ONE YEAR LATER: FIRST PRODUCE FOR PROFIT
Reaping what they sow DESIREÉ RORKE @dezzierorke
H
arvest time on Avondrust farm, has ushered in an era of hope and prosperity for a group of emerging farmers from the neighbouring Wallacedene township. It’s early morning on the fields, when TygerBurger stops by for a visit on the farm, situated on the outskirts of Brackenfell and Kraaifontein. The soil is damp and an earthy smell of wholesomeness revitalises the fresh air. A few hundred yards away, four women and one man are joyfully tilling their lands. There is purpose in their stride and accomplishment is etched on their perspiring faces. A year ago, this group of five were unemployed with a bleak future. Today, they are harvesting the last of their carrot crops, with the promise of making their first profits as bone fide commercial farmers. They joined the farm, little more than a year ago when farm-owner Alfred Borchard launched an empowerment project. The pilot project commenced in March of 2012, when a group of people from Wallacedene approached Borchard with a proposal. They wanted a small patch of land from Borchard to start farming vegetables. They would till and take responsibility for the land, which would normally be plundered for produce by residents from the impoverished adjacent township. Borchard agreed, but opted for commercial farming instead of subsistence farming. A study done by the South African Insti-
Alfred Borchard and one of his employees Eric Cimela get ready to process the harvest, tute of Race Relations (SAIRR) in 2012, found that commercial farmers ensure greater food security in the country by producing more food than subsistence farmers. The study found commercial farms ac-
counted for 95 % of the country’s locally produced food. The remaining five percent was produced by the country’s estimated 1.3-million subsistence farmers.

In essence, according to SAIRR researcher Kerwin Lebone, South Africa’s food security was heavily dependent on commercial farming. V To page 2.
