Op ’n vraag aan Van den Heever oor hoe sy en Minette gevoel het toe hulle besef Shana het hulle “gehoor”, het sy gesê dat hulle albei verstom was. “Sy het haar boeke voor ons voete kom neersit en die hele projek gekaap. Sy het my telefonies gereeld gekontak omdat ek, Beulah en Jana volgens haar draai met die amptelike briewe na die skole. Haar oortjies is fyn en haar hart groot om ’n verskil te wil maak. Sy het ook nog voor ek Eversdal kon kontak, genoeg potlode en uit-

veërs vir ’n hele klas binne die eerste week bymekaar gemaak,” vertel Van den Heever. Shana het tot op hede al 120 boeke vir die ouderdomsgroep 6 tot 14 jaar en 30 potlode en uitveërs na Loxton gestuur. Die projek is nog steeds aan die gang by die Laerskool Eversdal en skenkings word verwelkom. Die hoogtepunt van Shana se insamelingsveldtog vind op Maandag 12 September plaas, wanneer die bekende skrywer Deon Meyer die ander skenkings persoonlik by die Laerskool Eversdal in ontvangs sal neem. VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1 Volgens Van den Heever het hulle al so baie boeke ontvang dat hulle nou ’n nuwe biblioteek kan begin. Sy het ook vir RSG gekontak en hulle van Shana se inisiatief gesê. Amoré Bekker, omroeper van RSG, het Shana gekontak en ’n onderhoud met haar gevoer. Bekker noem haar die “kleinlyfie” wat glo in spoed en aksie. Die brand by die plaasskool het ontstaan nadat drie laerskoolleerders by die skool se administratiewe gebou probeer inbreek het om by die skool se snoepie in te breek. “Die Noord-Kaap se onderwysdepartement het by ’n openbare vergadering aan die ouers beloof dat ’n nuwe skool gebou sal word, maar dit sal nie binne die volgende twee tot drie jaar gebeur nie. Tans word die leerders in drie tydelike opslaanklasse onderrig. Ons wag nog vir drie opslaanklasse, maar het genoeg banke en stoele. Ons grootste probleem is tans die tekort aan handboeke,” het Van den Heever gesê. Die Loxtonskoukomitee kon vir elke onderwyser een handboek vir elke vak gee en die Ek Leef-trust het skryfbehoeftes en skryfboeke verskaf. “Sanlam het boekrakke geskenk

en die Christelike lektuurfonds gaan ons help met ’n intervensie-program oor sosiale kwessies en ook leesstof en Kinderbybels skenk. “NB-uitgewers het meer as 300 nuwe boeke geskenk en in die Kaap word skenkings by Eversdal afgelewer,” het sy gesê. Ander behoeftes op Loxton sluit in babaklere vir die kliniek en toiletware vir die kinders. Om al die boeke te akkommodeer, het sy ook ’n skeepshouer nodig vir ’n tydelike biblioteek en sal só ’n skenking waardeer. Van den Heever het ten slotte gesê dat Shana en die twee La Rochelleleerders ’n groot verskil gemaak het, want die La Rochelle-leerders het tot dusver 2 000 boeke ingesamel. Deon Meyer het gesê Shana se inisiatief is bewonderingswaardig en ’n inspirasie. “Ek woon permanent op Stellenbosch (sy huis op Loxton is meestal vir vakansies) en was die afgelope maand op boektoere, en kan dus nie eerstehands getuig oor hoe die gemeenskap voel nie, maar ek is seker hulle is baie dankbaar,” het hy gesê. nother 0% fee increase for tertiary institutions will be a death knell for universities, warned Prof Jonathan Jansen, vice chancellor of the University of the Free State, when addressed the audience on Thursday 25 August in the auditorium of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Bellville. “The fact that politicians and not university councils will be making announcements on fee increases, along with the fact that the Fees Commission is managed by a panel of judges and not academics who have a vested interest in the crisis, does not sit well with me,” he said. Speaking at the third CPUT Public Lecture on the topic of “South Africa Higher Education in crisis: Possible Solutions”, Jansen told the audience Africa is littered with broken universities that held great promise a few decades ago but are now essentially defunct, as a result of state interference. Jansen was scathing in his opinion of the current Fees Commission and the fact that the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, is expected to make a suggestion on fee increases for 2017 soon. “Today the same thing that took down those universities is what will cripple ours – state interference is politicians deciding what fee increases should be,” he said. Coupled with the legacy of underfunding education and the chronic instability facing

