he local beachfront will have had a facelift by this time next year, thanks to a Repairs, Maintenance and Upgrade Plan for the coastline from Milnerton to Melkbos. The city’s Sports and Recreation Department has already started implementing its Repairs, Maintenance and Upgrade Plan for the stretch of coastline and hope to complete it by December 2014. Adressing a recent subcouncil meeting, Ne-Ray Lubbe, from Sports and Recreation,
explained that the department conducted an audit in August and September, to determine the status of the facilities. The upgrade plan is the result of this audit. By December 2014, the city hopes to have implemented its plan to standardise the city’s 10 beach ablution blocks between Milnerton and Melkbos. “A specific look and feel will be developed to create uniformity which will ensure that the facilities are modern yet practical,” Lubbe explains. The standardisation will see all 10 blocks plastered and painted. The interior wall and
floor tiles will also be upgraded, along with the basins and other fittings. Lubbe says funding has already been secured for two blocks in Table View, namely Witsand and Spectrum, and work is expected to start in February 2014. “The anticipated completion date is December 2014 depending on budget availability,” explains Lubbe, referring to the standardisation of all 10 ablution blocks. According to Lubbe’s subcouncil presentation, repairs on the broken boardwalks along the beachfront are expected to start in the next two weeks. V To page 2.

The repairs of the post and rail fencing at Melkbos, will be done by city staff.
The department is looking at the signage on the beachfront and will erect extra signage should it be necessary. Lubbe also told subcouncil that the 64 benches along the stretch of coastline will be repaired, as well as the pathway lights along the coastline. Along with this, the roofs of the ablution blocks in Table View, Witsand and Spectrum, will be repaired. Lubbe says the city hopes to complete the roof repairs by Decem-
ber. Minor repairs will also be carried out at coastal facilities throughout the festive season. “Identified maintenance is acted upon immediately, on identification, through normal maintenance and emergency repairs processes,” Lubbe says. Beach-goers can report emergencies to a special “hotline” number set up for the peak season on 021 597 6003.

Holding area Concerns about the fence come after TygerBurger reported on a proposed taxi holding area the City of Cape Town had planned for the same area. “The application to use the area for a stacking area has been circulated for comment to relevant municipal offices in the city,” says the city’s mayoral committee member for transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron. “As soon as the necessary approval has been received to use the area for the intended purpose, the fencing

The city, together with the affected taxi associations, ensured that all their taxi drivers’ names were included on a register and all contractors in the MyCiTi system must employ from the register,” Herron says. He also points out that the city has no agreements with taxi drivers, as taxi drivers who become MyCiTi bus drivers work for the VOCs.

encing of the proposed taxi stacking area in Table View has not yet started. The fencing currently being erected at the Virgin Active parking lot in Pentz Drive, Table View, is being done by the gym, who are closing off their own parking area. “Virgin Active is in the process of installing fencing that was approved months ago, prior to any mention of a taxi holding zone,” explains Jeff Hacker, head of Property Projects for Virgin Active South Africa. He says this fencing, which enclosed the whole parking area, will have a main entrance gate and a pedestrian gate which will both be installed this week. “During operating hours, security staff will patrol the parking area. After hours the parking area will be closed and secured,” Hacker says.

