ie Baxter-teatersentrum sal vanaf Maandag 24 Oktober ’n Afrikaanse seisoen aanbied. Hierdie speelvlak bestaan uit twee produksies, Die ontelbare 48 van Maandag 24 tot Saterdag 29 Oktober, en As die broek pas van onderdag 3 tot Saterdag 12 November. Die ontelbare 48 is ’n satiriese eenmanstuk uit die pen van die Fiësta-wenner Wessel Pretorius, waarin hy ook self speel en die re-
gie doen. Dis Woensdagaand op ’n klein plattelandse dorpie in die Laeveld. Die skoolsaal word ingerig vir die maandelikse fliekaand. Agt-en-veertig dorpenaars vergader bymekaar – elkeen met sy eie storie – om na The Sound of Music te kyk. Tussen hulle sit ’n moordenaar met ’n sluwe plan. Dramatic expressions at Artscape
Gary Naidoo will be on stage in Syria?.
Artscape’s acclaimed New Voices programme continues with a gripping double bill: in (s)kin and Syria? at the Artscape Arena from tonight (Wednesday). A choreopoem is a form of dramatic expression that combines poetry, dance, music, and song. Writer Mbongeni Mtshali chose this multidimensional medium to create and present in (s)kin. The piece was inspired by Mtshali’s memories as one of only three black children being taught English at a private, all-boys boarding school in late 1980’s Natal and draws from many sources including intimate personal stories, poetry, visual and auditory archival material, to explore how the process of “coming into language” shapes and positions people within
specific cultural and political world views. in (s)kin will explore the contemporary experience of post-apartheid life which emerges in seemingly transparent everyday encounters that are burdened by imagined boundaries. The piece is performed by Julia Wilson, KaiLuke Brümmer, Ntombi Makhutshi, Jared Musiker, Thembekile Komane and Ryan Mayne. The other half of the bill features Syria?, the satirical drama of a bigoted parent who tries to have a Muslim boy expelled from school for befriending her daughter.
