaap. The mall offers 4,500 convenient parking bays.