university staff on an almost daily basis, Jansen said the country was sitting on a ticking time bomb. “The only thing it does is chase away the top academics and the fee-paying students because they have options. People who can pay will pay for safety and send their kids overseas and the academics with options will leave for greener pastures,” he says. Jansen said the future of strong, vibrant universities “relied on us protecting the rights – not only of the marginalised poor, but also of the middle class”. “The middle class students are desperately needed in universities. Not only do they cross-subsidise the poor, but they also add to the rich cultural mix that make being at university life changing. Take them away and you are left with poor kids and the lecturers that no-one else wants. “At my university many students will meet a black person for the first time on a nominally equal basis. These are important relationships that need to be built for the betterment of the country,” he says. Ultimately Jansen says the secure future of higher education in SA will need three key interventions – free education for only the poor, the middle class must pay for the privilege of higher education, and the bursary funding model must work sustainably to enable the government to recoup the funding for future generations.

New love between police, CPF in cluster DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

new relationship of trust was hopefully cemented between police and CPFs in the Tygerberg cluster during a general meeting of the cluster on Thursday. The relationship between the police and community policing structures can at times be a precarious business, which – if not nurtured – can result in a breakdown that will render communities vulnerable to crime. Thus, new assurances were given by the new cluster commander, Major-General Mpumelelo Manci, to ensure effective partnership with CPFs. Present were station commanders and CPF executives of Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Durbanville, Bellville, Goodwood, Parow and Bothasig, while the CR Louw Auditorium at Sanlam’s head office in Bellville was packed by the public. In his address Manci said roleplayers have to refocus on making this relationship fully functional. “We, police station commanders and the CPFs are jointly accountable to make this work,” he said. According to Manci, who took over the reigns six weeks ago, new monitoring and evaluation plans have been set in place. “Daily crime meetings as well as regular accountability meetings will be held in future,” he said, adding he was looking forward to a functional working relationship with the various CPFs. Sean McCleland, chairman of the Brackenfell CPF, said he welcomed Manci’s willingness to engage with local neighbourhood watches. “Our neighbourhood watch-

es are a massive asset in keeping our communities safe. It is therefore critical to develop a new trust with the police.” Kobus Conradie from the Kraaifontein CPF noted the proverbial ball was being dropped in terms of communication between the CPF and the police, but was ensured by Manci that “the police are ready to kick off again”. Manci said the police in the Western Cape are continuously employing new officers to address the shortage of manpower. “Some 300 new police officers were deployed in the city recently, but we need to be patient as the province is recruiting new policemen from within the Western Cape,” he said. Requests forthcoming from CPFs included a need for radios and bulletproof vests – issues the police will look into. Manci also called on individual CPFs to not allow internal politics to render the CPF cluster ineffective. “This is no place for politics and I won’t allow conflict. If it does exist, we have to resolve it and go forward.” Brigadier André van Dyk, station commander at the Bellville Police Station, emphasised the effectiveness of community policing. “Crime statistics are the proof. Bellville police station has gone from 53 to three on the list of effective police stations in the country (national effectiveness index) because our partnership with the CPF and community works,” he said. In Bellville we established a forum that meets every second month and because the neighbourhood watches are our ears and eyes, we can focus on more serious crimes. If it was not for that Bellville would be a less safe place,” he said.