Brenner explained in the subcouncil meeting that the city will fence the area, supply temporary toilets, cleaning services and that it will be controlled by a security guard. “The security guard at Bayside Taxi rank will radio the guard at the new stacking area when they need a taxi for a particular route,” she explained. These taxis will operate from the Bayside rank during peak hours. “As for Sandown Road, in 2012 Transport for Cape Town agreed that five loading bays were allocated on Sandown Road for taxi operations,” Brenner says, adding: “From the commencement of the Virgin Active facility only five vehicles will now be allowed to operate from Sandown from 10:00 to 16:00. Now bins are part of the crime pattern Bins are weapons of crime. This is according to an alert sent out by the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW). In the alert, they explained that criminals use the black bins, provided to residents by the city, as stepladders to climb over walls. They also use the bins to hide in while waiting for an opportunity to break into a property. According to the TVNW, the bins are used to hide stolen items and as an indication of your movements. They explain that a bin left out early in the morning or the night before could suggest that the home owner is away. Similarly, a bin left out for more than one night, sends the message that the owner may not have been home and the house is possibly vacant. Bins also attract vagrants and the TVNW has recorded a significant drop in the number of vagrants in streets who do not put their bins out the night before collection day. The TVNW points out that the content of residential bins, like old clothing, are sometimes used as stock for informal trading and taxi ranks and open public spaces. Scrap metal in the form of items like old appliances are also attracting illegal scrap metal dealers, according to the TVNW, who buy the metal from vagrants. Residents can help the situation by trying to put their bins out only in the official time of rubbish collection, which is 06:00 to 23:00. Another tip is to bring your bin in as soon as possible after rubbish collection and to recycle. TVNW suggests donating any items that still have “life” to charity instead of leaving them in bins. They also ask residents not to give food and other items to vagrants as the TVNW says this encourages vagrants to return to the area. Bust for ivory possesion A Chinese national has been sentenced after he was found to be in possession of illegal ivory in Montague Gardens. Qi Lu was found guilty in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court recently, on charges of possession of illegal ivory and dealing in ivory. According to SAPS, SARS K9 were busy with a routine inspection at Time Freight Courier Services on 29 February 2012, when a dog reacted to some of the boxes which were found to contain ivory. A search warrant was obtained for Unit C7, Spearhead Business Park, Freedom
Way, Montague Gardens and 35-year-old Lu was arrested after he was found with ivory to the value of R12 615 083. A follow up was conducted at a curio shop in Cape Town city centre and ivory to the value of R513 201 was confiscated. Lu has been sentenced to a fine of R1m and 10 years’ imprisonment, suspended for 5 years. The processed value of the ivory is R21m and was forfeited to the state. The Western Cape SAPS Management states that the sentencing of the accuser sends out a strong message to criminals that SAPS will not tolerate this crime.

E-Parking system revamped Century City’s popular E-Parking system has been revamped. The E-Parking system was introduced at Century City 10 years ago to provide affordable public parking for those working in the precinct. The two initial sites were near the Bosmansdam entrance, known as Century Way E-Parking and on the corner of Ratanga Road and Century Boulevard which was moved closer to Sable Road 18 months ago to make way for two new office blocks and has been known as Ratanga E-Parking. A third E-parking was added at the Curro Century City Private School last year and another two have now been constructed and are being completed. These are the MyCiTi E-Parking, adja-
cent to the Public Transport Interchange off Century Way, which will have 259 bays, and the Steel Bridge E- that has been constructed adjacent to the Aurecon building off Century City Drive. This means there are now a total of 1100 E-Parking bays in Century City. With the City of Cape Town’s MyCiTi service extending to Century City on 30 November, the current Century City Shuttle service transporting people from the E-Parking sites to their places of work will be phased out. Existing E-Parking access cards will still be used and will be re-programmed to operate at the new E-Parking facility that users have been allocated to. Safety tips from TVNW for season With the silly season on it’s way, the Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) has put together a list of crime tips to help keep local residents safe. “Crime in your area is on the increase, and SAPS’ resources are stretched to capacity which means the situation is unlikely going to rectify itself,” says Gemma Redelinghuys from the TVNW. “Just a very small effort on your part can play a massive and vital role in alleviating the current crime problem,” she says. Residents are advised to be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behaviour. Tied to this, residents should make an effort to know their neighbours. They are also encouraged to not hire people off the streets for housework or gardening. The TVNW recommend using a well recommended worker and keeping a copy of their ID document to have them police cleared. Redelinghuys says you can contact the police or Global Intelligence on 021 557 8669 to have this done. She points out that 77 % of all house robberies are due to inside information. The TVNW asks residents to report