ew signs warning residents about pollution at Milnerton Lagoon sparked concern last week, but the City says these just replaced old signs.

TygerBurger was called out to Lagoon Beach by resident Mike Beart who said a few weeks ago the water draining into the Lagoon had a foul smell and he later spotted the new signs.

“I have never seen those signs before and after I picked up the smell I wondered if this had polluted the water and enquired whether or not residents should be concerned. I would just like to find out what is happening because this stormwater outlet smells really

bad,” he said.

Two weeks prior to Beart’s email to the newspaper, TygerBurger was contacted by Rugby resident Matt Weisse who raised concerns about a sewage spill in Donegal Street.

In a letter to the City sent during August, Weisse advised that raw sewage was spilling into the storm water canal leading to Lagoon Beach and at the time it had apparently been flowing for four days.

“There has been a large sewage discharge for four days running non-stop into the storm water system and the canal that leads out onto the Beach at Lagoon Mouth Milnerton due to a broken pump station. There are condoms (and) toilet paper floating in the water and stuck to the road. The lagoon and beach as well as the rivers and canals are

blocked from all the solid waste, bulrushes and the water cannot flow. We are awaiting a disaster to happen with the next heavy rainfall,” he wrote.

TygerBurger questioned whether the two incidents were linked and according to Mayco member for health, Siyabulela Mamkeli, sewage from an overflow can enter the stormwater system, which would carry the pollution to the outlets downstream.

However, in this case, the new signage was not linked to a recent pollution event, but rather to replace older and damaged signage warning the public of the risks associated with the water.

Mamkeli explains pollution of the lagoon is a persistent issue, and comes from a variety of sources including being conveyed into

the lagoon by means of the stormwater system, especially after it has rained, when the rain washes surface pollution that has accumulated since the last rainfall.

He says direct contact with this water carries increased risk of infection, especially gastroenteritis, upper respiratory issues and skin infections.

Asked whether the City tests E.coli levels at the beach and lagoon, Mamkeli says the City tests E.coli levels at various sampling stations once a month.

“The results can be used to interpret longterm trends, but the monitoring frequency is not such that spikes in the levels of E.coli after individual spillages are picked up between sampling periods.”

The water quality is measured for its suitability for intermediate contact using the 1996 South African National Water Quality Guidelines for recreational use.

“The limit for faecal coliforms (including E.coli) is set at 1000 counts per 100 ml. Above this limit the likelihood of the occurrence of infection increases.”

He says E.coli results over a one-year period – from September 2016 to August 2016 – were evaluated using a statistical method to work out a median value which is used for compliance. The median value of 4850

counts per 100 ml for E.coli was calculated and exceeds the recommended limit for intermediate contact.

“For seawater the site that is monitored is situated 50m downstream from the Milnerton Lagoon mouth as it drains into sea.

Using a different compliance guideline (South African Water Quality Guidelines for Coastal Marine Waters, volume 2: Guideline for Recreational Use, DEA 2012) used for seawater bathing a criteria for E.coli and Intestinal enterococci allows less than or equal to 500 and less than or equal to 185 counts per 100 ml, respectively. Above these limits the public health risk increases.”

For this site both E.coli and Intestinal enterococci were above the recommended lim-

its at 13 320 and 1600 counts per 100 ml, respectively. Both counts exceed the limit.

“Both these areas are not designated for swimming hence the presence of signage to warn the public of possible public health risk. At these counts intermediate contact is not recommended.”

Sonnenberg also says in terms of addressing the water quality, the City would to call on residents to refrain from littering and allowing potential blockages such as rags and cooking fats to enter the sewerage system.

“Doing so is illegal, and can contribute to environmental health concerns as described above,” he concludes.

ollowing several storm surge incidents at Big Bay Beach, the City of Cape Town will undertake the reshaping of the dune system this week.

According to a statement released this week, the beach will be closed until Saturday 17 September while work is carried out.

The project is being carried out by the City’s transport, solid waste, environmental and sports, recreation and amenities departments along with the Big Bay Master Property Owners’ Association.

The statement says the level of Big Bay beach has dropped significantly due to a number of storm surge incidents in recent months.

According to the City’s Mayco member for community services, Anda Ntsodo, this has caused the dune system to become increasingly eroded and an extensive portion of the frontal dune cordon was lost.

“The remaining dune was left with a steep cliff-face abutting the beach with bollards and rubble strewn along the beach and embedded in the cliff. The frontal dune now poses a safety hazard to visitors and the dune reshaping intervention will therefore address this hazard. The project would not have been possible were it not for the necessary environmental authorisation being in place and the heartening collaboration of all parties involved.”

He says the reshaping project will be undertaken within a narrow four-metre belt of the frontal dune on the seaward side. It will affect an approximately 250m section of dune between the northern-most and southern-most wooden staircase on the beachfront and seaward of the Eden on the Bay development.

This section of the beach will be closed for the duration of the work.

“Heavy machinery such as an excavator and front-end loader will be used for this work. In addition, large trucks will transport the rubble from the site. Once the reshaping operations are completed, the frontal dune will be revegetated and the fencing will be reinstated to conserve the rehabilita-

Ntsodo says in the interest of public safety, residents and visitors to the area are advised to keep away from the cordoned off area.

“We anticipate that the work will be completed within the allocated period of five days. Should there be a delay for any unforeseen circumstances, members of the public will be advised accordingly.”

Table View Ratepayers’ Association (TVRA) chairperson Mandy Da Matta says the work is welcomed by residents.

With Big Bay being among some of the most popular tourist spots during the summer, Da Matta says the City is being proactive in ensuring this area is ready for summer.

While the condition of dunes along the Table View beachfront remain a sore point for many residents, Da Matta says now is the time for all to have their input.

Milnerton Central residents are invited to attend a community meeting on Monday 19 September where key roleplayers will be addressing the community.

Milnerton Central is the area between Koeberg Road to the east, Boundary Road to the south, Milnerton Lagoon/ Beachfront to the west and Racecourse Road to the north.

The meeting, which is scheduled to start at 18:30, is expected to last about two hours and residents will be introduced to the new ward 55 and ward 4 councillors.

Among some of those who will be speaking at the meeting is the Milnerton Central Ratepayers’ Association, which is now a new committee and is trying to re-establish themselves and grow membership in the community with the aim of working with the City of Cape Town and councillors.

The Milnerton Crime Watch Trust

(MCWT), a non-profit community safety and security trust that patrols the Milnerton Central area, will also be there.

