ie plan is om ’n plaaslike Loevensteinparkie op te knap en dit terselfdertyd minder aantreklik vir bosslapers te maak, en dié plan vlot behoorlik. Hennie Koekemoer, inwoner en voormalige buurtwagvoorsitter, sê planne om die Loevenstein- en Allen Place-parke mooi te maak, kom reeds ’n ruk lank aan en die idee is om die parke te omtower in gunsteling-
piekniek-, draf-, stap- en bergfietsrybestemmings in die volgende paar jaar. “Die eerste stap was om bome in die grond te kry en dat die Stad ’n waterpunt en ’n ondergrondse pypstelsel na die bome toe lei. “Dié bome sou befonds word deur donasies van die Loevenstein-gemeenskap. “Die eerste fase het vandag (19 April) ’n realiteit geraak toe die Stad se parke-afdeling die eerste pype begin lê en bome aangeplant het,” het Koekemoer gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat Andrea Crous, die
plaaslike raadslid, die geld vir dié projek gereël het. Gert Knoetze, die nuwe buurtwagvoorsitter, sê hulle is op ’n missie om beheer oor hul buurt terug te eis. “Die parke is geïdentifiseer as vrotkolle vir die straatslapers, wat daarin skuiling soek en saans regmaak vir die nag teen die oorgroeide sloot en die standhoudende stroompie,” sê hy. “In ’n poging om die uitdaging van ongenooide en moontlik gevaarlike ‘bure’ die

New watch gets donation N
ot only has a new watch been established to keep the Majik Forest safe, but they have also received their first official donation. The Majik Forest Neighbourhood Watch last week welcomed the donation of reflective vests, made by a large security company for its members. The watch was formed after an increase in crime sprouting from within the park necessitated that it be fenced in, with specific operating times at the various gates. “We are happy to be able to support this newly formed community project,” said ADT Security district manager, Verena Hulme. “When communities become active participants in their own safety in this way, it assists security companies and law enforcement agencies in making a positive difference to the community.” The donation was handed over to the watch on Wednesday 20 April by the security company’s local community development manager, Gavin Robinson. “The communities surrounding the Majik forest have taken it upon themselves to invest in the safety of the area and to help keep the forest and surrounding complexes safe from criminal elements as the number of incidents has been on the rise,” said newly appointed watch chairperson, Werner Oehl. A discussion about a security scheme proposal was to be had between the watch and the security company to assist the watch with their patrols. Hulme adds: “It is important though for every member of the community to get involved in their own security in whatever way they can. It starts with being attentive to one’s surroundings and by raising the alarm when anything seems out of place,” she said. She encouraged other neighbourhood

O
nce upon a time in the northern suburbs there was a newspaper with one million photographers and even more sources. Whether it was jealousy or ignorance, outsiders could not accept this idea and never missed the opportunity to convince all and sundry that they too were outsiders. “TygerBurger cannot have one million photographers,” they would bicker among the residents. “Your story doesn’t matter! Your photo isn’t good enough!” The outsiders’ lies spread like wild fire and a dark cloud settled over the once optimistic northern suburbs. Poisoned statements such as “there’s nothing in it for you” and “keep your story for yourself” seeped into the brooding minds of the masses. So many radiant stories have been whispered selfishly among a select few while so many people out there were left in the dark. Yesterday these stories were shared; today they’re buried. The good news dried up, but so did information and forewarnings. Some residents knew of another’s wrongdoing, but the outsider’s poison prevented them from giving the newspaper a lead. Other residents also became victims of the wrongdoer, but those who were in the know were blinded by the outsider mentality. “Tell your loved ones, not your neighbour,” the outsiders cried, before adding paradoxically: “But always listen to your neighbour. They might have good information.” And so the newspaper was read by a great many residents, but it became unsustainable. Too many took and not enough gave back. The most inspiring of stories and the greatest photos never saw the light of day, so the community grew poorer and the out-
