T
he National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) has advised the City of Cape Town against approving any development applications within a 16 km radius of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station up until July 2016. Any development that could increase the population and, as a result, extend the emergency evacuation time in case of a disaster will therefore be highly unlikely for the time being. Development in Melkbosstrand, parts of Bloubergstrand, all the way to Parklands, West Beach and a large part of Atlantis will be put on hold until the NNR has approved a new Traffic Evacuation Model (TEM).
The NNR has supported the 2012 TEM, but to date not approved it. Frustrated developers are sitting with their hands in their hair, because virtually every application sent to council for approval has been objected to by Disaster Risk Management, which enforces the stance of the NNR. The R140 billion Wescape mixed-use development along the N7 which would include housing for about 800 000 people has been put on hold and the Rivergate development near Sandown Road Link received plenty of opposition from Disaster Risk Management since the get-go. The former falls in the 16 km “red zone” radius of the power plant and the latter lies on the very edge of it.
Rivergate is also a mixed land use development, with a commercial strip on either side of Sandown Road, a business and light industrial area to the north of the commercial strip, and a more affordable residential area south of the commercial strip extending down to the Diep River. The marketing director of the ASKA Property Group behind the Rivergate development, Tony Clarke, is curious why it is taking the NNR so long to approve the TEM. “Once there were questions by the NNR whether the area could be evacuated within 16 hours a few years ago, the city was approached by a consultant engineering firm to show that the area could in fact be evacuated in time. The annual Santa for Seniors project moved up a gear this year when hip-hop dancers entertained elderly residents at Huis Zonnekus and Huis Ysterplaat. This innovative way of bringing Christmas to the doorstep of those who are often forgotten – even by their own families – certainly had pulses racing in excitement. The Circle of Friends, a group of three local women who aim to make a difference, not only organised entertainment, but also delivered gifts and well-wishes to hundreds of elderly people. Lucy Walsh, Janine Breeze and Clarissa
Witten have asked the community to donate goods to them in order to distribute these in the Milnerton area over Christmas. They also needed volunteers to help them distribute these and make the day extra special for residents at the retirement homes. Just a few weeks before the date set aside for the project (on Saturday) they were still in desperate need of donations, but the last minute is notoriously good for South Africans. Says Witten: “I had complete faith that everything would work out! Every now and again I was a little worried, because we committed, but I knew people would pull together!” In the end the Circle of Friends collected
in excess of 1 000 gifts and there were more than 50 volunteers. The Circle of Friends joined volunteers and went past many houses of elderly people and delivered gifts personally and then on Saturday they went to the retirement homes and delivered the rest. Snacks were served, Father Christmas made an appearance and, as mentioned above, a hip-hop crew wowed the audience with their moves. This was undoubtedly a day to remember for the beneficiaries as well as the recipients. The Circle of Friends have done it again – the only question that remains is, how will they better it next year?

MyCiTi special needs access tops MyCiTi’s universal accessibility policy has officially been named one of the most innovative policies in the world in terms of ensuring that all special needs passengers can make use of the service. The MyCiTi special needs facilities include tactile paving for the blind; boarding bridges to ensure level boarding between the stops, the stations and the bus; audible pedestrian crossings; and safety features including CCTV cameras. The international disability organisation Zero Project announced yesterday that it would highlight the MyCiTi policy on universal (special needs) access, as an “Innovative Policy 2014”. “We are delighted that the MyCiTi team’s contribution towards the creation of an inclusive city has been recognised. “The announcement coincides with International Day for Persons with Disabilities...” said the city’s mayoral committee member for transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.

mation Forum said it would be possible to evacuate the five km zone within four hours and the 16 km zone within 16 hours as stipulated, but this did not take into account the proposed Wescape development. The city now has until 31 January to submits its action plan with details of mass care centres and evacuation measures to the nuclear regulator. The NNR recently submitted a report to the City Council in which it advised the city to exercise caution when approving plans that will increase the number of visitors moving through the red zone. It should apparently limit approvals for projects that include retirement homes, schools and accommodation for the disabled. Any developments that would increase the population by 10 % in the north-east of the 5 to 16 km zone should also be discouraged.
