Rush to save every drop

T

housands of litres of precious drinking water wasted away last Tuesday morning when another water pipe burst in Wellway Park in Durbanville. This came amid strict level three water restrictions indicating residents may only water their gardens by bucket, and only in the mornings and evenings. The water pipe burst on the corner of Camelia and Tamerisk streets at about 08:00. Residents from about seven neighbouring houses hurried to the scene with their black garbage trolley bins to collect some of the water – a total of fourteen 240 litre bins of

water. Water was also collected with other containers. Residents said it is about the third or fourth pipe that burst in this area in the past month, but Priya Reddy, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town, said on enquiry by TygerBurger it was only the second pipe burst in the past two months. “There have been two in the last two months – one was recorded on 16 December and the other the most recent pipe burst on 10 January,” she said. According to Reddy the pipe bursts can be attributed to ageing infrastructure. “However, the City can confirm that this area is on our priority list for pipe replace-

ment,” she said. The water supply was restored at about 12:00. On criticism by residents on why the City, in the light of the current strict water restrictions, does not have measurements in place to save water in the case of pipe bursts, Reddy said the pipes need to be flushed after the repair to ensure that all possible sand and air are cleared from the system and the quality of the water is up to standard. “This is normally done from a fire hydrant situated at the highest point in the system. The City will investigate a more beneficial use of the water being flushed,” she said. In the meantime the City warned in a media release that “unless a drastic improve-

ment (with water saving) is observed, more serious restrictions, including a blanket ban on watering gardens or filling pools, will need to be applied”. The City of Cape Town’s Water Inspectorate also carried out a blitz operation in the Tygerberg and Goodwood area last Thursday. The blitz resulted in the issuing of one fine to the value of R2 000 for the hosing down of concrete surfaces with potable water. In addition to the fine issued, officers engaged a number of residents on the importance of saving water, paying specific attention to houses with lush vegetation, and followed up on the reports of contraventions.
