H

arvest time on Avondrust farm, has ushered in an era of hope and prosperity for a group of emerging farmers from the neighbouring Wallacedene township.

It’s early morning on the fields, when TygerBurger stops by for a visit on the farm, situated on the outskirts of Brackenfell and Kraaifontein. The soil is damp and an earthy smell of wholesomeness revitalises the fresh air.

A few hundred yards away, four women and one man are joyfully tilling their lands.

There is purpose in their stride and accomplishment is etched on their perspiring faces.

A year ago, this group of five were unemployed with a bleak future. Today, they are harvesting the last of their carrot crops, with the promise of making their first profits as bone fide commercial farmers.

They joined the farm, little more than a year ago when farm-owner Alfred Borchard launched an empowerment project.

The pilot project commenced in March of 2012, when a group of people from Wallacedene approached Borchard with a proposal.

They wanted a small patch of land from Borchard to start farming vegetables. They would till and take responsibility for the land, which would normally be plundered for produce by residents from the impoverished adjacent township.

Borchard agreed, but opted for commercial farming instead of subsistence farming.

The remaining five percent was produced by the country’s estimated 1.3-million subsistence farmers.

FROM PAGE 1 Borchard agrees: “I wanted to impart valuable farming skills to these people and train them to become commercial farmers. Not only would it strengthen the local economy, but it would offer the farmers an opportunity to live off the land.”

Hence, two farming groups with no agricultural skills or experience were registered and given a few hectares of land at no cost at all, and soon under the watchful mentorship of Borchard and with the aid of provincial funding to the value of R95 000 the first crops were planted.

At the time the minister for agriculture in the Western Cape, Gerrit van Rensburg, accompanied by local ward councillors and members of parliament visited the farm.

Van Rensburg expressed his enthusiasm to support the new farmers.

He referred to the project as the beginning of a success story with the potential to create a new economic order in the Western Cape.

After the first crop, profits were still small, but important lessons were learned.

However, in spite of a good second crop in March this year, one of the groups withdrew from the project due to what is suspected by other role players to be in-fighting.

The other group, registered as Mayiphuhle Seskhona farming refused to throw in the towel and is now literally enjoying the fruits of their labour.

“Alfred has taught us everything. We now know how to plant and grow our vegetables and how to fertilise and irrigate. We are even part of the cleaning, storing and processing of the crop,” an excited Lilian Thomas spokesperson of the group, told TygerBurger during our visit.

Just having completed the last of their harvest, they are now eagerly preparing to plant another two or three crops of beans and squash.

the group a sizeable profit.

They have now taken on another partner in the group and can even afford to pay two night-watchmen to guard their crops. Borchard has also agreed to help them expand their farming operation by giving them another hectare of land.

“We are happy and our lives are so much better. The only challenge we face at the moment is the theft of our crops, yet we are excited about the future,” says Thomas.

All things considered, Borchard is satisfied with their progress.

“They are involved with all aspects of farming and well on their way to become successful commercial farmers, providing

that they sustain good management,” he said.

On agreement between all the role players, which includes the Department of Agriculture, Borchard, will for the time being continue to market and sell Mayiphuhle Seskona’s produce on behalf of them.

“This is the arrangement for now, until they have mastered the marketplace trends,” he says.

The future is indeed a rosy place for Lilian and her partners.

The Xhosa word Mayiphuhle Seskona, means to be visibly progressive – the quintessence of what this group has achieved to date.

All smiles for new wheels ESMÉ ERASMUS

T

here was more than a Christmas smile for Cheryl Murray when her family and friends guaranteed that it would be special for her.

Cheryl (39), a resident of the Andries Olivier Quadriplegic Home in Durbanville, has cerebral palsy and is confined to her wheelchair all day, every single day.

But, nothing could prepare her for the broad smile on her beaming face when family and friends surprised her on Saturday with the best Christmas gift – a brand new wheelchair!

She only has the partial use of her left hand.

The control box of her wheelchair broke a few months ago. Although her parents managed to repair it temporarily, her wheelchair was falling apart and needed to be replaced.

Generous She bought this chair about 10 years ago with funds she raised by selling jewellery and knitting she made herself and also with a raffle.

The cost of R66 000 of the new wheelchair was covered with generous cash donations from, among others, her employer and some school friends and family members.

One old school friend from Durbanville donated R20 000 towards Cheryl’s new wheelchair, because years ago, when her own sister was in a wheelchair they could not afford to buy her a new wheelchair, but “now she has all the money in the world, and decided to donate it to this cause”, said her sister, Barbara Louw from Protea Heights, Brackenfell.

