JOZI TO CAPE TOWN: 5 000 CHILDREN TAUGHT ABOUT ABUSE
Cycle tour educates NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

n South Africa, countless children are raped daily – most of them are girls between eight and 10 years old. Instead of becoming despondent, a group of cyclists have just told thousands of chil-
dren how to stop abuse, while completing what is said to be one of the most gruelling cycling tours. The annual Xtreme for Kids Cycle Tour finished at Willowbridge Shopping Centre on Saturday 7 March, whereafter cyclists rested for a few hours before tackling the Cape Town Cycle Tour on Sunday 8 March.
The Xtreme tour has been a yearly highlight for many since it started in 2013 and is organised by child protection organisation Matla a Bana. Annually it sees eight cyclists completing a 1 904 km journey from Johannesburg to Cape Town (excluding the Cycle Tour’s added 109 km).
They are traditionally joined by a small theatre group. Over the past 11 days, the group stopped at numerous rural primary schools along the way, where they taught an average of around 5 000 children about abuse and how to report it. V To page 4
