) Rat poison kills family pets
Pet dog targets
Pooches on parade A dog show at Theo Marais Sport Complex in Milnerton on Sunday drew caninefanatics from all over South Africa. Only a few dogs strutted away with their honour intact, but the mere fact that they competed in “good spirit” should make them nap a little easier. Big Bay’s Michelle Meyer and her amazing sheepdog, Cloe, were just one of the hun dreds of competitors. Read more on page 3. Photo: André Bakkes

The apparent poisoning of a handful of dogs in Melkbosstrand has left some local residents fearing for their pets’ lives. Marnette Meyer says her 11-yearold Italian greyhound was still playing carefree on 28 September the day before she died. “There was no sign that she was sick. Nicky crept under our bed covers at around 21:00 and suddenly gave a jerk. We thought she was dreaming. I rushed to her, but she seemed fine,” Marnette said. The next morning she was awoken by a terrible sound. “I woke up at 04:30 with Nicky crying something terrible in my arms. Then she just gave a couple of shudders and died.” Marnette thought the dog’s death was due to a heart attack given her age. Fortunately they still had Lala and Reepel Steel, both offspring from Lala. On 6 October Marnette who was in the hospital at the time got a phone call from her husband saying that Reepel Steel had the same symptoms as those displayed by Nicky. He rushed her to the vet. “The vet said she had a fit and prescribed medication, which we gave her every day.” A week later she too passed away. “It was the Saturday evening, we were getting ready to eat when
Reepel suddenly fainted. In shock I gave her to my husband to massage her heart but to no avail. That is when we realised something was very wrong,” Marnette said. A pathology report confirmed that Reepel Steel had died because of severe internal haemorrhage brought on by the consumption of rat poison. Marnette confirms that they never put out rat poison because of their dogs. “How do you prevent this and who can be so cruel?” she asked. After asking around Marnette heard that a nearby neighbour’s dog had also died at that same time. Mark Simon’s nine-year-old Staffie, Winston died about two weeks ago. “We discovered him late afternoon on the Sunday shaking and foaming at the mouth. We tried to get him to drink some water. The next morning we took him to the vet and they said he is suffering and we should put him down,” Simon said. The family initially thought their beautiful brindle Staffie had had a fit brought on by old age, but after hearing of Marnette’s incident they too are now suspicious. “When we heard about Marnette’s dog, we checked on the internet and the symptoms described for poisoning was those that Winston had,” he said. A rooster of another nearby resident also died under strange circumstances. . To page 2