street lights that are out to the City of Cape Town on 0860 103 089. “A dark street makes it easier for criminals to roam undetected,” Redelinghuys says. Residents are also requested to only put their bins out in the morning on rubbish collection day as leaving them out the night before invites vagrants into the area. “Not only do these vagrants often leave a mess but they are also well known to be informants for house burglars and robbers,” Redelinghuys says, adding: “Also don’t advertise you just bought a new flat screen TV by leaving the box outside. Rather cut it up and place it inside your bin.” Residents are encouraged to clean rubbish or litter in their driveway or near their front door. According to the TVNW, such items in front of your house have been identified as a possible sign to see if there is any activity at the residence. “This also applies to mail, pamphlets and newspapers in your mail box. Empty it as often as you possible,” Redelinghuys suggests. It is important to make sure that your house number is easily identifiable in the case of an emergency and if you have a security alarm, make sure you use it. Kan ons dit nie maar herdoop na 365 dae van aktivisme teen geweld teen vroue en kinders nie? Dit sou seker nie realisties wees om só ’n droom waar te maak nie? Tog, as geweldadige mans met meer oorgawe vervolg word, kan die boodskap dalk net inslag vind. Hoeveel keer hoor ’n mens van gesinsgeweld en gevalle van teistering en verkragting wat nooit aangemeld word nie? Te veel om op te noem. Vir die polisie is dit onmoontlik om altyd pro-aktief op te tree of bewus te wees van sulke gevalle. Juis om daardie rede moet elke lid van die gemeenskap hierdie aangeleentheid “polisieer”. Meld sulke gevalle onverwyld aan. Werk saam om hierdie slagoffers te verlos van ’n lewe van vrees. Onthou, hulle word ontneem van hul basiese menseregte. Dit ons ander se plig om op te tree en hulle te help.

Name & shame illegal parkers With reference to the letters “Some disabled bays blocked every day”, “One day you may need disabled bay” and “Others can utilise the disabled bays”, TygerBurger, 20 November: We are the parents of a disabled boy. I have been involved in the disabled sector for many years. The only words for people who park in disabled bays are lazy and selfish. It is common practice these days in shopping centres that you find the following “Disabled parking tow away zone Fine R250,00.” I have on numerous occasions challenged management of shopping malls to provide me with a list of money donated to charity when people are clamped and they could not. Every time I shop at Tyger Valley or Willowbridge there are people parked in disabled bays. Security is nowhere and my question is what will they do if you complain? The sad part is we just don’t care. The only way we can change things is to use our vote and ensure that we have people in Parliament who can do something. Hoe kan die gemeenskap positief wees teenoor die polisie as daar geen vertroue in hulle is nie? In die laaste tyd het daar te veel op die lappe gekom. Die kommissaris van die polisie, genl. Phiyego, word ondersoek oor ’n klagte van regsverydeling ná sy genl. Lamoer, provinsiale kommissaris van die Wes-Kaap, gewaarsku het
hy word ondersoek oor ongerymdhede deurdat hy ’n verbintenis het met “dwelmbase”. Misdade soos verkragting, moord, bendegeweld en roof neem drasties toe in die WesKaap, waarvan die meeste dwelmverwant is, maar nogtans sien genl. Veary kans om ’n T-hemp met ’n dagga-embleem in die openbaar te dra. Die polisiekommissaris het erken daar is lede, selfs senior bestuurslede, wat verhoorafwagtend is vir ernstige misdade soos moord, gewapende roof, verkragting en huisbraak. Nou het hier ook ’n bom gebars deurdat die minister van polisie vir Robert McBride wil aanstel as uitvoerende direkteur van hierdie klagtedirektoraat. Robert McBride het ’n donker verlede wat aan ons almal bekend is. Die vraag ontstaan: Wil jy nog betrokke raak by misdaadvoorkoming, aangesien ek nie oortuig is wie vriend of vyand is nie? Buying SA while you sell it behind my back It is all good and well to support proudly SA products and I’m all for it, because I am a proud South African (“We must all buy proudly SA”, TygerBurger, 13 November). In reality though, the bus stops with our government, who allows cheap imports into our country. This robs the hard working, honest SA business men and women from an income. People who cannot even afford the basic necessities, will opt for the cheaper products. Also, all the foreigners who enter our country and open small businesses all over, do not pay business taxes, but we are squeezed to pay tax. Other disability also claims parking bay While there are chancers who use disabled parking bays, the public should also be made aware that not all disabled people use wheelchairs, walkers or walking sticks. There are a number of diseases where sufferers are in constant pain and become easily fatigued. I have multiple sclerosis and mostly use a normal parking bay, even though I am in possession of a disabled parking bay sticker. Spiking drinks on the increase says expert DESIREÉ RORKE @dezzierorke
S
piking people’s drinks is becoming an increasingly dangerous trend all over the city, especially in the time leading up to the festive season, between November and December, when matric farewells, office parties and celebratory endof-the-school-year house parties are abundant. So says John Bushwell CEO of Rape Wise, who receives approximately 400 cases of “drink spiking” per year. More often than not this practice leads to associated crimes like rape, robbery, illegal production of porn or even assault. Moreover it happens across the board. “Not only young teens are victims. People of all ages and genders including divorcees are targeted. In the case of women the associated crime is usually rape whereas with men it is mostly robbery,” he says.