The public is warned about criminals who have been posing as city officials in order to rob households in various areas. Reports have been received from suburbs throughout the city and residents are urged to demand that city identify cards are presented before letting anyone into their homes. “It has come to our attention that individuals are approaching households within Pinelands and surrounding areas, claiming that they are from the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department and that they need to install shower heads to save water. On some occasions they claim that they are from Eskom and need to install new bulbs or put reflective lights on the gates. The reports we have received indicate that these individuals are criminals who are robbing residents at gunpoint, and not city officials,” says Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for utility services. “It is our practice to inform our residents ahead of the time when we are going to be running programmes or projects in their areas.” Identity cards, says Sonnenberg, should as a matter of procedure, be clearly visible on the person at all times. Maitland police recently arrested a suspect for the possession of stolen property as well as the suspicion of stealing about R155 000 of computer equipment. Says police spokesperson, W/O Siyabulela Vukubi: “At approximately 08:30 on 29 November we received a business burglary complaint in Voortrekker Road. A complainant reported that a culprit gained entry through a window in the first floor balcony. Eight laptops and other computer equipment were stolen including two projectors.” An initial investigation led the police to a house in Montague Street, where the suspect was found in possession of a jacket that was allegedly stolen from the same business and he was arrested. Concludes Vukubi: “We wish to encourage the members of the community who inform the police about crime that occurs in their vicinity to continue doing so.”

MyCiTi now in Century City The City of Cape Town’s Integrated rapid transit system, the MyCiTi service, was extended to Century City on 30 November. Chris Blackshaw, CEO of the Century City Property Owners’ Association responsible for the day to day running of Century City, said the launch of the new Century City – Montague Gardens service (MyCiTi route 251) had got off to a good start and was being well supported by passengers. “As can be expected there were one or two small teething problems but these were quickly ironed out and the take-up of the new service has been excellent,” he said. He added that commuters could now buy myconnect cards at three different points in Century City, kiosks at the Ratanga Road Public Transport Interchange (PTI), the Century Avenue PTI and the Shell Garage Canal Walk. “This is an important milestone for Century City on both a symbolic and practical level as MyCiTi really ensures that Century City is connected to the broader Cape Town community.” Blackshaw said they looked forward to the increased take-up of the service as fu-

For the fourth consecutive year the Fellows for Cancer Trust in Melkbosstrand held a highly successful gala evening and fundraiser at the Atlantic Beach Hotel in Melkbosstrand. This year, the gala evening was attended by approximately 120 people, with all the regular supporters, but also a number of new friends in attendance. An exceptional amount of close to R320 000 was raised. These much needed funds will go towards providing aid in the local Melkbosstrand and surrounding communities, where individuals are not in a position to afford the medical costs associated with cancer treatment. Corne Krige, ex-Bok captain and one of the trustees of the FFCT, opened the event as MC and provided the guests with some background of the Trust’s creation and ongoing activities. Auctioneer Joey Burke was his normal effective self, keeping all involved and creating a lot of fun in the process. Bidding for the items on auction, ranging from art, sports memorabilia, wines, jewellery to holiday and travel packages, was brisk. Exceptional bidding prices were also realised for interesting items such as paintings by artist Richard Scott and boxed and signed football boots of Lionel Messi and David Villa. Canal Walk set the bar very high last year when they invited kids into a giant freezer – aptly named Snow World. So this year they had a tough act to follow with the Snow Play Park. The advertisement for the latest edition certainly whetted the appetite, but adults accompanying their kids into the “park” will wonder what it is their children are smiling about.
It, is, of course, not about the adults. So when one judges the wide eyes and smiles of the little ones then it is safe to assume that the Snow Play Park is once again proving to be a hit If your kids like to slide on ice, marvel at colourful decorations of sweeties, candy canes and all things snowy then this is the place to go. There are small ice/snow filled areas and a charming, unimposing rollercoaster. A “snow globe” in the middle was also a favourite and wonderful photos were
taken there by keen parents. Tickets cost R70, with a R30 special for snow play for tots under two, and R50 tickets for mini riders between two and five years. Those who simply want to wander through this “jolly folly” and experience the magic of the season pay just R20. Children are, of course, not concerned with price. All they want is novelty, and that is what they’ll get at the Snow Play Park. Mission accomplished for Canal Walk!

More parks and islands along Clarendon Crescent are now resembling this one after a nearby island was taken under the wing of a concerned resident and a commendable official.
