Die perd is tydens 2010 se Wêreldbeker-sokkertoernooi by die V&A Waterfront in Kaapstad uitgestal. Jezile beoog nou om die perd na sy vakansiehuis in die Oos-Kaap te vervoer. ROADWORKS: STELLENBOSCH ARTERIAL AND POLKADRAAI UPGRADES TO END NEXT MONTH
Relief for motorists RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
M
otorists who have experienced traffic delays over the past two years on the Stellenbosch Arterial and Polkadraai Roads in Kuils River will soon be breathing a sigh of relief. This, at least, is the opinion of the department of transport and public works regarding the R14 million upgrade which started
in October 2013. Several deadlines have been scheduled, including December 2014 and April 2015. The new date for completion, according to the department, is next month – news that local ward 14 councillor Bert van Dalen is delighted about. “This project has been dragging on for quite some time. It is time it gets done. “The construction has caused a lot of inconvenience for motorists and we have re-
ceived a lot of complaints from the public,” van Dalen said. Byron la Hoe, spokesperson for the department, said urgent repairs were required on the Stellenbosch Arterial (M12) between the Strand/Van Riebeeck Road intersection and the Polkadraai dual carriageway (direction Stellenbosch). “The M12, which carries over 15 000 vehicles daily, was upgraded at the same time. It was last refurbished in May 1991,” la Hoe
said. Completed works to date include a new carriageway, new street lighting, upgraded stormwater works, the rehabilitation of the Kuils River railway bridge, and the protection and relocation of various utility services. Van Dalen said a traffic circle that was temporarily put in place during the construction process, is something that should perhaps be kept in place. V To page 2.