Laughter Cheryl’s sister also organised a show at the Barnyard theatre to raise funds for her wheelchair.

Barbara arranged a surprise party to present Cheryl’s new wheelchair to her.

Friends and family members were hiding in the garden, when Cheryl arrived at Barbara’s home to come and “see her new fence”.

Cheryl burst into laughter and joy when she saw the little group gathered in the garden and spotted the new wheelchair.

with a girl in a wheelchair on top. On the side of the cake was a grey cat, representing Cheryl’s cat, Shadow.

TygerBurger earlier reported on Cheryl’s need for a new wheelchair and her love of doing djembe drumming at the Durbanville Children’s Home.

TygerBurger also reported on the incident last year when Cheryl’s laptop was stolen through her bedroom window at the Andries Olivier Quadriplegic Home.

Two laptops were then donated to her by benefactors. She does the administration of the home and is also a keen Facebooker.

Dumping problem continues to irk MAGRIET THERON

The wellbeing of cart horses is the number one priority of the Cart Horse Protection Association.

Illegal dumping of garden refuse and rubble by cart horse drivers remains a problem.

A recent meeting between the Cart Horse Protection Association, council members and Law Enforcement has established that the way forward to the dumping problem is firstly to carefully monitor the allocation of permits to horse and cart operators.

Secondly, it was agreed that those operators who dump rubble should be fined and possibly face losing their permits to operate.

Thirdly the public is encouraged to report any illegal dumping by cart horse owners.

The removal of residents of District 6 in the 1960s has brought a major change in the livelihood of horse and cart traders, who used to be primarily fish, fruit and vegetable vendors.

Since living on the flats, these vendors had to travel much further to markets and as the years went by their businesses changed

from vending to transport of garden refuse and collection of scrap metal.

Instead of these loads being recycled,

many end up being dumped next to the road.

Since 1995 much has been done to monitor and control the horse and cart business. In 2010 a licensing system was introduced and today no trade with a horse and cart is permitted without a licence and a permit.

“My observations are that dumping has worsened of late because of residents making use of horse and carts to dispose of their unwanted household items and rubble, and because many cart operators are simply throwing rubbish onto open spaces and roadsides,” city councillor James Vos said.

He said residents should refrain from this practice because their rubbish will inevitably land up on parks and open spaces and, as a result, ratepayers’ money is wasted by municipal teams having to clean up illegally dumped rubbish.

Gert Steyl, was die eerste van vier om sy graad in die regte te verwerf. Haar ouers, Marian en Johan (saam hier op die foto), het onderskeidelik hul musiek- en BCom-grade verwerf en haar ouer broer, Gerrie, het ook ’n BCom-graad hier voltooi.

A total of 670 cases of missing children and adults were reported to Missing Children SA during 2013, according to their annual statistics released last week.

Organisational spokesperson Nicky Rheeder, says this figure is based on cases reported to Missing Children SA only and does not reflect all the cases reported to the South African Police.

“According to the Missing Persons Bureau, a child goes missing every six hours in our country. If you add this for a year, we look at about 1 460 cases of missing children reported to the South African Police Services every year,” she said.

The cases reported to Missing Children SA, increases every year, she say, not necessarily because more individuals go missing, but also because more people are becoming aware of the organisation and the services it renders.

Between 1 December 2012 and 30 November 2013, 344 adults and 326 children were reported missing with Missing Children SA. Of these, 242 adults and 276 children were subsequently found.

“Therefore we have an overall success rate of 77 %. For the children’s cases alone our success rate is 84 %. It is an unfortunate reality that 3 % of the children found again, were found deceased. Every year we see the success rate decrease – we cannot say for a fact it is because fewer children are found again, or perhaps because more cases are reported to our organisation,” she says.

Eleven children and 27 adults were found deceased this year.

Statistics provided by the organisation reflects 209 persons reported missing in the Western Cape during this same time – the second highest in the country after Gauteng with a figure of 227.

Of these 150 were adults of which 115 were found and 103 were children of which 94 were found.

Generally, children reported missing are grouped in several categories. Run-aways account for 39 % of all cases, whereas 33 % get lost. Kidnappings by strangers account for 8 % of all missing children and parental abductions for 5 %. Children going missing for unknown reasons account for 15 %, where the reasons are not mentioned to the organisation or sometimes the parents do not want to share more information.