A few people who cared about beautifying Ysterplaat combined forces and made an island between Clarendon Crescent and Princess Alice Avenue a pleasure to look at. The long, thin stretch of land between the two roads was in dire need of attention, so local resident George Meyering and a friend took it onto themselves to plant a few trees on the island. “It was so dull... There was only one palm tree on the whole island. It looked so barren! A friend and I collected some off-cuts from a dumping ground, planted them and watered every now and again, but it got too expensive.” When they started caring for the park, the local ward councillor, Bernadette le Roux, thanked them for what they were doing, so Meyering phoned her and said they need help. A day which has been billed as “a benefit for the community and charities” was, according to one of the organisers, a great success. The KFC Melkbos and I Will Be Your Voice family day on Saturday was officially held in aid of the Sanwild Rhino Sanctuary, ACVV Koeberg and Cape Craft Centre. The bigger picture was, of course, all about having fun, and the “fun walk” got everyone in the mood. A brisk walk from the Ou Skip Caravan Park to the Purple Ice Cream Parlour on 11th Avenue set the scene, and from there a beach cleanup

event led to games at Melkbosstrand High School and a relaxing evening of live music. The rhino poaching awareness organisation, I Will Be Your Voice founder, Rozanne Visagie, says the highlight of the day was Rion Zeff’s impressive sand sculpture of a rhino. This fundraiser contributed to the the R100 000 that I Will Be Your Voice raised for rhino conservation this year. The introduction of the Cape Craft Centre is another of Visagie’s ambitions. Hoe ’n wonderlike land sal dit dan nie wees om in te bly nie! Eerstens sal almal hul mede-landgenote vergewe. Niemand sal meer met ’n wrok in sy hart rondloop oor ’n sekere mens of groep wat hom of haar in die verlede ingedoen het nie. Rasseharmonie sal hoogty vier. Soos Madiba sy hand van vriendskap uitgesteek het na alle rassegroepe in Suid-Afrika, sal almal mekaar kan omarm in vreedsame voortbestaan. Verdraagsaamheid tussen groepe oor verskille in gewoontes en kulture is een van die grootste lesse wat hy ons probeer leer het. Daar sal geen moord, doodslag en diefstal wees nie. Madiba het hom beywer om geweld onder mense, korrupsie en oneerlikheid tot op die been uit te roei. Onderdrukking van ander mense of groepe sal nooit weer in ons geskiedenis herhaal word nie. Hieronder tel nie net politieke groepe nie, maar ook individue. Gesinsgeweld is ’n goeie voorbeeld van laasgenoemde. Hoewel Madiba se een groot droom dat alle Suid-Afrikaners uit die kloue van armoede moet ontsnap, nog ver van die werklikheid is, is dit iets waarna ons almal kan streef en aan werk. Beter huisvesting en gehalte-onderwys vir almal is die belangrikste boustene vir hierdie Madiba-droom. Kom ons omarm sy nalatenskap nou.

I have noticed a growing trend in the way people dump garden refuse and tree cuttings over their back walls onto public open spaces – out of sight out of mind mentality. Dear neighbour when you dump like this, your problem is solved, but it now becomes a neighbourhood problem. Shame on you. We are proud of our neighbourhood and we are desperately trying to keep it neat and crime-free in conjunction with SAPS and the city. Please do your share. The city is to be commended for their endeavours in keeping our suburb neat and tidy. Keep up the good work. I recommend Law Enforcement visit this area mentioned and issue fines to the guilty parties for illegal dumping. So dikwels gee ons vir familie geskenke uit gewoonte, uit verwagting. Gee ons vir die kinders uitspattige geskenke sodat hulle tog net nie moet afsteek by die maatjies nie. Gee eerder aan dié wat dit werklik nodig het. Besluit as gesin of familie saam op ’n organisasie of individue/gesinne vir wie ’n donasie of geskenke werklik ’n verskil sal maak. SA Jeugkoor moes sy swanesang sing ESMÉ ERASMUS Die Suid-Afrikaanse Jeugkoor, wat in Durbanville gesetel was, het verlede Dinsdag sy swanesang gesing met sy laaste optrede by die Mahindra Group Senior Executive Conference in Kaapstad. Dié kinderkoor is in 2005 deur die Fidentia-batebestuursgroep gestig om kinders uit verskillende agtergronde te ontwikkel. Die doodsklok het vir die koor begin lui in 2007 toe Fidentia gelikwideer is. Petro SA het die borgskap toe vir drie en ’n half jaar oorgeneem, maar het die borgskap teen einde 2011 beeïndig. Geen groot borgskap kon sedertdien bekom word nie en daar is drie weke gelede besluit om die koor finaal te ontbind, het André de la Harpe, stigterslid en