Dis presies wat op Vrydag 19 Augustus gebeur het toe die Laerskool Welgemoed sowat 1 500 lemoene aan die Primêre Skool Blue Mountain in Durbanville oorhandig het. “Ons by die Laerskool Welgemoed strewe daarna om die vyf kernwaardes daagliks uit te leef. Dit is respek, selfdissipline, eerlikheid, omgee en verantwoordelikheid. “Die ouers kon stem watter waardes hulle vir 2016 wou uitleef en daar is besluit om in die derde kwartaal te fokus op eerlikheid en omgee,” vertel Stephanie Erwee, woordvoerder van die skool. Die program en al die aktiwiteite wat by die skool aangebied word, word deur die skool se inwonerskomitee bestuur. “Ons het besluit om Vrydag 19 Augustus as oranje-dag te proklameer as deel van ons fondsinsameling.

“Oranje is die kleur waarop ons hierdie kwartaal fokus en dit simboliseer eerlikheid.” Die leerders is die dag toegelaat om gewone klere aan te trek, solank iets oranje was. Vir dié voorreg (om gewone klere te mag dra) moes hulle met ’n lemoen betaal, het Erwee gesê. Daar was van die leerders wat meer ‘betaal’ het, net om seker te maak hulle is deel van die fondsinsameling,” het Erwee gesê. Die twee onderwysers wat die projek bestuur het, is Lynn Hill en Michelle de Wet en volgens hulle was dit ’n pretervaring vir hulle en die leerders. “Die pretgedeelte was die verf van die bokse in oranje deur die leerders. Ons het nie net die lemoene aan die skool geskenk nie, maar ook aan die Kaapse tak van Mould Empower Serve (MES) in Daviesstraat. Bellville. ie Hoërskool Durbanville wag op die uitslag van ’n ondersoek en moontlik tugstappe teen ’n eerstespan-rugbyspeler van die Hoërskool Stellenberg. Die speler het Saterdag ná die skole se interskolewedstryd ’n teenstander met die vuis in die gesig geslaan. Stellenberg het die wedstryd met 31-10 gewen. Netwerk24 het berig dat George Germishuys, hoof van die Hoërskool Durbanville, gesê het die voorval het ná afloop van die wedstryd plaasgevind toe die twee spanne bladgeskud het. Toe een van Stellenberg se voorspelers verby een van Durbanville se agterspelers loop, het hy in plaas daarvan om sy hand te skud, hom in die gesig geslaan. Die voorval het ten aanskoue van tal-

Fundraiser held for parking in Kenridge ESMÉ ERASMUS

he Kenridge The Hills Ratepayers’ Association is raising funds for additional parking areas in Kenridge, Durbanville Hills and Durbell. The “Hollywood Walk of Fame” show is being presented on 17 September from 20:00 at The Barnyard Theatre for this purpose. According to events co-ordinator Walda Bok the parking problems in Witboom Avenue at Fairmont High School in the morning and afternoon is one of the areas that will be addressed. Permission was granted earlier that the residents may develop a parking area in the park in Salisbury Avenue. “The parents park their vehicles on both sides of the road, obstructing the traffic. It is unsafe and causes traffic congestion. There were almost a few accidents there as a result of that,” she says.

Problems addressed The pavement will be levelled and the bollards will be moved to allow vehicles to park there when functions are presented at the school. It will also offer parking to people who want to walk their dogs in the park. The other parking problem that will be addressed, is at the Kenridge Park. “There is a huge demand for parking at the Kenridge shopping centre. People who want to make use of the park, also need to park at the centre due to a lack of parking at the park,” says Bok.