Also in attendance will be representatives of the Milnerton Community Policing Forum (CPF), the Sector 3 CPF subforum and Milnerton police.

Each representative of the organisation will be allocated a time of approximately 15 minutes which will include a question and answer session.

The aim of these quarterly meetings is to ensure greater community involvement and feedback on issues and work in progress within this area.

All residents and ratepayers living within the boundaries of Milnerton Central are invited to attend the meeting, which will held at Milnerton Library (starting at 18:30).

Da Matta says the condition on the entire beachfront is a top priority for the association amid concern about sewage spills and general maintenance.

She notes the public participation process regarding the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and calls on all residents to have their say.

“With the IDP process, residents get to have their say on what should be prioritised and where funds will be allocated. The beachfront is in dire need of attention with the erosion of dunes and collapsing parking lots. The TVRA looks forward to engaging with the City on these issues to bring about meaningful change. In the meantime, we ask that residents in the vicinity of Big Bay take note of the City’s request so the officials may proceed to improve the beach for all,” she concludes.

NHW helps to nab intruder at Dolphin Beach home A 28-year-old man from Joe Slovo is behind bars after he was caught illegally entering a home in Dolphin Beach.

According to a report from Table View police, shortly before 10:00 on Friday 9 September Constable Nathaniel van Rooi and a colleague responded to a call from the Table View Neighbourhood Watch.

Police spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, says officers were informed of a suspect who had opened the door to a house in Lincoln Crescent, Dolphin Beach, and walked into the house.

“He was confronted by the home owner, who surprised the intruder. The suspect ran out of the house and the home owner contacted her security firm saying the suspect was hiding underneath a vehicle.”

When police arrived, they discovered the suspect and also found a device used to jam the locking system of vehicles, on him.

The station commander, Colonel Dirk Vosloo, commended the roleplayers in the joint apprehension of the suspect.

ngoing robberies in a walkway linking Tygerhof to Century City have sparked a proposal to have the lane closed at night.

The proposal has been tabled by the Tygerhof Neighbourhood Watch following ongoing problems with robberies and breakins in the suburb. Watch chairperson Mike Lippert took TygerBurger on a site visit of the lane situated at the bottom end of Pringle Road. Here, he explains, the lane was never a formalised walkway and the grass patch was used by many to access Century City. However, the lane also became a hotspot for muggings.

He says the City of Cape Town opted to pave the area and add lighting to make the area look and feel safer for pedestrians. The muggings, however, have continued.

“This happened in 2011, but what we are finding is that the muggings are still happening and the lane is an entrance and escape route for criminals. Just Friday night we had a mugging here where a 16-year-old was walking from Canal Walk. A guy robbed him and ran towards Ratanga Road, where he quickly boarded a taxi and was gone,” Lippert says.

He adds many residents want the lane to remain, as they work at Canal Walk and use the lane quite often, and instead have proposed that the lane not be closed off completely but be turned into a controlled thoroughfare.

“We are proposing that it be gated where we have the gates open in the day, but that it is locked at night to prevent criminals from using this as a thoroughfare or escape route. We are also proposing that the neighbourhood watch or the security officers of the Tygerhof Crime Watch Trust, who already patrol the area, take responsibility

He says the security officers regularly patrol near the lane and in some cases when alerts are sent out about a burglary or theft where suspects are on the run, many criminals head straight towards the lane, where they make their escape.

The watch recently met with ward 55 councillor Fabian Ah-Sing to discuss possible solutions. The councillor proposed a petition be drawn up to gauge the community’s thoughts on the matter. Speaking to TygerBurger, Ah-Sing says while it may be possible to have a gate erected, there are many considerations for the City. In addition, a property which runs alongside the lane is privately owned and permissions may be needed before a gate is erected.

The petition has been placed on the Tygerhof Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page and to date has just over 160 signatures.

“The purpose of this gate would be to reduce criminal activity such as muggings, drug dealing and illegal vehicle activity. In addition, this gate would reduce the amount of thoroughfare during the course of the night,” it reads.

Ah-Sing says any intervention at the lane will have to be in line with what local bylaws allow. “The petition has received much support, but in order to motivate this proposal of a controlled thoroughfare, we need to be clear on what the majority of residents want,” he concludes.

arconi Beam Primary School buzzed with excitement on Saturday as volunteers completed work on the school’s new library.

a boost thanks to a donation of 200 books by the team of Clean C. The non-profit organisation, well known for monthly beach clean-ups and beach runs, also runs various upliftment projects in Joe Slovo.

In a previous interview, Clean C founder, Gregory Player, said the development of children was high on the organisation’s agenda. With their community project Beautiful Future the organisation provides afterschool assistance to smaller children at Marconi Beam. Children get help with their homework, participate in games and go for reading classes.

Plans for a library were first conceptualised two years ago when a child was killed while crossing Koeberg Road.

On Saturday, volunteers from the Flight Centre Foundation, The Lodge at Atlantic Beach in Melkbos and Time Personnel in Century City came out for a clean-up of the designated classroom. The books were placed on their new shelves and children who participate in the Beautiful Future project showed their appreciation.

Lions seek donations for Operation Smile The Milnerton Lions Club is rallying to help Operation Smile by collecting items such as baby clothes, toys, nappies and other items.

The Lions need your help to assist this nonprofit volunteer medical services organisation that has screened 463 patients, treated 320 patients and provided 389 procedures in South Africa since 2006.

These numbers include all mission and world care patients from inception to June 2016, and relate to free reconstructive surgeries to children and adults with cleft lips or cleft palates, or any other correctable facial deformities.

Teams consisting of highly qualified doc-

tors, nurses, anaesthetists and other medical volunteers, as well as non-medical volunteers who all give freely of their time, will travel to Mbombela, and during September and October will screen and potentially operate on the additional 70 patients who have already registered for their life changing surgery.

Learners plant tree seedlings Intaka Island, the award-winning nature conservation wetlands and eco-centre at Century City, celebrated Arbor Week with a special programme for learners from Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo.

Intaka eco-centre manager, Adél van Wyk, said for the second consecutive year groups of Grade 10 Life Science students had spent a fun day on the island learning about trees, the vital role they play in the lives of people and how they contribute to a green, dignified and healthy environment.

“We also stressed the necessity for everyone to plant trees and to care for them.”