“Children run away from home or places of safety for various reasons, such as abuse, conflict at home, rebellion or being offered a better life by strangers or persons befriended over a social network. The grass seems greener on the other side and when they accept these offers, they sometimes

find themselves in a very vulnerable and dangerous place,” Rheeder says.

“When a child is kidnapped by a stranger it is for a host of reasons. They cannot have children of their own, or they lost a child.

Sometimes it is for reasons of revenge and often times for reasons of human trafficking. In this case the child will be used for sex slavery or forced labour,” she adds.

“On a daily basis we are striving to make more and more people aware of the reality of human trafficking. We are sure more cases reported to SAPS as well as to our organisation are because of human trafficking, but at this stage it cannot be proved. According to the International Labour Organisation it is estimated that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year. Furthermore, 32 billion dollars profit is generated annually from human trafficking.”

In the final analysis, children going missing range in age from 0 to 17 years, but mostly in the age group from 13 to 17 years (66 %).

The months with the most cases reported to Missing Children SA were July with 65 cases and August with 68 cases.

The month with the least cases reported was February with only 38 cases.

In the Western Cape 60% of all persons reported missing were Brown, 20% Black Africans, 19% Caucasian and 1% Indian or Asian.

Missing Children SA is a registered NPO that assists the authorities when an individual goes missing in South Africa, for any reason whatsoever.

“We work closely with the South African Police Services and other government bodies as well as other NGOs and private initiatives to assist in the recovery and safe return of any missing person,” says Rheeder.

“Our first tier is that of an emergency response service. We have a national helpline for incident reports and callers are advised on which immediate steps to take in logging the incident officially so as to ensure efficient and timeous action.

“Secondly, by activating a vast national social media network we distribute flyers of missing children, creating mass awareness of the individual and maximising the chances of that child being recovered. Lastly, since prevention is the most efficient way to keep our children safe, we strive to educate both parents/guardians and children on the dangers of abduction and human trafficking. We also liaise with the investigating officers on the case so as to ensure a continuous flow of information between the parents and authorities.”

The organisation’s website www.missingchildren.org.za acts as an emergency report facility as well as being platform for informational and educational material.

Vir 15 jaar lank al stap en sing die sangstudente van die Riana van Wyk-sangskool Kersliedere in al die groot inkopiesentrums om sodoende geld in te samel vir Die Burger-Kersfonds.

Oor die jare het daar al sowat 100 van Riana se sangstudente as vrywilligers opgetree in die program.

Die program is amper ’n uur lank.

Dit gaan uitsonderlik mooi wees met die gewildste Kersliedere wat in drie-deel harmonieë gesing sal word. Dit is iets wat mense nie mag misloop nie.

Vele honger mae gevoed met uitreik Meer as 300 Kaapse kinders is gevoed in die jaarlikse massa-uitreikaksie deur ’n Brackenfellse bediening.

Op 9 Desember het die Jesus to my Rescuebediening sy sogenaamde “One Day Mass Outreach”-dag gehou.

“Die dag het begin met ’n besoek aan Blackheath Educare, waar ons vir ongeveer 100 kinders Sondagskool-boeke uitgedeel, en ’n gekookte maaltyd en vrugte voorsien het,” vertel Jaco van As van die organisasie.

Die besoek is afgesluit met ’n spesiale gebed vir die kinders, asook die toesighouers en Degreene Tucker, die Educare-moeder.

“Hierna het ons Hope in Happy Valley besoek, waar ons eerstens ’n heerlike gekookte maaltyd en vrugte aan die kinders van die

tehuis gegee het. Ons het hier ongeveer 200 Sondagskool-boeke met mooi Bybelstories en inkleurprente aan die kinders versprei.”

Die kinders van Happy Valley het ook maaltye ontvang.

Vandaar het die span aanbeweeg na die Kleinakker-plakkerskamp, waar ’n verdere 70 mense kospakkies en maaltye ontvang het.

“Terwyl die vroue besig was met die kos, het die ander lede van die span toiletware en Sondagskool-boekies en tydskrifte, geborg deur Juig, versprei. Daar was ook tyd vir spesiale gebede en siekes is ook by hul huise besoek.

“Mag elke kind wat op dié dag liefde ontvang het, geseën word,” sê Van As.

Vele honger magies is gevoed met die massa-uitreikdag.

All Star features up­and­coming talents GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

If you’re in the mood for some magical music to get you into the Christmas mood, head for the All Star theatre on Sunday.

Two top vocal talents from the Cape Music Institute, Robin Pieters and Zeldene Macdonald, will be taking centre stage when they host their first concert as headliners.