We need YOU! siders celebrated. Then one day a hero came along – you! You realised that you had a beautiful story worth sharing in your community newspaper. It was the catalyst of a new dawn. You sent the story idea to the newspaper and it was placed one sunny Wednesday. A resident who was once an outsider read it and thought they too have a story to tell. “Why not,” the resident thought. Another took a photo of the beautiful sunrise and also seized the opportunity to con-
tact the newspaper. The following week even more outsiders were converted and as quickly as a rainbow appears in the drizzle, TygerBurger once again became a community newspaper – a true reflection of the community it serves! The outsiders’ opinions were fluttered away by the Cape Doctor and were replaced with a feeling of companionship. And they shared happily ever after. The beginning. Six wineries celebrated their awards as the Top 6 in the first inaugural Cabernet Franc Challenge on Wednesday 20 April at a function at Avontuur Estate, sponsors of the Cabernet Franc Carnival which takes place there on 21 May. They are made with care and are not formulaic in any way,” said judging panel chairperson Christine Rudman, a Cape Wine Master (CWM). “Partly I believe this is due to it being a niche varietal, where passion for the grape drives the winemaker to produce a wine of outstanding quality. Noone is going to get rich out of Cab Franc, so you have to love it to make it and it is this respect for the varietal which came through in the entries,” she concluded. The public can taste these special wines at the Cabernet Franc Carnival at one of three tutored tastings at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30. Only 20 people are allowed per tasting. Not a typical cleanup

oin the Greater Tygerberg Partnership on Thursday 5 May for a morning clean-up of Bellville – with a difference. “This will not be a typical street cleanup. We are taking it up a level by including a trash relay contest where volunteers will have an amount of time to sort through all the rubbish that was collected on the day, and place them in the relevant bins,” says CEO Chris O’Connor. “All items that cannot be recycled will be used to make ecobricks.” O’Connor says the unique clean-up activity will help to raise citizens’ awareness on the local litter problem, and he believes it will help change people’s behaviour. “By participating in a Bellville cleanup, you are doing your part to promote
a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. We have organised this event to encourage and inspire the community ... to take ownership of their local area and really help make a difference to their local environment,” he adds. What’s more is that every volunteer will receive a free T-shirt, food packet and refreshments on the day. To become a volunteer on the day, simply sign up on the day at the corners of Teddington Street and Voortrekker Road, with the clean-up starting at 09:00 and ending at 12:00. An ecobrick is a 2-litre bottle, stuffed to the brim with everything that can’t easily be recycled. The bottle is screwed closed and then used as a building brick. hree motor vehicle accidents in the northern suburbs of Cape Town claimed the lives of two people and injured 13 others, of which three were critical, over the long weekend. The first happened on Saturday afternoon at about 16:40 on Tygerberg Road in Durbanville. It is believed that the driver lost control
of the vehicle which overturned and landed on its roof in the veld next to the road. Paramedics found that two people had sustained critical injuries and they were provided with advanced life support interventions and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Three other patients sustained moderate injuries. In the early hours of Monday morning, five people were left injured when a light motor lost control on the N1 near Durban Road and landed on its roof in a ditch. “When paramedics arrived three patients were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated with the assistance of the fire department and rescue services. After assessment it was found that one person had sustained critical injuries, three people had injuries ranging from moderate to serious and one person had minor injuries.” .

