Cycling through desert for patients T

These three boys had a superb year on the local and national karting scene. From left are Jason Coetzee, Kyle Visser and Charl Michael Visser.

From strollers to karts Jason Coetzee (13), Kyle Visser (8) and Charl Michael Visser (11) had a dream season in this year’s karting season. These three friends are all pupils of the Kenridge Primary School. All three boys raced for the RKT (Roos Karting team) during 2015 in the Western Province and the South African national karting series. The boys are acquainted with each other since they were toddlers in their 4-wheel strollers which eventually led to go-karting on a provincial and national level and spending much of their free time practising their skills at a racetrack.

Kyle Visser won the Western Province 2015 Cadet go-kart championship and a national event. Charl Michael Visser and Jason Coetzee both won provincial and national events in Maxter and ROK during the 2015 series and raced under the South African flag in the ROK final event in Italy earlier this year. At the annual Western Province Karting prize giving Charl Michael received the trophy award for the best Maxterino racing driver for the season and Jason received the trophy award for the best rising star in Junior Max.

ygerberg mountain bike club member Paul Jacobs will participate as a solo participant in the Nedbank Desert Dash challenge in Namibia on 11 December. The race starts in Windhoek and finishes 369 km and 24 hours later in Swakopmund, crossing the world’s oldest desert. His inspiration and motivation for attempting such a challenge is Abundant Life Palliative Care. Established in 2009, Abundant Life (www.abundantlifevic.org) run by Sister Pitout and Dr Cupido, has cared for more than 1 600 patients. They care for those who are terminally ill providing dignity and peace of mind for patient and family alike. However, operating on a very limited budget, they are lartgely dependant on donations and volunteers. Currently based at Victoria hospital, their dream is to grow the organisation and establish an Abundant Life at every hospital throughout the country. Having recently met Sister Pitout and Dr. Cupido in person, Paul says he was instantly convinced that helping them to help others would and had to be his mission. “There are numerous charities out there and some enjoy more support than others for various reasons. This organisation however has touched me personally,”he says. “In a bid to shed light on and raise funds for Abundant Life: I am embarking on what is certainly my toughest physical (and mental) challenge to date (the Desert Dash). When my legs turn to jelly and my mind starts failing me, it’s the thought of the work done at Abundant Life for those in despair that will not only offer a clear perspective, but motivate me to continue towards the finish line.” A crowdfunding account where donations

Paul Jacobs in a recent MTB race at Meerendal. can be made in support of this most noble cause has been set up. “Please donate and share the link with as many as possible to help make a true difference to our fellow cyclists/compatriots and humankind in their final sprint to the finish line,” says Jacobs. “All donations, big or small are, very much appreciated. Rampant A’s remain unstoppable JOSEPH PILLAY There is no stopping a high-flying Glenthorn A’s side from clinching their fifth consecutive league crown this season. They beat a determined Westridge Yankees from Mitchell’s Plain 2-1 in a Cape Town Softball Association Super League encounter at Turfhall Stadium on Saturday. With the Glenthorn side still sporting an unbeaten run to date, the team tops the table with 29 points from nine games. But they may yet have ended on the receiving end as Yankees with bases loaded in the sixth innings had an ideal opportunity to score a fury of runs and nail A’s. But with Yankees leaving nine of their runners stranded between bases in comparison to Glenthorn’s five, Yankees could only blame themselves. It was a close and tight game with Yankees right outfielder Shinnay Erasmus providing the highlight of the game in the fifth frame with her splendid running catch to dismiss Cindy Davids. Nonetheless, Glenthorn pitcher Lauren Mulder held her nerve and pitched a steady

SEAN CAMPBELL After weeks of coming second best in close games against opponents above them on the BAWP major league table, Westridge did well to beat Crusaders 8-5 at the Stephan Reagan Oval in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday. Even though Crusaders accumulated more hits off Westridge’s two pitchers – Dean Martin (2.2 Inn, 6 Hits, 5 Runs) and Jayson Ripepi (6.1 Inn, 2 Hits, 0 Runs) – it was the 14 base on balls by their three pitchers – Jarrod Williams (5.1 Inn, 3 Hits, 3 Runs, 7 BB), Sergio Thomas (1 Inn, 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 4 BB) and Kyle van der Ross (1.2 Inn, 1 Hit, 4 Runs, 3 BB) – that came back to bite them. Westridge scored four runs in the second

game with a well marshalled field that assisted her in registering a 2-1 victory, considering that Yankees loaded the bases in the sixth frame but their runners were left stranded due to poor batting. Mulder, in her six inning contest, faced 28 batters, claimed six scalps, allowed five base-on-ball while she gave up five single hits to Charmelle Whiteboy (2-2), Candice Bull, Glynis Koopman (each 1-2) and Zeona Dearham (1-3). Yankees pitcher Megan Cable put up a brave fight against the Glenthorn batters and also earned six strike outs in her six innings contest. Cable faced 22 batters, allowed two baseon-ball and conceded five hits (4 singles and a triple) of which Courtney Stevens (1-1), Astrid van Kresteren, Jean Bell, Lisa Erasmus (each 1-2) and Carla Swanepool (1-3), who clobbered a three bagger, featured among the hits for Glenthorn. V In the other Super League games secondplaced Falcons (22 points) recorded a 12-2 win over VOB while St Martin’s won their assignment 11-4 against Normies. Tantasport rose to the occasion with a resounding 11-2 victory against Kenfac Phillies.

Yanks finally pull one through innings, three in the seventh and a single run in the eighth. Crusaders scored all of their runs in the third innings. Ripepi did really well to shut out Crusaders in his pitching stint. He also hit a solo home run which contributed immensely to the team’s victory. Luwayne du Plessis and Gwyn Petersen were the other hitters from Westridge who made notable contributions. Crusaders’ best hitters were Aiden O’Connor, Jamie Mauritz and Leeroy Adriaanse. Wesley Rushin from Westridge was ejected from the game in the eighth inning for showing unsporting behaviour.

Michaels was well-supported on the offensive side by the Moosa brothers, Riyaad (2-4 and 2 stolen bases) and Faizel (1-4, 2B hit, 3 RBIs). It was Faizel’s game-winning twobase hit in the sixth inning that accounted

for the three runs by the A’s. Lloyd Stevens got the last three outs only facing the hitters. Durbanville failed to take advantage of four errors by the A’s. Both teams left five runners on base.