This will be taking place at the theatre in

the CapeGate centre in Brackenfell from 18:00 for a concert that will also feature Karin Kortje with 7de Laan actress and Hectic 99 presenter Chanelle Davids as MC. Both singers are no strangers to the stage having performed as backing vocalists with Kortje and various other singers on many occasions, Macdonald blew the house down with Jonathan Butler when he was here, but this means much more to them.

“We’ve been in the background too long,”

says Pieters.

“This time we want to do our own thing and show the people that it’s not where you come from, but where your talent can take you, if you have the passion and dedication to pursue your dreams.

“Both of us come from broken homes, less than perfect communities, but we turned our lives around through positive empowerment.

“This is how we want to inspire and moti-

vate others out there.”

Their relationship and ties to the Cape Music Institute are still strong with director Camillo Lombard leading the Top Dog band at this performance.

Pieters is now also the vocal coach at Kensington High where they are planning major cultural activities for the next year.

Tweedens word die redakteur van ’n Kaapse dagblad “herontplooi”, omdat sy op die dag toe haar koerant wél ’n omvoubylaag oor Madiba se dood gepubliseer het, die “vermetelheid” gehad het om Jacob Zuma in ’n hoofstorie te kritiseer. Ondanks ontkenning van die ANC-gesinde eienaar van dié koerantgroep, sluk ’n mens maar swaar aan sy verduidelikings. Derdens kry die SABC se nuusspanne die opdrag om niks in nuusbulletins te wys van die geboe van Zuma tydens die Madiba-gedenkdiens in Soweto nie. Is dié drie gebeure vroeë voorlopers van die onderdrukking van vrye spraak wat vir die SA media voorlê?

Boy cries wolf at checkout Visiting one of the large national grocery retailers today, I was approached by a boy of maybe 13 years carrying a basket with a marked down bread, a few tins of food and a few other items. He asked if I perhaps had a few rand for him as he wanted to also buy chicken. He showed me he had about R20 in coins and a R10.

Obviously I felt sorry for him and said that he can take the chicken and meet me at the till. At the till I paid for his basket and when he left, the cashier said it is the third time today that somebody comes with him to the tills and pay for his items. Please warn other shoppers of this scam.

The sad thing is that I will most probably never again try to help when it may be somebody that really needs some good will.

It is quite embarrassing to be caught in this way.

Kan taxi’s nie ook maar by reëls hou?

Ek is stadig maar seker besig om nou goed dik te raak van taxi’s wat maak net soos en waar hulle wil.

Ek praat nou uitsluitlik van die kruising by Jip de Jager– rylaan en van Riebeekshofweg.

Die stadsraad het ’n klomp geld spandeer en baie netjiese staanplekke vir hulle gemaak, maar dit word net mooi geïgnoreer. Hulle stop waar en wanneer hulle wil en verkieslik op die kruising!

Dit help nie jy toet, praat, gil, vloek, wat ook al nie – jy kry ’n kyk uit ’n blinde oog.

By wie rapporteer ek dit sodat daar hopelik iets gedoen

kan word en dat die mense ’n les geleer kan word?

Ek moet ook egter die inwoners van die bult die skuld gee, want hulle laai hul huishulpe sommer ook daar op die hoek af, want almal staan mos nou daar en wag.

En weet jy, die “merrem” stop sommer ook so op die kruising en gooi ’n vinger vir jou as jy toet!

Kyk maar hoe gaan hulle tekere by verkeersligte waar hulle op die geel streep stop en net mooitjies voor jou indruk wanneer die lig oorslaan om net 100 m verder dood voor jou te stop om iemand op of af te laai.

Ek is terdeë bewus daarvan dat die mense van openbare vervoer gebruik moet maak, maar heng, daar is tog padreëls waarby mens moet hou.

Is dit nou te veel gevra dat ’n taxi by dieselfde reëls as die ander padgebruikers moet hou?

I will take the wind out of your sails On 12 December I went to CapeGate shopping mall. I parked near the entrance to the bank. A very abled but hugely overweight woman parked her vehicle in the disabled bay.

I told her she doesn’t have the required card to park there.

She told me to “eff off” she is friends with management. I then went to security and was told that she is allowed to park there as management knows her and she has a weight problem. This infuriated me even more, because she was seen walking from shop to shop and I feel if she can walk in the mall she can walk from a parking bay to the mall. I am a senior citizen, but CapeGate does not cater for my needs.

They only have moms and tots and disabled.

The next time I see this fat

ass (I’m not thin) park in a disabled bay I will let her tyres down.