A parking area will be developed in the park on the corner of Mildred Avenue and Glen Road. “Mildred Avenue is a busy street and the vehicles that park on the pavement and in the road pose a safety risk,” she says. Also on the list of proposed projects is the upgrading of security and support to the Kenridge Neighbourhood Initiative (KNI).

housands of unsuspecting motorists run the risk of being arrested on the spot for unpaid fines in terms of socalled section 56 notices. But take note – because these fines are different in that a follow-up notice to appear in court need not and will not be posted, it will result in warrants of arrest being issued should the motorist not appear in court. Section 52 fines are issued where the enforcement officer physically stops a motorist and issues the fine. It is primarily used for moving violations that are witnessed by the officer. This fine, if not paid, serves as an automatic written notice to appear in court on the date specified on the fine. “Therefore, the motorist will not receive a notice in the post and a warrant of arrest will be issued against you, should you not

appear,” warns JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security in the City. A section 341 fine is issued when it is not evident who the driver is, for example a parking ticket, or when you are captured by a speeding camera.

Dit het my geleer om my stories maar by die huis klaar te skryf en dan net by die kantoor te copy en paste. Almal kom eers Woensdag uit die hipnose-fase wanneer die koerant op straat is. Ek het ook Monique het maar gesukkel met geleer om my en die Queen se taal, want Engels is niemand met mos nie my moeder se taal Wanvrae te pla op neer synie. my berigte ’n Maandag of moes sub, het jy gereeld gehoor: Dinsdag nie... “you know what I mean”. Ek weet nou, Monique! Brenden was my reismaatjie en ek het gereeld SMS’e gekry: “Fielies, hoe laat ry ons?” of “Fielies.com is jy nog nie klaar nie?” as hy wil huis toe gaan. Hy het gereeld kliphard saamgesing met al die CD’s wat gespeel word, terwyl ons na en van die kantoor ry. Hy sal nie vergeet kan word nie, want wanneer ek nou by die huis die CD’s gaan speel, sal ek aan hom dink. Rudie, die sub, het my ook knaend herinner dat e-pos met ’n koppelteken geskryf word, anders het dit ’n ander betekenis. Hy het jou ook geprys as hy jou stories geniet het of as dit in ’n lekker trant geskryf was. Ongelukkig was dit nou in my laaste dae by die koerant dat die pluimpies uitgedeel is! Ek het ook die laaste twee weke kanse gevat, veral as Marita nie naby was nie, met my kruisbestuiwing van berigte vir meer as een uitgawe (daar is 14) wanneer ek sommer in ander se “gebiede” oortree het. Dankie, Michelle, dat jy met kraamverlof gegaan het en my aan die diepkant ingegooi het, en ’n groot dankie vir Marita wat my kans gegee het om op my “jong” ouderdom weer te kan skryf. Toe my gehoortoets en oorafdruk vir die oorstel. Laastens is ek na die hulpmiddel-kantoor om te kyk hoeveel afslag ek kan kry (ongeveer 25% van R1 000). Kolganse lawaai net so erg hier Ek verwys na die skrywe van Gerhardt van Heerden, “Hengse geraas van kolganse ’n las”, TB, 24 Augustus, en wil graag laat weet dat ons dieselfde probleem in Groenvallei het. Van vroegoggend tot laat sit hulle op die dakke en skreeu en het ook al die dakteëls van my huis beskadig, wat natuurlik uit my sak vervang moes word. ’n Oplossing sal vir die plaag gevind moet word.

