Kite surfers aiming high The Table View beachfront will become the site for a Guinness world record attempt for the largest parade of kite surfers across a onemile course (1,6km) stretching from Dolphin Beach to Doodles between Friday 29 and Sunday 31 January. The Virgin Kitesurfing Armada, a fundraising event for local and international charities, will be bringing together the kitesurfing community and industry from around the world. Launched in the UK in 2013, the first Virgin Kitesurfing Armada was lead off by Sir Richard Branson, setting a new Guinness world record for the largest parade of kite surfers” and raising £70 000 (R1,6m) for charity. In 2014 the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada Spain

broke the record with 352 participants. Spain still holds the current world record. The wind window for the attempt is between 29 and 31 January 2016, when professional and amateur kite surfers will attempt to bring the Guinness world record to South Africa. All the money raised at this event will be supporting the local community development programme, the Save Foundation. Internationally it will be supporting Virgin Unite’s work with entrepreneurs and communities in developing countries. V Entries for this event are now open and all kitesurfers can enter by either scanning the QR code on the event posters using WeChat, or online at: www. armadaevents.co.uk.

A

musical journey that started in Mitchell’s Plain has reached a major milestone with the launch of Carmen Xclusive’s debut solo CD. Now living in Parow, many music lovers will simply know her as Carmen Herbert, or if you’re a bit more old-school “Carmen from N2”. She laughs when acknowledging her association with the popular band. “Yes, that was a very important time in my life, my education and training in the music business, but it started before I joined them,” she says. Like so many musicians on the Cape Flats, the roots of her talent are in the church, but she used to sneak away to the Inn on the Plain to listen to Rudolph Paulse and the band Horizon. “I loved the music. It just meant something special to me. I was persuaded to enter a singing competition there and the rest is – as they say – history. “Offers came in for me to perform at cabaret shows and I was only 14 at the time but I fell in love with the business and just enjoyed singing.” As word spread about the young talent she joined up with Mike Kwagga’s NuffZed when she was 16 and a year later joined the Wentzel brothers in N2. “Performing with them for almost ten years was an exciting time for me. This was almost like me going to college and learning to hone my talent. “Eventually I felt that I wanted to take a step up in my career by going beyond the club scene, get into the corporate scenario and work in a wider variety of styles. “That’s also when I decided to become Carmen Xclusive as a brand that wanted

to show the world my own identity and that there’s only one me,” she laughs. Since then she has impressed music lovers with the best in the business in South Africa and discovered the jazzier side of her talent with Ian Smith’s VJR and various collaborations with the likes of Richard Caesar, Allou April and Robbie Jansen. With the release of her album Xclusive Nites @ Pigalles she has surrounded her with some of the best around town. Camillo Lombard produced the album with his band Top Dog backing her as well as a brass section comprising Ian Smith and Willy Haubrich. Carmen confesses that she has been going around to some of the popular radio stations but can’t get any of them to feature the album on their playlists. This remains a mystery because every tune on this album is a carefully crafted gem. “It’s an album of my favourite covers done my way,” she says. “On Volume 2 I am going to give the world some of my originals.” She opens with the David Foster composition Love that will Last and the quality of the voice that made so many love her is immediately evident, with the magic just keeping on coming your way. She takes some pop classics like Get Lucky and Valerie from Amy Winehouse and twists them into tunes that could feature on an album of new jazzy standards. Even Charlie Chaplin’s Smile features with a funkier kind of feel. With a debut like this let’s hope that Carmen gets back into the studio very quickly to give the world some more of her musical magic. V For more information on where to get the album, email ladycarmen.ch@gmail.com or call Bernie on 079 871 9855.

UWC entrepreneurs graduate UWC’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) proudly graduated their first crop of entrepreneurship fellows. The class of 2015 comprised a group of graduates who participated in the pilot Supplier development training programme presented by the CEI and sponsored by the provincial government. The programme allows for peer to peer learning and facilitation support among small business owners wishing to grow skills and opportunities. Participants attend workshops, receiving peer consulting and exchanging field service opportunities. They also have the chance to connect and collaborate with other distinguished change makers in their industry’s development field.

UWC finance director, Manie Regal, said: “The fellowship started as an incubation programme, but has transformed itself into a business support project where entrepreneurs can receive tried and tested advice from their peers.” Regal noted that one lesson all entrepreneurs can learn from the ‘Fees must fall’ campaign at UWC is that it is important to adapt to change within their business. “If we want to survive in business, we must all learn to adapt to constant change – like UWC did during those tough times. The UWC Entrepreneurship Fellowship was launched in 2014 and Absa will sponsor the course from 2016 to 2019. V For more information contact Wendy Mehl on 021 959 9549 or via email at wmehl@uwc.ac.za.