Date rape Recently the lives of two young women from the northern suburbs were dramatically altered after they too became victims of a date rape, which resulted from drinks that were spiked at a popular pub in Durbanville. Fearful even to tell their parents, and ashamed of the stigma attached to rape, the young women in their late teens and early 20s didn’t report the rapes to the police, with the result that the perpetrators are still walking free. “The two women visited a well-known pub and while having a drink were joined by two young guys who looked like the regular boys next door,” says an anonymous source close to the women. “Although the two guys were not known to the girls they were not strangers – they were the same age, they spoke the same language (Afrikaans), and they lived in the same neighbourhood and shared the same interests. Nothing about their behaviour warned of ‘stranger danger’ and accepting an offer of a drink seemed perfectly normal,” the source told TygerBurger. According to her the women don’t recall much and have only vague memories of having sexual intercourse. “Only hours later they realised that their drinks had been ‘roofied’ and…their first thought was not to tell anybody. In case of pregnancy they have taken the morning after pill but have put the thought of STDs and HIV aside,” she says adding that the incident has left her disturbed and worried. “Both these girls refuse to speak to their parents or any other caregiving adults about their ordeal because they have repeatedly been warned ‘not to accept drinks from strangers’. They have been conditioned, into believing that by accepting a drink ‘you are asking to be raped’,” the source said. “They were possibly repeatedly raped by both the men yet their upbringing dictates that they are unable to share this
with their parents. Do we tell our sons and daughters that sex without consent, no matter the circumstances, is always rape or do we continue the myth that lead our children to believe that certain behaviour invites rape?” She continues to say that both these young women are currently trying to deal with this traumatic ordeal all on their own – because, if their parents found out, “they would kill them”, the young women apparently believe. “These are educated parents and children with professions that society looks up to, it’s worrying but even worse the rapists are still out there and they still look like the nice middle class boy next door,” she says.