H
ulle is glo roekeloos, parkeer en laai passasiers af net waar hulle wil – ook in inwoners se opritte – en stel ander se lewens sodoende in gevaar. Tog word hulle steeds toegelaat om hul dienste in Proteavallei en Kenridge te lewer. Dié “hulle” is busbestuurders van die Golden Arrow-busdiens – lank ’n doring in die vlees vir die mense van Proteavallei en Kenridge, maar ook Welgemoed en Loevenstein, wie se werkerskorps van dié diens gebruik maak. Die busbestuurders is veral berug vir die nie-nakoming van die padreëls in Grandiflorastraat, aldus Andrea Crous, die plaaslike raadslid. Etlike klagtes is al deur TygerBurger van inwoners uit dié areas ontvang. Crous het in September verlede jaar ’n regsopinie probeer inwin van die provinsiale departement van vervoer en openbare werke oor hoe om dié busbestuurders te kry om binne die reëls te bly – wat betref die padreëls en dié van hul operateurslisensie. Die voorstel aan inwonerskant om dié busdiens heeltemal uit Grandiflorastraat te laat verwyder, is ook ter tafel gelê. Crous sê sy het toe geen reaksie ontvang nie, maar het wel in Januarie verneem dat sy moet wag vir ’n verslag van die Stad se kommissaris van vervoer om die Grandiflorastraat-kwessie aan te spreek. Dié verslag is op 20 April beskikbaar gestel, maar Crous is hoegenaamd nie gelukkig met die uitslag nie. “Die verslag is niksseggend. Die aanbeveling by punt 6 is (verbatim): ‘Dat daar van die vordering kennis geneem word’. Sedert
2009 het daar nog niks vordering gekom nie,” sê sy. “Daar is ’n doelbewuste werking téén die behoeftes van die gemeenskappe van Proteavallei en Kenridge.” Die verslag verklaar onder meer dat die busdiens sal voortgaan om sy dienste te lewer binne die 67 kmradiuspermit wat aan hom in sy operateurslisensie toegestaan is, soos ooreengekom met die provinsiale vervoer- en openbarewerke-departement. Die wettigheid van die busdiensbedrywighede is, volgens die verslag, tydens ’n vergadering in Julie laas jaar weer eens bekragtig. Só ook in September, toe die voorstel om die verslag te laat opstel, tydens ’n De Grendel-subraadsvergadering geopper is. Die provinsiale departement het vervolgens in die huidige verslag gesê dat: “Eerstens, die operateurslisensie wat aan die Golden Arrow-busdiens (Gabs) toegestaan is, gee aan die Gabs die gesag om ’n geskeduleerde busdiens in ooreenstemming met sy aangewese roetes binne die radius van 67 km van sy sakeperseel ... in Epping ... te lewer na plekke binne dié radius, met optelen afsetplekke. Tweedens, dat enige afwyking van die aangewese roete, maar binne dié 67 km-radius ... is binne die gesag van sy lisensie.” Die valbyl vir inwoners is egter die volgende: “In die lig van die bogenoemde word dit verstaan dat die Gabs nie verwyder kan word van sy Grandiflorastraat-dienste nie, en die feit dat dié dienste noodsaaklik is. “Verkeerskalmeringsmaatreëls sal egter afgedwing moet word om die veiligheidsrisiko’s aan inwoners en eiendomme te verminder.”

ie kursus in hoe om ’n organiese groentetuin aan te lê het soveel belangstelling gelok dat nóg so ’n kursus vir later vanjaar beplan word. Die kursus het egter ook ’n dieper betekenis. In dié kursus wat die NG Kerk Durbanville-Bergsig se ekologie-bediening aangebied het, het aspirant-tuiniers onder meer geleer om afrikanerblomme tussen hul groente te plant vir organsiese insektebeheer. Dit is aangebied deur Sydney Saayman van Table View, voorheen ’n kapelaan in die SA Lugmag en afgetrede gemeentebestuurder by die NG Kerk DurbanvilleBergsig. Hy is ook betrokke by die Kuilsrivier-opruimingsprojek. Dié projek behels die skoonmaak van die rivier van sy oorsprong in Durbanville tot sy monding in Macassar. Ekologie lê hom na aan die hart; juis
daarom dat hy as gemeentebestuurder die ekologie-bediening by die kerk begin het. “Mense moet begin besef dat die Koninkrykswerk nie net siele behels nie, maar ook dat die sisteme en strukture van die aarde weer gekersten word,” sê hy. Sydney wil aanstaande jaar ook leiergroepe oplei om sy groentetuinkursus ook aan gemeenskappe in informele woonbuurte aan te bied om hulle te help om selfversorgend te wees. “Ek is passievol oor groentetuine. Mense gaan al hoe meer honger wees en ek glo ’n groentetuin kan hier ’n verskil maak,” het hy gesê. Die volgende kursus word op Saterdag 17 September aangebied, weer teen net R50 per persoon. Plan of action for street people At a recent sitting of