LOUD MUSIC: PUB ISSUED WITH WARNING

he Meraki pub in Wellington Road in Durbanville was issued with a notice of compliance last Friday after several complaints were received over the past two months about loud music in the early hours, especially over weekends. Not only is Durbanville often the last drinking hole for the night due to the extended hours at some pubs, but late-night drinking and drunk driving is often the cause of serious and even fatal road accidents. Theresa Uys, councillor for ward 112, says City of Cape Town infrastructure such as lamp poles and traffic lights regularly suffers damage over weekends. “This is an expense for the City. Perpetrators will be held accountable for the cost if we have their details,” she says.
During the past weekend alone, 14 arrests were made for drunk driving in the Durbanville town centre, according to Captain Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police. In the nine months between April and December last year, 196 drunk-driving arrests were made in Durbanville. Of these, 11 arrests were of people involved in accidents in which injuries had been sustained. In January and February this year, 11 arrests were made for drunk driving. These statistics were shared by the Durbanville police at the most recent meeting of the Durbanville Community Policing Forum on 9 March. Richard Bosman, the City’s executive director of safety and security, said at least six complaints were received about the loud noise at Meraki. An inspection was done at Meraki at about midnight last Friday in con-

junction with the dedicated liquor officer of Durbanville police, he said. “The noise was found to be very audible. The manager was issued with a compliance notice and the music levels were reduced. If they contravene again, a fine of up to R5000 can be issued. The electronic equipment can also be confiscated if they do not adhere,” Bosman said. “The matter will be forwarded to the Liquor Authority and Environmental Health Department for assistance, especially regarding the noise and other complaints. “Regular inspections will be conducted to ensure they are compliant, and necessary action will be taken,” Bosman warned. In an email to TygerBurger, a woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, complained that especially on Friday nights, extremely loud music can be heard emanating from the premises until about 03:00.

She has witnessed the loud music coming from Meraki, as well as intoxicated youngsters congregating on the street outside. “I feel tormented by the music coming from Meraki. For several weeks, I have been unable to get a proper night’s rest. I am by no means trying to shut down the pub, but their right to run their business should not negatively impact upon my right to peace and quiet,” she said. Amidst the complaints against the noise levels at Meraki, the pub’s annual application for the extension of its liquor trading hours until 04:00 was recently approved by the City. Subcouncil 7 approved the application on 14 February. This was due to the fact that no complaints had been received by the City’s liquor unit, although in the agenda it was stated the application is not supported by the Durbanville police. V To page 3.
