WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES At Tyler, you’ll have the space, technology and tools to go wherever your creative vision takes you. You’ll have access to studios, collaborative maker spaces, lecture halls, our green courtyard, an academic advising center, cafe and exhibition spaces—all constructed with a sharp focus on environmental sustainability and safety. Tyler’s Landscape Architecture and Horticulture programs are based at Temple’s suburban Ambler Campus that includes greenhouses, a 187-acre arboretum and more.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY Tyler’s position within Temple University—a large, vibrant, urban research university with hundreds of academic programs—gives you access to a vast array of resources and opportunities. CERAMICS

From the cups we drink from to the homes we live in, the technology in our pockets and the ground that supports us, we touch clay many times a day. It serves many purposes and can be formed to resemble nearly anything. What will you say with it? In Tyler’s Ceramics program, you’ll be welcomed into a diverse community of thinkers and makers who challenge traditional processes in a forward-looking way. Led by a faculty of practicing artists in stateof-the-art facilities, you’ll work side-by-side with graduate students as you explore both traditional and experimental clay techniques. You’ll develop technical skills—from shaping the material to learning about its chemistry—and learn about the history of ceramics, while being challenged to consider how your work relates to your lived experience. The program draws on the energy and resources of Philadelphia—a city with longstanding clay and craft traditions—to forge community partnerships that lead to broader, inclusive perspectives, conversations and exchanges of ideas, setting the stage for many professional pathways.

The Fibers & Material Studies program introduces students to a bold, interdisciplinary approach to the exploration of one of the world’s oldest and most accessible traditions: working with fibers. Through traditional techniques, such as weaving, sewing and embroidery, as well as the most contemporary digital technologies, you’ll explore the expressive potential and social meaning of fiber materials. You’ll learn conceptual and technical skills that prepare you for focused, graduate-level study and careers in the arts, design and other creative fields.

As a Fibers & Material Studies Major, you’ll join a close-knit, inclusive community led by a strong, diverse faculty that pushes students to experiment and collaborate. Glass students join a welcoming, high-energy community of artists and educators who work in unparalleled, professionally equipped studios that provide opportunities to learn the full range of glass processes: glass blowing, hot casting, kiln casting, flame working, performance and more. In addition to learning traditional and innovative techniques, you’ll examine the history and chemistry of glass. Our program emphasizes the development of a collaborative community where genuine teamwork is required to create artwork, run the studios and participate in Tyler Glass traditions from Blow-a-thons to “Pumpkinferno,” our annual Halloween celebration. You’ll also play an essential role by helping to oversee the studios—a significant responsibility here and an opportunity to see firsthand what a practicing artist’s career is like.

METALS/ JEWELRY/ CAD-CAM Our pioneering Metals/Jewelry/CAD-CAM program was the first to introduce computer-aided design and computeraided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) in crafts media. As a student, you’ll learn both traditional techniques and cutting-edge digital practices and theory in jewelry, metals, computer-aided design and 3D printing. The program is recognized as a national leader in the discipline because it offers students access to world-class facilities, emergent technology, faculty mentors and connections across the industry. You’ll graduate with a broad base of knowledge, critical thinking skills and the technical proficiency needed for success in the jewelry industry, your artistic practice or top graduate schools. PAINTING

Tyler’s painting courses go beyond the physical medium to engage students as critical changemakers in the contemporary art world. Classes are situated in spacious, light-filled studios that allow you to make work at any scale. A diverse faculty—all of whom are practicing artists and theorists themselves—are your mentors. You’ll learn in individual and collaborative studio work, group and individual critiques, and through contact with Philadelphia’s diverse communities of artists, art collectives and museums. PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographic images are central in our culture. Photographers are artists, reporters, scientists, historians, storytellers, spies and explorers. As a photography student at Tyler, you’ll learn both the art and science of the discipline, as well as its history, contemporary critical trends and theories of the medium. PRINTMAKING

As a Tyler printmaking student, you’ll join a welcoming, collaborative community of artists and educators who are bridging tradition and innovation. Working side-by-side with professors and graduate students, you’ll explore the full range of printmaking techniques— from traditional print processes such as intaglio, relief, lithography, monoprint, letterpress, book arts and screen printing to the latest digital technologies. Philadelphia is a vibrant art center with a strong printmaking tradition and many arts organizations that offer opportunities for internships and jobs. Here you’ll explore the finest museum collections and gallery exhibitions and become part of the creative community.

To be a student of sculpture is to be a student of possibilities. Defined by neither form nor material, contemporary sculpture can be nearly anything, allowing you to shape and define your personal vision and social practice as an artist. GRAPHIC & INTERACTIVE DESIGN Graphic and interactive design is the communication of information and ideas through visual language. At Tyler, you’ll learn how to develop design concepts, make images, work with typography and master a wide range of new and traditional media to serve commerce, culture and the public good. Known for its rigor, Tyler’s Graphic & Interactive Design program emphasizes creative intelligence and skill. You’ll be evaluated by the exacting standards of the design profession, preparing you to hit the ground running in an array of careers. BFA WITH ART EDUCATION CONCENTRATION

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with Art Education Concentration is an option for studio art majors to earn K–12 art teaching certification in Pennsylvania. This pathway allows you to combine your passion for the arts with your desire to inspire and educate others. Your course of study will involve completion of a studio art degree in any of Tyler’s nine undergraduate BFA majors, supplemented by a year of additional courses in education and a student teaching experience.