the Joint Operations Committee (JOC) of Bellville regarding the street people issue, a plan of action was devised. This includes a workshop to be held for church leaders on Thursday 19 May where the norms and standards of dealing with street people and responsible giving will be discussed, says Wilma Piek, who is in charge of the social development arm of the VRCID, the Bellville and Parow city improvement district, and a member of the JOC. She says at the recent meeting, held on Thursday 14 April, the JOC divided into their different task teams and discussed the plan of action based on an analysis that was done at their previous meeting. According to Piek, the importance of the buy-in of the churches is crucial to their plan of setting norms and standards to deal with street people. Piek and Ilse Els, manager of the Metro Evangelical Services, were appointed as the responsible people to reach the churches. Their plan also includes developing a database of all services and resources available to street people, street children and hardened street youth on preventative, intervention and aftercare services. Piek again confirmed the Safe Space alternative accommodation solution that would be up and running by July. A monthly action meeting on vagrancy hotspots between safety and security and social outreach role players was also discussed, regarding how to coordinate action that needs to be taken. Patricia Noyoo was also introduced as the new Street People Manager. “She will address our meeting as soon as she is at a stage where she can discuss the way forward within her department.� The next sitting of the JOC will take place on 14 June at 09:00. Lemoenduifies se vrektes ontstel Sedert Desember 2015 kry ons gereeld dooie lemoenduifies in en om ons tuin, en ook in ons wyer omgewing. My buurvrou het by navraag bevestig dat sy dieselfde opmerk. Ons as gesin het boek gehou vir die maand van April van alle dooie lemoenduifies. Op 25 April staan die totaal op 22. Ons dink ’n kat het dalk een se dood veroorsaak. Wat ook al die oorsaak mag wees, dit betrek geen ander soorte duiwe of voëls volgens ons waarneming nie. Die lemoenduifies het geen sigbare tekens van beserings wanneer ons hulle vind nie. So drie van hulle het wel ’n paar verlore stertvere gehad. ’n Paar is lewendig gevind, waar hul dan net op die grond sit. Partykeer kon hulle nog vlieg, maar dan kon hulle slegs so een meter se hoogte bereik, om dan weer grond toe te val. Ons het hulle dan versorg, net om hulle ’n paar uur later dood te vind. Is daar enigiemand wat dieselfde waarneming het, of kennis sou dra wat dit veroorsaak? Ons het reeds met ’n plaaslike veearts gesels, maar in daardie stadium het hy nog
geen kennis gedra van hierdie soort gebeurlikhede nie. Ter wille van die lemoenduiwe se getalle, sal ons ’n antwoord moet vind. ANONIEM Boston
Hoekom moet bure opdok vir stegies? Na aanleiding van “Berugte stegie laat vrou vir veiligheid vrees”, TB, 27 April, graag die volgende kommentaar: Ek voel saam met die betrokke inwoner! Dit wil voorkom dat meeste stegies in die Bellville-omgewing onderhewig is aan die stort van allerhande afval en die ongemagtigde “bewoning” deur weer eens ongewensde persone. Ek verstaan dat die instandhouding vir die stadsraad ’n probleem is, maar wat my dronkslaan is dat hierdie terreine net teen betaling aan die bure beskikbaar is? As bure instem om die in- en -uitgange te versper en die plek netjies te hou, hoekom dan verhuur of verkoop? Hulle verlig dan die raad se verantwoordelikheid! Geskok oor ‘oom’ se stankbewerings Ek en my gesin is ewe geskok oor die “oom” wat gekla het oor Bella’s Guardian Angels in Stellenryk (“Bure suur oor dié diere se maniere”, TB, 27 April). Die afgelope jaar was ek en my broer ten minste drie keer daar – ’n paar keer sonder afspraak en op verskillende tye van die dag. Ons het twee katte by hulle aangeneem, Sassi en Stacey. Hul plek is skitterblink en daar is geen stank van enige diersoort nie! Trouens, ’n mens
