Vlamme betyds gekeer Kaapstad se reddings dienste het Maandag ’n brand geblus wat omstreeks 13:00 uitgebreek het toe geperste papierbale op die perseel van Cape Waste in Parow aan die brand geslaan het. Die vlamme het vinnig deur die perseel versprei nadat daar skynbaar ’n kortsluiting by een van die maatskappy se baalpersmasjiene plaasgevind het. erskeie gesinne in Ruyterwacht was die afgelope naweek sonder water ná ’n pypdief of -diewe by verskeie huise in dié dorp toegeslaan en koperpype gesteel het. Daar is by so baie as vier huise toegeslaan en die inwoners was lank sonder water. Monica van Pletzen van Langenhovenstraat het verlede Vrydag net ná 04:00 wakker geword toe sy ’n gekap hoor. “Dit was nogal vir my snaaks dat iemand daai tyd van die oggend sou kap en ons het opgestaan om te gaan kyk wat aangaan. Toe
ons buite kom, kon ons niks sien nie en is weer by die huis in. “Ná so rukkie hoor ons toe die kanthekkie klap. Vir my was dit snaaks, want vroeër die dag was die tuindienste by ons huis en ek het seker gemaak die hek is gesluit, so ons was onmiddellik op ons hoede,” sê Van Pletzen. Toe hulle buite kom, het hulle gesien een pyp staan los teen die muur. “By nadere ondersoek het ons gevind die koperpype is tot teen die fondament van die huis afgekap. Ons was die hele Vrydag en ’n groot gedeelte van Saterdag sonder water. “Hierdie voorval het gebeur kort ná ons ons hond weens ouderdom moes uitsit,” sê
Van Pletzen. Asof dit nie genoeg was nie, het die pypdief waarskynlik oor Van Pletzen se heining geloer en gevind die bure het ook nie ’n hond nie. “Ons vermoed hy het op ons hondehok gestaan en in die bure se agterplaas ingekyk. Toe het hy die vermetelheid om Saterdagoggend terug te kom en hul pype ook te kom steel,” sê sy. Faizel Adams, ’n ander inwoner van Ruyterwacht, sê dit lyk vir hom of boewe nou nie meer motors teiken nie, maar pype. “Hulle besef nie hoeveel skade hulle aanrig nie. Wat vir hulle ’n klein bedraggie is, kos uiteindelik vir die huiseienaars ’n klomp geld. Ek weet van nog twee voorvalle
waar mense se krane en pype gesteel is,” sê Adams. Luidens ’n verklaring deur die Stad Kaapstad word miljoene rande spandeer om gesteelde koperpype te vervang. “Kaapstad het geen kopermyne nie, maar R77 miljoen se koper verlaat die hawe elke jaar,” lui die verklaring. Kapt. Daphne O’Reilly, polisiewoordvoerder, sê die afgelope maand is geen voorvalle van koperdiefstal aangemeld nie, maar dit beteken nie dit gebeur nie. “Ons wil ’n beroep op inwoners doen om voorvalle dadelik by die polisie aan te meld. Dit help ons om vas te stel waar die groot probleme met koperdiefstal is,” sê O’Reilly.

ie polisie in Bothasig het meer gekry as wat hulle verwag het toe hulle onlangs op ’n klag van opsetlike saakbeskadiging gereageer het. Volgens ao. Jacques Mostert, polisiewoordvoerder, is konstt. Reggie Mars en Jonathan Kriel geroep na ’n huis waar iemand glo besig was om ’n deur oop te skop. “Toe hulle op die toneel kom, vind hulle dat dit familielede was wat onder mekaar baklei. Al was daar ’n deur afgeskop, wou nie een van die familie ’n klag teen die ander aanhangig maak nie,” sê Mostert. Omdat die huis se voordeur buite werking was, moes die beamptes van ’n agterdeur gebruik maak om in die huis te kom. “Toe hulle om die een hoek van die huis kom, sien hulle ’n wendy-huis in die agterplaas staan. Langs die huis was potte met dagga en die polisie doen toe navraag oor wie in die huis woon. Die persoon wat vir die oopskop van die deur verantwoordelik was, sê toe hy woon in die huis en dat die plante syne is. Volgens hom was hy nie bewus daarvan dat die kweek van dagga onwettig is nie,” sê Mostert. Die 29-jarige verdagte is in hegtenis geneem en het in die hof verskyn. Mostert sê wat die verdagte se verduideliking onwaarskynlik maak, is die feit dat hy voorheen op dwelmverwante klagte in hegtenis geneem is.