She said learners planted tree seedlings on Intaka Island, which will be

looked after by the Intaka Island field rangers at the Intaka Island Nursery until they are ready to be transplanted at the school.

“Next year learners will do likewise and from the fourth year learners will not only plant seedlings but they will also replant the first year learners’ grown trees at their school. We will roll this over year after year from then on.”

She said any trees surplus to Sinenjongo’s requirements would be donated to other schools in the area.

Van Wyk said other topics covered included how Arbor Day began, all the neat things we get from trees, how to identify trees, the importance of composting and water, as well as the importance of planting this time of year.

Learners of Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo planted tree seedlings on Intaka Island, which will be looked after in the nursery until they are ready to be transplanted at the school.

The metamorphosis of a girl’s dream MONIQUE DUVAL

very girl at school for every period.

This is the dream of a young girl whose project has seen a flurry of support from Table View residents.

Daniella Zinanni, a pupil from Elkanah House, is making waves in her community as young and old have come out to support her project, which sees her gather sanitary towels for girls at underprivileged schools.

The idea to help keep girls in school was first sparked by a trip to an Atlantis school in 2014. Daniella, along with some of her classmates, had gathered donations which included stationery and food to hand over to the school, and while talking to a teacher she and her friends were told that many of the girls at the high school missed out on classes while they were menstruating as their parents often could not afDaniella Zinanni ford sanitary towels.

At the time, Daniella was only nine years old and admits that she had not yet been taught about puberty and did not quite understand why the girls could not go to school. So off she went to ask her mother Sheila some difficult questions.

Using the metaphor of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly, her mom explained the changes to a young girl’s body and the need for sanitary towels and other products during menstruation.

Last year Daniella sent a proposal to her school principal, Arthur Preston, for the Bhabhathane Butterfly Project as part of a

school leadership programme.

“It was supposed to be a school project but it got so big so quickly. We started with a raffle and raised R3000.”

These funds were used to create packs for girls consisting of sanitary towels and other hygiene items. During 2016, Chaeli Mycroft, the winner of the 2011 International Children’s Peace Prize, visited Elkanah and met with Daniella to discuss her project. She later nominated Daniella for the 2016 prize and the local girl has made it onto a list of 120 children nominated worldwide. Daniella is the youngest person to be nominated for this year and is also the only South African child to make the list. If she is named a finalist, she will be jetting off to the Netherlands later this year.

She was also invited by DA leader Mmusi Maimane to address parliament on the needs of young girls and how to keep them in school during menstruation.

Her foundation has subsequently partnered with Sophakama Primary School in Dunoon, where Daniella and her classmates visit the school to hand over the packs. She says visiting a school in an informal settlement was a real eyeopener for her and her classmates.

“We want so many things. We want iPods, cellphones, clothes and all that stuff, but just down the road there are girls who just want to go to school. I have made so many friends at Sophakama and I think it has helped my friends at school and me realise that we should be grateful, but we

must also do what we can for others. We take getting an education for granted.”

Most recently she teamed up with Colette Mostert from Donate My Gift to host a 5km fun run along the beachfront. Here more than 300 people came with sanitary towels as the entry fee. Sheila says in a bid to incorporate boys and men into the run they were asked to make a cash donation which was collected and donated towards Rheed Castle-Pearce, a Grade 7 learner at Elkanah House, who was diagnosed with cancer. The funds go towards hiring a tutor for the 13-year-old boy.

In September, Daniella’s foundation will be embarking on a collection drive where residents can make donations to help keep the project going. The foundation will also be reg-

istered as a public benefit organisation and Daniella says she is keen to keep the project going.

Speaking to TygerBurger, Daniella says she is determined to make a change by addressing the challenges faced by girls.

Local’s YouTube video goes viral LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl

H

e set out to grab one singer’s attention, and in the process captured hearts across the globe.

The term “YouTube sensation” is one that’s thrown around quite easily, but with his latest video hitting a million views (Facebook and YouTube combined) in less than a week, it’s safe to say that Bellville choreographer Rudi Smit fits the description.

Filmed at Milnerton and Norman Henshilwood High Schools, Rudi’s dance video, set to Meghan Trainor’s “Me Too”, was uploaded on Monday 5 September, with a message reaching out to Meghan herself. The three-minute, twenty-second clip was an instant hit, going viral almost instantly. By the following evening it had made its way to Meghan, who responded on

Twitter with a message saying “Wow”, “Unbelievable” and “Slay my life”. By Wednesday morning it was the number one trending video on YouTube and by Thursday morning it was featured on Ellen DeGeneres’ ellentube.

“It was a way for me to get my work out there on an international scale,” he says.

His strategy worked and he’s been travelling regularly between Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa and elsewhere since 2014 already. On Monday (12 September) he left for Italy where he’ll be teaching workshops at various dance studios.

When in Cape Town, Rudi works with his Untimitive dance crew, most of whom are featured in the “Me Too” video.

Rudi has been teaching dance since the age of 12 already and many of the dancers who work with him today are

performers he’s met through audition processes over his years on stage.

While he is the creative director for all his projects, devising everything from the concept and choreography to the camera angles, he has worked closely with childhood friends like director Dylan Pereira and editor Willem Botha, who were both once dancers themselves.

He heard “Me Too” in May and says the concept of the school theme, complete with “mean girls” immediately came to him. “It just kind of pops into my brain as I listen to music and I start to see the whole vision play off.”

Thanks to his YouTube videos, dance fans can see his choreography on the big screen in the new Honey 3 film, shot in South Africa and featuring a host of local dancers.

Community sends criminals packing MONIQUE DUVAL

s the Table View police precinct continues to expand, police say a connected community working together is the winning formula.

Reflecting on the latest crime statistics for the period between April 2015 to March 2016, police say the progress made and successful arrests are a result of various crime-fighting organisations and security companies working with police to send criminals packing.

Speaking to TygerBurger last week, police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler says among some of the top priorities is to address contact crimes. She says earlier in the year police warned about an increase in assaults of which 50% originated from Site 5, adding current statistics show many of the cases reported are linked to alcohol abuse.

Crime intelligence officers are looking for ways to address illegal liquor outlets as the source. In the contact crimes category, robberies also take prevalence and during 2016, police have continually raised the alarm about children being robbed at MyCiTi bus stops.

“This was because the children were often playing on their cellphones while waiting for the bus and with continuous public alerts, many organisations, including the Community Policing Forum, have shared these with the public and we have seen a reduction in people using

cellphones at bus stops and robberies.”

