We are helping pediatric care reach new heights. Recent growth at Children’s Hospital Colorado created new opportunities for St. Anthony Health Foundation to make a big impact on the community and the state. St. Anthony Hospital’s Flight For Life Colorado program has supported Children’s Hospital Colorado since 1997. They have provided critical care transport for young patients, including the use of fixed wing aircraft, helicopters and ground ambulances in addition to all the support, pilots and maintenance required for each. “Children’s Hospital Colorado fields a team of nurses and respiratory therapists and we provide the transportation modes, drivers and pilots,” explained Kathy Mayer, MS, RN and Program Director for Flight For Life Colorado. But now, Children’s Hospital has expanded and created a robust network of care, including 11 facilities in the metro area and some beyond. They need to coordinate transportation between all these facilities to 4,500 patients a year.
“Historically, these inter-facility transports were contracted out to a private ambulance provider,” Kathy said. “But Children’s wanted to bring it in house and have our joined teams provide this service. They asked Flight For Life Colorado to consider adding Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support ambulance transportation to our collaboration with them.” Kathy said that Centura Health and Flight For Life Colorado spent a year looking at this request from every angle and determined it was something they wanted very much to do. Continued from page 1 “St. Anthony Health Foundation donors covered all the capital equipment purchases for two new ambulances including monitors, stretchers, IV pumps, and anything else that was needed,” she explained. “It was a significant amount, over $300,000, and it was absolutely key to getting this new program up and running.” The new partnership began this past August with one ambulance working 24 hours a day and another working during peak hours 12 hours a day. Each has an EMT and paramedic.
A Healthy, Successful Year. With your help, we are putting the health back into health care at St. Anthony Hospital and in our community. We are working hard to help you stay well as long as possible, and to make sure we are ready when you really need us. Your generosity has made so much possible: • 370 families were served by our Nurse Family Partnership, where nurses coach low-income, first-time moms about how to raise a thriving baby; • 100 local seniors learned how to avoid falling, which is the number one injury seen among this group in our ER each year; • More than 10,000 people learned how to avoid injury and were offered new helmets; • Three neighborhood health centers opened in Golden, Arvada and Belmar to provide primary and preventive care, alongside urgent/emergency care; • 202 patients were discharged with medication they could not otherwise afford; • 11,781 patients were admitted to the hospital; • 60,582 patients visited the ER; • and 4,000 patients were flown by Flight For Life, when minutes truly mattered. “September 2016 was our first full month of service,” Kathy said. “We transported 194 patients and met our response time parameter of 60 minutes or less 99.5% of the time. That many patients in just one month shows what a huge need there was for this service and we’re very proud of how successfully we have filled this niche.” Kathy said they are still adding staff and are being very selective. “Transferring pediatric patients is not the right fit for every EMT or paramedic,” she said. “We want people who know how to engage with these young patients and their parents. One of the great things about our collaboration is that our EMTs and paramedics are able to take advantage of the educational offerings at Children’s Hospital Colorado.” St. Anthony Health Foundation and Flight For Life Colorado also have big news for early 2017. “We are going to unveil a brand new helicopter dedicated to Children’s Hospital Colorado,” Kathy said. “It will be configured for the needs of newborn and young children and is a different model than the other Flight For Life helicopters, allowing for more room and better access to little patients.” St. Anthony Health Foundation is covering the capital for this new helicopter, as well. They are helping to purchase an isolette, monitors, ventilators, helmets for flight crews, night vision goggles, infusion pumps and more. Capital for the helicopter is about $400,000. “We would truly not be able to help so many young patients if it weren’t for our donors and their generosity,” Kathy said. “This is significantly changing the level of care for pediatric patients who need to be transported.”