Parow Police have again been stained by the arrest of an officer on charges of corruption, dealing in drugs, possession of drugs and possession of stolen property. The 34-year-old officer was arrested at his house last week Wednesday and already appeared in court. He was released on R5000 bail and pending investigation the case will continue on 30 September. His arrest follows various similar incidents in the province after Western Cape Police conducted crime intelligence driven operations last week. These operations focused on alleged corrupt relations between police officers and other individuals in society. Says provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk: “After extensive investigations, three members were arrested during the past week. The other two are from Strand and Macassar. More arrests of members are imminent”. “The management in the Western Cape has vowed to root out criminal elements within its ranks and we trust that these arrest will send a strong message to other

Corrupt members among the police must know that they will be exposed for what they are.” Cannon goes on to lament new and young members who might be unlucky enough to end up working with a corrupt member. “They might be drawn in and see they can make more money, and in doing so they would tarnish the rest of their lives.” In 2014, 12 members from Parow police were arrested for fraud and corruption. n die koue oggendure durf Deon Daniels (47) die dag aan. Die son skyn nog nie, maar dit maak nie veel saak nie. Dit is altyd pikdonker vir hom. Die voëls lui nietemin die dag in met hul vrolike deuntjies. Hy klim om 05:00 in ’n trein op Malmesbury, want hy verpes dit om laat te wees vir sy werk. Deon glimlag terwyl die trein stadig wieg en na ’n tydjie voel hy die eerste sonstraal op sy wang. Hy het ’n werk! Hy bedel nie in die strate nie! Teen 08:00 kom die blinde man uiteindelik by sy werk in Parow aan. Cane Quality Products voorsien werk vir hom en meer as 10 ander blindes. Verlede week het TygerBurger in die berig “Plea for work space” die nie-winsgewende organisasie se groot werkruimte-uitdaging gestel. Daar werk tans agt blinde werknemers in die sitkamer van ’n Parow-weldoener, Rita Hattingh. Hulle weet nie meer na wie om uit te reik nie, want elke poging is ’n doodloopstraat. Als is nie verlore nie, reken Deon, want die regte persoon kan die berig lees en ’n werklike verskil maak in die lewens van tientalle mense. Iemand kan ’n plek voorsien waar die werknemers van Cane Quality Products hul rottangwerk kan verrig sonder om elke nou en dan koppe te stamp. “Ja,” lag Deon, “ons sal albei gelyk afbuk om iets op te tel en dan is daar ’n kop-teenkop-botsing.” Deon en sy kollegas kom klaar met waaraan hul gewoond is, maar hulle droom van ’n ordentlike plek om in te werk. Women hosted at spring day Women from all over the northern suburbs arrived with boundless excitement at the Portuguese Club Hall in Milnerton recently during the De Grendel Lions Club’s Ladies Spring Day. ore cancer patients receiving effective contemporary cancer treatment, is the outcome we seek,” says Trevor Sparks, training director at Elekta, the Swedish manufacturer of specialist oncology radiotherapy and radiosurgery equipment. Since opening their advanced medical training facility at Cape Gate Oncology centre in October last year, they have already successfully trained 80 medical professionals throughout Africa, on the use of the digital linear accelerator, of which four are in use at Tygerberg Hospital. The digital linear accelerators allow for limited radiation exposure of normal tissue to reduce side effects. Trainees included medical physicists, engineers and radiation therapists from South Africa and beyond. “Our main objective is to address the shortage of trained radiation professionals in Africa. In fact it is critical, because not only are these machines dangerous if not used correctly, but the lack of clinicians and equipment-trained radiotherapy professionals can impede the delivery of radiation therapy services,” he says. The medical training facility is a public/ private partnership between Elekta, Tygerberg Hospital and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and is equipped
with non-clinical Elekta radiation therapy, brachytherapy, oncology information management and treatment planning. Sparks says an agreement signed with Tygerberg Hospital last week will allow trainees to receive hands-on training. “This is a huge step forward in that trainees that are part of the clinical education programme at the hospital, will have the unique opportunity to come here and do practical training on our systems,” he says. Sparks says the access that cancer patients in low-income countries have to radiotherapy equipment is unacceptably low. “More such machines are needed in the public health systems of especially African countries,” he says. “Therefore we are committed to making radiotherapy more accessible and continue to invest in training and education on the continent.” According to prof. Hannah Simmonds, head of radiation oncology at Tygerberg Hospital, the impact of cancer diagnoses is ever increasing on the African continent. In ten years it will have doubled from 600 000 to over a million. Tygerberg Hospital’s radiation oncology unit is one of only two state units furnished with advanced oncology radiotherapy equipment to serve around four million people in the Western Cape, treating around 2500 patients a year, with an increase of 300 year on year.