Among some of the other crime concerns over the past year were an increase in the amount of theft out of motor vehicle cases.

She explains the precinct is hard hit by property-related crimes and in many of the house burglary cases police discovered criminals targeted homes where windows were left open or had no alarm systems.

While reports of house robberies – where perpetrators enter homes while occupants are present and take valuables by force and often at gunpoint – continue to raise alarm, police say these cases are sporadic. “There is no clear trend and these occur across the three sectors.

We want people to be more careful as we suspect in these cases the residents are being watched by criminals and targeted when they are identified as soft targets.

Soft targets are often those who live on their own. We call on residents to be vigilant and to report suspicious activity.”

Commenting on the number of drugrelated arrests, Chandler says this is often dependent on tip-offs from residents.

“We have made quite a few successful drug arrests thanks to neighbours who noticed something and contacted police.

As our precinct continues to expand, we rely on partnerships with the community and the support we receive is really great. Without our active community who supports police and provides information, we wouldn’t make progress.”

Cluster cops clamp down hard It’s been a busy week for officers in the Milnerton police cluster which stretches from Milnerton to Moorreesburg. . According to a report from cluster spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, on Thursday 8 September, Melkbosstrand police along with Sea Border and Melkbosstrand neighbourhood watches, held a joint operation to curb poaching in the area.

The team held observation along the coast and observed two men entering the waters and eventually their perseverance paid off when they noticed the two male suspects at 04:30 exiting the water, carrying heavily laden bags.

“The team cautiously approached the suspects and discovered 307 abalone and one lobster inside the bags. Another 866 abalone were found hidden on the beach.

“The abalone and lobster were handed to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the suspects detained at Melkbosstrand Police Station. The suspects are originally from Hermanus, but now reside in Witsand, Atlantis.

“The value of the abalone and lobster is

an estimated at R60 000.” . During weekend operations in Table View, police arrested six suspects in separate incidents, and confiscated four “stops” of dagga and 34 parcels of dagga. . In Milnerton, police held an operation to clamp down on illegal liquor outlets in Dunoon.

According to the report, on Saturday 10 September officers arrested three people on three different cases for selling liquor without a licence, and confiscated a total of 350 litres of alcohol.

On the same day, Milnerton police arrested one male suspect in possession of counterfeit money to the value of R1000. The suspect is from Hout Bay. Cluster commander, Major-General Aneeqah Jordaan, commended the officers on their good work and encouraged them to keep it up. “Our partnership with other law enforcement agencies, neighbourhood watches, community policing forums and security firms in the Milnerton cluster has proven to be a firm one, and one that is appreciated,” she says.

A

s the Cape Town Metro continues to grow rapidly and the needs in each community differ, authorities need to make tough decisions on how to ensure the city functions optimally in the future.

Now they are calling on Capetonians to come out and have their say about the needs and priorities in their community through a participation process on the City of Cape Town’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

A public meeting on the IDP was held in Milnerton recently which saw representatives from various ratepayers’ and community based organisations come out to hear how they can have their say.

Opening the meeting, the subcouncil cluster co-ordinator, Trevor Hollis-Turner, explained the IDP is the municipality’s fiveyear plan which addresses the strategic and budget priorities for the period between 2017 and 2022.

In his presentation, deputy mayor and Mayco member for finance, Ian Neilson, explained while each community had its own issues, it was important for residents to look at the story of Cape Town. He said the outcome of the IDP process would inform council on how their budget will be spent over the next five years.

“We have got to a place where we can see what has worked, what hasn’t and what our

issues are. As a council we have very clear ideas on what we want to do, but this process is an opportunity for people of Cape Town to engage us around these issues and ideas so we can plan for the next five years.”

Neilson said Cape Town was home to 3.95 million people and the population had increased by 29% since 2001. With just over one million households, he said the city was growing at a rapid rate. Along with this, the number of indigent households where people cannot afford to pay rates, has increased

to 288 703 in 2013 (up from 250 000 in 2003).

“It’s also important to note that many people in this city are poor and do not have resources or the ability to contribute towards rates. We have a large number of unemployed people in Cape Town, and what is of great concern is that almost half of the youth in this city are unemployed. This rapid growth has many implications and we have seen that most of the country is still urbanising and we can expect a continuation in this growth.”

He explained the average household size had declined from 3.7 people to 3.5 people. In practice, Neilson said this means that the number of households is growing faster than the population. “So this is a concern, because how are we going to ensure that we are able to cope with a faster growing need for houses in the city?”

Neilson said the city was affected by many challenges including water supply, housing, business investment, the provision of basic services and developments. As the city continues to expand, authorities need to question whether or not continued growth along the fringes of the metro are sustainable or not. Coupled with this, the city had inherited various challenges that are a result of the apartheid land use model, which sees many travel long distances to places of employment. “We will have to increase the provision of basic services such as sanitation, electricity and roads to ensure that in the fu-

ture the city continues to function. So this is where we start with the questions around the future. We have to start making decisions on where this is all going to happen.

Where are we going to put another half a million households? Where are we going to put all this commercial space we need? Do we simply allow the city to keep growing on the edges or do we look at densification as a more sustainable solution?”

In terms of the IDP, Neilson said the City was calling on residents to assist them in prioritising the main issues. He explained the priorities are aligned with the City’s five pillars, namely an “opportunity City, safe City, caring City, inclusive City and well-run City”. Once approved, the IDP is valid for five years and reviewed annually by the City. “The debate we want to have with the citizens of Cape Town is what the priorities for the next five years are, to begin to overcome the challenges we face.”

V In terms of the public participation process the City will host a focus group meeting for subcouncil 1 on Tuesday 4 October at the Leibrandt van Niekerk hall in Table View from 19:00 to 21:00 where representatives from various community organisations will discuss the challenges identified by residents. Just over a month ago, Melkbosstrand police raised the alarm about illegal activities in Olive Close, but one visit to this area over a weekend and not one youngster is found on the streets.

So where are they? They have all gathered on nearby soccer fields to participate in the Sports Against Crime project. The project, which was initiated by various organisations in Melkbosstrand including the Community Policing Forum and police, has already seen results.

In August, Milnerton police cluster commander Major-General Aneeqah Jordaan called a public meeting in Olive Close as officers were concerned about an escalation in drug use and teens becoming gang members.

Police spokesperson Constable Debbie Alard says in just one month, the project has seen the development of three male soccer teams and several netball teams for girls.