sal nie eers weet daar is diere as jy na hul voortuin kyk nie. Die katte se sandbakke is skoon, die hondjies is skoon en word gedurig gebad. Hul voëlhokke is skitterblink. Ek sien die oom kla oor ’n vark wat hulle aanhou. As die oom enige kennis gehad het, sal hy weet ’n vark is ’n baie skoon dier – skoner as honde. Hulle doen ’n ongelooflike werk en hul diere word soos konings behandel. Ek het maar drie katte en twee honde en my eie woonstel is enige dag baie vuiler as hulle s’n! Ek dink die oom het te veel tyd om oor en deur mense se heinings te kyk en hulle af te loer. Die tyd is ryp vir hom om na ’n aftreeoord te gaan. Hulle moet dalk ’n klag van stalking teen hom oorweeg. Ek wonder of hy sy huis sal oopstel vir besoeke – tydig en ontydig – om te kyk of sy huis skoon is? Ontsmet hy sy budgie-hokkie elke week? Slonshuis is ook ‘berug’ ’n
Verwaarloosde huis in Greystraat in Welgemoed het pas ook sy titel as “berug” gestand gedoen, nadat twee gesteelde tuinstoele daar gevind is. Verlede Saterdag is die kriminele op heterdaad betrap met die gesteelde ware binne-in die huis, wat reeds in Maart laas jaar as ’n probleemgebou verklaar is, sê Andrea Crous, die plaaslike raadslid. Crous is na die woning terwyl die polisie steeds daar was nadat ’n inwoner haar versoek het om dadelik daarheen te gaan. Crous vertel hoe die dramatjie homself afgespeel het: “Verlede Woensdag het inwoners van Greystraat hul tuinstoele vermis. Hulle het die polisie ontbied en die polisie kry toe twee stoele binne-in hierdie huis. “Verlede Vrydag het die polisie ’n verklaring gaan afneem oor die diefstal en Saterdagoggend het die polisie weer opgedaag en toe die dief slapend binne-in die huis betrap,” sê Crous. “By navraag wat hy met die ander stoele gedoen het, bel hy toe sy vennoot om die stoele te bring. “Sy daag toe daarmee op. Só is hulle toe in hegtenis geneem. “Dit is ook op die gemeenskapsorganisasie WelgemoedSafe se kamera vasgelê hoe dié vennoot die stoele in haar motor gelaai en daarmee weggery het,” sê Crous. Sy meen dít wat by dié woning aangaan, het ’n invloed op die hele straat se inwoners. “Die inwoners wil hê dat die Stad moet ophou om voete te sleep en daadwerklik optree. Mense is te bang om saans uit te gaan of om weg te gaan,” sê sy. “Die huis is totaal verwoes, met geen elektriese bedrading, krane, warmwatersilinder, en so meer nie. Die riete het al deur die swembad gegroei. Dus is dit reeds

Hospice gets legacy boost from donor The Iris House Children’s Hospice has just received its first legacy donation from a kind-hearted soul who passed away from cancer on 13 August last year. The late Yvonne Davids died aged 66 and was the great aunt of Adam Davids, an Iris House child. Davids was from Pniel, Stellenbosch, and an active member of the Congregational Church there, always participating in events and special unions, says Sue van der Linde, the hospice’s founder and marketing director. “Yvonne was very passionate about children. She was the senior headmaster of the boys and girls brigade, and ballroom instructor from her younger days,” Sue said. “Being a selfless person, after her niece Michelle Perrins – whom she loved dearly – passed away in May 2006 of cancer at the age of 10 years, she immediately after that in July established the Dwars River Valley ‘Hoping is Coping’ cancer support group. Yvonne was also a Cansa volunteer and member of the Relay Committee, Sue says. “As with her attachment to Michelle, she was very attached to Adam and always wanted the best for him. She wanted him, and children like him, to always have the best of care by people who are passionate about what they do.” Yvonne was never married and had no children of her own, Sue says. “So, she left the proceeds of her ‘bigger’ assets to Iris House and others whom she cared dearly about,” Sue adds. This all amounted to R16 000 which will be used to help the hospice continue their free service and community-based care for their special children. “You have a special place in our hearts.”

Maternity hospital back to origins
T
he Origin family centred Maternity Hospital in Panorama opens at the end of May and is the first hospital in South Africa to offer the opportunity to give birth assisted by highly trained midwives who get to know the patient during pregnancy and stay with them throughout labour. Obstetricians are on hand should they be required, and all the necessary medical backup is in place. The chief operations officer of Origin, Sydney Grové (who has delivered and/or assisted with delivering over 23 000 babies) recently oversaw a Florence Nightingale dedication ceremony and taking of vows by Origin’s midwives. They all have extensive experience but have undergone intensive further training. The function was attended by various stakeholders of this venture.