gewese voorsitter van die koor, gesê. Altesame 126 kinders van oraloor het oor die jare hul matriekloopbaan voltooi, terwyl hulle lid van die koor was, volgens De la Harpe. Die koshuisouers, James Horne en sy vrou Cecilia, albei afgetredenes, het vir meer as ’n jaar die kinders versorg sonder enige betaling, maar in Junie vanjaar die koshuis verlaat. Volgens Phil Robinson, wat die koor se leier is sedert Maart vanjaar toe die vorige koorleier bedank het, is meeste van die kinders reeds huis toe. Daar is nog ses kinders, wat volgende jaar in matriek is, waarvoor Robinson ’n borgskap bekom het om hul skoolloopbaan hier te voltooi. Hy en sy vrou, Sandra, het na die kinders in die koshuis help omsien

City news includes season green light Subcouncil 1, which includes Table View, Melkbosstrand and parts of Milnerton, have been officially named Blaauwberg Subcouncil. This news was revealed by chairperson Heather Brenner at the last subcouncil meeting of the year recently. Brenner also congratulated Table View Nature Reserve – it has won Reserve of the Year by the city’s Environmental Resource Management Department for the second year in a row. With the festive season now in full swing, Brenner also touched on the “Festive Season Preparedness Plan”. The Plan is supported by Metro Police, Traffic Services, Law Enforcement, Fire and Rescue, Disaster Risk Management, Sports and Recreation, Cleansing and the city’s Events Office incorporating some 2 500 staff, a further 2 352 EPWP (Extended Public Works Programme) recruits and 400 to 700 lifesavers. The plan started on 1 November and includes a Pre-Season Phase, a Festive Season Phase from 5 December to 4 January, an End of Season Phase that concludes on 18 January, and a Rolling Enforcement Phase is in action until 20 March when the Pre-Easter Phase kicks in. The Easter Festive Season Phase ends on April 9, the Post-Easter Phase on 26 April and the entire campaign ends with Freedom Day on 27 April and Workers’ Day on 1 May. Six months of intense activity that will focus on the city’s beaches, swimming pools, amenities, events, popular locations, tourist attractions and major transit routes.
‘We Love Madiba’ art on exhibition After successful showings in both Johannesburg and London, where more than 5 000 visitors enjoyed the exhibit, the South African Gold Coin Exchange’s “We Love Mandela: Art inspired by Madiba” exhibition opened at the V&A Waterfront’s Clock Tower last Monday night. With Madiba’s passing, this art exhibition is a perfect tribute to a great man. The exhibition showcases a significant collection of art including paintings, sculptures, photography, cartoons, beadwork, prints and gold medallions from a variety of artists, and is destined to be displayed in other capital cities following its launch in London earlier this year. “We Love Mandela: Art inspired by Madiba” is the culmination of numerous art exhibitions held during Mandela’s 90th, and most recently his 94th birthday, and feature work by artists including: Wayne Barker, Richard Chauke, David Koloane, Jurgen Schadeburg, Kagisa Pat Mautloa, Billy and Jane Makhubele, Johannes Maswanganyi, Collen Maswanganyi, Rankadi Daniel Mosako, Velaphi Mzimba, Roy Ndinisa, Len Sak, Joachim Schonfeldt, Eric Sher, Alfred Thoba, Lena Woolf, Susan Woolf and Zapiro. Food donations called for Every year it gets harder and harder for the unfortunate people to survive. This sad state has spurred Elizabeth Viljoen on to ask for any food donations that will help provide hungry people with a plate of food. This Christmas she wants to distribute meals such as chicken, pasta, mince, a desert or vegetables. Even coffee and tea could be distributed. Last year Viljoen received generous donations of not only food, but blankets, books and old clothes as well. All donations will be handed out at Martin Adams Hall in Ysterplaat from 15:00 to 16:00 on 24 December. ie vraag word dikwels gevra wat ons onder die bipolêre versteuring moet verstaan. Eerstens, ons weet dit is ’n versteuring en meer spesifiek ’n gemoedsversteuring. Met ander woorde ’n versteuring van jou gemoed, van hoe jy voel. Dit beteken jou gemoedstoestand is nie stabiel nie, maar drastiese skommelinge kom in jou gemoed voor. Alle mense ervaar gemoedskommelinge. Dit is deel van menswees. Soms het ons goeie dae waarin ons besonder goed voel. Ander kere is ons gemoed maar weer aan die lae kant. Hierdie veranderinge in die gemoed is normaal. Wanneer daar egter drastiese en buitengewone gemoedsfluktuasies voorkom en dit belemmer jou gesonde lewensfunksionering, kyk ons na ’n moontlike gemoedsversteuring. Dan het ons ook hier te doen met ’n versteuring van ’n bipolêre aard. Die woord “bipolêr” het twee aspekte.