Die ander probleem is natuurlik ook al die kraaie wat oral rondvlieg en mors as gevolg van al die gemors wat die bosslapers en hawelose mense langs die Ou Paarl-pad strooi, wat op sigself baie onooglik is. Nie net moet ons daagliks na die gemors kyk nie, maar ook hoe hulle die boomtakke afbreek en vuur maak net waar hulle wil en dan ook nog sien hoe hulle dink dit is goed om hul toiletdinge ook net daar te doen. Die polisie en wetstoepassing ry net verby en doen niks aan die saak nie. Ons as belastingbetalers moet maar net hoes en betaal. R27m should be used for education I read the article “Progress on wooden bridge project” (TB Milnerton, 24 August) with such a sense of sadness and frustration. To me spending R27 million on an old dilapidated bridge (which we have lived without for quite a while now) is actually quite ridiculous if not vulgar in light of the fact that so many South Africans are in need of the basics. This is not why I voted for the DA! Can they not take that R27 million and spend it on underprivileged school libraries to educate the poor or on upliftment projects to create jobs, or job centres in neighbourhoods where people who are looking for work can congregate (and maybe get basic skills training) instead of standing on the side of roads in the cold, etcetera? Drie leerders is van die Hoërskool D.F. Malan. Hulle is Gerrut van Lill, Francois Smit en Lauren Huskisson. Ashley Flores Bartoli van die Hoërskool Rhenish en Dylan Malan van die Hoërskool Durbanville het ook die toekenning ontvang. Hulle is almal al langer as vyf jaar lede van die Oom Vossie-Voortrekkerkommando in Bellville. oe die paramedikus Jonathan Curtis verlede week ’n oproep ontvang oor ’n vrou wat glo in Monte Vista deur ’n hond gebyt is, het hy nie in sy wildste drome voorsien waarop hy gaan afkom nie. Dit was toe nie ’n vrou wat deur ’n hond gebyt is nie, maar wel ’n hond wat deur ’n ander hond gebyt is. “Toe ons op die toneel kom, was die hond in ’n kritieke toestand. Iemand was besig om die hond op die grond vas te hou. Dit blyk toe dis ’n gesinshond wat uit die agterplaas van sy huis geglip het,” vertel Curtis. Dit is nie in sy mandaat om diere te help nie, maar sy liefde vir diere het ingeskop. “Ek besit drie honde, so die liefde vir diere is daar. Toe ek die hond op die grond sien, het dit my hart gebreek. “Vir my is dit belangrik om mense se kinders dieselfde te behandel soos wat ek my kinders behandel wil hê. Dieselfde met my diere. “Ek hoop dat, sou een van my honde op die sypaadjie lê, iemand ook tot sy redding sal kom.” Curtis en ’n student Elroy Schoeman het vir die hond ’n drup en verbande aangesit en die hond verdoof. “Ek het die hond in die motor gelaai en na ’n dierehospitaal geneem, waar ek verneem dit goed aansterk,” sê hy. Dit is nie die eerste keer dat Curtis, wat vir South African Paramedics Services werk, met ’n hond hospitaal toe jaag nie. Hy het maande gelede ook met ’n beseerde polisiehond in sy motor hospitaal toe gejaag. “Ek dink nie ek is ’n held nie; ek het net gedoen wat ek dink die meeste mense in die gegewe situasie sou doen. Ek kan nie dink dat enigiemand ’n dier sal sien ly en niks daaraan doen nie.”

“The project is entitled ‘Measuring the Shape Conundrum’ and it’s about measuring the shape of a very exotic nucleus, 70Se, which ‘lives’ for only 41 minutes,” says Orce. “It will tell us how very tiny nuclei, that cannot even be seen in the most powerful microscope, may change shapes with just a small amount of energy from prolate to oblate or vice versa, and whether the elements that we see around us may have been produced in stellar explosions on the surface of neutron stars.” Mehl will be part of the experiment led by UWC. He will analyse this complicated data for his PhD together with Kenzo Abrahams from Kuils River and the UWC group. “UWC has been preparing this breakthrough for almost 15 years. The Honours/

hese are the most exciting times to do physics in South Africa, and at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in particular, where we have opened the doors for big science. “The doors for dreaming big are here!” says Professor Nico Orce from Brackenfell, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy states it. UWC drives the first experiment ever led by an African institution at the prestigious European Centre for Nuclear Research (Cern) in Switzerland and Craig Mehl, a postgraduate (PhD) from Athlone, is part of seven South African students involved in this exciting project.

