arow Police have again been stained by the arrest of an officer on charges of corruption, dealing in drugs, possession of drugs and possession of stolen property. The 34-year-old man was arrested at his house last week Wednesday and already appeared in court. He was released on R5000 bail and pending investigation the case will continue on

30 September. His arrest follows various similar incidents in the province after Western Cape Police conducted crime intelligence driven operations last week. These operations focused on alleged corrupt relations between police officers and other individuals in society. Says provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk: “After extensive investigations, three members were arrested during the past week.” The other two are from Strand and Macas-

sar. “More arrests of members are imminent,” continues Van Wyk. “The management in the Western Cape has vowed to root out criminal elements within its ranks and we trust that these arrest will send a strong message to other would-be criminals within the police.” His sentiments are echoed by Parow Community Policing Forum chairperson, Roger Cannon. “It’s plain stupidity to think that you can get away with these types of crime and never

get caught. At some stage someone will blow the whistle,” he elaborates. Cannon is weary of tarnishing the police with the “corruption brush”, because he is adamant that one corrupt member doesn’t mean the police cannot be trusted. “Our police do a fantastic job in the circumstances. If we paint them all with the same brush then hard-working, honest members will become demotivated. Corrupt members among the police must know that they will be exposed for what they are.” V To page 2.

Die Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (SBA) gaan weer vanjaar sy loopskoene aantrek om Erfenisdag deur die strate van die Bo-Kaap te vier, en almal is genooi. Met dié 7 km-stap hoop die organisasie om mense van verskillende agtergronde bymekaar te bring, en daarom word lesers genooi om op Saterdag 24 September saam te stap. Die stap begin om 10:00 en inskrywing is gratis, maar stappers moet egter steeds registreer. Dít sal om 07:30 en 09:30 by die Boorhaanolsentrum te Pentzstraat 26 in die Bo-Kaap plaasvind. Hierdie is ook die begin- en eindpunt van die stap. Elke stapper se inskrywingsnommer is ’n spesifieke idioom om ook Afrikaanse idiome as ’n taalerfenis te laat herleef. Then subcouncil chairperson, Clive Justus, also opinioned that one should be careful of generalising. “I would like to emphasise that there are more dedicated, diligent and loyal cops than the few bad apples,” he said at the time. Even when you tell them you are phoning the police, they watch and act all calm until you take the turn-off and look behind you, just to see how they scatter away.” Bellville police say they are aware of the two alleged scamsters. “We are aware of them in the vicinity, but they aren’t here that often,” says spokesper-

f you see two “clowns” at the traffic intersection of Bill Bezuidenhout Road and Willie van Schoor Avenue, do not give them money – they are scamsters. So says Wendy Kotze, an irate resident who regularly confronts the man and woman who dress up as clowns under the pretence of collecting money for abused women and children. “Once again I saw this ‘hoax’ play off where people hoot to give these scamsters money as they are ‘raising funds for abused women and children’. I have rolled my window down every single time telling them I will be phoning the police, after which the man and woman, who is the head of this

Unfortunately no crime is being committed by those who say they are collecting for something, and then turn out not to. People who legally raise funds will have an authorisation letter almost all of the time,” she says. “If not, their containers will have the corporate logo of the organisation they are collecting the money for. “The City of Cape Town has a policy about giving responsibly. This is our advice too: rather give to an organisation than to anyone on the streets. The more people give, the easier it is for them to remain on the streets, and the harder it is to rehabilitate such people back into society,” says Van Niekerk.

Time again for another ‘Amazing GRace’ It’s time again for this year’s instalment of the Amazing GRace event. The popular race is based loosely on the like-named television show, The Amazing Race, but differs in its intentions and efforts. This year, 20 teams of four to five members each – as well as various organisations from across the northern suburbs – will compete by travelling from one organisation to the next in an attempt to complete obstacles or to render a service. These obstacles are varied and could range from painting the buildings or parts thereof, to processing foods, cleaning premises or selling food coupons in the street to collect money for charities. Organisations in need will benefit from the services delivered during the event.