Doing right thing at all the wrong places The Fine Drama: Elsa was fined for going 92 in an 80km/h zone on a national road just outside Caledon for overtaking a bus and going 12km over the limit; a fast running pace. It was a R200 fine.

Okay fine she says: I am a responsible citizen. I will pay the fine. There is a bank account number on the fine.

She heard about a government website that said if you pay on time you will get a 50 % discount: www.aarto.gov.za.

Great. Every rand counts, especially this close to Christmas.

On an unusually hot summer day on due date I go to the local post office and queue to pay the fine. Sorry, they say, we handle only local fines. Yes we are a national post office, but only for local fines. You can pay at Spar. Off to the nearest Spar. No sorry you have to be a registered habitual offender to pay this fine. You can only pay it at the Traffic Department.

Off on the road again, and now crawling at a snail’s pace for my sin past Koeberg Road MyCiTi bus roadworks, off to Milnerton Traffic Department.

Here another queue in the heat. They are actually very polite. Sorry we have heard about the 50 % off, but it is not yet in operation, you must pay at Caledon or the bank account.

So into the car again, and then to another bank queue. At last, someone who takes my now soggy fine money.

Die hoogtepunt van die dag was die stryd tussen die TygerBurger-joernaliste en die Bok Radio-omroepers. Die twee mediaspanne het gelykop geëndig deur 130 km per span af te lê.

Die inisiatief is ondersteun deur die Brackenfell-polisie en die Brackenfell-atletiekklub.

“Ons was oorweldig deur die belangstelling van die publiek. Dit is net weer eens ’n bewys die gemeenskap gee om en daar is nog baie mense wat ’n hand, of in dié geval ’n voet, sal uitsteek om ander te help,” sê Laurentius Schoonwinkel.

Local singer has her eyes set on the stars LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

She’s only in high school, but watch out music world, she has her eye on the big time.

Monte Vista’s 15-year-old Jade McAvinchey, who goes to school at Curro in Durbanville, just released her first single and has already been playlisted on radio.

“I have been singing since I was six and it’s all I want,” says the young songstress.

Jade, who was a student at Brackenfell’s Jamrock Academy, explains that she started out singing with bands at the school.

She decided she wanted to start getting serious about her music career though and started looking online for possible bands to join.

That’s when she came across Dale Johnson’s advert for vocal recording and production. She contacted him and within a week of meeting, the two had already recorded her first song, “Gotta go”.

The two wrote the lyrics together, while Dale wrote the music. The song features Dir-

“I want to make it big,” says local singer, Jade McAvinchey.

Since releasing the track, Jade has been featured on Soli Philander’s Taxi Radio and Bush Radio, who have already playlisted her song.

“I want to make it big,” Jade says with stars in her eyes.

Jade is no stranger to performing though.

She has competed in the SA Championships of Performing Arts twice, winning medals both times.

At just seven, she won a silver medal for an original song she wrote about loving her family and pets and earlier this year, she won a gold medal and her team went on to perform in Los Angeles, USA. Two years ago she recorded an album of covers called Following my Heart, which is exactly what the young singer is doing.

She has been performing with other artists in their shows for about four years but has recently started performing on her own.

This year she played at the annual Riebeek Valley Olive Festival, as well as the Water Fees in Hopefield, along with fundraisers and other shows at local pubs and restaurants. “I sing the song when I play gigs and people dance to it,” she says.

Jade will be on stage on Tuesday 31 December at the Boland Cricket New Year’s Big Bash in Paarl, a fundraiser for Boland Cricket.

Jade will make a guest appearance when De Javu performs. Also on stage will be Ashley Pienaar, Jody Williams, MONOX, Alan the car guard, De Javu, D6 Minstrels and Ashur Peterson. The concert starts at 20:30, but there will be children’s cricket on from 10:00 and Ladies and 20/20 cricket on from 15:00.

All staff at Tygerberg praised for their work The spirit of Nelson Mandela and his love for children, as well as the work of doctors, nurses and staff at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, have been celebrated at an interfaith thanksgiving service in Cape Town.

Hundreds of people gathered at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital to light candles and listen to messages and prayers from religious leaders.

Reverend Mpho Tutu, who is Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s daughter, said Mandela always showed his love for children. “Because of that, there is no better place for me to be than to pay tribute to the children and the doctors and nurses who care for them at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.

“Nelson Mandela spread a light over the nation and over our world and has given us a baton to take up and pass on,” said Tutu, who is the executive director of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

Rabbi Malcolm Matitiani prayed for courage and faith to care for sick children.