TygerBurger visited Melkbosstrand High School on Saturday where friendly matches between the various teams were underway.

Here youngsters say they have found a way to keep busy and meet new friends.

Alard says the change has been overwhelming and police found many youngsters were bored over weekends.

“It has been amazing to see how everything turned out. We have three soccer teams of three age groups and the Sackson brothers, Piet and Hendrik, have really come out to help us. There is no place for children to play and Melkbosstrand High School has opened their fields to us over weekends. Here the children gather and play friendly matches with children from the farms surrounding Melkbos,” she says.

According to Chris Cloete, captain of the senior team, a space to play is exactly what they needed. “The soccer matches have really given us something to look forward to. Before, many of us would be out on the streets because we had nothing to do and now we spend all our time practising and doing something positive. The problem is in Olive Close there isn’t space to play, so we are very happy that we can use these fields now. ” At the school’s netball courts a friendly game between teams from Melkbos and Wolwerivier was underway. Henrietta Salvester from Wolwerivier says the games have given the girls something to look forward to.

They also receive free training by netball coach Ellie Clews, who saw the initiative on Facebook and quickly gathered donations.

The netball teams also receive support from Susanna De Kock at Melbosstrand High.

The lack of support from the City of Cape Town’s social development department was highlighted at the annual meeting of the ward 55 Local Network of Care (LNOC).

The LNOC was first established in June 2015 by City officials and at the time residents were informed the network should consist of community organisations and individuals who assist vulnerable people in their communities.

Over the past year, the committee has continuously raised concerns about the lack of support from social development and the annual meeting was no different when co-ordinator Maureen Jangle raised her frustrations.

The meeting got off to a rough start when Jangle informed those present that she was disappointed with the turnout as well as the absence of City officials. An official arrived 30 minutes after the meeting had been scheduled to start.

The meeting was held to elect a new committee who would take the LNOC forward and ahead of the elections. Jangle read the resignation of former vice co-ordinator, Justin Kumlehn. The written submission stated that Kumlehn had opted to resign from the LNOC to focus on safety and security projects. It also stated that while on paper the LNOC concept was a great idea, the practical implementation was lacking.

“On paper and in theory the LNOC is a great concept. In practice is where the problem is, as there is absolutely no support, training and feedback from the department. This is rather sad. Until that is rectified I personally feel the LNOCs across the province will struggle to achieve any meaningful change within their wards,” he wrote.

An election was held and while all committee members stayed in their current positions, Kumlehn was replaced by Railien Neilson as vice coordinator.

raised concerns about the LNOC, which she stated would never work without the support of the social department.

Jangle said the committee availed itself each Thursday to the community to help resolve issues, but to date had achieved no results as they were continually moved between officials when looking for answers. She said homelessness was a problem in the ward and while soup kitchens operated daily, other help was needed. During 2015, the LNOC commenced a project to assist homeless people in obtaining identity cards so they can apply for work. The project was stalled because the LNOC was informed they needed R140 for each person and in addition needed to arrange transport to get the individuals to Cape Town’s CBD. The project was never rolled out because the LNOC has no funds and Jangle enquired whether the social development department could assist.

According to the official who attended the meeting, the social development department had no budget allocations for LNOCs across Cape Town. Instead, she asked for a wish list of programmes and said she would try to source funding, but made no promises.

However, the committee said this was not enough. Jangle said despite meetings with the district social development office and at the civic centre, no results were forthcoming. She explained the committee consisted of volunteers who have not been equipped or trained to run the LNOC and were left on their own.

In January, the committee wrote a letter to the City’s Mayco member for social development, Suzette Little, indicating a lack of support from the department was the reason they wanted to disband.

Ward councillor Fabian Ah-Sing asked that the wish list be drawn up and requested the department looked into sourcing funding for the ID project.

“If we can start with one project and work on making that successful, I think it will motivate us to work on the next one.”

Those present agreed.

ewind to a time before Game of Thrones and Forged by Fire on the Discovery channel, and for the majority of us, knives were something you ate with and referred to when speaking about the Knights of the Round Table.

But now it has all changed, and knives have become the “in” thing – not in a bad way, but in a really cool way, like how you would appreciate good art and good wine.

So how do you learn more about these pieces, and even better yet, how do you learn how to make your own?

Started in 2008 with only nine members, the Cape Knifemakers Guild was formed to cultivate one of the oldest crafts in the world – knifemaking. Now, eight years later and with just under 30 members, the guild seeks to imbue the timeless ideals of knifemaking into our technological age.

“The ideals for the guild are those of perfection through work, skill through learning, and fellowship through generosity, where we are able to create a knife of the highest order of craftsmanship from a piece of blank steel,” explains Rick Afonso, chairman of the Cape Knifemakers Guild.

Every year the guild holds their Annual Knifemaking Show at the Jansen Hall in Milnerton. This year it will be held on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 October.

At this event, guild members are able to showcase their designs and sell works to the public. More importantly it is an opportunity for the guild to speak with the public about the art of knifemaking and hopefully encourage new members to join their fold.

Wag ek nou die dag in my motor by ’n winkelsentrum terwyl ’n boemelaar skuins voor my op die sypaadjie sit.

Sy vel is verinneweer en geskroei deur die son en wind, sy bos hare bros en gebleik deur die natuurelemente. Hy staar swaarmoedig voor hom uit. Sy diepgesonke oë en gekromde postuur vertel ’n storie van beproewing, swaarkry, verwaarlosing en liefdeloosheid.

Hy tel ’n sigaretstompie van die sypaadjie op, grawe in sy verweerde jas se sak en bring ’n boksie vuurhoutjies te voorskyn. Sy knopperige vingers bewe toe hy die stompie aansteek. Pluime wit rook verdwerg sy gesig, wat dit vir ’n vlietende moment laat lyk of ’n koplose persoon daar sit.

Wat sou in sy lewe verkeerd geloop het dat hy hom by die onsigbares aangesluit het? wonder ek.

Want boemelaars is onsigbaar – of so lyk dit vir my as ek na my medemense kyk. Let maar op: as ’n boemelaar met sy handgeskreBoemelaars we plakkaatjie op ’n straathoek staan, is onsigbaar, vermy motoriste met of so lyk dit oogkontak hom. Hulle kyk weg asof hy nie vir my as bestaan nie. Op sypaadjies loop ek na my voetgangers ’n wye medemense draai om uitgestrekte boemelaarskyk hande, hul koppe weggedraai asof hulle iets sleg ruik.