Wonderful, highly skilled midwives. Says Grové: “Midwives are a dying breed in South Africa. Unfortunately many of the good ones have gone overseas, but we are particularly fortunate to have got back from overseas – especially the Middle East – some wonderful, highly skilled midwives. We will make 100% sure that the values that Florence Nightingale instilled into
the profession of nursing and nursing science will be maintained in our hospital.” Matthys Maré referred to Origin’s vision as “incredibly bold – as it has to be when you set out on a journey to achieve something pretty incredible – and what has been achieved here is a first for the country.”
Getting the care that they deserve Gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Howard Manyonga, accredited facilitator for risk management for the Professional Protection Society and member of the independent Clinical Governance Committee of Origin, said: “All of my life I have been learning from midwives, and the Clinical Governance Committee will ensure that Origin has a just culture and gives patients the care that they deserve. Origin is a trailblazer in the industry.” Origin received its Department of Health licence, and got the green light by the independent Clinical Governance Committee to open its doors as soon as the Board of Healthcare Funders inspection is complete. Mom’s breakfast in bed is quite a treat in this country, with fathers typically going out to buy fresh croissants and other pastries for the mothers to enjoy.
China
More and more people in China are celebrating Mother’s Day. The gift of choice is carnations, which is the most sold flower on the day. Since 1997, Mother’s Day in China has also served as an opportunity to remember and help impoverished mothers, especially those in the country’s rural areas.
Ethiopia
Ethiopians celebrate their mothers for three whole days following the rainy season. During this time, they enjoy a feast known as Antrosht. As part of the feast, children bring

Indonesia
Mother’s Day is known as Hari Ibu in Indonesia and celebrated on 22 December. In this country, mothers are spoilt with gifts and surprise parties. Competitions, such as cooking and kebaya (traditional Indonesian outfit) wearing, are popular pastimes on the day. Indonesian moms are also given the day off from any domestic chores.
Japan
Mother’s Day celebrations in Mexico traditionally start with the singing of the popular song “Las Mañanitas”. The song can be sung a cappella, or you can call in the help of a mariachi band or contracted trio. It is usually sung at birthdays, but on Mother’s Day, Mexicans make an exception for the most special women in their lives.
Nepal
The Nepalese equivalent of Mother’s Day is known as Mata Tirtha Aunsi (“Mother Pilgrimage New Moon”) and takes place in April or May each year. During the festival mothers are honoured with gifts, while the mothers who have passed away are remembered. Traditionally, a pilgrimage is undertaken to the Mata Tirtha ponds, about 6 km from Kathmandu, in honour of mothers who have died.
Peru
The Peruvians celebrate Mother’s Day with a ceremony known as Pachamanca. Food, including meat, potatoes and corn, is prepared in a hole in the ground covered with hot rocks, mats and leaves. Vertel vir almal hoe lief jy haar het Los ’n boodskap vir jou ma op sosiale media waarin jy met almal deel hoe besonders sy is. Dit mag dalk jou kubervriende irriteer, maar sal beslis jou ma geliefd laat voel. 4. Neem haar uit vir ete . . . of kook vir haar Neem jou ma na ’n restaurant waarheen sy nog altyd wou gaan en laat haar enigiets op die spyskaart bestel – op jou, natuurlik. Of kook haar gunstelinggereg tuis. Maak dit ekstra spesiaal met ’n pragtig gedekte tafel omring deur die mense vir wie sy die liefste is.

