WATER WEEK: LEARNERS LEARN HOW TO BE WATER WISE

Saving every drop CARINA ROUX

G

randWest celebrated Water Week with an event held on Friday which included educational talks and a cleanup of the Elsies River canal. Learners from Goodwood College, Boundary Primary and Kalksteenfontein Primary schools joined in along with GrandWest staff and service providers, the City of Cape Town’s Water Demand Management, City Parks department and sponsors Afriserv and WasteMart. Johan de Villiers, operational manager at GrandWest, asked learners to take a sip from the (empty) water bottles in the goody bags handed out to them to illustrate what it will be like without water. At GrandWest they use grey water for the smaller gardens and 440 000 litres are recycled from the ice rink for irrigation of the lawns. By adding flow restrictors to shower heads they have reduced the monthly water usage by 30 to 35%, said De Villiers. Big business should do their bit, but he reminded learners that saving should start at home. He referred to the influx of people moving to the Western Cape and said our dams will not be sufficient to sustain the city’s population by 2019. Since it takes five or more years to build a new dam, we don’t have enough time and need to change our mindset, he said. Bongeka Ndikinda, environmental officer at GrandWest, said besides installing flow restrictors on all taps, they do not wash cars, make use of artificial flowers and harvest water from the air handling units throughout the complex. As of Monday 20 March the City declared a water crisis since dam levels are around 19% – enough for only about 90 days, said Johannes Prins from the City of Cape Town’s Water Demand Management department. He encouraged the learners to become water ambassadors. Everyone should be aware and on the lookout for leaks – at school, at your home, at work and in the bathroom, the toilets and the kitchen, he said. He gave a handy tip to check whether your

Instead of just using a bucket in the shower, he suggests getting an old-fashioned wash tub to stand in and then using the water afterwards to flush the toilet. He added we should all reduce our consumption – use a cup to brush your teeth and don’t flush the toilet so often, citing: “if it’s

yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down”. Maxwell Dingaan, an environmental educator from the City, reminded that although 70% of earth is water, 97% thereof is sea water. To put things in perspective, he said: “Of the 3% left, 2% is frozen, so in reality there is only 1% for all human beings (and animals) to live on”.

Using a cup and closing the tap when brushing your teeth can save as much as 20 litres; doing the same while shaving, saves as much as 40 litres. The City’s share call number for reporting anything from a burst pipe to wastage is 086 010 3089, or SMS any water problems to 31373. V What is your opinion on this article?