Masters programme (Masters of Nuclear Science or MaNus) provides physics students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds with bursaries and the possibility to go through postgraduate studies, and have led to excellence since. UWC provides them with exciting and high-impact science projects here at iThemba Labs (Somerset West) and internationally (Canada, Germany, USA and Cern). We have over 50 members in our nuclear physics group, which comprises one of the largest physics groups in any university worldwide, and our goal is that our students become world leaders in nuclear physics and astrophysics.” Mehl is already working at the University of Kentucky in the USA (since last June) as a research scholar as part of his PhD train-

ing. Mehl will gain hands-on and research skills working closely with one of the few oncampus accelerators in the world (very closely, as the accelerator is part of the Physics Department). There he’ll take advanced postgraduate physics courses not available in South Africa, and learn how to measure very short nuclear lifetimes of about 0.000,000,000,000,001 seconds! It is striking to know that these shortest nuclear lifetimes are responsible for the age of the oldest objects in the universe, such as globular clusters. He remains registered at UWC. “Craig was one of my best students in third year quantum mechanics and nuclear physics at UWC and won an award for best presentation in Russia last year,” says Orce. Aimee honoured to ref in Rio rugby AVRIL FILLIES

o be one of the first females in charge of a rugby match at an Olympic Games is an honour that is not bestowed on many. Aimee Barrett from Pinelands was one of five South African referees that officiated in the Sevens tournament, a first at an Olympic Games after 92 years. “My first impression of the first rugby game in Rio was absolutely incredible. You could almost feel the players’ passion and how they gave everything for their respective countries. The crowd was great and the atmosphere was unreal. I was in charge of the match between Japan and Kenya at the Games,” she says. In April she was informed that she was selected and the closer the time came for the departure to Rio de Janeiro, the harder it became to suppress her excitement. “I was named on the SA Rugby Sevens and women’s referee panels for the 2016 season and made my debut as a referee on the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series the weekend of 9 and 10 April in Atlanta. When I came back to SA I was informed that I was named among an elite group of international referees to go to Rio,” says Aimee. Her fellow South African referees – Craig Joubert, Marius van der Westhuizen, Rasta Rasivhenge and Ben Crouse – were very supportive and helpful. All of them are very experienced and they shared skills and tips that have helped them. “Rasta is one of the all-time favourite refs on the Sevens circuit and he is one of the best ambassadors for the Sevens game. To describe him is not difficult – he is energetic, passionate and full of knowledge. He is a great asset in any ref team and has provided invaluable support to me as a new referee. He is loads of fun on and off the

The experience in Rio that she will always treasure is all the play-off games that were incredibly intense. “The women’s final between New Zealand and Australia was one of the most amazing finals I have ever watched. I was very grateful to be able to watch the top international players fight it out for the gold medal,” she says. Aimee stopped playing rugby in 2013 and turned her focus to refereeing in 2014. “I played rugby for College Rovers and KwaZulu-Natal from 2005 to 2008 as well as Maties and Western Province from 2009 to 2013. I also played Sevens for the ’Bok Women’s team from 2007 to 2012 and represented SA in 2011 at the Women’s World Cup in Canada and the SA 15s from 2008 to 2010 as a flyhalf or fullback,” she remembers. In her playing days she learned a lot of her skills from playing touch rugby and her rugby coaches were able to teach her contact skills and rugby tactics. “I love both Sevens and 15s – each has its own challenges. I love the speed and space of Sevens and then the tactics and kicking in 15s. Sevens is a lot more spatial and quick decision making, whereas 15s is a lot more structured,” says Aimee. She also mentions more should be done for women’s rugby to grow throughout South Africa. “It would be great to have more women involved and also more local and international tournaments for them to compete in. The more opportunities, the more each player learns and improves. Rugby takes her away from home quite a bit and when she does get some time to relax, she enjoys quality time with friends and family. She also likes to stay as active as possible and explore the beautiful landscape of Cape Town as a hobby. By day Aimee is a qualified biokineticist.