“In short, the organisation attends one meeting with the Amazing GRace organisers, discusses the need at their organisation and provides the needed materials for the job,” says Hewitt de Jager, founder of HewLin Compassion, an NPO based in Kraaifontein. “We then provide the manpower ... to complete the task or render the service on the day.” They are dedicated to uplifting the lives of people and are also the annual organiser of the event. “This event enables HewLin Compassion to achieve its objective and sustain the organisation for at least four to six months,” De Jager says. The success of the event is based on four components, he adds.

These are registering a team of four or five members. (The necessary forms are available at hdej007@gmail.com). Then, organisations must attend at least one meeting with the organisers. (Request an invitation using the email address listed above.) Thirdly the “Amazing Volunteers” (AVs) get to facilitate certain pit stops during the event, so people need to sign up if they wish to volunteer on the day. Lastly, “we need all the help we can get,” says De Jager. “This could be financial, through marketing, printing, transportation, building materials and so much more. Parow Valley NHW hosts braai Parow Valley Neighbourhood Watch will be having a braai day as part of their Heritage Day celebration this Saturday. “Let’s keep the flame burning! Die Loslappies-kwiltgroep se missie is om ’n manjifieke kwilt te maak en dan genoeg lootjies te verkoop sodat hulle met die opbrengs ’n stoof en eetgerei kan koop vir die Rusoord vir Dowes in Bellville. Die nood was blykbaar so groot dat ’n weldoener sommer klaar die geld vir ’n stoof geskenk het. Nou moet die Loslappies genoeg lootjies verkoop sodat hulle die weldoener kan vergoed en ander items soos messe, vurke, potte en panne vir die sentrum in Bellville kan aankoop. Bernmari Joubert (66) van die kwiltgroep sê die fokus moet nie op haar of die kwiltgroep val nie, maar op die droom. “Een persoon se droom kan ’n verskil maak in die lewens van ander. Streef jou drome na!” moedig sy aan. “Ons word gemotiveer deur ’n liefde vir ons medemens,” sê sy.

Die kwiltgroep het 28 lede van oraloor Kaapstad en vergader maandeliks in Panorama om saam te werk aan die droom. Verlede week het die Nasionale Instituut vir Dowes op Worcester en Radio Tygerberg die groep ontmoet by die NG kerk Panorama tydens ’n oorhandigingsplegtigheid. Gister (Dinsdag) het ’n paar Loslappie-lede hul bande met die rusoord versterk deur skons, wat gebak is in die nuwe oond, af te lewer en saam Bybelstudie te hou. Die kwiltgroep is duidelik meer as net ’n groep individue. “Gedurende ons vegaderings deel ons mekaar se lief en leed,” sê Joubert. “Ons gee raad en is nooit te krities nie. Ons is ’n sisterhood en met hierdie droom is nie een van ons negatief nie. Ons is vuur en vlam!” Nou kort hulle nog net die ondersteuning van die gemeenskap. Die kwilt waaraan hulle werk, sal aan die wenner gaan van die lootjie-kompetisie, wat sluit wanneer hulle die naam op 30 Oktober uitlees. Women hosted at spring day Women from all over the northern suburbs arrived with boundless excitement at the Portuguese Club Hall in Milnerton recently during the De Grendel Lions Club’s Ladies Spring Day. The venue had been transformed into a magical space with overhead garlanded material wraps and rows of lighting and flowers. Lovely decorated tables with tasteful place settings were decorated with candles. During the fundraiser, which Member of Parliament James Vos and local ward councillor Helen Carstens attended, Lion president Patrick Pillay said: “Here, we continue to save lives through the measles inoculation programme. We keep on saving sight and working for the deaf. We improve our communities in countless ways. Lions continue

to be the great champions and protectors of children. We respond by supplying food, water, blankets, clothing, and medications with kindness to our fellow humans. We are also concerned with the welfare of animals.” He closed by wishing best of good luck to all in attendance at being drawn for one of the 45 mystery prizes. These contained items from a range of wines, a microwave oven, perfumes and vouchers to hairstylists and many others. The first prize was a weekend for two at an upmarket West Coast resort. In closing, he punted the clubs’ upcoming Beer fest event that is to be held on 28 and 29 October at the Edgemead Sports Club. Among other attractions the beer fest will have three bands, various stalls, German food and, of course, beer!