Sheikh Fuad Hendricks, said Mandela’s spirit would live on. He called for “kindness in our world and to our children”.

Tribute The executive director of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Professor Mariana Kruger, paid tribute to the nurses, as well as the parents of children who are patients at the hospital.

“Your children are our pieces of gold and we really care for them.”

A candle-lighting ceremony was led by Dalene Heyns, the widow of paediatrician and specialist, Dr Louis Heyns, considered a leader at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, where he worked since 1984. Professor Heyns died earlier this year.

“What Mandela was to the nation, Louis was to Tygerberg Children’s Hospital. He gave us his example of care and love,” Professor Kruger said.

Mother, Felicia Martin, who brought her daughter to the service in a wheelchair, said the hospital had cared for her daughter, who had injured her leg after falling under a car.

“They’ve shown her wonderful care,” she said.

Largest More than 17 000 children are admitted to Tygerberg Children’s Hospital every year. It is the largest hospital in the Western Cape caring for children and offers highly specialised services to children, from oncology and infectious diseases to neurology and neonatology.

The thanksgiving ceremony was held by Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital Trust, the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the Patron of Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.

Stor­Age goods for needy As the year comes to a close it is time, once again, for the Stor-Age Create Happiness drive to kick into gear and locals are encouraged to donate their unwanted goods to their nearest Stor-Age store for charities in need.

The annual campaign encourages people to drop off items that they do not use at home such as any unwanted books, clothes, toys and non-perishable items at their nearest Stor-Age store where they are safely stored.

These are then distributed to various charities in need across the country by the organisation The Round Table.

A massive 100m² of goods was collected at Stor-Age stores in the 2012 Create Happiness Drive was were donated to organisations such as the Maranatha Care Centre in Pretoria, which was devastated by a fire

earlier this year, and to Sister Betty Glover, an 83-year-old ordained minister who runs a soup kitchen and chapel from her home in Noordgesig in Soweto.

Stor-Age hopes to surpass the number of goods collected last year and is confident they can reach at least 150m² of goods with the help of the public.

Capetonians can drop their donations off at Store-Age’s Edgemead, City Vault- Maitland, Sea Point, Tokai, Pinehurst, Gardens, Bellville, and Table View branches.

City’s plan for creating more jobs LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

The City of Cape Town aims to create 37 500 jobs in the 2013/14 financial year, through its Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

This is according to a report submitted to the Blaauwberg Subcouncil in their subcouncil meeting recently.

The EPWP aims to create work opportunities through both direct and indirect employment methods.

In the last financial year, (2012/2013) the City created 35 556 EPWP work opportunities, well exceeding their target of 35 000 jobs for the year.

Work opportunities were created through the implementation of 1 100 projects by line departments in various sub councils based on their service delivery mandates.

Most of the EPWP jobs created were for the city’s utility services, with Solid Waste Management creating 10 965 work opportunities.

To date, 118 projects have been submitted by different subcouncils to the EPWP office for this financial year.

These range from general maintenance and cleaning work, to homebased care and social development projects.

These proposals have been logged and forwarded to various line departments for consideration.

The city’s “Policy for the Recruitment and Selection of Workers from the Community by Council and its Service Providers” is currently under review and a workshop was recently held with subcouncils to gain their input on the matter.

The review process is ongoing.

Not trying to be what not LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

“T

hey’re honest songs that aren’t really trying to be anything they’re not.”

That’s how Simon van Gend describes the music of his band, Simon & the Bande à Part.

“They’re all about how it feels to be a white guy growing up in the southern suburbs, growing up in Observatory, somewhere near the beginning of the new millennium,” he explains.

Simon says describing their sound depends on who you ask. “If you ask a radio DJ, they’ll probably say it’s contemporary folk rock,” he says. The band’s refreshingly whimsical and simple sound has also been described as introspective indie/folk/rock.

Simon is joined in the band by drummer, Ross Campbell and Eric Michot on bass.

The band released their third album, Blinking and Breathing, earlier this year after working with Australian producer, Ian Pritchett.

Right sound “We found out about Ian Pritchett through getting to know the music of Angus and Julia Stone, an Australian band,” explains Ross.

“We really loved the sound of their album, it was really beautifully simple and acoustic and had loads of space,” he says, adding: “We in fact used their album as sound reference for our previous album and this time we thought, well let’s just try and get hold of the actual producer.”

The band sent him an email and he replied. “We sent him songs and he loved the songs,” Ross says.

With the help of their financiers, Jump Media, in Dubai, the band brought Ian to South Africa.