Eerste aspek Die eerste aspek is “bi” en dit beteken “twee”. In Engels beteken die woord “bicycle” dit is ’n fiets met twee wiele. Die tweede aspek is “polêr” en dit beteken “pole”. Ons kry in geografie byvoorbeeld die Noordpool en die Suidpool. Nou wat is hierdie pole by die versteuring? Die een pool is die depressiewe pool. Met ander woorde die persoon ervaar ’n intense neerslagtigheid, gevoel van hopeloosheid, verlies van eiewaarde, verlies van energie, pessimisme omtrent die toekoms en onsekerheid. Die ander pool is die maniese fase. Dit beskryf die toename in rusteloosheid en energie. Die persoon is praterig, onverskillig en in ’n euforiese staat. Daar is sprake van oordrewe motoriese aktiwiteit. Hy voel of hy alles kan doen en toon roekelose gedrag soos buitengewone spandabelrigheid, impulsiewe dobbelary, riskante seksuele gedrag en onbeheerbare drange om iets te doen. Dit kan ook oorgaan in irritasie, woede, verwardheid en gevoel om vasgekeer te wees. Daarom het bipolêre versteuring voorheen as die manies-depressiewe versteuring bekend gestaan. Ons kan dus nou sien die bipolêre versteuring is ’n gemoedsversteuring waar drastiese skommelinge, oftewel fluktuasies, tussen die twee pole van depressie en manies voorkom. Frekwensie Die patroon en die frekwensie van hoë en lae fases wissel van persoon tot persoon. Só kan een mens vir ’n langer tydperk – weke of maande – in ’n fase verkeer. By ’n ander individu is die wisseling vinniger en meer drasties. Dit maak diagnose uit die aard van die saak moeiliker. Die bipolêre versteuring is ’n ernstige toestand wat uiters negatief op ’n mens se lewe kan impakteer. Dit kan huwelike vernietig, verhoudinge met vriende skaad, jou akademiese studie negatief beïnvloed, jou loopbaanvooruitsigte en bevordering kniehalter. Dit kan ook sosiale interaksie belemmer, jou sport negatief raak en jou lewenslus en energievlakke laat kwyn. Dit impakteer dus negatief op jou gesonde lewensfunksionering. Gelukkig is dit behandelbaar en daarom behoort jy ’n professionele kundige te besoek wat hierdie versteuring kan diagnoseer en behandel. Staatmaker vir woonwa Ons hou almal duim vas dat die storms nou finaal verby is en dat ons maar die tente kan uithaal en lug gee en die woonwa kan begin pak. Die vakansie is om die draai! Vir die moderne kampeerder is dit slegs sy bed en dak oor sy kop wat anders is as by die huis. Alle moderne geriewe is daar waar hy kamp – al die kombuis-katoetertjies word ingepak, asook die wyeskerm TV-stel; en moenie die gemakstoele vergeet om die skeidsregter in gerief te skel nie. Iets wat egter glad nie verander het nie, is die vakansiekos wat ingepak word. Die staatmakers soos beskuit, koekies, soetgoed en suurlemoenstroop is in alle erns in Oktober reeds begin maak. Amper belangriker as die peusel- en lekkergoed is die piekels en ingelegde slaaie. Hierdie is ma se redding om ook so bietjie te kan ontspan langs die see. As die kinders eers weg is strand toe, kry geen ma hulle voor ete in die hande om te kom help slaai maak nie. Ek deel een van my eie resepte met die lesers vandag. KERRIESOUSBONE Jy het nodig: 1 pakkie (500g) suikerboontjies (skoon gemaak en oornag geweek) . 1 eetlepel olie . 3 uie, gekap . 1 teelepel knoffel, fyn gekap . 1 eetlepel borrie . 3 teelepels kerriepasta óf 15 tot 20 ml matige kerriepoeier . 1¼ koppies wit asyn . 1¼ koppies wit of ligbruin suiker . 5 ml Ina Paarmangeurselsout . 3 ml gewone sout . 2 eetlepels Maizena om mee te verdik

Só maak mens: Kook die boontjies tot sag in skoon water (sonder sout). Gooi van die water af tot daar omtrent ’n koppie water oorbly as die boontjies gaar is. Voeg die olie, knoffel, uie, borrie en kerriepasta of poeier in ’n aparte pot en braai dit baie stadig vir 5 minute. Verwyder van die hitte. Roer die suiker en asyn by, asook die soute. Roer tot suiker opgelos het. Voeg nou die kerriemengsel by die gaar boontjies en bring dit stadig tot kookpunt. Meng die Maizena met bietjie van die sous in die pot en meng goed deur, terwyl dit stadig kook en verdik. Bottel dit dadelik in warm gesteriliseerde flessies en plaas onderstebo tot afgekoel. City says no to staff ‘Christmas boxes’ The city has instructed all of its staff that approaching residents for “Christmas boxes” and donations is against city policy. However, if residents believe that excellent service has been provided, they are at liberty to give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and