Communication According to Bushwell the majority of these victims “don’t come out” simply because they feel stupid, sometimes erroneously thinking that they drank too much. “Parents have to be pro-active in their education. Open up the channels of communication with your children. Warn them of the dangers but also make it clear to them that you are their parent and are there to support them, no matter what they did, wrong or not, or what the consequences were,” he says. According to Bushwell this pro-active approach is imperative, as victims of rape that might have been exposed to HIV only have 72 hours to have PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) treatment. “Furthermore, it is critical for these women to receive psychological counselling as victims of these kinds of rapes are very difficult to counsel, because they have almost no memory of the rape. The questions and images often haunt them forever – how many men raped me? What was done to me? What else could have happened?” “Untreated, victims of this type of rape often become suicidal, promiscuous or selfharming,” Bushwell says. Drugs There are four major drugs available to spike drinks with. They are Rohypnol (“roofies”), Ketamine Hydrochloride an anaesthetic barbiturate, and GHB, a veterinarian tranquilliser. The most common and cheapest drug used for spiking however, according to Bushwell, are common eye drops. “The perpetrator would usually drop about eight drops into your drink and after only having one beer, it feels as if you had 10. In a normal soft drink it won’t have any effect, whereas alcohol is a catalyst and the stronger the alcohol the stronger the result. Symptoms such as slurred speech, vomiting and suppressed breathing come on very fast, and you pass out.” Bushwell says, it could even kill a person if too much of the drug, containing Benzalkonium Chloride and Naphazoline Nitrite, which is highly soluble in alcohol is administered. The fun walk will kick off at 09:00 at the beach parking lot across from the Ou Skip Caravan Park and will end at the Purple Ice Cream Parlour on 11th Avenue. The voluntary beach cleanup will take place during the walk in co-operation with the Department of Nature Conservation. Sand art artist, Reon Zeff, will create a rhino sculpture at the event and this and other rhino related items will be displayed with moneyboxes for donations, in aid of rhino conservation. The concert kicks off at 16:00 with gospel artist and radio personality, Ivan Siegelaar as MC. Locals are invited to bring their blankets and pillows and enjoy entertainment by the André Victor Band, the Gymnasium for Jesus (G4J) band and dancers.
The big act for the night will be the ShofarBand, from the Stellenbosch Shofar church, who are performing as part of their Coast to Coast tour. Their hour-long musical show includes dancers, a testimony, a performance by an X games blade runner, and an MC, alongside the band. V Entrance for the day’s activities cost R10. Daar is psigopate wat tussen ons woon en werk. Hierdie “gesosialiseerde” psigopate veroorsaak dikwels verwoesting in die lewens van mense. Dink maar in ’n werkplek waar die eienaar of baas humeurig en op ’n boelie-agtige manier mense manipuleer, dreig en belieg om sy doelwitte te bereik sonder om daaroor skuldig te voel. Hy handel gewetenloos in transaksies en het ’n houding van meerderwaardigheid en onaantasbaarheid. Hy gebruik (misbruik) mense tot sy eie voordeel. Daar is ook die gladdemond en sjarmante psigopaat wat vinnige opgang in die korporatiewe werkplek maak. Hy hou van die polsende dinamika van ’n amper chaotiese werksomgewing, waar vinnige besluite belangrik is. Hy gebruik kwesbare vroue vir seks en geld, maar is oppervlakkig en kortstondig in sy verhoudings. Alles draai net om sy eie beeld en behoeftes. Sy manipulasie kan verwar word met leierskap. Die vermoë om mense sover te kry om jou te volg is leierskap, maar dis psigopatiese trekke wanneer jy mense daartoe manipuleer met charisma en leuens. Nog ’n voorbeeld is die jong vrou wat haar middeljarige ouers verslae, bekommerd en radeloos laat. Sy drink en gebruik dwelms, raak deurmekaar met allerhande gure karakters, gee nie om vir haar kinders en vestig geen goeie langtermyn verhoudinge nie. Sy misbruik haar familie om geld te kry, toon geen skaamte daaroor nie, en blameer ander vir haar situasie. Dan is daar die psigopaat wat ’n meisie sal misbruik. Hy mishandel haar fisiek en emosioneel; doen roekelose impulsiewe dinge. Hy manipuleer die meisie, sodat sy inval by wat hy wil doen, sonder dat hy werklik omgee vir haar siening en behoeftes. Hy kom nie sy beloftes na nie, maar pak tog die skuld op haar. Die aanwesigheid van genoemde kenmerke maak nie iemand noodwendig ’n psigopaat nie. Laat die diagnose vir ’n psigopaat in die hande van professionele kundiges. Om egter vroegtydig kennis en waarskuwing te neem wanneer iemand oor trekke van ’n psigopaat beskik, kan jou uiteindelik baie verdriet, skade en ellende in jou persoonlike en finansiële lewe, sowel as werksomgewing, spaar. Many organisations have heeded the call for 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, and in the Western Cape Rape Crisis is leading the way with its Stop the Bus campaign and the Birds and the Bees Youth Camp. Fair Cape Dairies has offered their support to the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence campaign and the Rape Crisis initiatives. “We are producing a Fair Cape six-pack yoghurt product with black cups and a Rape Crisis label to show support, both in action
and financially for this great cause,” said Louis Loubser, Fair Cape marketing director. The campaign is part of the company’s Fair Cape Cares initiative, which raises funds and awareness for a range of charity organisations including the WWF, the Cancer Alliance, the Little Fighters’ Cancer Trust, CANSA and the Big Issue. The media was invited to join volunteers to pack the special Rape Crisis yoghurts recently at Fair Cape Dairies in Killarney Gardens.