Three songs off the album, namely the title track, “Blinking and Breathing”, “Am I the Worm?” and

“Complications”, have been submitted to radio stations and 18 radio stations across the country have already play-listed one or all three of the songs.

Locally, their songs can be heard on MFM, Radio Helderberg, UCT Radio, Bok Radio and Two Oceans Vibe.

“We feel quite special being on there because they play mostly Afrikaans music, but they were happy to play our songs,” Simon says of Bok Radio. He says he was hesitant to contact Afrikaans stations at first but realised that his music would touch people no matter what the language.

Feelings “I guess I don’t really consciously write about anything in particular,” Simon says of his songwriting.

“When I write a song, it usually comes up out of some kind of difficult feeling I am feeling,” he says, adding: “For example I’ll be sitting at home, feeling lonely or anxious about something, and I’ll pick up my guitar, mostly as a way to kind of soothe myself, I guess.”

Simon says for him, songwriting is the process of taking something that’s difficult and transforming it into something that’s playful and joyful and inspiring.

“There’s kind of an alchemy that happens in art where difficult feelings get transformed into something beautiful,” he says, adding: “That’s basically what happens when I write songs. I sit there with this feeling and it throws up emotions ... and I just kind of let my soul do the talking and the words stream out.

“That’s what ends up being the song and somewhere in that process I catch an idea that sums up what I’m feeling and that becomes maybe the chorus, if there is a chorus,” Simon explains.

A proud moment was shared when the staff members of the Fisantekraal Centre for Development (FCD) next to the Durbanville taxi rank, volunteers and students gathered for the graduation ceremony on 6 December to celebrate the successful completion of courses during the second half of 2013.

The FCD is a community project offering affordable training to the unemployed.

A total of 61 certificates were issued for various courses, including Basic Computers, Office Administration, Basic Job Readiness and Bake for Profit.

Four students also successfully completed the Bake for Profit course in December 2013, receiving generous donations of cake flour from Premier Foods, the designers of the course.

Rosina Mlata from Fisantekraal was nominated student of the term for successfully maintaining sales of R300 per day.

A 12-week office administration course (mornings only) covers basic to advanced computer training and office practice.

A Bake for Profit course, which consists of two days per week for eight weeks, teaches baking and the business skills needed to start your own baking business and earn an income.

The FCD seeks to empower the unemployed through training and recognises the need to train people holistically.

All courses include courses in life skills and discipleship training, the latter of which is optional.

Rookie driver a 9­year­old ace Charl Michael Visser raced his RKT Zanardi (no 77) go-kart in the Maxterino schoolboy class (aged 9-13) in the 2013 season on provincial and national level.

The nine-year-old pupil from Kenridge Primary School received the following awards at the Karting Awards held recently.

He finished third in the Maxterino championship in Western Province.

He was also voted as the Rookie Driver of the Year in Maxterino class.

He placed fifth national in the Maxterino championship and was again voted as Rookie Driver of the Year on national level.

But, this is only one side of the story. Charl Michael could not achieve all this without the dedicated commitment of his mechanic.

Thando Mnyanda, a 30-year-old man from a township in East London named Mdantsane assisted him with all his go-kart setups and fine tuning.

Thando came from East London in 2008

looking for a job.

Thando’s services was required in the beginning of the year to assist Charl Michael as his go-kart mechanic by building all hiskarts and doing all the setups for the chassis.

“I still remember that I built Charl Michaels’s kart on a Friday night before the Saturday race day after he had a big accident and the kart was badly bent. I worked until 22:00 that Friday evening at the track and he still tested it in the pits to see if it was working.

“The best part is that Charl won that regional event the next day with this kart.

“I have seen this boy grow in the last 12 months to be an extremely competitive gokart driver and we work well together. “ I am so proud of his achievements in his first year of Maxterino karting but must also give him credit for all the commitment and practise he puts in to his gokarting,” Thando said.

Charl Michael Visser and Thando Mnyanda are a winning combination on the provincial and national karting scene.

Africa, it is perhaps fitting to publish the name of the last runner to cross the finish line at Saturday’s Avbob 15 km Road Race hosted by Tygerberg Athletic Club in Table View. Vincent Kingswell (78) from VOB Running Club finished the race in 2:28:28. The cut-off time was 2:30:00. According to one of the organisers, Leon Thelander, there were 1028 runners who finished in the allotted time.

ie Transagulhas-uitdaagvaart vir rubberbote is al bestempel as die taaiste en langste rubberbootwedvaart in die wêreld. Vanjaar word dié vaart vir die 26ste keer aangebied en soos gewoonlik sal die jaers, die bote en die enjins tot die uiterste getoets word.