Good architecture is necessary for healthy, safe and livable communities. Tyler’s program focuses on design that addresses culture, technology and stewardship of the built and natural environment. Through the guidance of a faculty of design practitioners and innovative researchers, you’ll use the diverse urban context of Philadelphia to understand advocacy and civic engagement, technology, sustainable futures and the global context of architectural design. The program prepares you for the NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture professional degree program and a wide variety of creative career pathways in built environment design such as sustainable design, design-build, urban design, community-based design and design for health.

Facilities management is a fast-growing profession that integrates people, place, process and technology to ensure efficient function of the built environment. With a curriculum that spans the university, you’ll take courses in building technology, architectural history, real estate, business, human resource management, contract and more to prepare you for leadership in this field. The core of the program takes place in Tyler’s Facilities Management Lab, where you’ll simulate real-world interdisciplinary collaboration. Lessons learned in the classroom are implemented through facilities planning projects. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with professionals across the city and region, building a strong professional network. The Bachelor of Science in Facilities Management is accredited by the Applied and Natural Sciences Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Historic preservation is an ideal pathway for students with a strong interest in applied historical research about architecture, buildings and sites. You’ll learn the fundamentals of historic and cultural preservation practice in the United States and be introduced to the range of approaches and methods around the world. Students are guided by practicing architects, historians and preservationists, conducting archival and on-site investigations into the material and cultural fabric of the built environment in the Philadelphia region. The flexible curriculum allows you to incorporate coursework from related disciplines across Temple University.

Guided by faculty who are committed to urban art education and the power of collaborating with communities, Tyler’s art education students don’t just learn how to teach art and grow as artists—they learn how to affect positive change in the communities where they work. Tyler provides two pathways to earn an art teaching certification in Pennsylvania and become a teaching artist in grades K–12. • The Bachelor of Science in Education in Art Education, a rigorous, well-rounded, personal and communitybased program that encompasses your artistic practice and the necessary training to succeed as a teacher and affect positive change in the communities where you work. Graduates have a high job placement rate in K-12 schools and other community sites. • The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Art Education Concentration, a degree pathway that allows you to combine your passion for the arts with your desire to inspire and educate others. ART HISTORY

How can an object made thousands of years ago help us understand the society from which it came? How do artists working today shape our understanding of the world we live in now? As an art history student, you’ll learn how to study art objects as a means of understanding the history of cultures in a global context. You’ll look closely, think critically and conduct original research about works of art. The program is designed to encourage a lifelong understanding of art as a fundamental form of human expression. Because the Art History program is part of an art school rather than being housed in a liberal arts college—which is the more typical structure of many programs—our students have access to opportunities for studio work as well as outstanding research resources. The program’s expanded classroom includes the culturally rich array of museums, galleries, public art and other resources in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C., opportunities to study abroad and a sophisticated and ever-evolving array of new digital technologies. Our students find jobs in museums, galleries, libraries, auction houses and publishers and earn placements in the most competitive graduate programs.

ART THERAPY

If you are creative, compassionate and enjoy helping others, art therapy may be the field for you. Art therapists support individuals and communities by enhancing self-esteem, building insight, promoting emotional resilience and resolving distress. Tyler’s Art Therapy program will prepare you for careers that integrate mental health, human services and the creative process. Through the program’s emphasis on interdisciplinary study, community fieldwork and self-exploration, you’ll learn the skills of communication and collaboration, cultural awareness, creative design and planning, observation, and research, which will prepare you for a range of careers. While a master’s degree is required to practice as a certified art therapist, Tyler’s undergraduate degree program provides strong preparation for pursuing studies in art therapy at the graduate level.

VISUAL STUDIES

The Visual Studies program is ideal for socially conscious artists who want to utilize the resources of a larger research university while accessing the historic studio traditions of Tyler. The Visual Studies program will help you become a stronger thinker and writer while supporting your growth as an artist. You’ll earn half of your credits in studio art classes and the other half exploring a broad array of courses in art history, anthropology, psychology, film and media studies, and other disciplines. You’ll learn to analyze wide-ranging forms of visual communication and convey your ideas using tools drawn from a variety of disciplines, from sociology and science to aesthetics and economics.

Exposure to different cultures and philosophies is particularly encouraged at Tyler. Studying abroad supports students’ development of problem-solving skills, language skills, self-confidence and the ability to adapt to new environments. Tyler students may study for a semester or year at Temple’s campuses in Tokyo and Rome, and at other programs around the world.


TEMPLE UNIVERSITY ROME Temple Rome uses the city of Rome as a living classroom. Art history is taught through direct observation of original works and historic sites, from ancient to modern. Painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture classes are held in well-equipped studios. The incredibly rich architectural heritage of Rome provides unique opportunities to study architecture and landscape architecture. Students may also elect to take courses in Italian language, anthropology, history or literature, among many others. You’ll engage in lively discussions with students from all over the world and strengthen your voice and practice.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, JAPAN CAMPUS The oldest and largest foreign university in Japan, Temple Japan offers intensive training in art, design and architecture. The faculty gives special attention to each student in small classes, driven by lively discussions with an interdisciplinary lens. You’ll collaborate with bilingual students from over 60 countries and study global and social issues. Excursions to cities like Kyoto will immerse you in Japan’s rich culture, language and history.