goodwill. “Problems have also arisen in the past where people posing as city staff have asked for money, sometimes rudely and aggressively. They have also threatened that waste will not be collected if the demand is not met. The city will not tolerate such behaviour,” said the city’s mayoral committee member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg. Residents can report any incidents of intimidation by city staff to the Call Centre on 0860 103 089 during office hours between 08:00 and 16:30. Apart from the date, time and place, a vehicle registration number should be provided so that the culprits can be identified. Such reports will be investigated immediately and, where residents are willing to testify, the city will be able to prosecute offenders. Should you be aware of outsiders posing as city officials, report this to the police.

one of Joshua Grierson’s recordings has ever captured the singer/songwriter’s enigmatic stage personality ... until now. The Brackenfell musician will be releasing his latest offering, Grierson and His Friends, at Café Roux in Noordhoek on Wednesday 18 December. The live album was recorded during a performance at The Alma Cafe in May this year, and includes the songs he performed with guests, along with the stories he told on the evening. The double disc will be his first album in about seven years. “Because I’ve spent so many years without an album, I’ve had to grow my fan base with my live shows,” Joshua explains, adding: “My live shows have kind of become these experiences where I take people on a bit of a journey and every show is different.” “They’ve wanted that full-blooded kind of experience,” Joshua says, pointing to his fans who have over the years been calling
for a new album. “I wanted to give that to people who were asking for it. I needed an album and it was going to be cost effective to do it, so that is why I did it this way,” he says. It was a Skype album with his friend, and long-time fan, Liezel Maree, that turned the recorded material into a plan. “We were talking about what I was doing at the moment and my career, and what I wanted to do and I had aspirations to form a company to get the spotlight on unsigned and unknown artists,” Joshua says. Liezel was keen on the idea and also wanted to help Joshua with the financial costs of releasing his album. The two recently registered their company called Grierson Maree Arts. “I guess it came out of necessity, out of a pure need to facilitate my own career,” Joshua says. He teamed up with another friend, Rash Ferguson, for the album’s booklet design. Joshua says he has always had feelings towards design and how things should be laid out and while he doesn’t have any theoreti-
cal background, he has an eye for it. Rash, from the band Versus the Wolf, did his band’s own designs, for which they won a SAMA for best booklet design. “I felt very comfortable with him doing what I needed him to do,” Joshua says, adding: “He put my thoughts into reality.” Nicolai Roos from Black River Studios mixed and mastered the album and thanks to a cash injection from Maree, Hybrid Media Solutions manufactured the final product. Some of the friends who joined Joshua for the recording of the album are Gene Kierman, Lauren Fowler, Jonathan Tait, Andrew James and Adir Levi, the bassist for one of Joshua’s other projects, which is called Big Exit. Leigh (17) was een van die jongste studente wat vir 2de dan gradeer het. Altesame 55 studente het gradeer vir 2de kyu en 1ste kyu (bruin gordels). Shihan Hennie Bosman het gesê die standaard van gradering was hoog, en hy is trots op die goeie vordering wat gemaak is. Dit is die meeste nog wat vir bruin gordels gradeer het. Mountain biking kicks off in style
T
he Western Cape will play host to the 2014 African Continental Mountain Bike Championships, which will kick off the 2014 mountain biking season in South Africa, from 25 to 26 January. The cross-country (XCO) and downhill (DHI) disciplines will take place at the Willowbridge Shopping Centre on Saturday 25 January, and at Contermanskloof on Sunday 26 January respectively. There is good news for riders wishing to participate as Cycling SA-MTB has confirmed that there will not be a participation quota, and that all riders who wish to compete, may enter. Cycling SA has opened the African Conti-
nental Champs up for maximum participation to create greater opportunities and to be of greater benefit to riders.