There’s an aspect of everyone’s heritage to explore this week during the Iziko Museum’s in_Herit Festival. The theme is 18th century fashion with a contemporary African twist. It has been planned to explore exciting ways to grow the audience for fash-
ion, culture and heritage in Cape Town that showcases 43 fashion design students, and aims to allow diverse museum public access to a unique cultural event. The museums, too, house many inspiring and enthralling exhibitions. African Dinosaurs – always a hit with children – is on show at the Iziko South African Museum. Exhibitions at the Iziko South African National Gallery provide a multi-layered visual feast ranging from historical painting and sculpture to contemporary art. Red in the Rainbow, Singing Freedom and Simon Allen’s installation, Labels – showcased at the Slave Lodge – are poignant narratives that inspire. You Strike a Rock at the Iziko Koopmans-De Wet House marries current narratives of empowerment within the historical context of women as activists throughout time. Heritage festival to celebrate local cultures The exciting annual Tygerberg Heritage Festival is coming to Bellville for the fourth time. The event is jointly organised by Bold Moves and MES Cape Town, the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) and the Greater Tygerberg Partnership, with support from various sponsors such as Protea Toyota, Parow High School, Middestad Mall and the Parow Centre, among others. The festival’s theme is “Building Bridges” and it focuses on just that: strengthening ties between locals, businesses and organisations irrespective of race, sex, age, faith, sexual orientation and social, educational, economic and cultural background. In line with celebrating Heritage Day on 24 September this month, the festival kicked off with their first auditions for the popular Tyg-
erberg Talent competition on Saturday 17 September at the Middestad Mall in Bellville. The second audition will take place on Saturday 1 October from 10:00 to 14:00 at the Parow Centre. The festival’s purpose is to recognise and celebrate the Tygerberg’s vibrant cultural diversity and promote racial reconciliation through arts and sport. The festival takes place with six big events over six days between 17 September and 30 October, with a range of diverse activities including the talent show, a cultural day, a cook-off session, the “Let’s Talk & Awards” event and even an “All Nations” five-a-side football tournament, and more. magine creating a film – from script to finished product – in just 48 hours. Not only did Welgemoed film maker Desmond Denton and his crew pull this off, but they ended up taking home three awards in the process. Their film Infidel, produced as part of the Cape Town 48 Hour Film Project, won the competition’s award for best title sequence, best supporting actress and audience favourite. “It’s an international competition that takes place across the world. It’s been running for the last few years,” Desmond explains of the 48 Hour Film Project which sees film crews compete locally for a chance to represent their city at Filmapalooza 2017, the competition’s official awards ceremony. Desmond explains that the mad dash film making weekend starts with a draw between 18:00 and 19:00 on the Friday night where teams are given a genre. They are also given a predetermined prop, name and line that has to appear in their film.