L
ocal musician Glen Hartmann will be exploring themes of travel when he performs alongside an exhibition of travel photography by Sarah Isaacs at the KnexT Galley in Gardens on Thursday. The singer and songwriter describes his music as an acoustic cross between folk and indie pop. “My songs are generally upbeat and the groove is kept that way through incorporating a kick drum and energetic acoustic guitar rhythms into the music – it’s the type of music that makes you want to sway to the beat.” Glen says he writes lyrics that are real and hopes his words will make people feel uplifted. The “Home, I Saw” singer was just five years old when he first discovered music. “I remember messing around on my grandparents’ piano. I could play nothing and it did not sound good, but I think that was the first time I was intrigued by an instrument.” He had to wait another three years before he started actually learning music, on the recorder, but he hasn’t stopped yet. Glen wrote his first song at the age of 15 in dabbled in a couple of bands before deciding to “go solo”. It wasn’t long before he heard his first song on local radio and later, on a national station. “The first time I heard my song on national radio, I was actually asleep and I remember waking up

Another big achievement for him was playing his first music festival in Kwazulu-Natal and his first national tour. “Releasing my first EP album was also an amazing experience.” Along the way, Glen also found time to complete his degree in law and media, a way for the creative
to explore his analytical side. “I feel like I have both an analytical and creative side. I studied law because it interested me and I wanted to be challenged analytically.” Despite his passion for music and his plans to pursue a music career, Glen says it was important to him to have a qualification behind his name and the skills he learned in law have proven to be the most valuable in his current industry. “Realising that my law skills would help me in my music made the transition easier as I was coming to an end with my time at law school. It helped me make sense of the transition.” Glen has been in studio recently, working on two brand new songs and reworking some of his current repertoire. He says fans can expect something “a little different and a bit more punchy”. “I have some plans with what I want to do with the new songs, which hopefully I can reveal in the near future, but otherwise, I hope to release them sometime this year. He’s been writing new songs and plans to release more visual material like lyric videos, cover song videos soon, and says he’ll be performing more now that he’s done in studio, starting with his show at KnexT Gallery on Thursday 5 May from 18:30 to 20:30 where entrance costs R10 at the door. A number of great choral masterpieces performed by top South African choirs can be heard at Bishops College in Cape Town from Thursday 12 to Saturday 14 May. Participating choirs include the Cape Soloists’ Choir, Tygerberg Children’s Choir, Cape Chamber Choir, The City of Tygerberg Choir and the Cape Town Youth Choir. Well-known choral conductors like Leon Starker, Hennie Loock, Jaco Dippenaar and Linda Claassen will lead their respective choirs with the internationally acclaimed Norwegian choral pedagogue and conductor Kåre Hanken, appearing as guest conductor with both the Cape Soloists Choir and the Cape Town Chamber Choir. The first concert on Thursday 12 May features maestro Hanken conducting the Cape Soloists’ Choir and Camerata Tinta Barocca in a performance of the “St John Passion” by JS Bach. For this special performance, Hanken will include the original opening to the second part which is no often heard in concerts. It has been said that Bach himself referred to this particular opening as the best one. On Friday 13 May, three
choirs can be heard in a concert entitled Romancing the Tone. The Tygerberg Children’s Choir, conducted by Hennie Loock, will enthral the audience with their award-winning singing and The City of Tygerberg, conducted by Linda Claassen, will perform Louis Vierne’s beautiful and not often heard “Messe Solennelle, Op.16”, with Mario Nel at the organ. The Cape Town Chamber Choir’s programme will be conducted by Kåre Hanken. In Nature & Humankind, the last concert on Saturday 14 May, the Cape Soloists Choir, conducted by Jaco Dippenaar, and Cape Town Youth Choir, conducted by Leon Starker, will treat the audience to a programme with Knut Nystedt’s famous “Three Motets” and a selection from Rachmaninov’s “Vespers (’All-Night Vigil’)”. Why is your mother special to you? “My mom is very special to me as I can relate to the hardships and sacrifices she made, being my mom. She always taught me about respect for myself and others and it is something I still take with me to this day. P