Requirements The Elite, under-23 and Junior UCI category riders must compete in SA National Federation kit. Please contact Dellah Paul for your kit requirements, on dellah@cyclingsa.com. The Sub-Veteran, Veteran, Masters, Youth, Sub Junior, Sprogs and Nippers will be competing in the Africa Challenge. Now four years old, the popular Slammer track at Willowbridge has been an inclusion on the SA National XCO Cup Series calendar for the past two seasons.
Located on the banks opposite the Willowbridge Shopping Centre, the location provides easy spectator viewing along most of the course. Track builder Bryan Strauss and his team of volunteers have been working hard to create a course that is suitable for all the various age categories, yet challenging enough for the top riders. Two different tracks will be used on the day: the shorter track for Nippers, and the longer track for all the other categories. The slopes of Contermanskloof in Durbanville will come alive once again for the DHI competition. The trail venue is a 20-minute drive from Cape Town, and the working
farm’s mountain bike trails welcome visitors on a regular basis on the weekends. Chris Nixon describes the course as steep and fast with lots of corners.
Challenge The first few 100 m are relatively tame, and then suddenly steep with some switchbacks. Riders will also face a road gap with a steep landing; a tricky rock garden, a few jumps and a tabletop jump right before the finish. The course drops 236 m in 1.29 km. Tornadoes just too powerful
The victorious Tornadoes of the Table View Tennis Club after winning the Spec Savers Night Team Challenge.

Oostelikes se spelers en ampsdraers sal in die komende reses koppe bymekaar moet sit, want dit gaan werklik vrotsig met dié span. Defending champions, Tornadoes of Table View Tennis Club once again captured the Spec Savers (Bayside) Night Team Challenge recently. Some 300 fans watched the Tornadoes, the hometown favourites, win through to the final when they beat the Vultures (Camps Bay) 16-10. Top South African juniors Calvin Jordaan and Katie Poluta set the pace for the home side when they both won their respective singles matches. It was then former British Davis Cup player Mark Petchey and Scott Whysall who won the men’s doubles followed by Petchey’s daughter Nicole who teamed up with Poluta to win the women’s doubles. Whysall then partnered Didi Blias to win the mixed doubles and give the Tornadoes a clean sweep of rubber wins.
Joining the Tornadoes in the final were the Flying Squirrels (Pinelands) who dominated against the Powers (Parow). In the final, the Tornadoes beat the Flying Squirrels 18-6. Once again Calvin Jordaan and Katie Poluta did their Tornadoes proud by winning their singles rubbers. Jordaan beat Chevaan Davids 4-0 and Poluta beat Michalya Loubsher 4-0. Norman Mcarthy and Nick Kulemkamph gave the Flying Squirrels some home when they won the doubles 4-2 over Yurich Daniels and Rhys Milne. Nicole Petchey and Poluta then again pulled off the women’s doubles win with Whysall and Didi Blias winning the mixed doubles. For their efforts, The Tornadoes took home R10 000 courtesy of sponsors Spec Savers.