‘Trust me blindly’ He points out that his cast and crew of about 50 people, who included stars Amalia Uys, Greg Kriek, Bjorn Walter Steinbach, Auriol Hays, Rudolph Faurie, Storm Barry, Johan Jordaan, Arina Le Roux and Mishka Patel, had to be fully on board before the time without an inkling of what they’d be doing. “They had to trust me blindly.” This also meant being over-prepared with props and costumes for any number of possible themes. To help save time, Desmond sent team leader Rudolph to the draw in the CBD, while he assembled the crew at their base camp, Sweet Well, in Somerset West. The Infidel team drew the “detective” genre and had to incorporate a spade, a librarian named Sam or Samantha and the line: “I’ve never seen that before.”
Rudolph sent the details through and raced back to Sweet Well, while the writing team got cracking on their story from 19:00. The actors were given their scripts at 21:00, before they started filming at 22:00. By 07:00 the next morning the footage was ready for postproduction, which included music by composer Ebrahim Mallum, editing, and of course rendering, which with a 4K film, can take some time.
Soldout screenings With limited shooting time, the team had to work through the night. They were busy with a scene with Mishka outside at 04:00, when they ran into some interesting sound issues. “The roosters on the farm decided it was time to wake everyone up.” Eventually the scene was shot outside with the sound recorded inside the building. The film has already enjoyed three sold-out screenings at Cinema Nouveau, but as many fans haven’t had a chance to see it yet, they’ll be presenting another screening at “the scene of the crime” at Sweet Well restaurant at the end of the month. Desmond says the evening includes a themed dinner and guests will be encouraged to dress up. Desmond is already working on his next project, the opening or proof of concept of Sirkel van Noodlot, a film adaptation of the ST Potgieter novel of the same name. The book deals with human trafficking and Desmond hopes to turn it into a full-length feature film. He’s also finishing off the pilot for his new apocalyptic television series, Spelonk. Set in a dystopian Cape Town, the series is about “a future we don’t want to see”. He hopes to have the show in production by next year. Undercover drug bust A
n undercover crime prevention operation under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick Jacobs, station commander of the Bothasig police, recently yielded good results. During the operation two men, aged 18 and 22, were arrested for dealing in drugs and being in possession of drugs. Both suspects are residents of Richwood. The initial arrests were for dealing, but when the premises of the suspects were searched, it was found that they were also in possession of drugs which were not used in the selling process. A large quantity of dagga as well as a smaller quantity of magic mushrooms was seized by police. The street value of the drugs taken off the street is approximately R20 000.

On Monday 12 September at about 16:20 two suspects broke into a house in Joyce Street, Goodwood. It is alleged that the suspects broke the sliding door to gain entry and stole a 42inch Panasonic television, covered it in a blanket and left on foot.

The popular race is based loosely on the like-named television show, The Amazing Race, but differs in its intentions and efforts. This year, 20 teams of four to five members each – as well as various organisations from across the northern suburbs – will compete by travelling from one organisation to the next in an attempt to complete obstacles or to render a service. These obstacles are varied and could range from painting the buildings or parts thereof, to processing foods, cleaning premises or selling food coupons in the street to collect money for charities. “In short, the organisation attends one meeting with the Amazing GRace organisers, discusses the need at their organisation
and provides the needed materials for the job,” says Hewitt de Jager, founder of HewLin Compassion, an NPO based in Kraaifontein. “We then provide the manpower ... to complete the task or render the service.” They are dedicated to uplifting the lives of people and are also the annual organiser of the event. The success of the event is based on four components, he adds. These are registering a team of four or five members. Then, organisations must attend at least one meeting with the organisers. Thirdly the “Amazing Volunteers” (AVs) get to facilitate certain pit stops during the event, so people need to sign up if they wish to volunteer on the day. As jy hom nie gaan deel nie, is dit wys om te “rantsoeneer” – soos