Die kompetisie word jaarliks in die Hugo Lambrechts-ouditorium gehou in samewerking met die Hugo Lambrechts-musiektrust en Johann Vos, die hoofborg. Altesame 13 leerders het deurgedring na die eindronde. Name van oudwenners wat ’n sukses in die musiekbedryf geword het, is onder andere Lourens Fick, Estea Kruger, Annerike du Plessis en Roelof Temmingh. “More cancer patients receiving effective contemporary cancer treatment, is the outcome we seek,” says Trevor Sparks, training director at Elekta, the Swedish manufacturer of specialist oncology radiotherapy and radiosurgery equipment. Since opening their advanced medical training facility at Cape Gate Oncology centre in October last year, they have already successfully trained 80 medical professionals throughout Africa, on the use of the digital linear accelerator, of which four are in use at Tygerberg Hospital. The digital linear accelerators allow for limited radiation exposure of nor-

mal tissue to reduce side effects. Trainees included medical physicists, engineers and radiation therapists from South Africa and beyond. “Our main objective is to address the shortage of trained radiation professionals in Africa. In fact it is critical, because not only are these machines dangerous if not used correctly, but the lack of clinicians and equipment-trained radiotherapy professionals can impede the delivery of radiation therapy services,” he says. The medical training facility is a public/private partnership between Elekta, Tygerberg Hospital and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and is equipped with non-clinical Elekta radiation therapy, brachytherapy, oncology information management and treat-

ment planning. Sparks says the access that cancer patients in low-income countries have to radiotherapy equipment is unacceptably low. “More such machines are needed in the public health systems of especially African countries,” he says. According to prof. Hannah Simmonds, head of radiation oncology at Tygerberg Hospital, the impact of cancer diagnoses is ever increasing on the continent. In ten years it will have doubled from 600 000 to over a million. Tygerberg Hospital’s radiation oncology unit is one of only two state units furnished with advanced oncology radiotherapy equipment to serve around four million people, treating around 2500 patients a year, with an increase of 300 year on year.

Baie dankbaar oor dié diens Ek wil net baie dankie sê aan die personeel van die Tygerberg-hospitaal op die 9D-verdieping. Baie dankie aan die verpleegsters wat so mooi na my pa, Charles Knoop, gekyk het, asook die dokters. Dankie dat julle my toegelaat het om by my pa te kom sit, omdat ek in Mitchells Plain bly en openbare vervoer moes gebruik het. Die hospitaal het nie ’n goeie reputasie nie en ek was aan die begin bekommerd toe hy daar opgeneem is. Kla sonder sukses oor die lang gras “Corruption Claims Arise”, TB, 14 September,verwys. Ek kla al sedert 2014 by die munisipaliteit oor die gras op die oop stuk veld, wat grens aan Bedford- en Smithstrate, nie gereeld gesny word nie. Die gras is sedert Maart 2014 nog net twee keer gesny en groei elke keer hoër as ’n meter voor dit gesny word. Die publiek strooi dan ook hul rommel op die veld. Die droë gras het in 2015 ook ’n brandgevaar vir naburige huise ingehou. In 2015 was ek met raadslid Van der Walt in verbinding oor die klagte en ek het spesifiek aan haar gevra of die veld deur kontrakteurs gesny moet word, hoe gereeld dit gesny moet word en hoe word hul vergoed? Sy het haar nie verwerdig om op