Ek weet die owerhede raai ons voortdurend af om vir hulle geld te gee, want “so kry jy hulle nooit van die strate af nie”.

En ja, ek was ook al vuurwarm onder die kraag wanneer my sypaadjie voor die huis bemors is ná ’n deurtog van vullisdromgrawers.

Maar skielik het dié boemelaar met die pluime rook voor sy gesig, my laat besef hy is van dieselfde vlees en bloed as ek.

Hy ervaar dieselfde emosies as almal van ons. Dalk is sy vel spreekwoordelik dikker as ander s’n, maar dit gebeur seker as jy gereeld beledig en afgejak word – jy pantser jouself daarteen.

Ek het uit my motor geklim en langs hom op die sypaadjie gaan sit, hom gevra wat sy naam is. Aanvanklik was hy agterdogtig en skugter, maar gaandeweg het hy sy verhaal vertel. Ons het seker vir amper ’n halfuur gesels. Toe ek opstaan om te ry, het hy liggies aan my broekspyp getrek. “Dankie, vir’ie geselsie, Meneer. Ek appreciate dit baie!” Hy’t glimlaggend vir my gewuif toe ek ry.

Ek was vir baie jare ’n onderwyser by die veelbesproke skool in Pretoria. Ek kan u verseker daar is nooit teen enige kind gediskrimmineer nie.

Menige wit meisie is huis toe gestuur om haar hare te gaan regmaak nadat sy haar hare gekleur of laat perm het.

Dit gaan oor hare wat gepas is vir ’n skooluniform.

Om reëls te gehoorsaam het nog nooit innovasie of skeppendheid onderdruk nie.

Die “gesonde werksetiek” waarvan Rudie van Rensburg in sy rubriek “Staak tog dié kleinlike haarklowery” in TygerBurger van 7 September praat, word juis gekweek deur kinders te leer om reëls en regulasies te gehoorsaam.

Oor laatkommery net dit: Geen skool of ander instansie kan optimaal funksioneer as leerders of werknemers toegelaat word om laat op te daag nie. Nie net loop ’n laatkommer ’n deel van die les mis nie, maar dit onderbreek ook die onderwyser se les en die ander kinders se konsentrasie.

Phone power ‘not in our hands’ Having read the letter by MP Giquel (“Caught out”, TB, 7 September), I suffered the same fate – an unsolicited call resulting in the following: A totally fraudulent presentation of what was on offer and at what commitment. This cellular service provider was unscrupulous. I say “service” with a heavy heart as they are bandits.

Let’s name them – it was Vodacom. An example of a blatant lie is that it is a free device, but you get billed.

They say no, it’s not a new contract or commitment, yet it is. Promises to revert when you call never materialise.

They all hide behind call centres and you never get hold of anyone “real”.

These are big companies with huge legal resources, but we are being held hostage by corporate business and their unscrupulous practices.

Maybe we should band together and bring a class action lawsuit?

A free router and R100 cheaper contract – didn’t happen. Instead I got double billed for two months.

Confusion over sign facing wrong way Your 7 September edition had a letter from Mike about the damage and noise caused by speeding drivers along Vryburger Avenue in Bothasig (“DA challenged to curb speedsters”).

Vehicles driven along Bosmansdam Road (M8), just after it crosses the M7, towards Plattekloof Road, will reach the robot at the intersection of Bosmansdam Road and Vryburger Road on the left and Edgemead Drive on the right. Drivers follow the

far left lane which curves and joins Vryburger Road.

I’m puzzled that the yield sign on the traffic island faces the traffic already in Vryburger Road. Should it not face the stream of traffic wanting to filter into Vryburger Road?

No fees payable for City job offers Beter sekerheid is nodig by wedloop It has come to our attention that a fake nursing sister, falsely alleging an association with the City of Cape Town’s Honeyside Clinic in Athlone, is offering residents “pre-approved” cleaner job opportunities via text message for a fee of R159.

I would like to caution the public against falling for scams with regards to job offers with the City.

One scammed resident alleges she received a text message informing her that her job application as a cleaner over weekends had been approved. The text message also promised daily earnings of R420.

She was told to deposit a sum of R159 at Shoprite and to send the reference number to the fraudster.

The text message said the money was to provide uniforms and badges and that she had to report for duty the next day after depositing the money.

I would like to appeal to the public who may have fallen victim to this particular scam to please open a case with the South African Police Service for appropriate action and to report it to the City for our information.

I want to urge residents to be extra vigilant when it comes to such job offers.

Offers of employment with requests for payment of fees are fraudulent.

My dogter het verlede Saterdagoggend die 10 kmfondsinsamelingwedloop van Jan Kriel in Kuilsrivier gaan hardloop om hulle te ondersteun. Sy gaan gereeld Saterdag hardloop, maar besluit toe om vir ’n goeie doel hulle te ondersteun.

Toe sy ná die wedloop by haar motor kom, vind sy dat haar handsak met als daarin saam met twee duur selfone gesteel is. Die linkervoordeur is oopgebreek.

Die voertuig was omtrent 30 m van die hoofingang geparkeer, waar ’n hele paar polisielede en sekerheidsbeamtes gestaan het. Toe sy hulle vra of hulle nie iets opgemerk het nie, is sy meegedeel dat daar verlede jaar by sewe voertuie ingebreek is.

Meer lede gaan nie dié probleem oplos as hulle nie hul werk pligsgetrou doen nie. As daar verlede jaar by sewe voertuie ingebreek is, hoekom word daar nie voorsorg getref dat dit nie vanjaar weer gebeur nie?

Só gaan daar nie mense opdaag wat uit die goedheid van hul hart die skool probeer ondersteun nie.

n Saturday 8 October, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) is celebrating African Penguin Awareness Day, dedicated to raising worldwide awareness about the plight of the endangered African penguin.

This year, the organisation is taking the celebrations global with their “Pennies for Penguins” campaign and asking penguin lovers all over the world to start their own fundraising campaign for African penguins.

Penguin supporters are encouraged to use the online fundraising platform, Givengain, to set up their campaign in just a few minutes at www.givengain.com/cc/ penniesforpenguins.

Givengain is a safe and secure platform where supporters can use a variety of ways to raise funds on behalf of Sanccob like running a race, hosting a cake sale, selling art or cycling to work for a month and getting family and friends to sponsor each kilometre. Every cent raised will support Sanccob’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts with African penguins.