in ’n blokkie of rytjie nou en die res stuksgewys later. Daar was ’n tyd toe ek maar moeilik vasgesteek het by net een blokkie. Dis darem lank gelede! Dit was seker maar ’n keuse tussen selluliet of selfbeheersing, en mettertyd het die soettand gekwyn. Versoeking se gesig het intussen verander. Ek het ’n gesonder verslawing gevind – die lyf ter wille. Draf was die laaste tien jaar of wat my voorkeur. Ook sodat ek nog daai blokkie chocolate mag geniet sonder te veel skuldgevoelens. In Februarie vanjaar knou ’n pyn in my linkervoet my drafplanne vir 2016. Fietsry word die alternatief. Eers op my trap-der-stilstand voor die TV deur die winter se vroegdonker-aande en nou die laaste maand of wat verken my bergfiets Joostenberg se grondpaaie saam met my drafklub se Dis ’n mooi rustige MTB-groepie (vir die beseerdag, die des en agterryers). Toe my wekker Sondag om 04:00 afgaan, was daar ’n oomblik se wyfeling, maar nee, ek het mos my ontsnaproete uitgewerk – sou by die 14 km-merker kan uitval en nog kan terugstap na die eindpunt in Groenpunt. Dis ’n mooi dag, die geselskap vloei en by die 14 km-merk stap ons mos nou eers lekker. En by 24 km is mos ’n afsnypunt en ’n bus ... Amper ses en ’n half uur ná ons weggespring het, stap ons verby die 42,2 km-eindpunt. Maandagoggend rol ek uit die bed; kom met moeite orent. My bene voel of hulle aan die verkeerde lyf geskroef is, en ook nie te vas nie. Ai tog, slim vang sy baas! – Carina Roux

Hair affair: rules teach discipline I haven’t really followed the latest hair debacle, though I recall there being similar incidents in the past. I agree 100% with Linda (“Kinders moet reëls nakom”, TB, 14 September). As a former Fairbairn College parent with friends who are current parents, their children and my girls were sent home on numerous occasions, including having to sit detention for weeks on end regarding
hair issues. The code of conduct existed before some of us were born. It states everything clearly, and may I add, it’s issued almost a year before the learner even knows whether he/she will be excepted at the school. Our children should be taught the importance of rules and punctuality. It teaches them discipline and responsibility. I would like to stress that I do not condone racism on any level. ANONYMOUS Parow
Revive the NHW, street committees Being an informed South African means to be faced with news reports of high crime rates that affect us all – without discrimination. Perhaps it is time to think about safety, and more importantly; what we can do about it. Sexual offences have seen a 3.2% decline and women remain particularly vulnerable in this regard. The latest crime statistics further reveal a 4.9% rise in murders while car hijacking saw a 14% rise. Among others, driving under the influence has also increased and is up by 11%. It’s no secret that our police are underresourced; this is the result. South Africa has a centralised police force, while many other countries have implemented a decentralised approach to policing. In our case, the tide seems to be taking us the other way as government wants to centralise even the Metropolitan Police. So it may be a long time before we see adequate policing which will deter crimes and prevent repeat offences. There is no substitute for effective policing, but there are a few things that
you can do to avoid being a victim of crime: 1. Who are your local policing authorities? Take time to get to know the police officers at the station in your precinct. Get their contact details and find out where the hotspots are in your area. 2. What crimes are most popular in your area? If you know what crimes are being committed most frequently, you can make an effort to avoid being a target. 3. Do you have a street committee? If not, it’s time to start one and do it on a social media group, for quick communication. Get your neighbours to sign up to a WhatsApp or Facebook group where you can share alerts to possible criminal activity in your neighbourhood. 4. Join the local community policing forum. You and I each have a role to play in our own safety. Sharing information about activity in your area will help keep a lookout for criminal activity. 