my vrae te antwoord nie en na verskeie e-posse is die gras uiteindelik in Desember 2015 gesny. Dit is nou nege maande later nog nie weer gesny nie! In Junie 2016 het ek weer gekla en is my klagte van bakboord na stuurboord gestuur. In Julie het ek ’n klagte gestuur na die burgemeesterskantoor sonder ’n bevredigende antwoord. In ’n onlangse uitgawe is daar deur ’n senior amptenaar beweer dat hulle nie seker is of hulle die gras moet sny nie, want die veldblomme is besig om te blom. Wat ’n patetiese verskoning en klomp twak! Die skrif was toe reeds aan die muur. Hoekom is daar nie toe ’n mededeling gemaak oor die appèl wat tans hangend is nie? Dit skep die indruk dat die een hand nie weet wat die ander doen nie! As raadslid Van der Walt my vrae in 2015 ondersoek het, sou sy besef het dat daar probleme is. Paul saw my sons grow up Thank you for informing the community of the passing of an exceptional human being (“Bellville’s ‘gentle giant’ passes on”, TB, 14 September). I had such a shock and am so sad to hear of the passing of Paul. I’ve known Paul for the past 13 years at the previous Checkers. Always caring, helpful with a calm demeanour, but with pride. I was pregnant with my first born son, who is now 12 years old, when Paul used to rush over and help load my shopping bags in the car. He later assisted when I

went shopping with a little one, later two little ones. He has seen both my sons as babies, growing up in front of him, always enquiring about the family, so we used to strike up conversations. I was amazed through our conversations that he was putting his children through school and university with the money he earned as a car guard! He was an absolute amazing human being. RIP Paul. Hy het diep indruk op baie gemaak Gentle Giant Paul, oftewel Biggy soos ons kinders hom gedoop het, was voorwaar ’n staatmaker-karwag. In my oë was hy iemand wat ’n uitstekende begrip van kliëntediens gehad het. Biggy kon maar die boek geskryf het, want dit was deel van sy bestaan. Ons gesin ken hom nou al vir langer as 10 jaar en hy was die een wat ons kinders as kleuters rondgeswaai het. Hulle kon hom drukkies gee en hy het dit altyd respekvol ontvang en teruggegee. Ek onthou sy oog-operasie en hoe ek my eie ervaringe met hom kon deel as bemoediging. Ek onthou hoe sy seun met trots – toe ’n kelner by die Spur – gemeld het hoeveel suiker sy pa in sy warm sjokolade neem, terwyl ons warm en knus op ’n Maandagaand ’n burger geniet, en hy na ons voertuie omsien. Ook hoe Paul met trots van sy seun se studies gepraat het. Ons onthou hoe hy voor toemaaktyd gou vinnig brood en melk aanskaf by die winkel voor dit te laat is, want die huismense het versorging nodig. Paul was in ons oë ’n ware heer met ’n ontwikkelde

intellek met wie ons altyd lekker kon gesels oor so baie dinge. Nou wonder ek of ek op hom ag geslaan het die laaste keer toe ek daar was? Mag ons nooit vergeet dat enige persoon se einde om enige draai kan lê nie. Laat ons mekaar met respek behandel en liefde gee waar ons kan – in herinnering ook aan Paul. Mag hy vrede en rus ervaar en ons bid dat die liewe Vader dan ook vrede en rus sal verskaf aan sy familie in die wete dat hul man, pa as mens ’n diep indruk op so baie gemaak het. Hair affair: rules teach discipline I haven’t really followed the latest hair debacle, though I recall there being similar incidents in the past. I agree 100% with Linda (“Kinders moet reëls nakom”, TB, 14 September). As a former Fairbairn College parent with friends who are current parents, their children and my girls were sent home on numerous occasions, including having to sit detention for weeks on end regarding hair issues. The code of conduct existed before some of us were born. It states everything clearly, and may I add, it’s issued almost a year before the learner even knows whether he/she will be excepted at the school. Our children should be taught the importance of rules and punctuality. It teaches them discipline and responsibility. I would like to stress that I do not condone racism on any level. Players bring ’n eerste op planke LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl

ie Milnerton Players sal hul eerste Afrikaanse produksie nog dié naweek op die planke bring. En wie beter om die regie te behartig as die bekroonde teaterveteraan Mari Mocke, wat van die ouderdom van 13 al gehore vermaak. Met die help van die akteurs Hanno Fourie van Parklands, Ilse van Niekerk van Durbanville en Anton Schäfer van Pinelands, gaan Mari die bekende Chris Barnard-toneelstuk Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa aanbied. Mari is ’n groot aanhanger van Chris Barnard se werk en toe die Milnerton Players vir haar gevra het om ’n Afrikaanse toneelstuk by hul teater op te voer, het sy teruggekeer na haar eie teks vir Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa wat sy vir R1,50 by ’n boekwinkel in Port Elizabeth in 1964 gekoop het. Dit was Barnard se eerste drama wat daardie jaar ook vir die eerste keer gepubliseer is. “Dit is in die absurde genre wat daardie tyd by sommige dramaturge gewild was,” vertel Mari. “Die hele teks het so tot my gespreek en ek het dit nog nooit opgevoer gesien nie.” Alhoewel sy baie tekste gelees het om die

uitdaging vir ’n Afrikaanse produksie waar te maak, vertel Mari dat sy oor en oor teruggegaan het na Barnard se stuk. “Dit het hierdie pragtige klimaks op die einde waar die pa sy seun eindelik aanvaar.” Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa vertel die storie van ’n enkellopende middeljarge man, sy bejaarde ma wat soms aan demensie ly en ’n jong man wat in hul lewens kom. “Dit is die verlange van die hoofkarakter, Org, wat soek na die betekenis van die lewe, waarom die hele teks tot my gespreek het.” Mari sê dat hierdie soektog na vrede en liefde tipies is van die absurde genre. In dié stuk woon Org en sy ma in ’n armoedige woonstelletjie en sy domineer sy lewe. Maar Org, wat nog nie vrede gevind het met wie hy is nie, verlang om ’n seun te hê. “Dan maak hy stadig op ’n dag kennis met die jong man wat kom besoek aflê en vir hom sê dat hy sy seun is.” Of hy nou wel Org se kind is of nie, of eintlik ’n regte persoon is, is vir die gehoor om te besluit. “Dit is wat my hoendervleis gegee het,” vertel Mari. Die toneelstuk self is heeltemal anders as wat Mari nog aangepak het, en is by tye soms gewelddadig met al die aksie in die storie. Mari se ma het ook amateurtoneel gespeel en sy’t haar teaterdebuut as klein

meisietjie in 1949 saam met Brian Brooke gemaak. Mari onthou tot hoe haar skoolhoof vir haar soms oggende afgegee het by die skool sodat sy repetisies kon bywoon. As ’n 21-jarige vrou het Mari die land met ’n Kombi-bussie in 1958 deurreis toe sy die hoofkarakter in Belinda is doofstom, Andre Huguenet se Afrkaanse vertaling van Elmer Harris se Johnny Belinda, gespeel het. Mari het vir baie jare ook dramaklasse by haar private studio aangebied, maar die hoogtepunt van haar regieloopbaan was toe sy ’n Afrikaanse vertaling van William Gibson se The Miracle Worker, Die wonderwerk, in Port Elizabeth se operahuis aangebied het. In 2008 het Mari Athol Fugard se Sorrows and Rejoicing vir die spelers op die planke gebring voordat sy in 2010 The Road to Mecca aangebied het. Albei die produksies het die beste regisseur- en beste toneelstuk-toekennings by Cata-toekennings gewen. “In dié stuk het ek drie spelers en hulle is soos klei in my hande. Hulle is ’n lieflike span om mee saam te werk.” V Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa sal van Vrydag 23 September tot Saterdag 8 Oktober op Vrydae en Saterdae in die Milnerton-teater te sien wees, met middagvertonings om 14:30 op Saterdae. Foundation to host concert The Umbiyozo Foundation will be hosting a Heritage Day Concert on the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre from 13:00 to 17:00 on Saturday (24 September). “Umbiyozo is the isiXhosa word for celebration,” says Jason Woolf, founder of the Umbiyozo Foundation. The foundation is an umbrella youth development organisation uniting and servicing 18 community-based traditional song-and-dance troupes across Cape Town’s townships. “We have selected the best of these troupes for the Heritage Day concert where we will celebrate the rich styles of music and dance through South Africa.” The Umbiyozo Foundation’s mission is to transform troupes into sustainable agents of youth development, and to help township children and teenagers to successfully transition into adulthood and contribute to