Sanccob is encouraging supporters to share their activities on social media and tag Sanccob in their tweets and posts.

The most creative and engaging activities will win an opportunity to tip a penguin box at the penguin release in Simon’s Town (Cape Town) at the official Penguin Festival on 8 Saturday October.

International supporters will stand a chance to win a Sanccob hamper for the most creative post. The competition is open to individuals, schools and businesses and there are different prizes for each category.

With the help of partners such as SANParks, Sanccob admits close to 1500 African penguins (and 1000 other seabirds) for rehabilitation to its centres and releases them back into to the wild to boost the wild African penguin population. Alarmingly, only 2.5% of the African penguin population remain in the wild today.

All proceeds from the Pennies for Penguins campaign will go towards Sanccob’s rehabilitation and conservation work in aid of the endangered African penguin and other seabirds.

In addition to the campaign, African Penguin Awareness Day will be celebrated at two locations this year. The official SANParks and Sanccob Penguin Festival will be held at the Navy Sports Field in Simon’s Town on 8 October and a second penguin release and festival at the Stony Point penguin colony in Betty’s Bay on 15 October, hosted by Sanccob and CapeNature.

Both events include fun-filled activities for young and old – all in the name of saving the endangered African penguin.

Puppet Guy takes a playful stance LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl

I

t takes an interesting imagination to look at a sheepskin slipper and a feather duster and see an ostrich.

But that’s precisely the point of comedian Conrad Koch’s new show, Puppet Guy. Probably best known for his puppet Chester Missing, this new production sees Conrad step out from behind his well-loved character to reinvent ventriloquism.

After studying at the College of Magic, Conrad stepped onto the comedy scene in the 90s when the industry was still very much in its infancy. He just happened to be presenting his comedy with a doll. “I just loved the idea,” Conrad states simply.

He points out that a huge amount of South Africans aren’t very familiar with the art of ventriloquism. Politicians call Conrad to speak to Chester and he says: “I’ve had very powerful people ask: ‘How is he talking?’”

In fact, Chester’s even been taken to court.

But then, as Conrad points out, “ventriloquist” is the last English word a person would learn, and there aren’t too many around in South Africa.

“That’s partly why the show’s called Puppet Guy,” he says, “because that’s what people call me.”

Conrad says the new production, which will be on stage at the Baxter Theatre on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 September, is “really” fun. “I’m really in a good space.”

He explains that it’s not always easy being the “political lightning rod” he has become known as. “It gets depressing and emotionally hard to process.” With an MA in social anthropology and a keen interest in current affairs, Conrad’s political satire has earned him two Emmy nominations for his work with Late Night News.

The idea behind Chester’s character when Conrad first took him on stage was to ask: “Who are we as a nation?”

That’s why he was brown at first – to satirically reflect Conrad’s own white privilege

“in a way for us to have a conversation.” It’s also why he looks like a vinyl toy: to debunk the myth that everything from Africa “has to be carved out of a piece of wood”.

Chester’s narrative sees him exposing how he was forced to be of colour and accusing Conrad of “black face” before refusing to carry on that way. “Now we’re talking about politics in general, and about race, but not only about race.”

While Chester has featured heavily in Conrad’s previous shows, this time around he’ll be making puppets out of weird objects, doing silly things with them and even doing Snapchat live on stage.

While he feels that his previous work has been strong in a South African context, he says: “I’m trying to make stuff that’s strong anywhere in the world, and is relatable across political affiliations in South Africa.”

He doesn’t believe that anything is apolitical, but says: “The stance of playfulness is my political position,” adding “if you are someone who isn’t into politics, this show is also for you”.

With Puppet Guy, Conrad will be going back to being a ventriloquist and focusing on this aspect of his act by making jokes about what he does and “going crazy” with puppets.

Last year saw Conrad took part in Just for Laughs, Montreal’s annual comedy festival with Comedy Central. He has also performed in New York and watched the Edinburgh Festival. “The learning I walked away with there, in terms of where the edge is, subject matter, where comedy is going, where ventriloquism is going and where it is in the world, influenced me.”

Puppet Guy is just the beginning for Conrad. He hopes to eventually put together a show that can tour overseas and still be relatable to international audiences.

Top boxers in action at tournament C

ape Town’s two leading boxing promotional teams, Duma Boxing Events, headed by Vuyani Nogaga, and Insane Boxing Promotions owned by Cammy Fernandez and Savva Savvas, join hands in bringing yet another exhilarating professional boxing tournament to the Western Cape on Friday night.

The first bout starts at 18:45 at the Theo Marais Sports Hall in Milnerton (opposite Makro) sporting some serious and furious action with a line-up of some of Cape Town’s finest young fighters.

In the main fight of the evening, Nicholas Radley, unbeaten Cape Town based Light Heavyweight champion, will have his hands full against the awkward Peter “No Deal” Mbowa from the DRC, also based in Cape Town. Mbowa boasts a record of four wins and one defeat only when he was stopped by

Ludolph Pistorius. All of his other victories were knockouts in bouts he had in the DRC and Uganda. Mbowa is – just like Radley – well known on the local Martial Arts scene with a number of Thai and kick-boxing fights to his name. Radley is a former SA Muay Thai champion and is known as a devastated puncher and can use both hands equally well inside the ring. Radley is taller than most others in this division and this makes him work even so much more harder.

Radley had an impressive win in his last outing at the War on the Shore series at the Wild Coast Sun when he stopped Patrick Nquda from Gabon in round three. Radley is rated fourth in SA and with Ryno Liebenberg in action soon in Sweden and Thomas Oosthuizen recently beating Daniel Bruwer, his chances in challenging for the SA title is coming closer and closer, so the Mbowa fight

will be a good test for Radley.

In the main supporting bout over six rounds in the middleweight division Jimmy “The Beast” Mabundji – rated Nr 5 in SA – comes from a very controversial decision defeat against Johannesburg based Welcome Ntshingila for the interim WBA Pan Africa title. Earlier this year Mabundji stopped the then mandatory Light Heavyweight contender, Makhozonke Zwengu, in the third round to win the Rumble 1 belt as the best boxer of the show. Mabundji, however, will have his hands full this time against the dangerous Uitenhage based Thandolwethu Wole who had some good wins by KO this year against Dwye Rickert and Mveli Qani. Wole is Nr 10 in the SA Super Middleweight division and is trained by top Cruiserweight contender Unathi Jacobs. Mabundji – trained and managed by Cammy Fernandez

and Simphiwe Tom – is ready to ensure the rest of the middleweight boxers are aware that he is one not to be underestimated. He came to SA from the DRC with a record of five wins, one loss and one draw, and has improved to 10 wins with three defeats and one draw with four KOs. Wole comes to the ring with a record of eight wins – all by way of KO – and also three defeats and three draws.