That extra cold one could lead to you spending six years in the slammer or over R100 000 poorer. As the silly season approaches, Law Enforcement and Traffic Services are out in full force in an attempt to keep the streets safe and free of drunk drivers. In a bid to reduce the road carnage, a call has been made to reduce the alcohol limit in line with international standards. The legal limit in South Africa for breath alcohol content is 0.24 mg per 1 000 ml or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05 g per 100 ml. In literal terms, this equals two thirds of
a beer or spirit cooler with 5 % alcohol content; 75 ml of red or white wine per hour with an alcohol content of 12 % to 14 %; and up to one 25 ml tot of alcohol per hour for whiskey or brandy drinkers. Two drinks in one hour will more than likely put you over the legal limit. The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) continues to lobby for the blood alcohol concentration limit to be brought in line with world standards, says spokesperson Graeme Scala. “The crisis on South Africa’s roads demands a tougher approach. The AA has for some time proposed that the 0.05 % limit be reduced to 0.02 %,” he says. “This allows some leeway for medications that contain alcohol, but still emphasises
that one alcoholic drink puts you over the limit. A blood alcohol limit of 0.02 % means that drinking even one beer with 4 % alcohol will put an individual over the limit.” Should you be caught driving under the influence of alcohol you could face up to six years in prison or be slapped with a fine of up to R120 000. Two years of court appearances and thousands in legal fees taught one driver to steer clear of taking to the road after hitting the bottle. The man, who was arrested for driving under the influence three years ago, says he drove into a roadblock after leaving a party. The next day he made his first of many court appearances. “Over the next two years I had a court appearance each month; with each appear-
ance the lawyer I appointed charged up to R1 500,” he says. “The case was postponed for several reasons, including a delay in the results of the blood tests, as well as a change in the state prosecutor.” The case was finally closed and he was sentenced to 250 hours of community service. “I am still doing the time for my unnecessary actions; it is something I will never subject myself or my family to again,” he says. “This was not only an expensive eyeopener for me, but also for my friends and family.” Scala says breathalyser printouts are admissible as evidence in court. The Soweto String Quartet talk about their new album on the Orange Couch. see themselves as custodians of South African culture. Merchant Music approached the group to record an album and being versatile, Makhosini says they asked to do something different. “They brought the music to us, we listened to it and we injected the SSQ groove in it,” Makhosini says.