Internasionaal het sy erkenning verwerf vir The White Lioness in Swede, The Waterbaby in Italië, en sy het die hoofrol gespeel in Shirley Adams onder regie van Oliver Hermanus in 2009. Sy het ook toekennings ontvang as beste aktrise by internasionale filmfeeste in Dubai en Durban in 2009, Grenada in 2010, Festival Khouribga Morocco in 2010 en die Carthrage Film Festival in Tunisië in 2010. Chloe prepares for world champs STEHAN SCHOEMAN

hloe Rutgers consistently performs at the highest level in karate in South Africa, proving herself time and time again. The 12-year-old De Vrijzee pupil in Goodwood is the TygerBurger Sport Star of the Month winner. She first set foot in a dojo at the age of five. Ever since that day she fell in love with the sport and dedicated her time to training and improving at Karate Zen in Goodwood. Here follows her achievements for the year thus far: • Karate-Zen Open Challenge in February (double gold); • Karate-Zen nationals in March (gold and silver); • S.A Karate Open Challenge in March (double gold); • S.A Karate nationals in July (gold and silver); • Women’s League in August (gold and silver); • Cheetah Challenge in Chloe Rutgers August (double gold, silver and double bronze), and • The Cape Town Open in September (double gold). “I was excited to hear from my mom that

Chloe wants to compete at the Dubai Open Challenge and Children’s World Championship in Egypt next year, but due to a lack of funds it will be difficult for her to show off her true potential and skills at these competitions. ith pace setters ensuring the race was quick up front, Asefa Negewo (Ethiopia) made history by breaking the long-standing fastest time set on South African soil over 42.2km, held previously by David Tsebe (2:09:50). Negewo stormed to victory at the prestigious Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday, in a time of 2:08:42 to lift the men’s crown at the IAAF Silver Label race. The second man home in a field which included top local and international athletes was Emannuel Tirop, who crossed the line in 2:08:47, with Baranabas Kiptum earning third spot in 2:09:21. Meanwhile, Tish Jones won the women’s race in 2:36:13, holding off a challenge from another world-class elite line-up. Mergertu Geletu came second, in 2:36:34, finishing ahead of third-placed athlete and South African Lebogang Phalula, who finished in 2:38:00. “It is great to see such fast times being run on SA soil, which shows how much value a race of this stature brings to the sport at domestic level,” said race ambassador and former world halfmarathon record holder

Killarney debut for new GTC car racing series ADRIAN PHEIFFER Multiple former South African champion, Plattekloof’s Johan Fourie, together with 15year-old Joshua Dolinschek, are going to be among those representing the Western Cape in different events in the national Extreme Festival meeting at Killarney on Saturday. The experienced Fourie, a dual winner of the South African Drivers’ Championship, was in action in Port Elizabeth earlier this month where he notched up two secondplace finishes in the Global Touring Car (GTC) events there. However, in a car that was obviously not at its best, he was forced to retire from the third race. Fourie will now be back in action on his home track at Killarney for the first time since 2014, at the wheel of a BMW-M2, in the new GTC championship.