5. Talk about it: get whatever forums you’re on to hold meetings and where it’s useful, get in touch with your local media so they can share the message to other community members that there is a platform they can join. There is no substitute for a nimble, capable and well-resourced police service. These action steps are not in any way able to compensate for the role that police officers play nor are they meant to encourage any vigilantism. That said, they will go a long way in helping you monitor your and your family’s safety. Auxiliary policing forums and neighbourhood watches are our best bet until such time as we see an effective policing service. Film highlights the plight of doctors Anew film which documents the crazy hours junior doctors have to work in South Africa will give the public a glimpse into the gruelling pressures the more than 5000 junior doctors have to face every day. Doc-U-Mentally – last doctors standing made its debut at the Jozi film festival this past weekend. Bellville’s Francois Wahl, a chartered accountant with a passion for filmmaking, directed and produced the film and believes the title is apt since, “junior doctors must be insane to work under the conditions they do,” he says. “I was inspired to tell the story after experiencing almost first-hand what these young doctors go through,” he explains, adding: “My father, my wife, my brother and many of my friends are in the healthcare profession and let me tell you, the effects of sleep deprivation and the hostile environment they work in have damaging repercussions – and it’s this that I wanted to bring home to the viewer.” The film shows five different doctors from vastly diverse backgrounds, during five different calls, with very little director’s influence from Francois. The main focus was to show the race against time for these doctors and how working 30-hour shifts impacts their mood, performance, stress and anxiety levels as well as their personal safety. The movie, which is set mainly at Ngwelezane Hospital in Empangeni (KwaZulu-Natal), is not for the fainthearted and shows real-life scenes of stabwounds, gashes that must be sown up, near drownings, and everything in be-

God het vir my die talent gegee om te hardloop en ek wil dit gebruik.” Sy droom van deelname aan die Olimpiese Spele is gebore op Sondag 11 September toe hy ’n goue medalje gewen het tydens die Cell C Day of Races in Kaapstad oor 5 km met ’n ongelooflike tyd van slegs 16:06. Hy was eerste in die Young, Fast and Freeafdeling vir o.18-deelnemers. Slegs sowat twee en ’n half minuut staan tussen hierdie wentyd en die kwalifiserende tyd van 13:23 van die Olimpiese Spele, “Hier by die kinderhuis streef ons daarna om elke kind met ’n droom toe te rus. Om die 5 km in 13:23 te hardloop sit nie in enige ou se skoene nie, maar ons gaan saam met Bronwyn droom – en ons gaan hom ondersteun so ver ons kan,” sê sy. Players bring ’n eerste op planke LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl
D
ie Milnerton Players sal hul eerste Afrikaanse produksie nog dié naweek op die planke bring. En wie beter om die regie te behartig as die bekroonde teaterveteraan Mari Mocke, wat van die ouderdom van 13 al gehore vermaak. Met die help van die akteurs Hanno Fourie van Parklands, Ilse van Niekerk van Durbanville en Anton Schäfer van Pinelands, gaan Mari die bekende Chris Barnard-toneelstuk Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa aanbied. Mari is ’n groot aanhanger van Chris Barnard se werk en toe die Milnerton Players vir haar gevra het om ’n Afrikaanse toneelstuk by hul teater op te voer, het sy teruggekeer na haar eie teks vir Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa wat sy vir R1,50 by ’n boekwinkel in Port Elizabeth in 1964 gekoop het. Dit was Barnard se eerste drama wat daardie jaar ook vir die eerste keer gepubliseer is. “Dit is in die absurde genre wat daardie tyd by sommige dramaturge gewild was,” vertel Mari. “Die hele teks het so tot my gespreek en ek het dit nog nooit opgevoer gesien nie.” Alhoewel sy baie tekste gelees het om die uitdaging vir ’n Afrikaanse produksie waar te maak, vertel Mari dat sy oor en oor teruggegaan het na Barnard se stuk. “Dit het hierdie pragtige klimaks op die einde waar die pa sy seun eindelik aanvaar.” Pa, maak vir my ’n vlieër, Pa vertel die storie van ’n enkellopende middeljarge man, sy bejaarde ma wat soms aan demensie ly en ’n jong man wat in hul lewens kom. “Dit is die verlange van die hoofkarakter, Org, wat soek na die betekenis van die lewe, waarom die hele teks tot my gespreek het.” Mari sê dat hierdie soektog na vrede en liefde tipies is van die absurde genre. In dié stuk woon Org en sy ma in ’n armoedige woonstelletjie en sy domineer sy lewe. Maar Org, wat nog nie vrede gevind het met wie hy is nie, verlang om ’n seun te hê. “Dan maak hy stadig op ’n dag kennis met die jong man wat kom besoek aflê en vir hom sê dat hy sy seun is.” Of hy nou wel Org se kind is of nie, of eintlik ’n regte persoon is, is vir die gehoor om te besluit. “Dit is wat my hoendervleis gegee het,” vertel Mari. Die toneelstuk self is heeltemal anders as wat Mari nog aangepak het, en is by tye soms gewelddadig met al die aksie in die storie.