Gold The first Afrikaans album was so successful it went gold in two months. The album also saw the group performing at the country’s biggest Afrikaans festivals which in turn saw their Afrikaans fan base grow, so much so, that there was great demand for a second Afrikaans album. Soweto String Quartet sing Afrikaanse Treffers, Vol 2 is made up of 14 well-known traditional Afrikaans and Afrikaans pop songs and includes guests Dozi, Gerhard Steyn, Anton Goosen and Juanita du Plessis. “The album has got big names in the Afrikaans music scene,” Sandile says, adding:

“This is the first time we have recorded the iconic songs and I think this actually says a lot about the willingness of Soweto String Quartet to embrace all the cultures of this country.” “We are just musicians and we are worried about the wellness of our country,” Sandile says. He says: “We have got to leave a legacy for young people to follow. Basically to help young people one day become well-rounded citizens of the country,” Sandile explains. SSQ hopes to eventually record some of their own compositions and there have been requests for a Christmas album. Touring The group have more than just made a career out of music; they even spent time touring with ex-president Nelson Mandela and are said to be his favourite music group. “At the time, before Mandela became president, South Africa was a focal point of the world because we were looking at the new democracy,” Thami explains, adding that SSQ was also emerging at the time, no longer bound by apartheid rules. “We became the quartet that Mandela would tour with across the world,” he says, adding: “Because he had to convince investors across the world that South Africa was ready.” “So wherever he went Soweto String Quartet was there,” Thami says. Makhosini explains that the group decided to record Afrikaans songs because they

he Soweto String Quartet have recently released a second volume of “Afrikaanse Treffers”. The ensemble visited the Orange Couch to talk about the group when they were in Cape Town to promote Soweto String Quartet sing Afrikaanse Treffers, Vol 2. “Soweto String Quartet (SSQ) was formed way back in 1978 by four young boys,” explains Sandile Khemese. “At the time we belonged to a group that was called Soweto Symphony Orchestra,” he explains, adding that they were the youngest members of the part-time orchestra. “We decided to form Soweto String Quartet because I think we had this ambition and desire to actually pursue music as our career,” he says. Sandile is joined in the group by Thami Khemese, Makhosini Mnguni and Themba Machobane.

Cycle coaching to next level Cycling South Africa’s Coaching Commission will be hosting a Cycle Skills & Club Level Coaching Course at the Bellville Velodrome from Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 December. A week later they will also be hosting a Level 1 Coaching Course at the Bellville Velodrome from Saturday 14 to Monday 16 December. This course will be presented by Ian Rodger and Roger Bouton, both UCI Level 2 and Cycling SA Coaches. Candidates of a Level 1 Cycling Coach Course will discover a training programme for the coach who wishes to assist club and provincial level cyclists to develop their fitness and hone their racing skills. To be part of this course, candidates need
to have been an active Cycle Skill and Club Level Coach for six months, or have gained entry through the RPL system. On 14 and 15 December the course will be from 09:00 to 17:00 and on 16 December from 09:00 to 16:00. All accredited cycling coaches are recognised as having met the standards under the Cycling SA-NCAS (National Coach Accreditation Scheme), which is recognised by SASCOC. The cost for the course is R 2 500 per candidate. Course material will be supplied as will refreshments and lunch. iaan Smit (Bellville) was crowned as the overall winner of the TygerBurger Sportstar of the Month competition for the year at a function held on Friday night in Kenridge. This competition in conjunction with the SuperSport Let’s Play initiative and Bosman, McNulty and Du Toit Optometrists honours local high school sporting achievements. Tiaan’s performances of international standards in athletics makes him a worthy winner. Currently ranked 6th on the IAAF world ranking for 110 m hurdles (youth) – his third consecutive year in the top 10.
Honour “It’s such an honour to win this award, and all the hard work makes it worthwhile. It’s special moments like this that motivates you to train harder and achieve even greater heights. “I would like to thank everybody involved for making this competition possible for us,” Tiaan said. The SuperSport camera was filming the awards and will be broadcasted next month. A time and date for the broadcast is not yet set. Shihan Hennie Bosman had a powerful message to the youngsters present about hard work and perseverance. He told them to always keep their eyes on their dreams and to make every day count in achieving their goals.
“It was a privilege for Let’s Play and SuperSport to be part of the gala prizegiving event held for this year’s winners on Friday evening,” said Eduard Rosenstrauch, media liaison officer for SuperSport in the Western Cape.

Die tuisspan het die wedstryd, met nog drie paaltjies staande, in sy guns beklink. Edgemead (139/4 gesl. en 181/6 gesl.) het Ottoman (100/4 gesl. en 98) met 122 lopies kafgedraf. Tygerberg (190/5 gesl. en 65/1) se wedstryd teen Pinelands (133) het onbeslis geeindig. Die kragmeting tussen Kuilsrivier (212/5) en Ou Mutual (200/7) was ook ombeslis. Ook Milnerton (170/3 gesl.) moes met ’n onbesliste uitslag teen Mitchells Plain (82 en 127/5) gediend wees.