The ever dangerous Cristiano Ndombassy will take on Port Elizabeth’s Lukhanyo Kaptein while Thembani “Baby Jake” Mabangatha will take on Kaptein’s stablemate, Yanga Ndobayana, in a junior lightweight clash.

In a Heavyweight bout Knife Didier will face the likeable Unati Ndlebe.

Top rated amateur boxers Gregory “the Hitman” Gans, Faeez Jacobs, Tyson Esau and school learner Dilwakho all make their respective pro-debuts.

Durbell veilig oor eerste kompetisie-hekkie SAREL BURGER Durbanville-Bellville se senior rugbyspan is veilig oor die eerste hekkie in die nasionale Goue Beker-kompetisie vir die verskillende bonde se topspanne.

Die Durbies het met hul oorwinning van 40-14 die afgelope Saterdag oor Old Selbornians, die Grens-unie se topspan, dit duidelik uitgestippel dat ’n span nie noodwendig oor briljante individue hoef te beskik nie.

Onontbeerlike samehorigheid, onderlinge steun en doelgerigte samespel kan netsowel deurslaggewend wees op pad na sukses.

En dit is presies wat Durbell teen die OosLondenaars bewerkstellig het. Ja, die tuis-

span het wel groter seggenskap as Old Selbornians in die vaste fasette getoon, die Durbanvillers se taktiese en stelskopwerk was strate beter as dié van die besoekers; die span se planmatigheid was opvallend en volgehoue knap verdediging het beslis nie ontbreek nie.

Maar dit was veral die vyftienman-rugby wat die Durbies uitgestal het, wat die sterk Oos-Londense span geknak het.

Hoewel die Tygerbergers in die eerste skof die meeste aanvalswerk gedoen het, was hulle met die draaislag net 16-14 voor. In die tweede helfte het Durbell egter na vyfde rat oorgeskakel en die Oos-Londenaars behoorlik laat les opsê. Vier verdere drieë is gedruk

terwyl die telbord aan die besoekers se kant bly stilstaan het.

Old Selbornians het in ’n groot mate ook sy eie ondergang bewerkstellig. Ongeoorloofde spel het die skeidsregter, Nathan Barry, genoodsaak om die besoekers telkens te straf – dit het in die loop van die kragmeting drie van hul spelers met geelkaarte van die veld verwilder.

Die beste raad wat Bobby Joubert, die Durbies se hoofafrigter, vandeesweek aan sy span kan gee, is dat sy manne baie gou weer padlangs moet stap, want eerskomende Saterdag wag ’n steil bult.

KILLARNEY: KARTS, RALLY ON THIS WEEKEND

he 2016 Western Cape Karting Championship heads into the final stretch at the Killarney kart track’s penultimate seventh round races on Saturday.

Killarney will on Friday evening also be home for the SA Rally Championship in four night stages.

However, with all the Cape karting titles still up for grabs, some of them looking pretty well set and done, while others remain set for a huge fight.

The baby Cadet class catering for under 8-year-old kids is among the tightest tussles – just one point separates championship leader Joaquin de Oliveira from Paul Malcolm (FastOil/Charl Electric), with Reza Levy (Jive) just three more points adrift and Reese Koorzen another eight points behind.

But don’t discount Joshua Smit, Ethan Stier, Ethan Deacon or Mischa Williams of Table View from this fight – all of them are capable of winning and are ready to spice things up.

A step-up to the primary school Maxterino 60cc class sees Charl Visser (Battery Energy RKT Kosmic), Joseph Oelz (Zanardi) and Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic) in an

equally close title spat, with an equally interesting fight going down for fourth place between Tate Bishop (Kosmic), Kai Van Zijl (CRG) Jason MacBeath (Zanardi), younger Visser brother Kyle (Zanardi) and Nicholas Sage. But rest assured – Maxterino will put on a spectacular show.

The Western Province high school Junior Max 125cc championship sees Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) in a comfortable lead with Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Freight Kosmic) and Dario Busi (Automan CRG) fighting over second, but still able to topple Coetzee on the championship table.

There’s another huge fight going down for fourth in this championship chase between Andrew Rackstraw (TonyKart), Daniel Duminy (SMG Kosmic), Aidan Strydom (TurboTech CRG) and JP Hamman (Hammanshof Kosmic), all of whom are well capable of winning races among a strong grid of other teenage fighters.

Dino Stermin (Designer Trims RKT Kosmic) leads the 125cc open Max Challenge class relatively comfortably over Delano Fowler (Suprocom WOrr FA), while there

are a few wildcards capable of winning, including Polo Cup racer Umpie Swart (CRG) and Giordano Lupini (Monroe Bakkie & Car Kosmic) who returns to karting after a year way racing in the Cape GTi Challenge. Never ignore the rapidly returning to form Marco Joos and ever-improving class regulars Nicholas Jacobs and Arnold du Toit from this fight.

WP DD2 gearbox title rivals Jonathan Thomas (Partners Hair CRG), Julian van der Watt (RKT Kosmic) and Tristan de Nobrega (Race Driver SA CRG) can be expected to continue their fight at the head of that title chase, while Aidan Hughes, Christopher Vrettos and Conor Hughes will be in the picture too. The ever-popular Cape Clubmen will entertain as usual, with Jody van Rensburg, Kian van der Merwe, Andrew Thomas and Isabelle Fowler chasing overall club championship honours there.

Two new classes using detuned Rotax 125cc water-cooled engines are rapidly gaining traction in Cape karting, with the under-9 Micro Max 125cc class fought out between championship leader Kyle Visser,

with Joaquin De Oliveira and Reza Levy tied in second. The new under-14 Mini Max has Charl Visser leading Kai Van Zyl, Tate Bishop, Troy Dolinschek and Thaqib Meyer.

V On Friday evening Killarney is the scene of the annual Toyota Cape Dealer Rally for WRC-style cars with no less than four special stages on and around the circuit, racing in the dark. The event moves to Malmesbury on Saturday meaning Friday evening is the only opportunity to see the national (and regional) rally starts and their cars in action.