Meer as dertig spanne, waaronder ’n paar uit die noordelike voorstede, het reeds ingeskryf vir die 2013-wedvaart wat oor vyf dae en 900 km beslis word. Hierdie uitmergelende wedvaart, wat jaarliks aangebied word deur die Agulhas Inflatable Boat Club (AIBC), begin op 28 Desember in Plettenbergbaai en eindig op Nuwejaarsdag 1 Januarie in die Strand.

Die plaaslike spanne wat gaan deelneem is FJ Buter en Dian Beyers van Brackenfell, J Matthee en M van Geems van Kuilsrivier, Nickie Smit en Dewald Theron van Durbanville, Christiaan en Wardo Kriel van Kuilsrivier en Stefan Lindeque en Tony Ingram van Melkbosstrand.

Toe Sparks Esterhuyzen, bekende inwoner van Hermanus, die eerste keer met die idee vorendag gekom het om dié rubberbootresies aan te bied, het baie mense die idee

afgeskiet en gesê dit is veels te gevaarlik en haas onmoontlik. Ten spyte van talle waarskuwings het drie spanne vir die eerste Transagulhas-uitdaagvaart in 1988 ingeskryf. Vandag, 26 jaar later, is die wedvaart nog net so gewild soos in die vroeër jare met baie spanne wat jaar ná jaar inskryf.

Klasse Die spanne kan vir een van vier klasse inskryf: die standaardklas; die nuweling-standaardklas; die professionele klas en die gemodifiseerde klas.

Die wenners van die 2012-wedren het almal aangedui dat hulle weer vanjaar die branders gaan aandurf. Hulle is: J. Matthee en M. van Geems (standaardklas-wenners, geborg deur Van Loveren); Peter Groenenstein en Nichol Parr (nuweling-standaardklas-wenners, geborg deur Valumax, Amigos en Excellparts); Wimpie Ackermann en Whitey Louw (professioneleklas-wenners, geborg deur Imperial Cargo); en Dave Barnett en Tjaart Oosthuizen (gemodifiseerdeklas-wenners).

Die bote moet elke dag verskeie kontrolepunte bereik voordat hulle na die eindpunt kan beweeg. Op dag een, skof een (28 Desember), begin die wedvaart by Hobie-strand en eindig dit by Santos-strand in Mosselbaai.

Die strand-kontrolepunte op die roete is by Swartvlei, Wildernis, Glentana, Grootbrakrivier en Kleinbrakrivier. Die eerste skof is die langste van die resies en strek oor 189 km.

Op dag twee (29 Desember) vertrek die bote van Mosselbaai na Stilbaai. Hulle moet by Vleesbaai en Gouritsriviermond se strande aandoen voordat hulle na die eindpunt kan jaag. Dag twee se skof is 86 km lank.

Afstand Op dag drie op 30 Desember word ’n afstand van 161 km afgelê. Die spanne trek die oggend weg uit Stilbaai, vanwaar hulle aandoen by Witsand en Waenhuiskrans voordat hulle by Struisbaai op die hoofstrand eindig.

Die vierde en vyfde skof vind plaas op Ou-

jaarsdag. Die bote sal uit Struisbaai vertrek en aandoen by Die Damme, Pearly Beach en Uilenskraalmond, voordat hulle by Hermanus se ou hawe eindig.

Ná die Koning van die Branders-kompetisie het die spanne ’n paar ure om herstel- en instandhoudingswerk te doen voordat hulle vir die aandresies aanmeld in Gansbaai. Die aandresies eindig by Hermanus se nuwe hawe. Die afstand op dag vier is 135 km.

Die finale skof van die Transagulhas-uitdaagvaart oor 131 km begin om 09:00 by Hermanus se nuwe hawe. Die spanne moet by Onrus, Kleinmond en Pringlebaai aandoen voordat hulle Strand se kant toe mik. Maar eers moet hulle ’n finale “verby-jaag”-kontrolepunt by Gordonsbaai se hawe doen voordat hulle na die eindpunt op Strand kan jaag. ’n Feestelike atmosfeer sal by elke oornagpunt heers, met die sanger Andries Vermeulen wat die skare op die strand by elke eindpunt sal vermaak, terwyl die bote ingewag word. Elke dag om 13:00 vind ’n Koning van die Branders-kompetisie plaas wat gewoonlik duisende toeskouers lok.