erforming in one of international choreographer Ashley Killar’s ballets in Shades of Love is “almost like completing a circle” for Observatory’s Tracy Li. The former prima ballerina’s made her South African debut in a Durban production of Killar’s Romeo and Juliet in 1992, before moving to Cape Town to join the Cape Town City Ballet just one year later. Although now retired, Tracy will make a guest appearance in Towards Illusion when CTCB present Shades of Love at Artscape Theatre from Saturday 7 to Sunday 22 May. The company have been hard at work since January preparing for the production which includes Killar’s Towards Illusion, The Miraculous Mandarin, Serenade and Glazunov Variations along with a brand new Romeo and Juliet balcony pas de deux by Robin van Wyk, the Beauty and the Beast pas de deux inspired by John Cranko, and the pas de trois, Tritsch-Tratsch, adapted and performed in his honour. “Ashley is such a lovely person and easy to work with,” Tracy says, adding that while he might not always be an easy person per se, it’s his encouragement that makes the experience enjoyable. “It’s very nice to work with someone so positive and it’s very yielding in a way.” Tracy explains that Towards Illusion follows professional dancers as they prepare themselves for a performance. “It’s basically playing around with what a dancer’s daily life is.” With this in mind, Tracy says Killar isn’t very rigid, allowing Tracy to play with the
feeling and message she wants to bring across to the audience. “It’s unusual and we are having a lot of fun trying to get the essence of what he wants.” Since retiring from the stage in 2007, Tracy has stayed on with CTCB as a teacher and coach, sharing her 20 years of repertoire with a new generation of dancers. She was pulled back to the stage in 2013 however to dance Camille and has made guest appearances “now and then” ever since. “It’s the best of both worlds.” Tracy now enjoys the privilege of being more selective with the roles she chooses and tries to use this opportunity to explore her artistic side. “I’m not here to compete with the younger generation….I admire all their strength and abilities, but I am exploring how much I can discover in myself.” Tracy believes that supportive audiences will energise younger dancers, but quickly adds that they do have their own following, but the company is always looking to expand. From a management side she says the company is always pushing dancers to help them dance to the best of their abilities. While Tracy doesn’t have any other theatre plans after Shades of Love herself, she’ll be concentrating on making sure the CTCB dancers are physically and mentally prepared for the company’s upcoming productions. She’ll be joined by 13 other dancers when she performs Towards Illusion, to the score of Benjamin Britten’s “Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge”. on’t be fooled by the fact that Regan Wilson (18) is partially sighted – he is one of the very best judoka in the country. Full stop. Regan is the deserving winner of the TygerBurger Sport Star of the Month award. Residing in Delft, the Athlone School for the Blind learner in Bellville South is raking in the medals on the national judo scene. “I started judo at the age of 11 at the school and loved it from the word go. The adrenalin rush you get on competition days makes it very exciting and I just love the sport,” says Regan. He started under the watchful eye of Lorraine Job who is a retired 7th Dan in the sport. Now, he trains under Mike Job, who is very respected in the sport. Just last week at the Commonwealth Judo Championship in Port Elizabeth Regan competed in the partially sighted and abled body divisions and won gold in both in the u.55kg division (17 to 19 years). “The last year or so has been good. I think winning both divisions last week is probably the highlight of my career thus far. I also

Sanlam race aiming for gold Having cemented its position as one of the continent’s most prestigious races, the organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will aim to take another step forward this year in their attempt to close the gap on the world’s biggest road running events. Set to be held for the third time since its relaunch in 2014, the annual 42km race takes place in the Mother City on 18 September 2016, and proudly retains IAAF Silver Label status. More fight action on cards Cape Town’s favourite local mixed martial arts promotion, Cape Fight League (CFL), returns to Theo Marais Sports Park on Saturday 21 May. Following the huge success of the first Pro CFL event held at Sunningdale Sports Complex on Saturday 26 March, another action-packed tournament in Cape Town is anticipated. Doors are expected to open at 17:00 and tickets are available at Computicket. CFL 15 will feature 15 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bouts, with five of them being title fights. “Our last show was a huge success with awesome fight action. “This event will see five pro am title fights and one professional bout in the
heavyweight division,” said matchmaker Anthony Kettle. As a popular amateur fight circuit, CFL is a feeder to professional MMA promotion Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Worldwide and has produced dozens of professional athletes. CFL 15 will be live-streamed on its Youtube channel allowing spectators worldwide to not miss out on the event. Formed in 2011, Cape Fight League showcases the talents of fighters across the country. CFL gives amateur MMA and K1 fighters a chance to compete with fighters from across the country and abroad, right here in the Mother City.