Mari se ma het ook amateurtoneel gespeel en sy’t haar teaterdebuut as klein meisietjie in 1949 saam met Brian Brooke gemaak. Mari onthou tot hoe haar skoolhoof vir haar soms oggende afgegee het by die skool sodat sy repetisies kon bywoon. As ’n 21-jarige vrou het Mari die land met ’n Kombi-bussie in 1958 deurreis toe sy die hoofkarakter in Belinda is doofstom, Andre Huguenet se Afrkaanse vertaling van Elmer Harris se Johnny Belinda, gespeel het. Mari het vir baie jare ook dramaklasse by haar private studio aangebied, maar die hoogtepunt van haar regieloopbaan was toe sy ’n Afrikaanse vertaling van William Gibson se The Miracle Worker, Die wonderwerk, in Port Elizabeth se operahuis aangebied het. In 2008 het Mari Athol Fugard se Sorrows and Rejoicing vir die spelers op die planke gebring voordat sy in 2010 The Road to Mecca aangebied het. Albei die produksies het die beste regisseur- en beste toneelstuk-toekennings by Cata-toekennings gewen. “In dié stuk het ek drie spelers en hulle is soos klei in my hande. Maar wie is Denise as sy nie op die kassie is nie? “As ek die ateljee verlaat en my by my voordeur instap, is ek net Denise, die vrou van Clive, en Denise, die ma van Dominique, Simóne en Damian. Weg is die grimering en die eksieperfeksie-voorkoms van die celebrity, want dan behoort ek aan my huismense. “By die huis is dit altyd vir my belangrik om 100% daar vir my kinders te wees, ongeag hoe hard ek werk. hloe Rutgers consistently performs at the highest level in karate in South Africa, proving herself time and time again. The 12-year-old De Vrijzee pupil in Goodwood is the TygerBurger Sport Star of the Month winner. She first set foot in a dojo at the age of five. Ever since that day she fell in love with the sport and dedicated her time to training and improving at Karate Zen in Goodwood. Here follows her achievements for the year thus far: • Karate-Zen Open Challenge in February (double gold); • Karate-Zen nationals in March (gold and silver); • S.A Karate Open Challenge in March (double gold); • S.A Karate nationals in July (gold and silver); • Women’s League in August (gold and silver); • Cheetah Challenge in Chloe Rutgers August (double gold, silver and double bronze), and • The Cape Town Open in September (double gold). “I was excited to hear from my mom that

Bobby Joubert, Durbell se hoofafrigter, was ná afloop van die wedstryd teen die Noord-Vrystaters glad nie ’n gelukkige man nie. “Ons het wel goed gevaar in die skrums en lynstane, maar ’n groot aantal foute deur
die agterlyn was net nie aanvaarbaar nie. Veral ons hanteerwerk was baie swak,” verduidelik Joubert. Volgens hom het die Durbies nie naastenby die gehalte-spel gelewer waarmee hulle die vorige naweek op oortuigende wyse met Oos-Londen se Old Selbornians laat afgereken het nie. “Ons sal vorentoe drasties moet verbeter,” het Joubert gesê. CAPE TOWN MARATHON: ETHIOPIAN RUNNER BREAKS RECORD

ith pace setters ensuring the race was quick up front, Asefa Negewo (Ethiopia) made history by breaking the long-standing fastest time set on South African soil over 42.2km, held previously by David Tsebe (2:09:50). Negewo stormed to victory at the prestigious Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday, in a time of 2:08:42 to lift the men’s crown at the IAAF Silver Label race. The second man home in a field which included top local and international athletes was Emannuel Tirop, who crossed the line in 2:08:47, with Baranabas Kiptum earning third spot in 2:09:21. Meanwhile, Tish Jones won the women’s race in 2:36:13, holding off a challenge from another world-class elite line-up. Mergertu Geletu came second, in 2:36:34, finishing ahead of third-placed athlete and South African Lebogang Phalula, who finished in 2:38:00. “It is great to see such fast times being run on SA soil, which shows how much value a race of this stature brings to the sport at domestic level,” said race ambassador and former world halfmarathon record holder
